    Imagine knowing your cat might fall into water and panic, and instead of preventing it, you whip out a camera to film it, and don't help them.. Some people are idiots. Nothing ruins a "Cute funny animals" compilation video for me quicker than clips of cats panicking in water. :(

      My pets love investigating water when someone is in it (ie, baths and showers or pools) but i always make sure i'm around to make sure they dont panic. If I'm in the shower my cat likes to hop in if i sit down in the tub and he will stand on my legs so his paws don't get wet, its super funny tbh, and then i always make sure the glass door is open enough for him to hop right out when he's had enough. my dog however likes to bite at the water and push me around in the shower but being wet isn't her favorite thing so while i 100% video her im also always ready to just throw my phone down to help her.

    The firefly process is done before the nerve system is fully developed i believe. The firefly process was developed by a biologist who initially was researching privately and he saw the market for it in the trade. I dont know the survival rate but it isn't intended to hurt the animals involved!
    Please note that im not an expert on this. I simply did a report on Axolotls a year ago and fell into the rabbit hole of researching Fireflies.

      Now KloudNine Axolotls makes them too! It is done SO early in the embryonic stage that there is def no pain felt. These are, in fact, the only two people to do them and it’s mainly done to research the science behind them. Coming into the pet trade is just a bit extra.

      @The Penguin /Panda Lord Axolotls are only endangered in the WILD. They're one of the most commonly bred amphibians, so pet Axolotls (like the one in the video) are very much not endangered (in fact one could say the captive population is thriving) . Likely the Axolotl in the video was bred from domestic axolotls so the whole "axolotls are endangered!!" thing doesn't even apply here.

      What's in a name I’m not sure about the success rates of things, but that could potentially be why the rates of success are theoretically low. That’s IF they are low however. That’s a very good point. The woman in the clip mentioned that the tail was from a sibling, so maybe scientists use siblings because it’s theoretically a better match? It’d be very interesting to see some actual statistics on the survival rates for the spliced embryos.

    • @Emzotic

    • @ericahealey2559
      @ericahealey2559 4 роки тому

      What's in a name I come back with research! “Axolotls' extraordinary immune system, which accepts cells from other genetic lines without rejection, and ability to heal without scarring makes this possible.” So there’s little to no risk of rejection, HOWEVER another source says that the scientists who do this procedure cite a success rate of less than 2% so it’s still very dangerous.

    • @logankimball8036
      @logankimball8036 4 роки тому +18

      Fireflies have almost a 100% success rate. The original procedure was done to track acceptance of transplants due to their abundance of stem cells. Also, chimeras are not possible in amphibians due to the structure of the egg. What you see is a perfect split mosaic (modaicism is when two or more phenotypes are displayed) . Strohls Herptiles is the biologist behind the firefly procedure. He has many papers noting the valuable research provided by this procedure and instead of culling the animals once done, he sold them off in the pet trade to live out their lives. The scientist now behind the new set of "lightning bugs" (her trademark ) is doing similar research. Strohl also has a great paper explaining as to why chimera is not possible in amphibians. I highly recommend you reach out to him for more info about these animals.

    The firefly axolotl was originally a project made by a professor who was studying them. He made 50 examples to observe if switching their tails in the embryo would work correctly and in general to see how their cells would react. This was actually for the purpose of potentially saving the wild endangered species. Axolotls regrow majority of their body but never 'perfectly' like the original parts (when I adopted mine she was missing a whole front arm, now grown with an extra finger and a swollen 'bicep'). Some axolotls will regrow defective tails that outside of aquarium life could put them in a lot of danger. This project was to see if they could help the wild population gain in number by saving the vulnerable ones using our captive bred axolotls as donors. All the embryos survived into adulthood and were adopted out once the project was done. While it may seem really cruel, scientists would do anything to save the native species and if that means sacrificing captive bred axolotls (which breed way too easily even in unexperienced hands and we create much higher survival rates of the embryos that most could even find homes for) then they are willing to do it because once the native species goes extinct there's no going back. So although the ethics of the original project were questionable, I can somewhat understand it. The breeders now that are creating them for simple aesthetics are unethical end of and are only doing it for profit.

    • @Eneby00
      @Eneby00 4 роки тому

      The reason why they are 'firefly' is because different coloured tails were much easier to observe. He also didn't want to cut up adult, live axolotls hence his project relied on the embryo state which is believed to lack major nerve development resulting in the axolotl not feeling any pain during the process.

    So with the fire fly it is a 98% success rate the reason you don’t see a lot of them is because it is not a common or easy thing for people to be able to do but it is before they have pain receptors so they don’t feel it and will not be effected by it during there life time

Found out about what slow loris went through, not long after and hated it. Im frm Singapore, all exotic pets are banned. Only dogs, cats, rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs. hamsters, certain breeds of birds, red sided terrapins are allowed to be kept as pet. So i really enjoy informative animals videos like yours, since i would most likely never be able to see such animals upclose in person

      Hey! This is a canned response so I can get this out to everyone who is commenting along these lines. I do not have an issue with StressInABox. She clearly takes great care of her aquatics. This is why I left in her voice over in the video. She explains well that she didn’t create the fireflies. You’ll notice her audio is the only original clip audio I left in the video because she explains her involvement (or lack thereof) in the creation of the firefly. My issue lies entirely with the procedure itself, because it’s completely unnecessary and done for aesthetic purposes.

Make sure the humidity is around 40-50 percent and once you see the snake is about to shed, bump it up to 60-70. Make sure to lower it back down after the snake is done shedding. Just a reminder that I’m not a reptile expert, I’m just a fellow ball python owner and this has worked really well for me. Hope it works out!

