In this week's tutorial we're covering a miniature painting classic, how to paint the cloaks on Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Dungeons and Dragons... well, basically any fantasy miniature!
The tutorial is covering two methods, both of which are quite fast, and can be combined, so if you've been dreading those folds, or want to improve your painting for that special character, we've got you covered!
It might surprise you that we've mainly used a SIZE 6! (Yes, that's huge!) to paint the red cloak, so no wonder it went fast.
The stippling has been done using a Medium + Drybrush.

Stippling is criminally underrated! I guess it goes back to the "no effort/struggle = no real painting" mentality. Hope it will get more attention in the future.
Capes and cloaks have been my weakness when painting miniatures, it's a subject I'm still working on.
One of the reason's because I paint few models wearing capes. I continue to learn on this still.
Thank you for this video, and have a good week.
Just like me and non-helmeted heads!
Give a few a go using this method, I think you'll surprise yourself :)
I'd like to see a video on painting wood of various ages. Would the stippling method work, what colours/ glazes to use etc
Selfishly I want to work out how to do this myself, I've seen a few gorgeous skaven shields (greyish, some mould on there) and I think it's definitely worth some research
For some reason haven't watched one your videos for a good number of months, dipped back - still smashing it Byron. Always love how approachable your tutorials are, feel as though I could go grab a model now and give it a go. If I had a brush big enough 😅
Won't be able to make this one tonight but plan to watch tomorrow. Hello to everyone who usually joins the chat 😊
👋
🙏🙏🙏Your presence will be missed bud, enjoy your plans!
Have fun rewatching tomorrow :)
Anddddd watched! I really liked the shade technique as it's something I've only recently started doing myself. Would have made it live but twas the misses birthday and the last thing she'd want in a restaurant is me on my phone going "HULDRAAAA".
Such an interesting technique, I am looking forward to trying it!
I love the stibbling. Gives the cloak some texture
Loved this tutorial! "Fat-bottomed Brushes make the painting world go 'round!"
Your tutorials are awesome and you've helped my painting LOADS. What I'd love to see a tutorial or video on would be you doing a display or competition level piece, mostly using AO dry-brushes!
I'll need to pick the right mini for this, we've done a SF one (terminator) a few months back, but I'd like to do a fantasy one for the channel to accompany it
Flipping awesome! Both techniques are great but especially loving the texture look the stippling adds 😍
I'd love to see a drybrush brush care tutorial! Maybe merge it with a Drybrush FAQ/common problems 'signs and symptoms' video =)
You are the Bob Ross of mini painting... "If the brush is feeling happy, we can feel happy" Thank you for this video, great end result!
This was such a good video. Very concise, straight to the point, yet it didn't feel rushed or skip over anything. I was just about to start painting some capes and needed the advice.
Lost it at big fat brush!! Love the reference and had me cracking up! :)
Another great tutorial, thanks for the effort you always put in.
A video I'd like to see is something more personal to me and I'm sure will apply for others. My question is how do you deal with hobby disappointment? For context, today I was feeling excited and motivated to jump back on a hobby project that I'd put to one side a while ago. Unfortunately life stuff got in the way which I won't go into. It completely killed my enthusiasm leaving me a frustrated, fed up mess. I know that if I could find the energy to sit and paint that I would forget about everything but I couldn't take that first step. Do you ever encounter these issues, how do you pull yourself out of a slump etc?
I think we all do buddy, I'd love to do something on this subject... Any suggestions in how to thumb/title it in a way which would get decent traffic? It's something I've thought about a fair bit.
@@ArtisOpus that's a hard one, I guess adding a space marine in the thumbnail would be the best bet. As the poster boys for the hobby the definitely create the most traffic.
fantastic video, liked, subscribed. I have been painting minis (all be it not to a GREAT standard) off and on fir 30 years and this vid holds many solid tps that \im sure will help me in my future painting projects. thank you
I had the perfect model to try your second method on, and it worked out perfectly. I used it on the tabard on my Space Marine Chaplain. The only thing I changed was I did my final highlight with lots of small horizontal lines to make the fabric texture, and then I glazed the first red over to knock back the orange colour a bit. Thanks for sharing!!!
Love to hear about our stuff being used, and even more it being adapted, our pleasure, it sounds like a very solid method, glad it worked :D
@@ArtisOpus Your techniques always work. I love my Series D brushes. They never let me down.
