Important notes: Please do not send any hate towards Nikki or Dan Phillippi. This video is intended to be a critique of a real-life situation many pet owners can be faced with, as well as a learning resource for those who may be going through similar with their dogs. I felt it was important for me to go into this situation as unbiased as possible, and prior to filming and editing, I did not know of any pre-existing drama of any sort concerning the creators I am critiquing, or their treatment of their animals. BEFORE you choose to euthanize any pet due to behavioural (or suspected mental) issues, please do the following:
    1) Take your pet to the vet to check for any medical reason which would affect your dogs temperament.
    2) Consult with multiple trainers and behaviourists.
    3) If your dog is a specific breed, seek the guidance and assistance of a Breed Specific Rescue.
    Think critically. Be kind.
    xx
    Em

I think they are making a lot of excuses to make themselves look better, like Caesar says in the dog whisperer , its not the dogs fault, its the owner, they show no remorse or emotion when talking about bowser, The moment he said that he wanted to take the dog out like old yeller, makes me sick, I lost my cat and had to euthanize him I cry every time i think about it, I think after spending a decade with a dog and treating it like family they would be more broken up about it, there are a lot of rescues and foster homes that will take in a aggressive dog, where they train and analyze what triggers the dog,

From what I looked up. Their son basically annoyed the dog. I think the husband even said the son pulled on the dogs ear so much that the dog had cauliflower ear and had scarring. Damn this hits hard...my parents adopted a dog from an abusive home where the boyfriend of the woman would beat the dog so bad that he didn't trust anyone anymore. So when my parents brought him home all he would do was hide under the bed and would attack anyone who would come close. My mom had to work with him until he was able to trust people again. When they found out I was coming along, they got worried about how he would react to a baby. The difference is that my parents showed me how to touch the dog and not hurt him by accident and he never did anything to me. That dog got so attached to me that he never left my side. He was a really good boy.

I'm so glad your parents did such a good job.
We got a dog when I was little who kept biting people, we assume because of past trauma. She also kept escaping because she was a hound and wanted to hunt smells. My parents didn't know how to handle it. But we still didn't kill the dog. We brought it back to the shelter and they informed us they'd found a home with no kids, and a lot of space for the dog.
I know many people may not be able to find rehoming for a rough dog, but they seem to have a huge internet following. They could ask the public, ask a friend, etc.

Honestly. Baby gates exist. It would have been so easy to have them in separate rooms to ease a dogs anxiety and keep the child away safely. My mom instilled in us from birth to be gentle. Any time we were in contact with and animal the first thing she would say is “gentle” and if we weren’t we were removed from the situation. This is on the parents 100%. I got her into training and working with her and did the" shepherding." Also my son would get in big trouble and be separated from her if he tried to poke or even think of climbing on her. Now he knows not to do and teya loves him now while stopped mouthing him or trying to jump all over him. I hate it when parents let their child do to whatever to pets. I understand that kids come first. But this dog could’ve easily been rehomed. There’s no timeline in which a dog can be rehomed; you see senior dogs in shelters all the time that go on to be adopted for their final years.
I had to put my American Eskimo dog, Jango, to sleep in March. This hits so hard for me because i HAD to put him down because he was SICK and his quality of life was GONE. We had no other option, he didn’t have the option to live longer with me or with someone else... i guess I’m biased because my wounds are still fresh but this situation disgusts me because they did not explore all options, they just chose death for him..
Edit: I’d like to add that i understand he was an aggressive/reactive dog because of experiences when he was a puppy, but i really think Bowser could’ve found love in a home with someone who understands and knows how to live with aggressive/reactive dogs. There are a lot of people with that kind of experience who could’ve handled him and let him live the rest of his life.

I saw their video first and for me there is just no excuse. They had the dog for 9 years and the baby is not 8 years old so let that sink in first.
Dogs don't get aggressive over night, they also said it was not the first time, it has been an ongoing problem since the dog was young and never corrected the behaviour. The also said they contemplated the idea a few years back so again nothing new.
With their reach and amount of followers they have, there is no way nobody could take the dog, there are dogs beeing adopted at 10, 11 even 12 years old. Yes I know the aggression makes it difficult but is not imposible specially with the amount of reach out they have.
I'm also with you, the only reason an animal has yo be put down is if their life quality is compromised, so no you are not being biased, they failed their dog.
I'm sorry for your lost, you gave him an amazing life and made sure he was comfortable until his last breath

i feel like they knew about how they had a aggressive/reactive dog and then bringing a baby/toddler into the situation wasn't going to make it any better. even extremely well behaved dogs can snap at babies since the baby don't know what they are doing, especially if that dog has aggressive and reactive behaviour. they should of rehoused the dog to a suitable house with no small children or other dogs maybe with someone who has experienced having aggressive dogs in the past. this dog didn't deserve to die but it wasn't the right fit for this family. no hate on there decision i just think there was a better way "out" of this situation.

