Part 2: • Kurt Cobain - Studio v...
His voice was so perfect for *screaming*
lol
Yes true rockers..💪💪💪
it came so naturally to him. he didn’t have to try to sound like that like alot of people do... he just did
Agree👍
@@willmcbay3689 fuck it's bad for ur voice lol
Kurt is a true rocker
@@sarajankovicova8595 there is no best

@@lewisx6868 there is no way to measure such a thing its all preference
Not hardly lol that is not rock and roll that's headbanging metal. Major freaking difference.
@@gammarose3758 it’s grunge dumbass
Biggest difference is the live screams aren't double tracked.
Stefan Bengtsson I can’t recall which exactly, but some are double tracked. I know for a fact that some of the screams in “You know you’re right” are doubled
All screams on Nevermind and onwards are double tracked, none of the live ones are.
all EVERYTHING on Nevermind was multi-tracked lol
No shit
MTV Live and Loud - "Drain you" best scream ever!
The "live on nulle" or w.e in 94 and they all have suits on is a close tie for drain you scream. Give it a listen it's also one of the few moments Kurt only sings
Fuck yeah brother!!!!
I like the 1994 France one
Dominic Hilton didn’t he die 93
@@dominichilton9651 I think that scream is terrible. Listen to the last one in paper cuts that's the best scream ever
I don’t think there will will ever be another person who can scream like Kurt Cobain. R.I.P. Kurt D. Cobain
Full name if asking
Kurt Donald Cobain
The big difference is the layers of voice vs Kurt on his own. RIP the legend.
He was great live performer and vocalist. Such a legendary dude! He got it all.. the look, voice, lyrics, attitude, style and taste of music. Born to be star kinda guy.
Yeah, and it all got him murdered. Cruel world, indeed.
didnt he kill himself?
I don't know about been a great vocalist. He was really bad. If u ask any vocal coach they will tell you that if he was alive today he would not be singing anymore
depends on what kind of genre you are talking about. not everyone sings ballad or rnb.
Su Amigo El Ilegal - Kurt Cobain was legendary. His MTV unplugged was excellent and a good demonstration of his vocal capabilities. I believe Kurt was the Woody Guthrie and John Lennon of our time. If he were a bad singer, he wouldn't have reached cult status while altering the direction of music.
The reason why the studio versions sound fuller is because a lot of the time they multi-tracked the screams so there's several layered on top of each other, making them sound more dense.
Nevermind was double as well as 2 more over there a little diffrent from diffrent take. Butch Vig had to tell Kurt,Lennon always did it to get him to do other takes😁
of course not bleach tho lmao
“I’d rather be hated for who I am than for who I am not”
That’s what I live by
Bullseyetube love the hate
"id rather be hated for who i am rather than be loved for who i am not" u mean
I think that quote is overrated but
One of the greatest vocalist of all time. So much energy from a small guy that sounds laid back as hell when he just talked in interviews.
Kurts voice is so fucking raw live its just sick such a tiny man had so much voice in him.
I like the live performances better. They sound way more grungy and authentic.
damn you actually picked some of the best performances for each song. nice man. only a true fan could have done this.
You're welcome
So glad I grew up during this time! This was REAL music in the days before auto tune. Everything is real and raw....just perfect, at least for me. I saw them live in Reading in 1992 when I was 18 and it is STILL the absolute best concert I have ever attended.
Thank you for this....I miss Kurt so much.
Great time to grow up!
U are lucky bastard! I wasn't even alive when he died!
Kurt's live performances sound so much better! And full of energy!!
Influenced me to be a musician

