I enjoyed this episode, but I couldn't stop looking at Sal's shirt and thinking Captain America just exploded a guy.
"Oh darn it. Tony...yeah, it's me. I did it again."
😂😂
He Xenomorph'd Sal!!!
Must be John Walker
Yeah it looks like a fastball special gone wrong
“I need a comfort book.”
Things said moments before disaster.
Sal screaming "IT'S NOT DNA!" just made my day, holy shit
No matter what, Comic Pop never fails to put a smile on my face, as I'm sure it does for people all over the world. Keep staying awesome, guys!
To answer Ben's question about the X-Gene: after House of M, the X-Gene simply disappeared. The mutants' death caused Hank McCoy to start his trek across the world to find a way to resurrect mutant-kind. On the journey, Hank discovered that the X-Gene was just gone (X-Men: Endangered Species).
Man, that plot point sounds so absurd when you say it out loud like that. Imagine if you went to the doctor’s office and they just tell you, “We’re sorry, but the gene that gave you superpowers has just disappeared. It’s straight-up not there anymore. The chromosomes that allowed you to defy the laws of physics themselves have ceased to exist on a conceptual level.” That would be really fucked up I think
Im just imagining Logan pouring out a bottle of Maple Crown Royal whiskey for his fallen Alpha Flight brethren 😅
I would absolutely listen to y’all debate the merits of the fifty state initiative for at least as long as the Doomsday Clock episode.
I'll second that
"It was Paralax" made me laugh so hard I was crying. I love you guys.
I think Marvel and DC accidentally got their memos swapped and Batman got the Avenger’s mandate to “get back to basics”
I didn’t heed your warning, I played the drinking game, I passed out in the first 30 mins
"There's a lot of words in this book. Maybe one of them says that." 🙂
I, too, yearn for the days of the New Avengers once again. Preferably written by Al Ewing. Or Jed McKay, if he ends up rebranding the main Avengers book during his current run on the title. And it absolutely _must_ be drawn by Pepe Larraz - that part is non-negotiable.
Edit: Thank you to the person in the replies who helped me remember that Al Ewing _already did_ a run on New Avengers - the one in 2016 where Sunspot was the leader and the main villain was the Maker from the Ultimate Universe. That book ruled so hard, I can’t believe I forgot about it until just now.
Al Ewing actually did write a run on New Avengers around 2016. It was pretty good.
@@jclombardi8471 Oh shit, you’re right, I completely forgot about that! That’s the one where he brought the Maker over to 616, right? God, that book was so much fun.
I got this image in my head of Iron Man serving the energy up like a volley ball and the Sentry spiking it into the sun.
Just want you guys to know I am intentionally not watching your back issues so I can stockpile them all up for a massive 12 hour flight to Europe. Love you guys
And to think I didn't watch them for three weeks straight just so I can have something to enjoy during holidays 😂
I'm surprised Bendis didn't put Quake on the team, considering that's exactly what he did with Naomi during his JL run.
He was busy shoving Jessica jones down our throats though.
I ❤Jessica jones.
Great convo. Sal's point about Bendis' control of the line leading to this illusion of cohesion is so important. When every character on the Avengers has their own solo title, it's hard to make anything that happens with the group stick without pulling Bendis levels of control (or doing the time jump Hickman did in the later 3rd of his run)
It's also wild to think that before the period this book came out, Ms Marvel went a full 30 years without her own solo series. People talk about Bendis saving Luke Cage from relative obscurity, but Carol wouldn't have had the star for the later DeConnick relaunch if she wasn't a Bendis fave either.
Oh....the whole Xorn debacle. Good luck
The only time Xorn has ever been a good character since his original appearance was in Hickman’s Powers of X, and that was because Hickman just ignored the entire debacle with Magneto and just made his own OC named Xorn, who is from the future, and also just wants to die. I love Future Xorn.
