Hey guys... what did you think? Do you want us to cover other 'glowy/SFX weapons' - e.g. Ice Blades, or do you have other suggestions? Colours used available here:elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/element-essentials/egaps/paints-hobby-and-scenery/element-essentials/egaps/artis-opus-bundles/artis-opus-molten-lava-sword-bundle Paints used: Pro Acryl Bright Ivory Flash Gitz Yellow Pro Acryl Orange Pro Acryl Bold Pyrrole Red Burnt Red Abaddon Black
Awesome video, mate. It looked very cool when you'd finished. Definitely go for a frost blade, although what about other elements? I remember a video game I loved called "Drakan: The Ancients' Gates" where there were 4 Elemental Blades: earth, fire, ice, lightning. Collecting all four let you forge a powerful sword to bring down the big boss. Cannot remember what the EARTH Sword had regarding powers, but it was green in representation. You could try browns and reds... :/ Would be an interesting concept to try. Earth Blade, Earth Blade! (and a Frost Blade) :D
Wow, was looking for a way to do molten style blades, and this tutorial will be added to my list of references. For my needs I would be using a similar technique but in reverse. plan is to mostly use single edged power weapons and have the hottest point be on the edge of the blade...Thanks again.
This is pretty awesome. I’m going to try and apply this to my Fyreslayers runes cause I’ve been trying to find a way to make “lava glowing” runes so I really am excited to test this out
really impressed with the pigments on those Monument Hobbies paints. Need to get myself some of the Yellow to Red colours for my Fyreslayers project for their hair
They're absolute dynamite, a real pleasure to use. They're strong which takes a bit of getting used too but they're generally great and really fun to use😊
This is very similar to how I do mine, inspired by Vince. I've tried loads of brands and even a couple acrylic inks, but ProAcryl Orange simply cannot be beat for this!
I'm probably going to try a green-turquoise-blue gradient (rather than yellow-orange-red for real lava) on my Necron characters. I can't really imagine it on the blades because of how they are separated into different plates, but I'll try on their shoulder plates/pauldrons to see how it works out!
Looking great and tnx for the tutorial Byron, This fits perfectly to my paint schedule, since I'll start to paint 3 fireslayers tomorrow while I wait for my next Blood Bowl team to arrive. Guess what I'll try to learn on those fireslayer axes 😎
@@ArtisOpus I tried, but it's wasn't any award winning result yet. The base paint was a very light yellow almost luminescent. Didn't give good coverage and I made to many inconsistent layers and ultimately making a total mess of it. Covered it up with a "silver" receipt and blood for the blood God and made kind of a miniature save in the end 😉 But I won't give up, and will try again, this time a icy blue lightning axe. Have this based, but got distracted by a new Blood Bowl team in the mail 😂
That looks properly awesome, certainly never going to miss it on the table top anyway! Never tried pro acryl paint myself, I usually stick to Vallejo, lifecolor and ak or hataka, but I might just have to give them a go at some point
Funnily enough basically the exact same technique can be used to paint magic swords. Just don't add black dots to it and change the colors,I tried it with blue myself and it actually looks way better than the usual way of painting power swords for example.
My Salamanders thank you for this and your guide on braziers! It's made a huge difference. Any chance of you doing a free hand flame motif tutorial please? I thinking for Pauldron's and the small chest shield on certain newer Space Marines.
You're so welcome, dude! Possibly, videos like that are a little bit niche though and we always try to produce stuff that's relevant to the most people possible😊
That's a great looking lava sword. I can't help but wonder why you wouldn't want the brighter yellows on the outside. Surely you'd want the cutting edge to be the hottest part. But then again I suppose the hottest part should be the source of the heat. I'm not sure I've seen an "inverse" lava sword. Either way I wanna figure out which model is worthy of such a blade haha. I'd love to see a sword glow reminiscent of a paladin or something like that. Golden heavenly light or something like that
This looks like something I may be able to do! I'll give it a try next weekend. Any suggestions for doing one with a bright green fire type effect, also?
@@ArtisOpus there's also less space on swords to make mistakes, which can actually be forgiving for us shaky-handed folks! 😅 I'm also now wondering how well this would work on Necron blades, as I've yet to finalise the scheme for my Indomicrons...
Thanks so much, dude! It has been requested a few times recently. I used to have it specific sequence of colours that I went through with Scale 75 Inks, but I've completely forgotten it😅😅
Is it possible to see what it would take to translate this to the upcoming dragons for Stormcast Eternals dragons? I would like to be able to do them in the theme of Deathwing from World of Warcraft.
Amazing work as always! Don't have any weapon were to try this out (nor probably the skill^^), but more knowledge is always great to have. And yes, more weapon effects are always great! Plague maybe? (Don't know why, but haven't gotten any notification for 2 out of the last 5-6 videos :'( ) Never done a yt video, but maybe 24h notice could be the standard? edit: Love your videos, but have you thought anything about putting it in print? Not everything ofc, but like the video above. Videos are great, but having a painting guide/book is imho even better. Also, it's much easier to have a book beside you, then a computer when painting. Especially when you can go back to the video and see it live, so to say^^
More time on power weapons in general is definitely something we should be doing! When we do I will make sure greet gets a look in as early as possible👌😊
I have a question, how would you paint a burning blade where the fire was white? I’m asking because different colored fire determines how hot it is and I’m sure that white fire is the hottest and I wanna use that for one of my character’s power swords, so what would you recommend?
I'm curious how long the difference between being 'allowed' to get a haircut... and 'getting' a haircut, was? [I wanted to link a video from the Mary Whitehouse experience but couldn't find it on UA-cam... and I suspect it would only show my advanced age.] I'm all for sword/weapon effects tutorials, the forthcoming Belakor model seems like it warrants something awesome doing to it.
I was initially a bit lukewarm on the Belakor model but I think that's largely due to the basically one-colour paint job. After more consideration, I think he'd look really cool with a bit more colour.. I waited 1 day to chop the mushroom off😅😅
@@ArtisOpus I agree, I think you could airbrush, drybrush, blend up some really awesome colours while keeping the whole 'shadow demon' schtick. And that sword is just begging for something clever to be done in painting it. I think the model itself is excellent though, Darren Latham's last couple of sculpts have been ridiculously good.
Check out our How to Paint Flames tutorial. Given that they're both painted realistically it should be easy to combine the techniques for a great finish😊🔥
Ok, so I still have huge problem with overbrushing. If I use only paint on pallete, it will come out chalky and all, like normal dry brushing. But If i use a pad, take some moisture away, take some paint, move it out on pallete... i have like no coverage and it is like it was too diluted and all... what am I doing wrong? :(((
Hey dude, it sounds like you're at the extremes with bot htechniques, try taking something like a piece of terrain, using a larger brush (balance is easier to get with them) and just experiment (in small increments!) You could even just stick on the texture palette for a bit :)

