Man I love and miss Chris. I like to tell anybody who will listen that I got to hang with him one night. He was in Buffalo in support of Dirt Floor. I was doing some promo work for Messenger Records to hype the show and ended up with a bunch of posters that Chris was nice enough to sign for people. After we were done I just asked if he wanted to go out for a beer with the group we were with. He said sure and before I new it my wife and I were driving him to the bar. It was surreal because we were both such huge fans. He was a kind and amazingly gifted man who continues to touch and bless my world.

Never forget hearing" Living with the law" the first time. Listened through headphones on a cassette player for three days painting an old junker house. The songs burned so vividly deep in the groove. Don't believe I have ever heard the equal before or since! Left me with a musical longing that I have yet to touch. The lyrical content laid it out sort of like a trip down a mountain road in a dense early morning fog looking into an all day rain Inspiring with urgent desperation! RIP Chris Whitley.

Had to respond as your recollection also resonated with me. I was a teenager listening to MuchMusic (Canadian equivalent to MTV) back in the day, and when I first heard "Big Sky Country", and later the whole album (also on cassette) it created an feeling of intensity, and this sonic landscape, that I have not experienced before or since, either. I have it on vinyl now, and it takes me back to that place and time, but it also just takes me somewhere else, somewhere that only Chris Whitley could create. Such a bright light, and loss.

That guitar melody at the end, like in so many of his songs, always seems like it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. Until the next time. And the next. Even after 30 years. Hope you’re playing somewhere else brother. 💔

I started listening to Chris when the Poison Girl ep came out. Finally got to see him on Dirt Floor with Johnny Lang. Incredible sense of awe when I hear his music. I wept at the news of his passing. Sorrow and gratitude still eminates at the playing of his music. His songs resonated in my soul like none other. Tragic. Genius with grit. Only one who comes close for me is Tom Waits.

It was one of those things, It's Always one of those things, I'm in the lobby of the Granada Theater ( Dallas Tx, ) waiting for the Aussie band The Church, when I struck up an conversation with a very nice couple, and somehow Chris came up in the conversation, and I told them that I missed two of his shows, and that was when he told me that Chris had died, I was floored. Now I realize that one of the shows were postponed due to the cancer.

I had the good fortune to meet Chris and videotaped his Rocket House tour which is also on UA-cam as Chris Whitley and Live. Based on his body of work (over 100 original songs) and his musicianship (his mastery of the National Guitar) he should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. But it will never happen, because some idiot on the selection committee thinks Dolly Parton should get in instead. This performance of "I Forget you Every Day" is absolutely beautiful. Thank you Kate for uploading it. Rest in Peace Chris.