Jup me too. Watched 'Live and loud' for the first time when I was a kid, it changed my life.
Me too :)
Holy Crap....so much better live!!! Kurt was amazing at screaming in tune
My fascination with this guy and his band just continues. He wasn’t really a “good” singer, but he was somehow still a GREAT vocalist. The big thing that sets Kurt apart from the majority of other singers-even singers of a similar style-is that he was SO effective at conveying a message of substantial emotional gravity with very few actual tools or resources. And he didn’t give a fuck. Like listening to Milk It or Territorial Pissings, he was entirely prepared to shred his throat for the sake of the song, and it all somehow sounds so genuine. Fascinating artist.
Lincoln Santana im gonna miss him forever he gone to soon =(
Im not dead
This video reminds you of how great they were and how awesome his ear for melody was
Live scream is better (in my opinion).
Great video!
Allek Macready congratulations you have won
Allek Macready agree 100%
Live is always better. Kurt's voice was amazing live. I go back and watch all the old concerts. He was such a great performer without trying.
Allek Macready ...one of the best live performer
oof good thing you clarified it's your opinion
he screams louder live than in a studio no way what a discovery
Dave fucking up those drums
Kurt had the truth with him... how to capture that in the studio... how to have that at all? How did he get it? How does one get it? So much mystery! That makes Kurt Cobain one of the best.
A mixture of naturally ability and discipline/technique.
Missed some really good ones like Drain You and the actual scream on School. The thing about Cobain was his voice was SO good that sound engineers didn't know what to do with him in the studio. They should have just let him sing live and left it alone but they must have felt they were in a studio and so they simply had to do something with the vocals. In reality they should have just left them alone. His live vocals were so much better than anything ever recorded in the studio with possibly the exception of Milk It and Tourette's, maybe. Even that's a toss up. Tourette's was so intense I don't recall if it was ever played live. If it was it was a very rare performance. The vocals on that song would kill most singers.
Tourettes was played live at Readings in 92
There is a live recording of tourette in from the muddy banks of the wishkah
There's a live version on this video at 2:05... Also, your comments about engineers not knowing what do with Kurt's vocals is completely baseless. You may prefer the energy of his live vocals, but there's nothing about his voice that makes him any harder to record than any other singer. Butch Vig had Kurt double track most of his parts for Nevermind, but that's a common stylistic choice that lots of artists use. You may not like it, but it's not "wrong". In Utero is much closer to how the band sounds live because they made the decision to work with Steve Albini who is known for his minimalist approach to recording. Very few overdubs and a restrained approach to post-production makes the product sound more raw.
I agree with reverb haha, don't shit on butch vig lol
Steve Albini basically recorded Kurt live in a big resonant room at Pachyderm, for the In Utero sessions. Steve was interviewed about the sessions by Michael Azerrad for the _Come As You Are_ bio, and (I don't have the book in front of me, so I'll have to paraphrase) he said something to the effect that "most major label rock/pop records use a ton of effects on the vocals in an attempt to make them sound 'special', but I just record the sound of the singer's voice in an acoustically resonant room, which is so different from how everyone else does it that it sounds like a special effect."
For the 20th anniversary re-release of In Utero in 2013, Steve included a new mix that features even rawer vocals than what wound up on the original '93 album. It almost sounds like you're in the room with Kurt while he's singing in the shower, or something like that. Worth a listen for any Nirvana fan.
Kurt cobain had a monster shriek live , but if he wasn’t in the mood to perform for any reason he would destroy his vocals with off keys and purposely bad guitar playing so you kinda gotta be selective during live
I dont think it was that often though.... they really wanted to put on a good show everytime. All the times ive seen him destroy the songs there have been pretty good reasons for it.
Thank u
@@kurtcobain74 hey Kurt, how you doing 👋?

FerchoDelgaRams 2907 Paris 1994 is amazing
Nulle part allures in 1994 is his best drain you scream, also one of the only times he's on stage without a guitar.
Best live scream for Milk It was at the Stabler Arena, the same performance where the mic shocked him and the feedback hurt his ears. It also wins the funniest performance award for that song, too.
Nirvana is Nirvana because of their shows... pure energy
AUTOTUNE
Hah, NOT!!!
SmokeyCRO excuse me sir, nirvana did not use autotune. Cough cough
SmokeyCRO they didn't even have that then...
Good musicians don’t need Autotone
Almost call the 911 until i read more info lol
Lol hahah, Kurt was the one i really know don't ever use autotune
Love the concept of this video. Miss Nirvana.
Kurt had a great singing voice and could scream quite well. The band in the studio could bring the fucking house down at high volumes the band live was a different monster just totally mind blowing.
Best band in world
yeah but ilike smashing

