People had been moaning about how REM songs weren't happy pop songs and they were poking fun at both the idea that they *couldn't* write pop songs and the general state of vapid radio pop. I think it's an artist's folly. They were characterized by making more serious, introspective, deep songs, but then they certainly think that a more "feel good" song de-characterizes their work. Idiocy to think like that... This is being too narrow-minded! I don't see any problem with a "serious" band (which I like) doing something more upbeat sometimes! Mike Mills is really R.E.M.'s hidden talent, He doesn't often step into the limelight, but when he does the results are always great. (eg their cover of 'Love is all around' that wipes the floor with Wet Wet Wet's limp attempt)
he is actually always the one in the limelight. himself and michael do all press events and public things. Peter buck stays out of the limelight, and obviously bill
Christ almighty, shut up. As someone who went to high school in the '90s I'm so tired of people talking like there was supposedly some period of time where everything was "good" just because it isn't now. If you were a child in the '90s, then your life was better during that time not because it was the '90s but because you were a child; rest assured there's plenty of awful shit at any era, it didn't coincidentally get worse during your own coming of age.
Rainy Jane Wow, that escalated quickly. Why you getting so pissed at a time where music reminds me of a particular time? Hell yeah it reminds me of good times, and I loved them so why not look back now and then and smile?? It's like you getting married and getting told you can't, years later, look upon that as a bad, or good thing, depending if you're a pain in the ass and he, or she. divorces you and leaves you up shit-creek without a boat, never mind a paddle. Call me crazy but reminding yourself of a cool time period you lived through is better than sitting thinking about bad shit all the time, as opposed to the before mentioned. It's obviously when i was a kid and care-free, but other music also reminds me of when I was in my 20s and when my kid was born etc...is that so fucking bad to reminisce about occasionally? I don't fucking obsess about it so you getting your knickers in a fucked-up knot over something that brings a dude back a few memories for nothing, man....but it's your ride, it's your trip, think as you please but don't assume others should all feel the same.
+Rainy Jane I was a child in '90. But this song is a tale of successful people. Thus "Shinig happy people". Was really a period of great big hill of hope. The economic of the world was growing. Only few unemployed workers was in west area. And the big wall of the comunism in Germany was broken down. And then for this reasons there was new hope, (not realistic), for a amazing future about a forever, (never ending), climb to the progress. Excuse my poor english. Sorry.

The irony steaming off this song is frankly a thing of beauty, the irony that despite the fact they loathe it with a passion, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song with such an uplifting positive vibe in its arrangement. My serotonin level legit goes straight to max when I hear that guitar.
I thought it was a banjo thanks to Sesame Street, then my brother said it was a mandolin. Turns out it was an electric guitar this whole time while Peter Buck was only playing mandolin to the sound of the guitar for the music video.

I think that's kinda the point. The song doesn't work without Katie's voice. And REM was not gonna tour with Katie. And plus it's too saccharine sweet and devoid of anything of substance for such a poetic person like Stipe.

Could never understand why REM weren’t very proud of this song, it’s so uplifting.
They are proud of it but it was supposed to be a bit of a joke. People had been moaning about how REM songs weren't happy pop songs and they were poking fun at both the idea that they *couldn't* write pop songs and the general state of vapid radio pop.
But they did it a little too well. It's not what they want people to know their work from.
They wouldn't have released a single and done a video if they weren't happy with their work.

@@carterreid6750 I knew that this song was quite political so I was right to add it to my play list of political songs. I thought that it was about America's reliance on SSRU pills like Prozac which is kind of a domestic political issue. I read that it was in response to the book Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel.
I see this as something humble and open-minded! Kate Pierson's participation made this song very B52's style... and I don't think it would have been so successful without her!

The 90's were awesome.
Makes me happy and sad at the same time haha.
yes it does
Christ almighty, shut up.
Sorry.
Music was better in the early 90's as compared to just a few years later. Ugh....
