Chris was unfortunate enough to be booked at AS360 in Providence Rhode Island in the middle of a Hurricane. ... me and five friends were the audience. He pinned us to the wall with his performance. we offered to empty our wallets to compensate the turnout. He had the bar serve us free instead. One of, if not the best concerts I ever saw
This man was a true and talented musician. I met him once in Seattle and he was so shy and nervous about his playing not being perfect.... I told him he had nothing to worry about, as he was sensational, Literally!
This whole album is an absolute GEM from that era. That, Daniel Lanois' records from that time, and Grant Lee Buffalo... defined a new sound for me. Living in the country was cool, passionate, sexy... not lame and soul-less like most of the garbage on the radio. It was the soundtrack to a lot of good moods for me :)
Anyone who hears this brilliant, yet tortured artist can’t come away without feeling their soul was touched by something otherworldly. Miss this guy more and more every day 😔🤘🏻🎸

In the early 90's, living on my own/alone; in my small studio apt., the radio was my companion. I just got home from work, turned radio on to start fixing my dinner and "Living with the Law" came on. It stopped me in my tracks; dropped what I was doing and I walked to my stereo and turned it up a couple of clicks. That song was like something I'd heard before, but how could that be? It was a new song. From that day, I been a total Chris Whitley fan. I cried like a baby when he died. Love and light to you Chris.
wow! can't believe i didn't play his music sooner. I'M LISTENING NOW..... I feel so stupid sometimes because it's been in my musical library for years, which is quite large. CW definitely was the real deal and that has become hard to find these days. RIP ..Mr. Whitley and thank you
I know parents should teach their kids that stealing is wrong but my dad never got mad at me for stealing his copy of this CD. In fact, I think he was kinda proud that one of his five kids was obsessed with this music. Rip CW
To me, this song is a classic "time piece" in my life. Somehow while in college I possessed a copy of Chris Whitleys' album "Living with the Law". I must have had that cassette in my car for most of the 1990s...simply a beautiful album. Every time I hear Chris's voice it take me back to that special time in my life...CW was truly and amazing artists, whose work will live forever...RIP
...a musical genius who refused to be confined by the music industry...each and every one of his albums/CDs gave us something new and original...man, one can only imagine what he'd be playing today if he had lived...