The '92 MTV Awards gig is my favorite live performance of Lithium. I watched it when it first aired and still enjoy re-watching it every now and again, two-and-a-half decades later. Actually, now that I think about it, pretty much every live performance that Nirvana did for MTV was particularly good. For all of the complaining that Kurt did about the fame and "the mainstream music business", I think that deep down he knew that the MTV shows were a big deal and he didn't want to fuck them up. And it shows, because he brought his A game for those gigs. At least that's how I feel.
Mine too!
Yeah man! I think you're right. We wouldn't currently have the great UNPLUGGED show if Kurt had declined the invitations by MTV. Who the fuck cares about "being mainstream"? I think the most important thing in music is being and expressing yourself in songs to get fans and build a legacy.
Live in Rome1991 what a vocal
yeah
Best scream: 'i just want to sleep'
kvd tube that song doesnt sing Kurt. It is song from "Nill- Insomnia"
He was awesome..!!
That great feeling when u realize u know all these songs
I love how Territorial Pissings is almost exactly the same
So shy but so loud
The best Kurt scream is in the Aneurysm demo near the end.
You forgot the Hairspray Queen vocal
You won't see it on a live video, cos it so focking rare.
Lmao, probably because kurt tried playing it live and then realized, "What the fuck, I can't play this and sing it, how did I even write this??" @@tigasandy
he sounds great either way
THE PHOTO IN STUDIO COOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
✨He was LOUD AND PROUD🤟✨
kurts screaming gives me life
Great video, thanks
Kurt has the best scream..ever!!!.....of the chain rocker!!!!!...powerful!!
At least he really sang, without any help of computer and other stuff that could have helped him. He deserves to be respectful just because of that. Video is quite good, but is missing some of the best live performances such as drain you..
Thats because they didnt have that back then
Live any day!! I love the rawness of his vocals ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing live singer sounds even more amazing when professional sound engineers have recorded a dozen takes of the same song through different high quality mics in a sonically perfect room and then used their skills to smooth out the inevitable rough spots to make amazing perfect. In other news water is still wet.
live wins
I just think that live performances hits different
Jis voice is greatt😍😍😍
LEGEND !
thanks for this
I like his voice most live because their easier to simular my voice to his high notes and rasp . Sry for bad english
The Subculture I'm glad he killed himself

Thanks, man! I appreciate it!
Great video
Such an amazing singer
SUPER , GRACIAS 💗💗💗💗 BEST LIVE 😎😇😎
who ever made this thank you
You're welcome
In my opinion, Cobain’s vocals are best showcased on School. Not the live version though, studio.
How can you sing like this without destroying your throat :OO
@@quasar1 or just smoke a lot😂😂😂
He somehow developed a technic. You can see that he wasn´t destroying it so much, because he could talk normaly after the concert. When you scream the wrong way for more than one hour, you lose your voice.. He didn´t show any sign of hoarseness
@@lfmr180 he allegedly used to cough blood after the shows though
@@Rellusionist because of his severe stomach problems.
his throat was fine. I've seen many singers who at the end of the show struggled to speak. I've never seen Kurt hoarse. He walked offstage and spoke to reporters with his voice intact. I also thought it was impressive.
Quality sound!
Even though I love a lot of Nirvana's live performances, Kurt's studio vocals (especially his screams) were almost always superior to the live versions. When he loses his shit and his voice falls to pieces on the album versions of Territorial Pissings, Negative Creep, Stay Away, or Scentless Apprentice, for example --- he never really recreated that level of voice-shredding intensity live. At least not that I've heard. And it makes sense -- he wouldn't be able to keep touring and playing shows night after night if he pushed his voice that hard every time. So I think he simply HAD to hold back a little bit during the live shows. And, even in holding back, he still pushed his voice way harder than he probably should have, lol.
TestMeatDollSteak everything was double or triple tracked on the album so it sounded a lot "stronger"
Josh .W -- Not so much for Bleach, definitely for Nevermind, and a little bit for In Utero, yeah, but I think my point is still valid. There's a reason why Kurt never duplicated the screams after the second verse of Negative Creep during live shows, and it's the same reason he didn't duplicate the hysterical screams during the chorus of live versions of Scentless Apprentice, or the vocal blow out at the end of Territorial Pissings. He had to preserve his voice to some extent.
In fairness he did blow out his voice every other song while recording, even when he took it easy (relatively) live he still damaged his voice permanently after the Nevermind tours
There is a way to pretend to push your voice without actually doing it. I believe Cobain had that ability, and this is only based on the fact that he was never sharp or flat. If you have a tendency to actually shout, quite literally to the extremes of your volume dynamics, you are likely to go sharp (overshoot the pitch of the note). If you tend to undersing (don't support enough), there is a strong possibility that you will go flat (undershoot the pitch of the note).
If Kurt could control his voice as well as I think he could (especially considering how heavily he modified his vowels to the best possible resonant strategies for his physiology), then it stands to reason why he could do this night after night and make it through a whole tour. From all these recording snippets, it sounds like he was singing clean but distorting with the false folds by either increasing breath flow against the strength of his solar plexus, or twanging his voice so hard that the false folds got involved. Hard to say for sure, but a good clue is the fact that his most distorted tones sounded like someone yelling through a megaphone into a subway fan. That is to say, you can not hear a heavily affected twang in his voice. The opposite extreme would be BIlly Corgan, where- even when he's singing with distortion- he still sounds like an angry bee in a tin toilet.
litihium is a good excample.
On the last "there in my head" he does something with his voice... idk... something really beautiful.