It's not too hot in the UK so sweating the paint off doesn't happen very easily. I do sometimes go and wash my hands between stages if I am worried about it though😊
Byron, buy a jewllers magnification headset. I swear by mine. well Found how the Captains power swords getting painted! Your tutorials are basically going to paint my whole army LOL. Thanks
Our pleasure, my dude! Happy hobbying 🤘
I think I want to try this with a different color palette
You thinking trying in say purple tones ? I am
It will absolutely work with different colours. So far the 'rule' seems to be that any deep saturated colour works best😊
Uh oh... I submitted a mini for the next Mini Painter reacts video with a molten sword effect a few days ago. *nervous sweating*
Interesting! We'll have to see, sure it'll be good, dude :)
Great video!! Will definitely giving this a go on my salamander blade guard, also awesome shoutout for another great artist, keep being awesome.
Thanks so much, dude! I feel pretty strongly about crediting sources of inspiration, be they big or small😊

Amazing! I don't hear bad things about their paints so I will definitely pick it up🤩🔥
I really enjoy your videos, you explain things very well. I would love to see you painting a frost blade.
Cheers dude! Great idea, we just need a Space Wolves release or something with a nice chunky one! :D
The effect is super cool! But I liked it more before doing the lines in the middle. The black dots make it even more lava-like.
I can definitely see the argument for not doing it, it's why I mentioned it in the video, would love to see some people experimenting!
I'm probably going to try a green-turquoise-blue gradient (rather than yellow-orange-red for real lava) on my Necron characters. I can't really imagine it on the blades because of how they are separated into different plates, but I'll try on their shoulder plates/pauldrons to see how it works out!
You can make anything look cool if you put enough thought into it, experimenting is one of the most important parts of the hobby😊

Interesting stuff. Leaves plenty of room for colour changes to make things colder.

That's inspirational. I'm going to try that myself, except I only have Contrast Paints and Dry Paints. So it's an additional challenge.

I want to see this in a rune sword like the ones wielded by Prosecutors and Errant Questor