This is probably one of the best albums I've ever had the privilage of hearing. A friend of mine lent it to me on cassette years ago and I was so impressed that I returned her's and got my own. When I wore it out, I got it on CD and still play it constantly to this day. I wish I could have seen him, but never got the opportunity. RIP Chris.
i was lucky enough to see Chris play live on three occasions....twice i stood within 3 feet of him as he played. no better performer, hands down. we'll never get another one like Chris.....rest in peace brother
I did also see him and met him through a competition on KEXP radio to meet him in the dressing room. He was so timid and frustrated with his playing. I assured him that it was truly beautiful. We share the same birthdate August 31st.....and I felt a bond or closeness to him. What a musician! One of the best!!!
I love your handle, carcass moonwipe.....at 70 years young, I started to go thru my musical library, which is extensive, came across Chris Whitley and tossed it into the player. I was totally floored and I stopped in my tracks to listen to an album I had in my collection all this time but for some reason or another never gave it a listen. I'm listening now! Music has a way of humbling oneself. I thought I had a little savy but I sure missed that one. Glad I came to realize how great this man was. Thanks for inspiring me with your comment...gave me someone to vent to. Peace/out
I was at the release party for Living With the Law at a BBQ joint in Manhattan. He played about half the album solo with a National guitar & a kick-board. I walked out of there blown away, wondering what it was I had just experienced.
I am so fucking insanely jealous of you. I was too young when he was touring and i doubt he even would have played anywhere near me even if i had been old enough to get in the door of the venue. I feel so very robbed that I never got to see him live. It's like a curse almost. Seeing him live even just once to me, would a priceless gift akin to the birth of my children. His music, I can listen to it regularly for literally over half my life now, since I was 14... and it has never lost its power and that space it hits right in my solar plexus every single time. i can't say that about any other artist I've ever listened to or loved. Just Chris. Recently (FINALLY) saw Dust Radio and just wow. I miss him. The world has an eternal hole without him in it. My only comfort is that he managed to successfully pass on his tortured genius DNA. I hope he can see that every day from wherever he is now.
It's not just an aching blues song, it was a way of life for Whitley and an anthem for the outlaw, a litany of heartache and struggling to be free. Chris spent his life making this music everywhere he went, and he was just as comfortable in the studio recording masterpieces like this as he was on the highway with his thumb up. So fetch on up your greasy apron, Chris. We all miss your talent.
Heroin. Poison Girl is slang for heroin. Watch the doc on Whitley. By 2005 he had lung cancer and looked very weak. It was too late. Rehabs didn't take. Damn travesty
I first heard this gem back in 1991 on a Coca Cola Alternative Sampler cassette. At the time, Coca Cola was running a promotion with Sony where they offered an order coupon in every 12 pack cans of Coke you bought to order a sampler cassette from Sony in many of their musical genres for $1.99 each. Since most of my family are Coke Cola drinkers, lets just say that I had all 8 Coca Cola Sampler cassettes. This song was on the Alternative sampler whilst another Chris Whitley song "Kick Them Stones" was on the Rock sampler and because I liked both songs, I ended up ordering the "Living With The Law" cassette from the Columbia House Tape Club as one of the ways of fulfilling my obligations to buy 8 more tapes at regular club price at the time, which I did, and I remained a member of for many years. After reading the J-card notes and discovering that this album was produced by Malcolm Burn and recorded in New Orleans, I soon realized why it was such a great album. Malcolm Burn went on to produce Sinéad Lohan's debut album "No Mermaid," which was another great album as well. It was such a shame to learn about Chris' death a few years ago. Another great talent gone so soon.
I first heard him on the movie " Thelma and Louise". Kick the Stones was playing during the love scene between Brad Pitt and Gina Davis. I fell in live with it immediately and had to hear more! Still listening to him today. Great guitarist and love his very unique voice! You are truly missed Chris, RIP....
I was fortunate enough to meet Chris Whitley as a kid. My dad worked with him and got Chris to do a concert in New Hampshire/Vermont. My favorite song was big sky country back then but I really enjoy this one now

Unworldly, for sure. I even thought so at the time. Recently rediscovered, still the same. Too good and beautiful in all ways for this world. The imagery in the videos helps too. Saw him once, Birchmere 1993. Kept talking about Belgium.
Unique voice, great blues player, great songs, so very talented. Saw him back in the early 90s when this CD came out, fell in love with the music. Wore out a couple of cassettes then got it on CD. The year he died, my husband and I lost 5 family members between the two of us. When we heard that Chris was gone, too, it was another blow to take. At the time, every road trip we took Living with the Law was in the play list. Hadn't listened to him for years and it just happened to literally fall into my hands when I opened a closet door yesterday. Been listening to it again. What a loss.
I never heard of Chris Whitley until I heard Big Sky Country on John Mayers Sirius station. Omg, I was immediately captivated and added it to my playlist. I googled him and was sad to see had had passed away so young. I don’t know what it is about his music but it is just mesmerizing and I love it. ❤️
What a beautiful soul this guy had.....to make music like ths and the entire album. And all the people writing commments how talented he was and it is such a shame he died so young .........this guy really had somerhing .....one of my favourite albums of all time. Thankyou chris.
Oh my god!! I accidentally heard this and it blew me away. This song reached in me and touched something that I’m not sure what it is. Grown man wants to cry.
Me and my partner are sitting here in bed this morning listening and talking about Chris Whitley. And we both agreed they're not really made that way these days. Of course there are some fine songwriters today too. But the music and song of Whitley, and a few others of his kind, has another point. First of all it's a soul thing, it comes from the soul. And has an emotional connection to the singer. It's not just something he writes and sings. The songs stand and fall on the emotional commitment in them. He has of course written some great songs, song wise, like this one for instance. But he also has quite a few, more drone like and repetetive songs. Wild Country is one. Now, that's a terribly good song. Very cinematic, emotional. But it needs to be played and sung with a loads of honesty. ..it's has to be conveyed with authenticity. Otherwise it doesn't touch the listener. And that's what he had. That's what all great songwriters had/have. Authenticity, emotional connection, realness. Their songs were not studio products. They were soul reflections. They could be felt by the audience. And they had a poetic value too. Songs like that, artists like that, are sometimes hard to produce. Making a record with a young artist like that calls for a very sensitive and skilled producer. Why? Because it is very easy for the producer to get overenthusiastic, having such authentic clear material in his hands. It's easy to overproduce it, and thus destroy it. Drown the whole thing in "sound of the time" sounds, tweek the voice just a tiny bit too much.... and the whole thing is lost. Daniel Lanois did a good job on Living with the law. And you can hear him being anxious not to do just that. Almost a bit too anxious sometimes.
The last of the great rock duds before they all lost their mojo! Addicted to it on first hearing and decades later it still gets me - Chris you were my last rock icon! Miss you
Brought here by Larkin Poe ? I did and I am so grateful... :) This is purely what I like :) And will definitely explore his music and share with all of my friends :)
@SkettiFlying Chris Whitley proved you didn't have to be commercial to be a great musician, respected by your peers. It's not how many ppl he played to, it's his body of work that will stand the test of time. Not a bad song or album in the bunch. Now that says something about the man and his music...
sigh :(~ saw him live in a club an underappreciated amazing talent I still can be brought to tears by his guitar/voice He looks very young here and so haunted near the end
Woah - I didn't know who this dude was - but am completely blown away by this - this is something else! Underrated for sure! Sad to see in the comments that he is not with us anymore :( Definitely going to check out more of his stuff!
I read a review in Musician mag or one of the LA rags and decided to buy this CD. THAT was an amazing record. I’ve come to like the his record DIRT FLOOR even more. Recorded in a barn with one mic in one day. That captured Chris’s beautiful spirit the way it should have been done on the first record. Still love every fucking song. RIP Chris.
And he and his band were outstanding humans for six $10 tix
Coolest story I've heard in awhile!
He kept his Integrity. Was Mortified to hear of his passing. Now here is a man who KNEW how Romance a National..Not Easy! He deserved a longer life x

