    I put my Hoyas outside in my shade garden last summer. I'd never had the plants outdoors before. Hoyas are related to our native milkweed species and a Monarch butterfly actually laid eggs on my plants. I found caterpillars nibbling on the leaves! Now I'm wondering if Monarchs would pollinate the flowers.
    I am so astounded by that Hoya collection. It's so beautiful!

  • @Nhoj31neirbo47
    @Nhoj31neirbo47 4 роки тому +7

    (27:30) - Their substrate culture is similar to orchid medium. It retains moisture and drains perfectly. They repot yearly because when the coir breaks down it retains too much water and doesn’t drain well , which can cause root rot. Over time it also tends to accumulate salts, etc., from fertilizer and any tap water used, which can weaken the root system. Their culture provides ideal conditions for vigorous root growth by replicating conditions found in nature where the growing medium is microbially dynamic and constantly refreshing itself and being leached clean by rain. This is especially important for epiphytic and semi-epiphytic hoyas which fair poorly in ‘sour’ soil. ~ (shout out) - Doug Chamberlain recently posted a video on his experience growing Hoya griffithii, one of the rare plants discussed herein.

    Thank you for yet another magnificent field trip! I had no idea there were so many forms of Hoya, or of their cultural needs & no idea about the world my variegated Hoya was a part of. I know that scent of the velvety pinkish white bloom well, & the fascinating little red dots clustered in the center, that look like candy. Too bad I had no idea what type of soil it needed. It survived for maybe 15, 20 years, then began looking poorly. I didn't have a clue what it needed.
    It struck a chord of recognition when you described the way mine looked before it finally kicked the bucket. I had moved to a place with much larger windows & better light. Thought it would thrive in such good, direct S/W facing morning blasts of sun. As you pointed out, it grew weary looking & paler, & even had a couple leaves turn yellow. It was losing it's waxy coating, looking flat & dull. I thought it was drying in a sunnier spot, so gave it more water. That was the final straw. Now I get it...

I'm not super well versed in my plants yet, but it's put out five new leaves in the last two months, and I am pretty sure it's growing a few flower spurs.
