Kate Pierson a voice that elevates every song she's involved with
Her and Iggy Pop are great together on 'Candy'.
Kate is flawless!
Kate is sexy as hell
I thought that was her.
Truly one of a kind! Think she has a good track with Moby too - or rather a cover of a B’52
When my daughter was battling cancer this song made her so happy . Stipe, Buck, Mills and Kate from the B52's. My daughter has been gone for 9 years now. Everytime I hear SHP I get tears, She's moved on, but her favorite songs are still playing.
Joel Heaton this is worst test in life to watch your children go on front of you I pray to god keep her happy where ever she is and strength to carry on with her lovely memories.
So much love to you, dear heart,
+Joel Heaton Everything happens for a reason, something good will come out of it even if its hard to believe. Our egos find difficult to addapt to the ways of the universe but in the big picture of things everything has meaning. Im sorry for your loss I cannot even imagine how difficult it must be to lose a child, I hope your experience helps other people and dont forget what she would have wanted you to do, keep going, try to be as happy as you can and feel always the love, help others and let others help you cause we are one big family, the consciousness of your daughter cant ever die, the body is just our tool to navigate this world, we are all the same with different roles.
Hug
You just made me cry... I really hope you can find your inner peace after she's gone
You can't help feeling happy listening to this song. Kate is stunning.
She is, keeps me coming back to watch her, Cheers Olan!
Kind of the antithesis to how the world is now especially.
If everyone was happy. No one would be on drugs. If everyone loved their partners. No one would be divorced.
We wouldn't be so politically divided right now if everyone was happy either. And everything comes down to politics now to. Which isn't a very happy thing.
🎉❤😂😂😂
And a wonderful dancer
Stroke of genius bringing in Kate Pierson for this. She takes it to another level, like she did to every song. The chick was just a vocal goddess & pretty nice on the eye to boot.
They have known each other since his college days.
Truth
And a great dancer
Yes! I saw the B-52s on Earth Day 1990 in NYC. Almost a million people in Central Park. The earth was literally shaking under our feet during "Love Shack"!
I also saw them in a casino outside Seattle in 2009.
They put on great shows!
This song wouldn't be the same without the voice of Kate Pierson... her voice, her charisma, her energy take it to another level.
Whoever did her cosmetic surgery, took it to another level.
@@jondough930sorry but you cannot create that youthful body with surgery neither her natural looking face. She just looks awesome, even more considering she is 43 in the clip
Couldn't agree more. At the time I questioned REM's choice, but she made it happen for me.
I wish I danced like her lmao
@@infinitydreamzz wow she was like 11 or 12 years older than Michael, that's a lot and they don't seem that far apart, but to be honest, and I know bc the same happens to me, Stipe was almost bald and that ages you a ton

I learned how to be sarcastic from this song.
@@marvinthemaniac7698 "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" was a propaganda campaign started in China after the massacre at Tiananmen Square in 89. I feel like the sarcastic undertones of this song really capture that vibe of "be happy or else" especially when he makes a few references to the alternative which is complete misery. This song, for me anyway, is much deeper than the surface.
It's literally satire. A joke.
No it's a song.
Best song they ever did. Not miserable, hateful stuff like most of their oveur.
REM are one of those bands who appeal to literally everybody. Song is terrific and I think that Kate's vocals really added to the song elevating it to legendary levels.
Onde anda a Kate??

They don't appeal to me. I was a student when this came out and they played it all the time in the student union, I hated it.

The band may have hated performing this popular song, but it sure helped lift me up during some of the darkest days of my life. The Out of Time collection of songs is still a lifetime best of all time for me.
I bet they didn't hate the cash sluicing in from this song.
If I could “Like” your comment more than once, I’d do it at least 1,000 times.
hi, why they have been hated?
They? The song is disliked by Micheal Stipe. Probably because it's happy, the lyrics are clear and it isn't pretentious.@@Adirahell1

It's funny because this video is almost 30 years old and it' still ironic. Anyone in America who is shiny and happy hasn't been paying attention. We have not attained equality; black people are still being killed by police over and beyond white people, trans folk heroes are denied and rejected from Military service and we have a racist as President.

Kate Pierson is criminally underrated and made this song 10x better than it would have been. She deserves more credit for her great voice.

Such a distinctive voice
@@Dman3827 Those caught my attention first in this video, especially her perfect figure ;-)
She’s brilliant. She did that song with Iggy Pop - “Candy”, absolute gold. Lovely to look at but even better to hear. Definitely underrated - & when I listen to some of these so-called “artists”, auto tuned beyond belief, I just shake my head & think “Nah, not interested”.
She basically made the song and they knew it. Doesn't she look like she's very short, and her arms are usually covered by sleeves or gloves. Maybe she has a lot of tatoos.
Kate's voice in this song still makes me shiver to this day. What a voice!!
She is a star , and talented girl and thats enought ..
Aha what a beautiful voice
She is gorgeous and has an amazing voice!

