I think the Snowboulder should get bigger over time until it finally explodes at the end stunning all the players you picked up as well as players directly next to the explosion
Yas
most definitely
If you go the route of making it have an impact on other players as big as this, you definitely want to find a way to balance it out for the player using it. This could quickly become super OP and kind of make the game feel cheap in terms of fairness, but I love the direction of "big chaos moments" it offers.
@@Cratonymous It makes me think of Bullet Bills in the newer Mario Kart games, so I feel like it should be balanced accordingly (e.g. only award it rarely to the folks at the back of the pack).
To balance it it could just be hard to control especially around corners making you fall off easily
adding a trail which is left behind where you skid would be a nice detail
he said he wanna do that
Already looks more fun than most new AAA games
One example is Epic's Mega Grants. We're at the beginning of the next big, and greatest phase of game development I believe.
This looks absolutely amazing so far, i love the direction you are going with this man. Keep up the good work!
A suggestion I have is to include a first person camera (maybe it can be as part of a 'zen' gamemode), because that last clip of first person skiing looked so cool and oddly calming.
That’s a fun idea. I liked using first person in MK3DS.
Placing Ramps/Kickers behind you to throw players off course! (Or in front of you, to make cool jumps and get some kind of speed boost)
Just having ramping off sections in general
You should add an option where you can make the camera just behind the player like most 3rd person games are and with multiplayer you could split it into a lot of screens like Mario kart
I think a stubby tron style trail behind the player would be a cool item to get. You could trip your friend with good skiing
Nice seeing more stylized games made in unreal rather then the typical realistic look that you normally see (in unreal) the game also looks super fun
Agree. I think there is a very real temptation to create ultra realistic things in Unreal because it looks so good. But it's also a great engine for more stylized graphics if you do it right!
Yes camera relative controls are much simpler. That's what I went with before I started. I love those ragdoll physics when they fall though 🤣🤣. A snowy dust trail would also be dope as an ability.
Maybe the slalom checkpoints can be a risk-reward mechanic, where you get a speed boost if you thread the needle but you need to be precise and can potentially bump into the flags.
I have a few Ideas that might help: First person mode, speed boost, the ability to hit players with the Ski Poles and in the level side, add areas where it's easier to fall from a cliff. Your progress amazes me, and I really hope to see your project finished. Keep up the good work!
I really like the idea of being able to hit other players with ski poles. Kind of reminds of riding on a motorcycle in GTA V and being able to swing at and hit other players making them fall off their own motorcycle. I could see a lot of funny interactions with that
Suggestion: maybe the snowball should get bigger over time but start out small. That would make more sense
Yes
This is looking really amazing!
You could make a “banana” item from Mario Kart and make it look like a Snow Man or Block of Ice.
For the “Bullet Bill” item you could make the player turn into a sled or toboggan (this would be simple since the player will just follow the AI path for a short while) bonking anyone in the way.
For the “Fireflower” item you can make the player just shoot a bunch of short ranged snowballs as fast as they mash the buttons.
Maybe you could add a Hot Chocolate / Coffe item to act as the “Mushroom” boost item.
As a little reward for good Skiing it would be cool if you get a tiny boost for every pair of flags you pass.
Maybe just add a static model to the snowball of a pair of legs with skiis sticking out, whenever a player is attached. Like in cartoons.
Hey there! As some reference materials for this exact genre, I would look at Snowboard Kids (1 and especially 2 since it's even further expanded on and done well) for N64.
Largely based on Mario Kart systems/designs, it was developed to be a "snowboarding themed Mario Kart", essentially achieving your exact vision.. items and everything.
The design for achieving racing laps on a mountain by using a lift to go back to the top for the next lap, etc. was a cool design and solution to see!
Some ability suggestions
Powdered Snow - Leaves a trail of snow behind the player that blinds the players caught in it (vaguely like the squid in mario kart)
Avalanche - A mound of snow is sent down the mountain side, taking out any players it hits, and leaving behind a trail of 'loose' snow, that slows the players for a few seconds
Ice Cubes - Pretty much just a snowy themed banana from mario kart
Potential items:
Really hot chocolate - makes you go faster, and melts the snow behind you so players go slower
Some sort of blizzard that reduces visibility for other players
Not a power up, but having ski jump shortcuts in the course - maybe hidden by snowdrifts you have to plow through?
Blizzard is one that I'm planning on, great minds think alike! Also hot chocolate is really fun and that could be just a unique way to have a boost ability. Feel free to drop that idea in the discord I quite like it 👍
Your progress is so fast! Insane to imagine you only started out 2 months ago.
About the boulder picking up players, I would make a "pancaked" model for each character, with very little thickness, or even 2D. When the boulder runs over a character you can switch the normal model for the pancake model, and stick it around the boulder.
Cool ideas!
