UNLIMITED $$$ Act 1: No Risk Pickpocketing with GEAR! locations, build & tactics in Baldur's Gate 3

- There are 6 pieces of OP gear in Act 1 which will allow a level 4 rogue to steal almost anything with no risk. Getting just four pieces of these mostly easy to loot items will make most sleight of hand skill checks guaranteed to succeed. You can clean out a vendor's inventory in one turn without being encumbered with little to no chance of failing a pickpocketing sleight of hand check.
Further, the game does not tell you how your gear and stats affects your chances of pickpocketing. You might think a 16 roll would mean a 25% chance of success, but we had a 99.9% chance of success stealing 1618 gold and did not even hit that roll when we succeeded without getting caught. The game does not tell you about your two 1d4 sleight of hand bonuses from guidance and the Shapeshifter's Boon Ring.
The magic items and locations are as follows:

5:24 (optional) Silver Pendant (guidance concentration spell 1d4 on checks) X: 148 Y: 375 just north of Nautiloud ship on a hill in a skeleton
6:01 Graceful Cloth (plus 2 to dexterity up to a maximum of 10) sold by merchant in Mountain Pass map X: -42, Y: -136; WARNING!!! Do not enter the mountain pass until you have resolved the Tiefling refugees issue or have stopped the druid's ritual in the Emerald Grove.

Rogue (Astarion) with lvl 3 Arcane Trickster Subclass, 17 dexterity at lvl 1, 18 or 19 dexterity after lvl 4 feat; You want maximum sleight of hand and dexterity from leveling; Choose "disguise self" and "fog cloud" spells; "fog cloud" is under other spells at lvl 3

Thanks to the folks that commented below. The Graceful Cloth gives advantage on Sleight of Hand checks through Cat’s Grace. In that case you should wear the Gloves of Power. Hovering over the Sleight of hand check in the log tells you all the rolls. The roll that is displayed after a pickpocket is only the 1d20 (advantage) roll. When you hover over your bonuses it does not include the + from gear, but that can be seen hovering of log. Most of my rolls with modifiers were in the 30s and I think the minimum possible roll is +14 (SOH) +1 (disguise) +1 (guidance) = 16. Nothing in moonrise has over a 16 target in most instances so everything in act 1 or 2 is practically risk-free for a level 4 rogue.
The difficulty of the item to steal might be 27 for a high-end scroll. The target roll that is shown is this difficulty minus your sleight of hand and dexterity modifiers. My Astarion currently has +5 dex and +8 soh, so the target shown would be 27 - 8 - 5 = 14. So it's just telling you what you need to roll based on dex and soh. You can then further subtract a 1 from disguise and guidance, so your must-make roll for this item would be a 12 (with advantage). I calculate this to be a 70% chance of success, but it's far from automatic. I've failed several of these. (I wonder if the 'Lucky' feat would help with this?)

- use a cleric or person with boots that can cast feign death spell (level 3 I think)
- donate to the merchant 1000 gold with that character to get their friendliness bar up to green
- now that cleric can target the merchant with friendly spells
- cast feign death on them
- cast guidance, cats grace, shapeshifting, whatever you want on Astarion (or your thief)
- cast smoke cloud so nobody sees you
- pickpocket
even if the pickpocket fails, the merchant is still sleeping from feign death and you can pickpocket again and again with no penalty as many times as you want no matter how many times you fail.
After you finish pickpocketing, the merchant will still be sleeping for at least 7-8 turns, so you can just slowly walk away and do your things.
I've had experience where the merchant didnt even notice he got pickpocketed and did not go look around

When using Astarion, make sure to use his vampire bite function at the start of every day, it will give you a 'Happy' status +1 to pretty much all skill checks and ability rolls.