The song, the entire is production is cool - but my God is Kate at another level. Perfectly natural and flowing. Her energy is captivating.
I still remember hearing this on the radio and thinking “is that Kate Pierson? What is going on?” Then I saw the video. I had been a 52’s fan for years, and I’d know that voice anywhere. I still love this song. The 90’s were one of my favorite eras. Good times!
Kate's voice is on another level - so clear, strong, pure and distinctive.
I was young when this came out so I didn’t listen the same way. As an adult I can’t get enough of Kate in this song...I now appreciate the quality of her voice and talent to use it as she does. Nothing against Michael Stipe or the rest of the band

There's an undercurrent of darkness to this song that I don't think a lot of people notice.
It's subtle, but it's there.
Yeah, the way all is too happy, it feels uncanny, and the male singer's lyrical delivery. Probably has to do with the song's backstory
"Put it in the ground where the flowers grow"
Well it was written after they saw a propaganda poster. Knowing that changes the song at least for me.
@@tallsoldier actually, it is just an urban legend
It’s nothing so deep or meaningful, it’s a piss take at the expense of their record company who asked them to do a ‘happy song’ so they did this. That’s literally it. It’s funny really
Kate's voice is crystal clear and so melodious. B52's rock too.
Heck yes. More punk heavy for B-52's and R.E.M. was a college heavy thinking person's band, absolutely RELEVANT today. Start with R.E.M into the night and if your lucky when early morning comes-B-52's till you see the Sunrise. Generally a common best Sunday morning you could ever experience! Does the meaning of the song translate well into Japanese? I have read that sarcasm is sometimes lost in translation.

"Texarkana" and " near wild heaven" .(both from "Out of time") Mike Mills sang lead vocals on this songs. Really great!!
szym0n3287 He's an incredible backing vocalist live, he's an absolute perfectionist when he performs. Mike Mills is incredibly underrated when it comes to what made REM so great.
Mike Mills is really R.E.M.'s hidden talent, He doesn't often step into the limelight, but when he does the results are always great. (eg their cover of 'Love is all around' that wipes the floor with Wet Wet Wet's limp attempt)
he is actually always the one in the limelight. himself and michael do all press events and public things. Peter buck stays out of the limelight, and obviously bill
What I love most about this song is that it can be applied when you need something happy (genuine), 'happy' (snarky), or "HAPPY?" (I'm dying inside.). Works for all three.
Amooo!!! ouvindo em 2024 e pra sempre
Could never understand why REM weren’t very proud of this song, it’s so uplifting.
They are proud of it but it was supposed to be a bit of a joke. People had been moaning about how REM songs weren't happy pop songs and they were poking fun at both the idea that they *couldn't* write pop songs and the general state of vapid radio pop.
But they did it a little too well. It's not what they want people to know their work from.
They wouldn't have released a single and done a video if they weren't happy with their work.
@@roderickramsay8538 "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" was taken from a North Korean propaganda poster. The song like you said was kind of written on a dare.
@@carterreid6750 I knew that this song was quite political so I was right to add it to my play list of political songs. I thought that it was about America's reliance on SSRU pills like Prozac which is kind of a domestic political issue. I read that it was in response to the book Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel.
I think it's an artist's folly. They were characterized by making more serious, introspective, deep songs, but then they certainly think that a more "feel good" song de-characterizes their work. Idiocy to think like that... This is being too narrow-minded! I don't see any problem with a "serious" band (which I like) doing something more upbeat sometimes! I see this as something humble and open-minded! Kate Pierson's participation made this song very B52's style... and I don't think it would have been so successful without her!
Actually probably their best song. Sometimes when you give up your pretentious seriousness, you come up with something good.
Their voices go so well together.

Eu 🙋🏾♀️
REM hated this song with a passion and only wrote it as a joke mocking the executives who asked them for a "happy song". They didn't expect it to be a hit.
To the point where they didn't include it on their greatest hits album. They said it was for children to access their music, but not a serious song........
As far as I recall, they took the phrase "shiny happy people" from Chinese propaganda. It's clear to see the sarcasm in this song and I love it for that, but they nailed the earworm style of music too well and I find it annoying as hell now.
Somehow I can't find myself feeling to bad for them.
So the old man represents the executives in the video, and the younger people dummies enjoying life but without thinking.

