- This is a TV appearance by Chris Whitley performing Scrapyard Lullaby and Dirt Floor back in the 90's. He was appearing in a music festival in Birmingham, Alabama called City Stages.
Chris was a criminally under appreciated American Treasure. And, in my opinion, he’s one of the greatest artists of the last 50 years that this country has produced. Literally everything he ever released was exceptional.
In the 59 years I've been on this planet, and with all of the great musicians that have bless my years with so many great songs, Chris is my absolute favorite. I've been listening to him since '91 and no other voice, guitar playing, or song writing brings me to the place he does. Thanks for sharing this video with us.

What a surreal environment for this brilliant performance.
I got to meet him in Houston maybe a couple months before he passed. He had done a solo set at old location Cactus Records and afterwards sat around with audience for over an hour and signed my CD, talked about his tours and playing in front of 50k people in an Eastern Euro festival with only this dobro and a thump pedal.He described it as hypnotic when so many people go quiet to the guitar and voice. I love all his stuff. I cried when I learned of his death.
There’s an honesty and sincerity in his music that’s incredibly hard to find nowadays. You can absolutely tell he didn’t pay for monetary gains but that his drive came from a whole different place... like one of the true old school delta blues guitarists.
The host, the set, it's all cheesily outdated, but the music is TIMELESS. What a treasure! RIP

Probably my biggest musical regret is not knowing he existed while he was alive. I ache when I see him here in the video playing at such a humble venue. The guy deserved so much more.....at least enough money to live on.....so, so sad how it ended for him. Thanks for leaving us so much beauty, Chris.

I was lucky enough to see Chris Whitley ,do a one man show in London , he was amazing ! But it was sadly clear he wouldn’t live too make old bones . I think he was horribly underrated , a fabulous talent I too miss his music , I hope he will rest in peace that eluded him in life ….
Saw him live twice... opening for Tom Petty in a big arena and an intimate acoustic show at a club in Austin, Tx. Both were pure magic.

I knew Chris and the 80s when he used to play at Washington Square park and I missed a lot of school watching him play.
He was a master. One time he was all beat up because He got mugged but he had another guitar and he kept playing. Thank God he stuck it out. I miss him.😅
I used to work at HMV's flagship store in the US on 72nd(?) and Broadway in New York City. Chris Whitley did an in-store and I'd been listening to Living With The Law for a while by then. It still maintains a high rotation position in my music listening to this day, and my autographed CD remains one of my most cherished possessions. He had a country blues in him that NEVER get old.❤Love me some Chris Whitley.

Never forget hearing Chris Whitley for the first time on a cassette tape " Living with the Law" . I was painting on an old run down house listening through headphones. Don't think I've ever been affected as deeply by lyric and melody.. Opened up something in music that had never heard before or since really. He brought it at a different level. His daughter is carrying on the torch her Dad kindled! RIP Chris.
Didn't know him till Christina Vane named him for his resonator playing. Seems like a poet as well.
Been a fan for thirty years. Such a otherworldly, unique talent. To see such a raw, emotion filled performer on such a generic local morning show is a striking contrast for sure. Like a god among mortals.
I have loved this man's music since "Phone Call from Leavenworth"... There won't be another one like him.
Chris always stops me dead in my tracks and pulls me in. Such an amazing talent. RIP

Guy was a freakin BEAST. I saw him maybe 3 times and met him quickly once. That Living with the Law album totally changed the way I heard and viewed music. He was so totally overwhelming to take in it was too much most of the time. I miss him all the time.

Years ago a friend inherited a national resonator. Gawd it was pretty. We could not figure it out at all. Hard to play is an understatement. In the 90's I discovered this dude. No one plays a steel guitar like Whitley at least no one I've heard. Had the honor of meeting him and hang out a little at Slims in SF shortly before he passed. That glimmer in his eyes was not what I thought. Too soon brother. Thank you for what we received.