Think of the immense number of perfectly healthy dogs with no behavioural issues that are sitting in shelters waiting to be adopted. It is not at all unreasonable to say he is not an adoptable dog. I don't think they did everything right but I also think behavioural euthanasia can be the only course of action in some situations. I work in a vet clinic and I've seen a situation where rehoming the pet would be wildly irresponsible.

I agree with Mikaela, it is not the job of the HSUS to rehabilitate your dog that you did not bother to train. They do not have the resources for that kind of work and every day behaviorally good dogs end up being put to sleep due to lack of space. It is on the owners to have educated themselves, educated their dog, trained their dog and found solutions to the problems they have caused. They could have possibly worked with a smaller breed specific rescue to help try and rehome the dog or with a trainer/behaviorist who could have given more insight. Listening to these people they got a dog they didn't know a lot about, did not do training with, who did not fit in with their lifestyle.

Also, it seems to me that they were not ready for this dog 10 years ago in the first place. They let this behavior from the dogs trauma sort of fester over time and they got a breed of dog known to be extremely energetic and takes a ton of time and dedication to training. @@Alicia.Marie.13 The thing is, I did not hear, not even once, about them getting their dog professional help, and if they did, we do not know up to what degree of help did they try to provide their dog with. In one of their other videos, Nikki mentions how they stopped taking Bowser out for walks anymore. If thats the case, the dog had even more pent up energy and stress in him. If he was "too agressive," you can still take your dog out for walks or give it exercise while keeping everyone safe. Plus, the child, in this case, was the aggressor (although its not the child's fault either- the parents have to supervise, and teach your child manners too, as the child gets older as well) of course the dog is going to react in the way that it did. But instead, they chose to kill their dog. And they chose to kill their dog before their big move. (And they posted it on IG and UA-cam-money and views maybe? Sounds suspish, since they got sooooo many views after they posted this video. Im pretty sure that was going to happen...) How convenient. 🤥😐😑😤😤😤

Since I adopted her I have been very clear to my brother about the proper way to pet/hold her. If he’s being too rough I immediately take her away. Once he wanted to pet her but at this time she wasn’t trained and I warned against it. However he still touched her and she but him. Because of this he knows that when I tell him he shouldn’t pet her, it’s because he could scare her and get hurt. It saddens me that people don’t really teach their children about respecting their pets.

You can’t keep your eyes and focus glued on both a dog and a toddler at every second of every day. They DON'T understand that they shouldn't pull on an animal's tail or legs or ears. But the parents need to correct this behavior the SECOND it happens. I have 3 dogs, honestly they have all exhibited similar behavior, and I can't justify putting them down and ending their life over normal dog aggression. My daughter had to learn where NOT to touch the dogs and where NOT to go that is their territory. She's 9 now but since the age of 2 she has been bitten and has even bled as well as other family members even with behavior training they are impulsive and DOGS not humans and they snap with things that we would never assume would set them off. Especially as pack animals when ONE goes off the others join in and one of older dogs was injured at the time, recovering and she's a Shiba and can be agressive. She felt threatened while I was feeding our other dogs and she decided to attack my smallest dog and could have killed him. It seriously frightened us but now that she's healed we have not had any issues BUT we feed them in a crate now. So, we learned from that and we have muzzled trained.

So, here is my story about why I kinda hate it when people say "Oh, we had to put our dog down because he/she became agressive towards our toddler"
Years ago my aunt and uncle had a Schnauzer called Sargent Pepper, he was the sweetest, calmest, best boy ever. He was already an older dog (like around 10 or 12) and I spent a couple of weeks at their house, he (the dog) loved to curl up between my legs and have his head scratched, but he didn't run much or liked to be bothered too much because well he was old and not as active anymore. A couple months latter I found out my aunt and uncle had to put him down because he bit a kid (not their own but the same age and they were playing together). And I was SHOCKED, I couldn't believe he did that, he was so calm and nice, but I was like "If they thought it was the only choice, they must be right".
A while after I went to the same house and they had gotten their kid a Beagle puppy, and I watched him (their kid) and two other kids (one of them was the one who got bit) "playing" with the puppy. The poor little puppy kept crawling under the bed, shaking, trying to get away from the children and they would crawl chasing the dog, grab him by the leg and pull him out while the dog tried to hold on to the carpet and kept shaking. THAT IS WHY THAT KID GOT BIT: Not because the dog was agressive, but because this children thought dogs were toys and probably did something that hurt or scared the dog.

Even so, no matter how much he's comfortable with sitting in my lap, I always keep in mind at the back of my head that he is a bunny, and he may not like all of our interactions if forced. It breaks my heart to hear a child it bitten because his parents failed to teach him how to behave around their dog. To me, respect and understanding are the two utmost important things when owning any animal.
EDIT: But all things aside, you're looking gorgeous today Em.

I never had a dog in my life, but I learnt a lot. This video is so informative. There’s so much great information on what you can do to deal with difficult animals. I wish those two could have done something earlier. There’s so many chances that they missed. It’s sad.

they put down the dog they had for 10 years?? this is just a disgusting decision and an easy way out of a difficult situation... ive had one of my dogs for 2 months and i couldnt imagine doing sth like that... im crushed and ive never even heard about this doggie before. rest in peace Bowser !!