It's a little specific, but I'd love to see a good tutorial on painting the "rainbow" tyranids. thanks for the great content
Great video. Really well explained and the way you do it really makes you feel anybody can do it. A lot of painting tutorials make techniques seem scary and off putting, whereas this makes you feel confident to give things a go. Plus I like it that you make small mistakes. This adds to the feeling that anybody can have a go and end up with good results. I’ll have to watch lore of your videos!!!
For a future video, maybe some technique comparisons or recommendations for build first vs paint first styles of assembly.
Thar is a good suggestion. I tend to only paint first when I'm using push fit models as I have shakey hands. Application of glue has ruined a few models when I've painted first, but I can achieve a higher level of finish when I paint parts unassembled. It is a dilemma I struggle with on nearly every model.
Great work as always 👍👍
Thanks, buddy! Hope it was useful :)
I bought your series S brushes a couple years ago and honestly ive never used any except the smallest one, i think this video has just helped my get through my undercoating so much faster as i will now be using the biggest of the lot xD
I dont know why i was always using the smallest brush for base coats haha
I just repainted most of my stormcasts cloaks, they had blue coats and I wanted a more heraldic look so I painted them red and green, with silver armour and gold details. And the first thing I did was to skip the blending I usually do and simply do a base colour of deep green and dark red, and then a Light dry brush of an extreme highlight of almost yellow green and a a yellow red. That made the models really pop and I didn’t spend hours doing the gradual highlights!
I think I rewatched half of your earliest videos while doing this, just to get me going 😊
Good timing! I’m working on Ushoran and his cape is huge
Thank you for another great tutorial - I've been using layering for transitioning with different textures on cloaks but stippling looks like the winner for my army/batch painting moving forward.
My suggestion, particularly with the current trend in models that many people are tackling, is different methods for creating OSL. I would very much like a tutorial similar to this one with a few methods, ranging perhaps from beginner friendly to more technical, for creating effective OSL on textured surfaces (like across a face) through to smooth surfaces (like metal panels, or even along something like a set of stairs where the transitions are quite stark).
Thanks again for the cracking video and for all the tutorials.
Big brush energy!
100%, where do you think the SCE get that swagger when they land from the skies? 😂
I would love to see a video discussing your approach to coming up with good base, mid, highlight color combos, color triads etc. I always finding myself second guessing this part
A tutorial for weathering vehicle tracks would be awesome, or hover engines for vehicles / jump infantry!
Fab. Another video with lots of tips! Thanks for the informative and well explained tutorial.
Squeak-squeak! 🤩🐀🌠
I’d love a glazing tutorial! I’ve never understood how to blend with glazing, and other tutorials haven’t helped…
We definitely need to do this, it's one of the most useful techniques, and once you've got it you've got it
I love these tutorials so much and I have learned a ton of stuff. Better still, I've been able to actually execute several things in my own journey. Thank you and keep 'em coming!
Nice one , thanks ! A tutorial about varnish would be great
Really enjoyed watching this video. The style and your insight on why you're doing things is super helpful. I'm definitely going to give the stippling a try on my ASOIAF cloaks.
I think a tutorial video of this nature for horses like in a cavalry unit would be great.
A future video suggestion could be the process of building your painted subassemblies and how to finish off and tidy the joint areas.
Would be great to see your process to pull it all together Byron.
I've been painting for years, and have never considered turning the mini 'upside down' to work out the shadows. 🤦♂️
Nice simple tutorial, that apparently has tips for both veteran, and newbie, painters alike. 👍
ooh what else can we cheat at with stippling? OSL maybe? metallics? i can't wait to see more 😍
Almost anything :D it's such a flexible technique. Don't you worry, we have a list!
That was great. Got a bunch of Lumineth to have a bash at. Lots of the stuff in here will be super relevant for the robes. Great timing!
Also, this channel is so relaxing. I deal with anxiety a bunch and listening/watching to Byron is one of my calming things. So thankyou!
On the suggestion front… I’d love to see some super bright (neon?) schemes. Figure that the drybrush/stipple ideas would work brilliantly for a pink/blue cyberpunk kinda style. So… how can I get those super saturated, super bright colours? Especially without resorting to trick/fluro paint?
I would love to see a tutorial on batch painting fantasy orcs and goblins, using your fantastic techniques
Great video! I think a tutorial on painting high detail but weathered 40k guns as this is something that boggles my 🧠 and can never get quite right. Thank you for the tutorial!
Finally bought a set of your brushes after meeting you at the FMS last weekend... Just now need the bravery to actually use them.