The true musician stays authentic in any setting. Chris certainly was that.
Sad tale with this guy, as I remember Big Sky Country hitting the charts down here in New Zealand way back when the Ozone layer was the talk, not so much global warming in the early 90's, the other milestone was The Thelma and Louise Movie, kick them stones banging out in the credits, Chris seemed destined for greatness, alas another shooting star succumbed to lifestyle and habits leftover from days on the street. Incidentally news at 11 host not really interested in his under a bridge streetlife past, for almost primetime viewers. I would imagine that some disillusioned shadow of Chris existed at the end time for him. I listen regular to his contributions of the past and must say he was underated and now almost forgotten. Thanks for the effort Mr Moore. Nice one.
I remember he was stopped at the airport when he arrived in NZ and sent back to USA for possession of marijuana. Absolutely pathetic laws.

He really could do nothing wrong. I have loved this man since I caught on. And now that his his earthly body is long gone. We still do have his sweet soul song.
I wept as I watched this.
As a solo musician myself, Chris' music and especially the raw Dirt Floor album has influenced me to no end. He was such an incredible talent and an underrated one at that. His guitar playing was just other worldly and his songwriting touches on every emotion possible. It obviously came from a very deep, personal place and that shines through all his work and that's what makes it all so real. I played a show last night at a local social club and played Chris' Accordingly and Phone Call From Leavenworth and an older guy came up to me and asked if they were my songs and I told him about Chris Whitley. He said he'd never heard of him so I showed him this clip and he said "I'll be buying all his albums as soon as I get home. I can't believe I've never heard this." I watch this clip every single day and I'll never get bored of it. I owe a lot to this man.
Chris is probably my Favorite artist. i was lucky enough to see his daughter Trixie live in Hamburg few years ago.. was great! She definitely has talent.. and her father's feel.

Not the flashiest guitarist but perhaps the most original. He lived in a world of his own and died way too young. Fortunately, his daughter Trixie carries his name and talent for all to savor.
i had the privilege of seeing chris in denver august 29th 98 or 99 at the bluebird theater, the best !

The thing about Chris is that once you listen to his music, nothing else really gets there. Totally unique. Back when I was living in LA with a bunch of different musician friends (some call that the Room 5 scene, just before the Hotel Cafe took over), it was sort of funny to show up to the Roxy to see him for the Rocket House tour, only to run into a bunch of friends that all independently decided to go to that show. There's something about Chris that is super personal, so you don't necessarily call your friends up to go to that show, you just go on your own. They were all there anyway. :) to this day, there are no songwriters that really can scratch that itch for me. If I had to pick one, it would probably be someone like Hiss Golden Messenger, but of course, the vocal is totally different, even if the songwriting styles are at least vaguely similar. Also, on the rock side of his sound, as a female counterpoint, I would pick Land of Talk all day long. If I ever meet Liz Powell, I think my first question will be if Chris was an influence for them because it sure sounds like it. I also follow Trixie, her band with Daniel Lanois was actually pretty solid (Black Dub).
I found an old cassette of his music in 1999 that somebody dumped and i listened to it..never heard of him..it was great.i kept it...i just found out he's been gone for a while..I never googled him or knew him so this is wierd bc I thought he'd look like a different person I pictured in my head. I'm so sad I couldn't meet him. His daughter I saw on a yt video is especially great. I don't know what to say bc she won't see my comments being so busy..bless her heart.. Love you all..😘

From the first time I saw Cris perform I was captivated ! His music is so haunting , Hes still wil Us , we just need to listen to the wind on a clear day and he mosey up to you , getting you to tap our feet while looking up into the sky !

this is an *Awesome* post. listening to Chris as a guitar player, i can hear how subtle and sparing he is with his slide work on most of his 'solo songs...' seeing it in action is a huge revelation and insight into his left hand technique

Never had the privilege to play a resonator, let alone one from the 30's, but, damn, his right hand is so much more gentle than I could have imagined from his recorded sound. Been gone nearly 20 years, but Chris remains a weekly listen for me. Hope that dirt floor received him into nothing/everything.💗
i only got to see Chris once, back in November of 91. i had seen the video for and heard "Big Sky Country" a few times and really liked it but other than that i didnt really know who he was. Tom Petty was coming through town and thats who i was going to see and Chris was the opener. i was glad the opening act was someone i at least liked a song by, to this day it is the ONLY time in my entire life that i saw a band live that i didnt really know and based on just that i went out and bought the album.