    I don't know why people are automatically assuming you're throwing shade at StressInABox or that you hate her just because you don't like what was done to her axolotl even though she had no involvement with the procedure. Just because she didn't ask for the modification to be done doesn't mean it's okay for "Firefly" axolotls to be produced. Even besides the fact that it's unnecessary and harmful, it's also not even that "aesthetically pleasing" of a modification anyway tbh, it looks weird.

      Ariann it’s not done for aesthetics. It’s a research project done by literally two labs. They’re trying to study the regeneration of axolotls and it’s implications for other regenerations. Please do the barest amount of research before completely demonizing what could be a very important study. The animals are only sold as pets after they’re done being studied because the alternative is to cull the animals. The procedure is painless and has a near 100% success rate as well.

    I’m glad to see people explaining the reality of the Firefly axolotls. As soon as I saw the video I guessed that this was early embryonic manipulation, as that is incredibly common in research and education (actually I’ve manipulated a few embryos myself during my college studies). Things like that Tiktok and, unfortunately, this video by extension, make the unfortunate mistake of misrepresenting the process, and I get why. Most people don’t know that pigmentation is literally one of the very first things that happen in embryo development, so a process that looks like “cutting off tails” is actually just the movement of a few cells in most cases, well before any ability to feel pain has developed. As for it being “unnatural”, I can’t really say I see that as a bad thing. Lots of unnatural things are unfairly demonized (GMOs, anyone?) and I just don’t want to partake in the fear mongering. If I were going to point to a legitimate concern it would be copycats, people with no background in embryonic research and shoddy insufficient setups wanting to slapdash scramble some embryos just to make a quick buck off a potential budding fad. That’s something I would genuinely be worried about, because while I trust scientists immensely, I don’t trust mill breeders as far as I could throw them.

    • @morristhecat69

      @@alexiasimoes3762 Oh, I remember reading about that! So, the chimp, Travis (age 14) was an animal actor owned by Sandra Herold. Other than a couple shenanigans incidents, he'd been well known around town and well liked. Travis had been treated like a son. He could dress himself, drive a car, and use a computer. The chimp was a celebrity. Earlier that day, Travis had been rambunctious and used a key to get outside, so Sandra called up Charla Nash, a good friend to her and Travis, to help wrangle the chimp back indoors. As soon as Travis saw her, he went BALLISTIC. Sandra, having tried and failed to get Travis off Charla with a shovel and then a chef's knife, holed-up in her car and frantically called the police. Police arrive and Travis charges them, opening the car door to attack the cop. After several shots, Travis retreats. Charla, horribly mutilated but still alive, is rushed to the hospital. She lost both hands, her entire face, and had significant damage to her skull and brain. Later, Travis is found dead in Sandra's house, near his room.
      So, what happened? They don't know, for sure, but there are some possible factors. 1). Charla's new haircut dramatically changed her appearance. Maybe Travis thought she was a stranger. 2). Charla was holding his beloved Tickle-Me-Elbow doll. 3). Travis had Lyme disease, which does have disorientation and dramatic mood swings as symptoms. 4). Earlier that day, Sandra had given Travis tea laced with Xanax (which he wasn't prescribed for) to help him calm down. Xanax can WORSEN aggression and anxiety in people who are already in an agitated state. In animals, this unpredictability can lead to tragedy.
      PSA: Hey, don't give animals (or people) medication that hasn't been prescribed by their doctor. Also, wild animals are not and never will be safe to keep as pets.

It’s because only two people in the entire world make them; Strohl’s Herptiles and KloudNine Axolotls. Both of which have slowed done their research significantly due to health reasons. Also the process is done EXTREAMLY early in the embryonic stage, not while they’re already developed beings. So there’s absolutely no pain felt! It is done as research to see if embryonic transplants can be done and how successful they can be. Ones coming into the pet trade is just a little side product!

      @@Emzotic Sometimes I wonder if it could also be beneficial to have their toxins on their skin too. Even if they can’t get a bite in, they raise their arms out for defense. If they were to get attacked, I imagine the predator would still get the toxins into its system by biting or fighting the loris. It could also just happened to be that the loris evolved to produce venom from a specific kind of oil or sweat gland that was already there with another function.
      It’s interesting to remember how evolution doesn’t always change species to become the most efficient versions of themselves, but often only keeps around “what apparently works right now”

The problem is that the video you showed was an educational informative video posted by an ethical and well educated Axlotle breeder: and you failed to mention this information within your own video. Because we are human and do not always do our research or take in the full contents, some of your followers who do not know her work may assume that you are making the statement that she follows unethical practices, and may find her and attack her, and that's not fair to her. Apologies if I am incorrect but I thought the firefly (also called lightning bug) axolotl are so rare because only 2 people in the world create them and I also believe that they were created to begin with by scientists to see if transplants would affect the animal and their regeneration abilities and if the lotls would be able to use that limb like it was theirs originally. So if humans were able to develop some sort of regenerative abilities would receiving transplants do more harm than good?
    The fireflies were made for scientific research and they came out without any harmful or health damaging consequences but people don’t like them but yet most of these people will more than gladly support animals that were made for fashion that have many health problem such as the pug...

    So, I'd first off like to say, great video, glad you covered these topics, I too was upset by the Hedgehog video. Now, if you don't know this, the person showing off the Firefly Axolotle explains why there aren't many Firefly Axolotles. It has little to do with their sucess rate, it mainly has to do with the fact that splicing tails takes time and effort, some breeders just don't want to do it. It's also a fairly new thing, so it hasn't spread that much around they're community. Now, I know that there is also the "does it hurt" question, and the answer is, no. The breeders who do this only do so when it is in their first stages of devolpment, and when their nerves haven't devloped yet or are not fully devolped. This means they do not feel the splicing happen.