Great video once again!
Several things I would love to see you tackle are the following. The first, take a write up from Soper, and apply it to something else. For instance his nmm on the nurgle tank and apply that to some other thing, for instance a skaven bell ;). The second idea is to experiment with your drybrush style combine it with Marco Frisoni oil washes that smooth surfaces again and see how far that can push the quality and finish.
And the last one is, experiment with different mediums to see how you can alter paint properties for better results with drybrushing. We love experiments with Byron ;)
Hi artisopus, a video idea…
Could you make a tutorial about the old school nightrunners on the gw site? These models are BULLIED but I think they are nice, especially for Mordheim.
A video about mordheim would be amazing
Stipple for the stipple God !
Perhaps the one true hobby god? Please discuss :D
@@ArtisOpus I would say yes, this one is noob friendly and I made some very good result out of it ( I followed Richard Gray's tutorial on stippling tank and mine look like I knew what I was doing :) ) I am curious to see it on cloak !
Lick for the Licking God!
Amazing video as always! I would love to see a video on realistic fur and translucent wings for bugs or dragons.
Thanks buddy!
O_o, we'll tackle fur first I think, that wings one is a great idea, but tricky!
We do have a luminescent dragon wing tutorial that might be worth checking out :)
Would love to see a tutorial on the terrain that came with the skaventide box 😁
Wonderful video. My suggestion would be a video on how to paint large "flat" skin surfaces like on the rat-ogors 😀
Another cracking video chap
Another great Video. I'd like to see a tutorial on painting a sister of silence in 40k.
*googled, saw all-gold minis, love them!*
Cool as always.
Great stuff, perfect timing for skaventide still (looking at unassembled sprues 😅)
Tutorial idea: you've a bunch of great tutorials out now, I'd love a meta tutorial on how to select a technique for a specific effect, so like an index video -- eg if wanting to do skin well, brief snapshot of technique, go there for more details. If want awesome scenery with graduated light transitions, stipple approach, more detail here. If want leather texture, try X, small snapshot, watch Y video.
Basically a wrap up video, cause when I'm trying to think of a technique to apply and I've forgotten, it can take a while to go through the back catalogue to find what I was after. So super brief summary of the different techniques, and then links to the full tutorials
"Big. Fat. Brush." *Ding!* I am crying!! 🤣🤣
Glad someone got the reference! Love Fight Club! ❤️ 🧼
thx for the great tutorial, I knew difference and application of both already. But it was really cool to the explanation why stippling results in a more natural and soft lookinng blend.
My suggestion for the next tutorial is how to stipple paint explosions with smoke plumes, like you would see during a rocket launch.
It does work really well for stuff like that, and I think SFX like this is a very cool subject, thanks for the recommendation!
Now to find someone to print me some explosions :D
@@ArtisOpus the Marvel Crisis protocol minis have some explosions on them if you dont fancy 3D printing them
A tutorial on how to do a starchart on a cloak specifically on bastian carthalos would be cool
Someone wants me to suffer! :D
@@ArtisOpus damn right 🤣
This was fantastic! I’ve always used cloaks as a metric for assessing my painting. Can’t wait to try this.
I’ve got a tutorial suggestion, maybe you’ve already done this, but maybe something for painting “plasteel” textures. I’m painting Tau and Stormtroopers and I’d love to see how to get a shiny plastic effect
Could you show stippling effect for an entire model? Like stippling all the way from base colours to highlights for a more weathered/textured look? Heresy player btw and these tutorials are great!
Thanks buddy, we absolutely could :). Our recent two blue tutorials are close, but we'll hold this in mind for a full one in the future.
I fully agree, big brushes wins. I used too smaller ones for many years and it's only recently that I stated to use size 5 or 6 for shading and 6-7 for base layers depending of the brands. I have far smoother and uniform layers.
I'd love to see more colour theory. How to make smarter colour choices to compliment the main colours we all chose for our armies would be awesome.
Also using different colours in the base coat/dry brushing stages of painting to add interesting results in the contrast phase. E.g undercoating pink to get a deeper yellow
Doing highlights and shadows has always been a pain for me to paint, as in, we're to put them. This vid helps so much, massive thanks for the time and effort you lot put in these types of vids. Could I ask if you would consider doing a "how to paint cast iron" or steel looking with lots of texture. 👍
hey Bearun! (yes I have seen many of your ads :)) afraid I took a leaf out of your book and drybrush my cloaks, you have to go very soft and use many passes but this is the way I do them now, especially "harder" colours like white. administratum grey, watered apoc white then drybrush admin grey, corax white and finally Pro acryl Bold titanium. Lovely smooth transitions as as a bonus all the studs get picked up as well. Would love to see you do Necrons, with your drybrushing they would really pop and with various glow effects on the guns (green, red, blue) Thanks!