This is often the case. The insecurity is part of what drove him.

There’s a universe somewhere where Chris is a star.
No one like Chris This album has special place in my heart ❤️
This album blew my musical doors off in 91. still rocks, and so sad that Chris died so young.
What a great f.....g album, every track a monster.
Anyone who hears this brilliant, yet tortured artist can’t come away without feeling their soul was touched by something otherworldly. Miss this guy more and more every day 😔🤘🏻🎸

Whitley’s legacy remains etched into the records he made. They are the bruised works of a gifted musician who simply hurt too much.

Such a talent human. Taken to short
Now that says something about the man and his music...
sigh :(~
saw him live in a club
an underappreciated amazing talent
I still can be brought to tears by his guitar/voice
He looks very young here and so haunted near the end
It took me forever to find this song. I remember seeing hearing it when knockaround guys first came out. Finally, I am here.
You can almost hear bagpipes with this timeless tune.
Simply Beautiful 💕
I have listen to this song since the late 80's. Still love Chris's voice and the song. Oct 2020. Rest well Chris 💜 I still hear you.
It was released July 2, 1991.
I love you Mr. Whitley. Would love to sing with you. Hope to meet you in heaven.
Just truly like his music! So glad we can all watch him again.
Such a soulful contribution to music....RIP.
Woah - I didn't know who this dude was - but am completely blown away by this - this is something else! Underrated for sure! Sad to see in the comments that he is not with us anymore :( Definitely going to check out more of his stuff!
This song is perfect in the film "les hommes de main", in the scene where we see two policeman in their car in the desert we heard this song....
This man was amazing with his unique guitarsound . While his daughter trixie Whitley got a musical living in Belgium .
Wow! Just wow.
I listened to him for Hours on my Walkman....🙂
THE KING IS GONE BUT HE IS NOT FORGOTTEN.
Know this song like the back of my hand. RIP CW.
Never have seen Chris Whitley is just one of my 90s traumas
Classic album.

Brilliant...the brighter they burn, the faster they turn...your artistry was like a meteor shower...rip.
God what music he made with his voice and his National resonator guitar
I took a date to see Chris in SF in 1992. Toad the Wet Sprocket opened for him.
so sorry for our loss, just found out uv' past, dude. nice legacy left that lifetime...
I used to have his big sky country i need to get it again
His debut album living with the law is a real treasure. Great start to finish.
RIP Chris.
perfect song.
I love Chris Whitley and miss his talent… Eric Watson