I still have a soft spot for Xorn turning into Magneto @@halfmettlealchemist8076
18:40 - Sal was cooking
I'd love to see Sal cover the entirety of Aaron's run on Avengers because WTFFFFFFFF
They covered the first arc on here, I believe - the one with the… _sigh_ …Evil Celestials. (God, the fact that I even have to type those words to describe that story is a testament to what a clusterfuck that run was in its entirety.)
Personally, I want to see them cover the Vampire War arc, because that’s where Aaron’s run peaked IMO.
I miss these guys too Sal. This is the best Era for the Avengers imo
Yes! More New Avengers! I love this series for all the reasons Sal does. Glad to see him covering it again.
A big fireball of mutant energy comes devastatingly to Earth and transforms 1 person. Not a single mention of the Phoenix force. What a missed opportunity.
The New Avengers help prove that the early to mid 2000s were Marvel at its peak
I love New Avengers. Glad to hear you talk about it again.
Hi! Im actually taking a Criminology class and the thing cage was talking about was actually real! HOWEVER the crime rates went down because (as a whole) because crime was trending downward anyway! Wild how a video can collide with my studies lol!
The parallax joke by Ethan killed me😂
Aw yeah baby! Time 2 get the popcorn ready.
"He watched Rob" i love it.
"I just watched Rob and heard him talk about it for a few minutes" - Sums up my comic book knowledge
I think Donny cates is the only writer in the last 5 years who could write something as good and monumental as new avengers.
I hope he’s taking the time he needs to heal after his car crash, that said, I eagerly await whatever his next project is
Not to discredit Donny Cates’ work (I heard about his accident, and I sincerely hope he’s doing well), but I think Al Ewing deserves to be included in that category of writers as well. Immortal Hulk alone puts that man ahead of, like, 95% of the rest of Marvel’s current writing staff.
@@halfmettlealchemist8076 as far as quality of writing I agree 100% but I don’t thing Ewing plays with the same sort of cards one would need in their hand to write a great new avengers type book. I think it’s best exemplified with his guardians run compared to ewings. I think Ewing is more analogous to Hickman with his deeper emphasis on the world building and character relations and cates is more like bendis with bombastic plots and snappy dialogue. Both are great and have their place in storytelling but I think new avengers needs the latter more than the former.
@@seanberrodin801 That’s a fair perspective on things - I can’t argue with your logic. Ewing is a writer with priorities, same as any other, and it’s totally fine if his priorities for a book don’t really reflect your own desires of what you want that book to be. I get that feeling.
Have you been reading the recent Jed MacKay run on Avengers, by any chance? I feel like, so far, it’s been the closest thing to Bendis’ New Avengers in terms of tone that the line has been in years - there’s definitely been an emphasis on smart and snappy banter and blockbuster action/stakes in the past few issues that I think matches what you were looking for.
@@halfmettlealchemist8076 yeah I’ve been reading it ajd I agree. I just don’t love the team so it’s hard for me to be invested. I will say I’m not anti a Ewing tenure on avengers if he’s for a plan for it but I feel like It’s still too close to hickmans monumental run on the title. There will be too much comparison to the detriment of both books.
So what you're saying is, the mutant power energy became a spirit bomb? That'd be something I'd like to see
I would like to mention that Houston Texas had Kain scarlet spider as their superhero for a while. Also gotta love the Harbor Patrol shirt
Binary actually has a really good comeback in her current run
The Magneto Protocols!!!
To be fair, if Bendis had watched a Rob episode on Binary, he would be wayyyyy more knowledgeable then surface level! 😂
Gotta get back to the New Avengers? Yes. But more importantly we MUST get back to a new episode of Harbor Patrol!
Ben knows what’s up.
I swear you guys always keep me entertained when I have a long ride or have to wait somewhere for a long time. But I mostly hear you guys, watching all the videos, at work. 😊
Keep up the great work
When I was younger I really liked the New Avengers and I still do, but no that I know I'm older and I know more about the history of the team, it's really sours the run that Bedis took a dump on stalwart members like Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Vision because they weren't as popular as characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine.