If you want to make the build more cost effective / less time restraining, you can add a cape from early act 2.
If you save the grove n all the children etc mattis is at last light in and sells 1 cape. Its effect is to create a fog cloud around you any time you disengage, so you can just run around infinitely disengaging to create as much fog as you want
I did this build on the halfling hireling since realistically one doesn't need to have a character built for pickpocketing 100% of the time. I took 4 levels in bard to have feign death to cast on merchants after befriending them.
When you give up the chest, you can actually steal it back easily if you get everything mentioned in the video ahead of time except for the gloves. What you can do is once you have everything, give her the chest, then go buy the gloves of thievery sunce you will then have access to the merchants, and finally steal the chest back frim her. Theres a high level boss in the chest that you can keep to use in emergencies to weken your enemies.
Olly and the other guy were dead when i retrieved the chest, so im not sure if them being alive changes anything.
You can actually loot the strongbox, you just gotta sneak behind the two, lockpick it, and then loot it, BEFORE the cutscene that starts the gnoll fight. I can confirm this works, and Zarys will open up her trader for you. When you chat with her, do choose to not mention the cargo - and all is peachy. Of course, Rugan is still getting flogged as we speak for losing the cargo - but honestly, who cares :D
Good tip. See my more recent video. The Graceful Cloth makes the gloves of thievery obsolete and it is better to use the gloves of power. There are also additional buffs mentioned in that video.

There’s the feign death boot of apparent death and fog cloud hammergrim mist amulet in Act 2, no need to have a cleric do this.
Yeah, cast it however you want. The cleric is something almost everybody has. You still need two characters for guidance and fog since they are concentration spells.
I'm doing my first honor mode run now. And money is tight lol. I'm going to try some of these tricks. Thanks. I don't particulary care for cheats. This isn't cheating. My paladin won't like me allowing the thief to be a thief, but he's just going to have to deal with it lol. It's either this, or back to eating 15 apples, 2 wines and a loaf of stale bread dinners again. :P (Yes i heard shadowheart say that once)
use other character to cast hold person spell when you on dialogue. next step use astorian to steal.
The target number you see is kind of a lie. It already accounts for your straight bonuses, but not for your die rolls like from guidance and shapeshifters boon ring. So it's a little deceptive as to what number you need to roll. Also 1s do critically fail. If you have a halfling (hireling for example) you can improve those odds.
Anyways you can check the logs to see what the actual target number was. I wish it showed the actual target not accounting for bonuses and advantage, because the number they show in the pickpocket screen is quite misleading
The description that I read says there is not a crit fail. With advantage its 0.25% chance of a double 1. I’d have to see that in the log to believe it one way or the other.
Also checking the logs the shapeshifter's boon ring bonus is bugged and isn't getting applied. Looking it up, seems this bug's been around for weeks already without a patch :(
It was applied in my log tests today. Take it off and put it on. Make sure your rogue is disguised.

Not really necessary to go Arcane Trickster for the Disguise Self - in camp chest you have the Mask of the Shapeshifter, which gives you unlimited uses of Disguise Self. I used it to rob Auntie Ethel for Elixirs of Hill Giant Strength, it's sweet

No advantage is the better of two 1d20 rolls. +2 dexterity affects your + to any roll. Advantage is way better than +1 SoH in most cases except when plus 1 makes the item risk-free when it otherwise would be risky. In the video an item that had +15 would become risk-free and only in that case the GoP would be better than GoT. Don’t confuse saving throws with checks. They r different.
I thought Graceful Cloth also had the effect of Advantage on rolls, but it might be only on Lockpicking and Disarming
The Graceful Cloth does grant advantage on Dex based skill checks (like sleight of hand) via Cat's Grace, so the gloves are redundant if you have the armor.@@vitorsamuel777
@vitorsamuel4875 You're correct. Linus might have missed the armor grants the wearer Cat's Grace, which gives: "Creature gains advantage on Dexterity checks and only takes half damage from falling." Slight of Hand is a dexterity ability check. You can see that it gives an advantage in the combat log.
@@LinusWilson "Dexterity checks" which SoH is indeed a subclass of Dex :) SoH is listed under the Dex category in the Skills tab. You can also see evidence of this applying in the combat log: (1d20, *Advantage*) when using Cat's Grace.

It works. I don’t know the future. It is a game mechanic. It is unlikely to be nerfed. CDPR constantly has changed item stats and its skill tree for Cyberpunk 2077, but most devs don’t do that.

There is a content creator who does those things, the one who did the owlbear jump off a mountain of stacked boxes. Pretty sure she's done the million gold thing.
A lot of this is not act 1
All the gear can be obtained in act 1. You can use it to pickpocket folks in any Act.
