The REM-only version with Stipe is good, but this one with Stipe and Kate Pierson...my goodness, what a voice, what a babe! With her, the song gets a new dimension, becoming a timeless ode to optimism.
Christ almighty, shut up. As someone who went to high school in the '90s I'm so tired of people talking like there was supposedly some period of time where everything was "good" just because it isn't now. If you were a child in the '90s, then your life was better during that time not because it was the '90s but because you were a child; rest assured there's plenty of awful shit at any era, it didn't coincidentally get worse during your own coming of age.
Rainy Jane Wow, that escalated quickly. Why you getting so pissed at a time where music reminds me of a particular time? Hell yeah it reminds me of good times, and I loved them so why not look back now and then and smile?? It's like you getting married and getting told you can't, years later, look upon that as a bad, or good thing, depending if you're a pain in the ass and he, or she. divorces you and leaves you up shit-creek without a boat, never mind a paddle. Call me crazy but reminding yourself of a cool time period you lived through is better than sitting thinking about bad shit all the time, as opposed to the before mentioned. It's obviously when i was a kid and care-free, but other music also reminds me of when I was in my 20s and when my kid was born etc...is that so fucking bad to reminisce about occasionally? I don't fucking obsess about it so you getting your knickers in a fucked-up knot over something that brings a dude back a few memories for nothing, man....but it's your ride, it's your trip, think as you please but don't assume others should all feel the same.
+Rainy Jane I was a child in '90. But this song is a tale of successful people. Thus "Shinig happy people". Was really a period of great big hill of hope. The economic of the world was growing. Only few unemployed workers was in west area. And the big wall of the comunism in Germany was broken down. And then for this reasons there was new hope, (not realistic), for a amazing future about a forever, (never ending), climb to the progress. Excuse my poor english. Sorry.
This is the wedding song from my parents, they even engraved "shiny happy people" in their wedding rings... They've been divorced for over 13 years now. Happy people indeed.
Ugh… I have a knee jerk response to “nostalgia” - like: the good old days only see that way because of rosy tinted glasses. The only good thing about the majority of any past time is fewer people and less climate chaos. And maybe the optimism that we’ll fix issues and they will stay fixed.

I love Kate Pierson because she's fucking beautiful but she is literally one of the most talented singers in the world - the way she can match pitch with other talented singers like Stipe and Cindy Wilson (B52s) to get that natural chorus that just brings vocal lines to life is un-fucking-believably satisfying to hear.

The irony steaming off this song is frankly a thing of beauty, the irony that despite the fact they loathe it with a passion, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song with such an uplifting positive vibe in its arrangement. My serotonin level legit goes straight to max when I hear that guitar.
I thought it was a banjo thanks to Sesame Street, then my brother said it was a mandolin. Turns out it was an electric guitar this whole time while Peter Buck was only playing mandolin to the sound of the guitar for the music video.

bless her... she will always be right.. i remember my mother walking me to the first day of first grade.. as I crossed the street I was focused on the crossing guard.. when we reached the corner I turned towards my mother and she was not there.. I turned to see she was standing across the street and she waved to me.. it still brings up tears as I write it.. when I was home later on she said "I will not always be here to take you to the places you need to go.. but I will always be there in your heart forever wherever you go..."

The 90's were awesome.

yes it does
Christ almighty, shut up.
Sorry.
Music was better in the early 90's as compared to just a few years later. Ugh....

Ugh… I have a knee jerk response to “nostalgia” - like: the good old days only see that way because of rosy tinted glasses. The only good thing about the majority of any past time is fewer people and less climate chaos. And maybe the optimism that we’ll fix issues and they will stay fixed.

Her name is Kate and she's named after this Kate, one of the only women I've ever felt was deserving of my naming a child after.
REM hated this song with a passion and only wrote it as a joke mocking the executives who asked them for a "happy song". They didn't expect it to be a hit.
To the point where they didn't include it on their greatest hits album. They said it was for children to access their music, but not a serious song........
As far as I recall, they took the phrase "shiny happy people" from Chinese propaganda. It's clear to see the sarcasm in this song and I love it for that, but they nailed the earworm style of music too well and I find it annoying as hell now.
Somehow I can't find myself feeling to bad for them.

Yes!!!! Very ironic .... Wonder if the band realizes this....all the children of the world love this song and video..... And so do I. If you haven't grown up by the time you're 63 well then you don't have to!
Kate Pierson is so gorgeous in this and her voice.. 😍
Google Kate Pierson nude. The carpet matches the drapes. 👩🏻🦰

One of my favorite vocal songs of all time.
If the whole world listened to this song at the same time we would elevate exponentially
“Actually, this song sucks.” -Michael Stipe
@@detroitshook maybe he doesn't like it because of the spot where he's dancing like a monkey, but it is so good. This is the similar case as with Celine Dion who hates her best song; you know which one.
Yeah, ‘if.’
@Sand Hanitizer you suck. You don't know the real art. Only idiot would suicide on this song. Maybe you are the one. I bet you're listening to some crap of the 21st century.
@ShawnDon 97well, I said the best song, didn't I, which means that we all can easily guess which one. But, yeah I get you, it's very strange to think that Titanic song would be the one.

Never at one time that I feel awkward or we're dancing and singing along with this song. 41 years old and it's still one of my favorites.
Crazy thing is Kate Pierson is 43 years old in this video.
I’m twice that age and still rocks for me!!!!🎉
she's got a great voice. Nice harmonies