Here’s my question. They sent Spider-Man to see if they could depower Michael. If he hadn’t been interrupted from doing that, would Spider-Man have found a way to artificially extract this energy from mutants, therefore finding a cure for Mutants?
My personal answer to this question is that yes, Spidey could have potentially found a cure for Mutants if given enough time, but he would also destroy the cure immediately because he would know that SHIELD/the government could never be trusted with that much power, and he would know a thing or two about what must come with great power. Plus, Spidey’s an ally, and he wouldn’t want to make the X-Men mad at him because they’re his friends.
You guys really help out my week for entertainment. I thank you for everything you guys do.
As a comic book fan from Wisconsin. I always assumed someone at Marvel just really hated Kenosha. so he invented Genosha vent his frustration.
You know what I'd love next? "Spider-Man: Back to black". The most hardcore (in the good sense of the word) Spider-Man comic I've had the pleasure to revisit recently.
51:50 so this is the inspiration for the villain in "My hero academia"
Comicpop is some of my favourite content. It also has the side effect of also making me really sleepy and being perfect nighttime listening
I loved New Avengers when it came out, but I gotta admit.. hearing Sal talk about, it seems kinda dumb and empty in retrospect. I still really like it :P
You know what be fun, comic book science with Ethan 😂
never see these when theyre uploaded but whenever i check and see a new back issues I make a pog face
Straight away i was like that sounds like korvac, well yep lol
Thanks, boys. Always good having more Bendis episodes
I completely forgot about this volume. It left like no impact on my brain.
Sal is that a Jim Lee drawn Captain America?
Yes!
@comicpop sweet, the first 15mins of the episode I was waitaminute...is it? Could it be? Thanks I just had to know. 😀
@5:17 That’s not how energy works, at least not magical energy.
Man, I have not read this story in years!!!
Is it wrong that the only reason I was interested in the New Avengers is because Spider-Man was on the team?
Edit: At 29:36 Sal vindicates my opinion. 😂
I think you’re one of many. I know that’s why I read it and a big reason why I loved it. It helped that bendis actually wrote him pretty well.
I promise you weren't the only one 😅
Bendis was thinking why are the biggest names in marvel weren't on an avengers team like Spiderman and Wolverine and then he thought I will put the biggest under dogs in marvel aka the Street Level Characters
I'm pretty sure the readership on this book was split between like 40% reading just for Spider-Man 40% reading just for wolverine and then 20% of Avenger audience.
That’s why he is there. Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, and Cap all together are why I like it. I also like Ronin too but I wish it was daredevil
I love the shirt Sal!
YESSS!!! MORE NEW AVENGERS!!!!
Idk about her miss marvel days but Carol can go binary at any time now or if she absorbs enough energy
I dig the vintage Captain America shirt - used to see it advertised in comics all the time during the early 90s.
I wish the New Avengers would comeback.
Oooh! Great choice!
The New Avengers vs Magento does really awesome and super interesting grated like sal said it does take place right before civil war happens but honestly as a story itself its a interesting series to see the new avengers deal with the registration act and magneto at least in my opinion. :)
Despite the quality of the story, I absolutely love Bendis’ Avengers and hope that we continue to get more of it on the couch
Could you guys do a playlist of all of Brian Michael Bendis’ Avengers books in reading order? From Avengers: Disassembled to AvX.
One of the reasons I dislike civil war is because it cut this run short.
As someone that liked the Morrison Xorn/Magneto reveal...this is frustrating.
I was completely fed up with today until this.
Wait!
Santa is a Mutant in the Marvel Universe if I remember correctly, Was he affected by House of M?!
Sal where did you get awesome Cap Shirt? By the way Little Cesar's is pretty good 😊
www.weaponprime.com/
😂How come what? At the end there, Ben asked "How Come..." and then nothing! Lol That's going to bother me forever... Or at least until I fall asleep. Or get distracted.