“You can use poking.”
Universal advice, really.
As for a request, I’d love to see a video on strong vs. weak paints and how to tell the difference. Lots of folks talk about this but I’ve not seen much explanation.
1:44 Do you recommend this method of base coating with a big brush brush but not in a brush method for all types of models like space marines, orks, etc
Thanks for another great video! I am about to start a Rohan army and painting the horses has me worried. I would love to see a tutorial of horses painted in your style.
Would love to see your take on true grimdark. Moving away from traditional/GW techniques and into something quicker and dirtier. Just a suggestion
It's a very good suggestion, i'd love to try it on a terminator, I think the new ones are fantastic.
FUTURE VIDEO SUGGESTION: Space Marine drop pod with lots of weathering please.
I would LOVE to do a drop pod :).
Fast or fancy? The eternal debate.
@@ArtisOpus Fancy. You don't have many in a Space Marine army in this edition. It's worth spending the extra time on them.
Hey another great tutorial. Thanks for all the help as usual.
I need to check your backlog but I would love to see a video on glowing eyes on space marines and such.
With or without and airbrush.
Its something I've tried once or twice but I've never gotten it to work out in a way that I've been happy with.
You have videos for white and red cloaks. Need to make a video for purple cloak.😆
For some reason purple cloak requests seem to be peaking currently, you're not alone in asking this!
I’d love to see a brush care tutorial actually.
epic. thank you
I'm still a beginner in how to use the different painting methods, but your videos have moved me quite a bit, so thank you for that. However, there is one thing that I haven't really been able to find anywhere on the web, and that is when you choose to paint the individual parts of the miniature like the head, weapons, jump pack, etc. Often I see the simple parts set on a tip of metal or something like that. But how are they fixed so that they don't get blown away when you use spray can primer? And subsequently that they are firmly enough so that you can paint the details? I don't know if you've covered it in a video before. If so, I haven't been able to find it.
I'd love to see a tutorial for glass bottles / vials and maybe possible different liquids. Glowing liquids, bubbling, poison... but most importantly: what do I have to do to make it really look like a glass bottle, especially, if its only half filled.
I really like this, we've been discussing some tutorials on 'details' (covering a few types), in order to try and get wide appeal with them, if you compare our warpstone video to 'gold trim' there's a huge delta between a more/less successful video, so perhaps combining is a good idea.
Would love a tutorial on battle damage/weathering on armour
Great vid thanks....I'd like to see a tutorial on how to paint cracked or worn leather
Great session as always. How about painting a figure in a noir style to give an old black and white movie feel?
Request: Oil Drybrushing (or oil in general). NJM did it once and it seemed to make great results.
Oils are criminally underused, especially for washes. But they do have awfully long drying times. Suspect they’d be perfect for things like cloaks.
The finger painting was amazing, model looked ok 😂
Immediately I am interested as I have bought a lot of models with cloaks on them and have been avoiding them because I absolutely suck at layering. Stippling ftw.
I’m still far from perfect but find cloaks one of the very easiest things to paint.
Undercoat in a much darker shade than your final colour - so brown or dark red if you want red. Next paint the raised surfaces that would catch light - gradually removing brown from the paint mix and adding more yellow.
The video I would like to see is a basic cleaning / care / maintenance guide for the brushes. I'd be too scared to use them as I won't want to ruin them. Also, how do you clean the dampening pad? Do you even have to?
@@stevexboxfriends7562 ua-cam.com/video/wtbgBCG6PkQ/v-deo.htmlsi=94rOlwq9TW87t0w1
It would be great to see a tutorial on painting drool and other juicy bits, liquid etc….
Great tutorial - Thanks Odd seeing you use a 'dry brush' for general painting.
:) big brush life! They do go faster! 🏎🏎
As a Custodes player I can assure you I will be updating some of my oldest models using this.
For a suggestion I would love to see something on painting reptilian scales.
To my respectful paint-smith Byron(I am not sure i am saying your name right😅)
I am appreciate your selfless sharing of this marvelous paint work technique.