I admire Em being able to turn this story into an informative and educational video touching on these subjects.
there was plenty of other avenues to go down before they did what they did, sadly they failed on so many levels and in my eyes took the easiest way out of the situation.
there was so many things these people chose to put Bowser through, that basically had him set up to fail...
they dont deserve to have an animal or a child in my eyes.

This is 100% the parents fault. Honestly, what did they think would happen if the son was putting his hand in the dogs food. My mom had always taught me to not mess with a dog and theirfood. ESPECIALLY IF THE DOG IS KNOWN FOR BEING AGGRESSIVE

I agree with not taking puppies to parks. I made that mistake recently, I didn't know any better and my 3 month old puppy got Parvo virus. She's fine now, I thankfully caught it just as it was starting to attack her system, but please be careful!

Dog parks are problematic for dogs of all ages. Your dog is thrown in with a group of dogs you don’t know. I’ve found most owners do not pay attention to their dogs verbal queues or behaviors and there are just too many unknown potential things that can go wrong. It’s always better to have a select group of dogs you trust for your pup to interact with.

When we had kids, we fenced off a part of our living room for the animals. That is their space to eat and get away from toddlers. When they need a break, they ask to go back in, and no kids allowed in their space. It means no bites from dogs and no scratches from cats and everyone is happy. Give animals their space.

The fault falls on the pet industry and society for the stigma that reactive dogs need to be put down. They don't. Dogs are reactive due to conditioning or lack of socialization. Humans' oversights shouldn't lead to dogs' deaths

Kudos for bringing up spirit animal usage. I’m Nigerian, Irish, and Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) . I’m going to need people to start respecting my African American people and my indigenous people.
Dogs can have issues humans have too. Depression, anxiety, etc, but using the word bi polar on the other hand is not okay . Half the people who throw it around don’t even know the beginning of what having bi polar is for someone.

There are videos where they were basically throwing their much smaller dog into Bowser's face, which is probably why the smaller dog got stitched up a few times. And the guy constantly put his hands in his face while eating too. And they actually went on vacation before putting Bowser down, which was when their child was bit in the face. At least for a week.

i work as a veterinary technician and i agree with everything you have said thanks for the great video. i would also like to say that where i do not agree with the decision they made we should remember that everyone makes mistakes in their life, no one is perfect and they were given advice that lead them to this decision from the humane society. i work with people who have aggressive animals all the time and many have asked us for our advice on euthanasia verses other options and we try our best to point them to good resources to help but not all pet parents are receiving the same advice unfortunately.

Won't be able to sit through this simply because I can't support the actions of these people when they were very neglectful to being responsible dog owners and not correcting or supervising their child when he and the dog were in the same area but I will applaud you for being respectful to these people and encouraging others not to show hatred towards them. Bigger balls then I will ever have.

It's okay for people to be outraged, upset and all of those emotions as it is a very bad situation. There were alot of things that should have been done but that cannot be brought back, the thing that can be done now is education.

You are such a diplomatic and kind educator for animal care. These people should have been more responsible about teaching the kid how to interact with dogs. From the time my kids could move, I was teaching them respect for animals. My 11 year old chihuahua got very sick suddenly and we had to have her put to sleep on Easter of this year. It was devastating and we are still grieving her loss. I would never make the decision to euthanize a healthy animal because I feel like there is always another solution. Just because the animal isn't right for your situation doesn't mean they aren't someone else's perfect companion.

I have a taco chihuahua/rat terrier mix & when he was a puppy I didn't want him to be food aggressive either bc chihuahuas already have a bad rep lol so id take his food from him while he was eating, invade his space, pet him, put a finger in his bowl. Anything I could think of. He's 10 this year, & his only issue is he's scared of big dogs *duh* & he's wary of strangers but doesn't bite & anyone can take his food. 🥰🥰🥰 my brother recently got a chihuahua puppy, which is really rowdy so my dog would discipline him & still does, when the puppy gets too much. But they love each other for sure 😂❤

We did the same with my dog. She can easily bite through a cows bone, when she gets one.
But we always showed her, that we are allowed to take her food whenever we want.
Also, I teached her that she's taking treats carefully out of your hand, even if you hold it at her, because I have a 5 year old niece, who will run around the house with snacks in her hand.
And for my dogs own safety, we teached her, even if we throw food infront of her, she's only going to eat or take it if we allow it (in case something unhealthy falls to the ground, like chocolate or you come across those poison-meatballs, yk?)

I'm glad you made this video, I definitely have what I think is a better perspective on the situation vs some other videos I've watched. You make a lot of good points about proper training and dealing with dogs. at 16:38, we have a large crate that's set up in the house on occasion for when were dog sitting my grams dogs, but my 3 boys love it. The door is left open unless they (my grams dogs) are being put away if we're leaving the house and literally my boxer, chihuahua, and Yorkie will pile in together. The crate is about as tall as the boxer is standing since we mostly use it for the smaller dogs.