My Mom passed before I understood why she liked this song so much. Thank you so much for helping me understand her through this video.
:)
The 90's were awesome.
Makes me happy and sad at the same time haha.
yes it does
Christ almighty, shut up. As someone who went to high school in the '90s I'm so tired of people talking like there was supposedly some period of time where everything was "good" just because it isn't now. If you were a child in the '90s, then your life was better during that time not because it was the '90s but because you were a child; rest assured there's plenty of awful shit at any era, it didn't coincidentally get worse during your own coming of age.
Rainy Jane Wow, that escalated quickly. Why you getting so pissed at a time where music reminds me of a particular time?
Hell yeah it reminds me of good times, and I loved them so why not look back now and then and smile??
It's like you getting married and getting told you can't, years later, look upon that as a bad, or good thing, depending if you're a pain in the ass and he, or she. divorces you and leaves you up shit-creek without a boat, never mind a paddle.
Call me crazy but reminding yourself of a cool time period you lived through is better than sitting thinking about bad shit all the time, as opposed to the before mentioned.
It's obviously when i was a kid and care-free, but other music also reminds me of when I was in my 20s and when my kid was born etc...is that so fucking bad to reminisce about occasionally?
I don't fucking obsess about it so you getting your knickers in a fucked-up knot over something that brings a dude back a few memories for nothing, man....but it's your ride, it's your trip, think as you please but don't assume others should all feel the same.
+Rainy Jane I was a child in '90. But this song is a tale of successful people. Thus "Shinig happy people". Was really a period of great big hill of hope. The economic of the world was growing. Only few unemployed workers was in west area. And the big wall of the comunism in Germany was broken down. And then for this reasons there was new hope, (not realistic), for a amazing future about a forever, (never ending), climb to the progress. Excuse my poor english. Sorry.
Music was better in the early 90's as compared to just a few years later. Ugh....
This should be the world's anthem. Stop wars, hate, and hunger. We need a global love movement ✌🏽❤️☮️
That's why I love music. For just a little bit of time, the immediate world and all of life's experience in superposition ..... harmless as a song

This is the most uplifting song that I ever heard in my entire life
Me too!😊
I mean, it's satire about the massacre at Tiananmen Square back in the day. But it is genuinely uplifting 🤣
Beautiful song that would have never been as great without Kate Pierson singing and in the video she's beautiful
red ink.
Stipe looks like he's enjoying making this vid...most peeps don't know he absolutely hated this song...troof!
@@robertallen6710 I'm sure when the song originally came out and was written he loved it it was radio played to death of course he hated it ask any artist their least favorite song and it's the most beaten up by any radio station in the country
@@robertallen6710 who wouldn't enjoy making this video with the beautiful and gorgeous Kate Pearson singing alongside of you oh my god a dream come true
@@robertallen6710 he didn't and doesn't hate it. he has said that it wouldn't be a song that he would hold up as an example of a defining r.e.m. song
This song is so f'n brilliant in every way...
The guitar lick is just UGH! Chefs KISS! 🥰
Watching this literally made me so happy.
+Zachary H. this is beautiful song. Many dislike it because pop in the 90s (specially REM) was supposed to be moody and depressing. Unlike this song.
+tothatl i do like it too, but knowing REM, its more than likely supposed to mean something else... plant it in the ground where the flowers grow? still i like it along with the love song a j alfred ....
+tothatl Isn't this song ment to be depressing though? I get a sarcastic feeling all over
Mathias Persson I don't know man, I don't get into the deep meanings of songs. I just listen and enjoy, and when I listened to this song and saw this video, I was a happy camper.
+Zachary H. nothing wrong with that I'm smiling from ear to ear right now and a minute after this tune I'll be back to me old miserable self
If REM didn't want this to be a hit, they shouldn't have had that awesome killer guitar riff. I'm gonna make it a point in life to learn that.
Peter can't help himself, awesome killer guitar riffs is just who he is
or have Kate Pierson help out by injecting 80% of the energy that the song has.
Do it. I'm nowhere near decent, but this is super easy to learn and it made me a little happier.
it sounds like 100% sitcom music theme to be honest
Go!
One of the greatest songs of the 1990's......
I love listening to this song. More so when I’m feeling upset/mad. Once it starts it’s like whatever had me feeling that way just perished and I’m in such a great mood. Like it wasn’t worth it getting upset, instead be happy and move on.
The harmonies by the chick from the B-52s is the best part of the song.
She's always the best part of any song she's in. Her voice is the voice of a goddess that'd have Ariel the Little Mermaid packing her bags on X-Factor.
I know it's not their favourite kind of song but it brings back incredible memories of having a good time. What a fantastic song!
i love it.
.
That's right, there are people who recognize their smallness but don't let themselves be overwhelmed by it, so it shines and pleases a lot.
I love that REM created a song they hated, and yet it's one of my favorite songs of all time.