I have a question about the colour. What colour tone would you choose for the creamy robe like the Dark Angels ones
Please enlighten me,and thanks again for your meticulous tutorial 🤜🤛
This is a very good question, if you want a warmer base I'd start with something like a little Tausept ochre, mixed with Rakarth flesh, then you reduce the ochre for your highlights.
Much like our recent cloak video, in style, just different colours.
Cult of Paint also just dropped a very nice tutorial on cloaks, also :)
@@ArtisOpus my thanks, Lord Byron
my best request would be:
Wet blending and/or glazing on very small areas (like monster teeth e.g.). Areas that are large enough tthat they definitely should have a gradient, but are still so small that even size 1 brushes are rather large.
"Red ones go faster"
I laughed so hard when he said that.
Would love to see you do a video on painting human skin (barbarians etc.) especially using the drybrushes. Don’t think we’ve seen that from you yet Byron!
Byron, is there any chance Artis Opus could look into manufacturing and selling paint stands at the same level of quality as your model cases? I'm sure there is a market for good quality paint stands, but all the ones I can find are a bit nasty or, like the Hobbyzone products, fairly difficult to get in the UK. What I'd really love is paint stands with some kind of transparent cover that is easily opened... I have a huge dust problem in my house; I have to vacuum my paint bottles every day, just to minimise the amount of dust transfer to my models!
Your model cases went down really well with my wife; she hasn't complained about them once. Because my hobby area is in my frontroom, how the stands I already have look is a bit of a flash point between us 😂
Big brushes might win but don’t forget 99% of people will be painting their cloaks on a fully assembled model and not on its own like this tutorial and a brush that size would be difficult not to overspill on parts you don’t want it on, especially on inside of cloak, between legs or over shoulder pads
Dunno, its not so big problem, Im using masking tape and/or simple plasticard blockers fixed by blutack when model is too fiddly and I shirked from subassembly.
Silly putty is basically the world's best masking tool for minis
Paint it first. Order of operation is important.
Full assembly is pure ass, for painting. Sub-assembly for the win.
Awesome tutorials, thank you! I would be really interested in your suggestions for
large, flowing, unwrinkled/not folded SILKY skirts/fabric on larger (80 mm-ish) models. Red, if possible :)
(Imagine a samurai girl)
Request for a video - can you stipple an entire model in 30 mins to look better than slapchop! 😊
Oh wow, that'd be a challenge! Our ATST was 90mins for a big one... but it was also almost entirely one colour :D
@@ArtisOpus lol, maybe it would be a bad video. You’re always saying ‘don’t rush, don’t rush’ but this would be in contradiction to all that good advice!
Hi Byron, thank you for this tips. I am a huge fan of stippling with drybrush. Though, for the red color (and maybe others), just a question would it be legit to use a stippling pattern with white and the come back with a more saturated red instead of having an orangy highlight. Especially on the black base coat ?
Any chance you could do cream and black cloaks please and could you please do a video on saturated and non saturated paint colours as I haven’t got a clue about that. Thank you
Hi there - first greetings from germany - second ... what an amazing channel ... third ... question - can you show this also at an example figur from the Lumineth Realm-Lords (perhaps an Sentinel)? That would be awesome for the AoS players in here 😊
Wings. I'd like to see you do Pegasus or Yndrasta.
Byron made a cool video about wings with a Tzeentch demon if i'm not mistaken, lots of colours, check it out !
Any guides to using the side of your brush for highlighting? I am SO bad at it.
Gracias 💯👍🏼💯
De Nada
That first brush you used for the base coat...is that a dry brush? Why not use just a large brush? Great vid!
I understand you paint for tabletop wargaming, but it would be interesting to see your approach on a 1/4 scale display figure.
That's huge isn't it? I believe I might have a rather large space marine on it's way to me in the near future... which is close - are the recent toy ones 1/6th?
@@ArtisOpus 1/6 would totally work. For reference of what Im talking about check out a guy with a channel named Groundeffected.
How did you determine which colors to use? I’m curious because if I chose a different color how would I know which ones to use as a shade or a highlight?
Generally speaking it's a matter of sitting darker and lighter colours next to the colour at first, then testing quickly on a palette second :).
I wanted a warm cloak, with dark shadows, so orange was the natural choice, for the green one I wanted it to be more subtle and less colourful, so I went with the ivory, so my highlights got less and less colourful.
Does that help?
Ask in a new comment if not, replies get lost by YT!
How about a tutorial on adding battle damage/wounds to minis?