Finally, I've been waiting for this one. 🎉
I never ever understood Xorn …. And I still don’t LOL … another great episode
I really just hate any Bendis book that focuses on more than one character
Bendis really tries to juggle characters in New Avengers, only when Carol and Bob were mentioned as sometime Avengers did I realize wait shouldn't Ronin/Echo be in this book? She joined the team last volume but I don't see her in any of the panels. He seems to have a heavy hitter squad of Bob and Carol when he needs it but if a character can't do anything they just are not in the book today.
Is that the shirt I see on Google for 199 at the cheapest. Wow Sal said drip or drown
Love the rob explains shout out.
Not everyone can be like me and Michael. The only problem is forgetting which side you're on.
28:50 Minus the Bigotry I hope.
Yet another great episode! Love you all
Look the Secret Invasion show had a lot wrong with it, but revisiting stuff like this is a lot of people just like the Maria Hill in the MCU because Colbie Smulders played her
Um, actually North Pole, Alaska is a city that neighbors Fairbanks (puffs from inhaler)
I’ve been watching for roughly 10 years now… and 10 years ago I started University
How come…
Ultimate spider man and I love you guy keep it up
So funny story. The Neverending Story as a kid I also did not get what Bastian said, there was no subtitles either (I watched it in Cuba). But for whatever reason is very clear on DvD.
Please do Dark Avengers
I wonder what the Florida super hero team looked like in the 50 state initiative
But wasn't The Xorn Magneto retconned to have never been Magneto but John Sublime or something the whole time? Or am I misremembering that?
Hell yeah. I just read through Knightfall, so I'm 100% down for a redo. Let's-Go-Back Issues!
Ultimate spider man
"HOWCOME--"
Energy.
ITS NOT DNA LOL

To "Simplify"
Under the umbrella of Super Humans
*Mutents* are Born with X gene that gives them powers.
*Mutates* are born human and then have some Chemicals, Radiation, Cosmic Energy, or something else gives them powers.
The third category that blurs the line between the 2 is having one human parent and one alien parent, so they have powers through genetics, but not the x gene.
And to make everything more complicated Legally speaking,
Super-Human vs Super(Human)
Anyone that is beyond human capabilities, including aliens.
vs
A human who has transcended humanity, not including aliens.
And then there is the inhumans and the eternals and the deviants and the elders of universes who are all their own little thing. I like it though that marvel has such variety in its heroic capabilities or settings. Just wish they would actually play with it more but in a good way and with more creativity.
Okay guys I have to ask after civil war is there a series of books where the new avengers as secret avengers under Doctor strange and Luke Cage have books or tie ins I wonder I been trying to find those types of books featuring them
Dope shirt sal

Yiu guys should definitely redo civil war house of M and start dark avengers
Wasn’t there a retcon saying that that wasn’t the real Magneto pretending to be Xorn? But someone or something pretending to be Magneto pretending to be Xorn?
Are you asking or telling?
@@comicpop I assumed that having question marks would indicate that I was asking. I vaguely remember reading a scene where Magneto and Prof. X were talking, and Magneto was angry that people really thought that that was him. I want to say it was one of the 12+ X-Men comics right before House of M, but I don't remember which.
WHAT WAS THE SECOND THING?!
the post house of m era to the beginning of utopia, was / is the best era of x men for me.
I take it Krakoa hasn’t been your cup of tea, then? No judgements here if that’s the case - just curious.
@@halfmettlealchemist8076 i was liking it until inferno. that's the moment where i jumped ship.
@@johnthai6188 Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of comic-readers who stopped reading the X-books around that time; that’s when Hickman left, and he was the main architect behind the start of the Krakoan era, so it makes sense. I’ve been enjoying the books since his departure, though - mostly just Ewing and Gillen’s work, honestly.
@@halfmettlealchemist8076 when it comes to the x men book i'm reading at the moment, it's grant morrison's new x men. i've never read that run before and i'm enjoying it so far. i will say tho every time igor is on art for that book, his art is every inconsistent of quality.