Landmine equivalent: Maybe a shovel powerup that upon use instantly creates a small hole behind the players position that opponents can fall into
they should be gnomes sticking out of the ground
Alternative, the "landmine" could be putting a skiing pole into the ground
Feedback: Consider adding rows of strings and tiny brightly colored flags across the path boundaries, and include mini brightly colored huts/houses along the way (later in development). This will really provide much needed color in this game. looks great so far!
power up ideas:
- moose antlers that knock over nearby players or you could transform into a polar bear
- ice storm causes icicles to fall in the path of enemy players, easy to doge if you're by yourself but if there's bunched up players it'd be challenging
- ice drill allows you to tunnel underground for a few seconds, protects you from attacks and allows you to cross rough terrain
- blizzard adds a layer of powdered snow to the whole map, anyone skiing through powder has a tough time turning and moves a little slower, helps players near last place and rewards anyone with precise steering
- slingscarf grabs any nearby player ahead of you, launches you forward and slows them down
game looks great! best of luck!
I'm loving the artstyle. It has pretty minimalistic vibes, but also has nice depth. I never made 3D games before, but after my current project I was thinking of giving it a go in Godot 4.0.
Only 2 devlogs in, and already looking like a fun game to play around with. keep up the great work!
I would suggest a snowmobile but the snowboulder fills that niche, maybe a snowcone/ icicle lolly that gives the player a boost forwards
I know it would be a LOT of work, but the boulder HAS to pick up players with rag doll physics. It would make it 100x better. And it should get bigger as it picks up more snow.
ALSO ALSO, you need better tracks behind the player as it goes down the slope.
You should make a snowmobile, which comes up the mountain as an attack, something called “safety first”
An it that spawns snowboarders. Ones sitting in the middle of the run, ones going across the run but change direction whenever you try to avoid them, ones that come falling out of the sky near you...
I need this game in my life! Another game to stoke the flames of hate between my friends!
Great video! You put a lot of care into these devlogs and they're fun to watch!
I think a nice idea to sort of mimic mario kart would be to have a rescue helicopter bring the player back if they fall off.
Something like Lakitu that picks you up and puts you back on the course? I agree
I am loving the videos! Great job on everything! 💪💪
This is incredible! Really enjoying this series so far!
Here are some ideas in no particular order:
1. A pool of sand that reduce speed when hit, like the pool of oil in Mario Kart.
2. The monster from SkiFree game that hunts down the player in 1st position, like the blue shell in Mario Kart.
3. Throwing snowballs at people, like using the green shells in Mario Kart.
4. Drop down a snowman behind that stop players, penguins in their path. Something like the fake item box in Mario Kart.
Great video, and cool game! I wish you luck on the rest of development! 👍
This honestly sounds like a very fun game, and the devlog is going really well so far. Keep it up!
8:40 oop-
team rocket blasting off againn!!
Love the devblog! I am a fan :)
Great video. Your editing is on point. You are clearly an influence for my future videos. Keep making devlogs!! :D
These are really cool and insightful videos! Keep em coming! :)
You said something about adding flags to keep yourself interested. Think there is an opportunity to give a player a speed bonus for stringing a couple of those together somehow. Or have certain flags give you an item or something along those lines. Feels like a natural place to make some good gameplay.
Totally, trying to figure out the best way to distribute items and if flags should be involved in that. Like you said they could be used to give a speed boost instead that might make more sense. Will test this out!
@@solomon-gumball maybe giving a speed boost or item after stringing a couple together? or different colored flags granting different kind of power ups? regardless this looks very promising and i wish you the best of luck! hoping i'll get to try out this game! it looks fun!
this is so sick , cant wait to see this become more finished
Keep it up man! These are fantastic. Inspiring me to keep pushing forward on my own work.
Awesome ideas, implementation and video. Congrats!!!
Always love finding new small devlogs! So excited for more videos!
really fun and enjoyable video! Good luck with the dev, it's looks really cool ;)
Right on man! Awesome devlog, can’t wait for more. The game is shaping up great!
Yes that penguin idea was fire!
Subbed looking nice!
Very thought out dev log. Cool to see all the steps for the 3D environment. I love extreme sports/racing games like this. Reminds me of that Olympic Game w/ Mario and Sonic.
Wow... huge progress since last devlog! It's already looks fun to play :)
Great informative content here too. Glad I found this channel!
Heey i really like this series, and as a fellow game develepor i love how you reimplement ideas from other games, i had a fun idea that could work with your game. Something like a map hazard, every game start it would choose a hazard like strong wind(makes ski harder to control), snowstorm(limits visibility) or ice spikes(from the first dev log, it could spawn them randomly on the spline). This would make every game a little different then the last.
Just keep the good work going, this game will be so fun!!!
"Hazards" are definitely in the queue. Once I flesh out the first couple maps more I'd love to dive into this
Just discovered this channel and i love it! They Game logos amazing and You just got started, can't wait for next vídeo!
Great video and game looks fun! :D
I really like the concept and especially this setting, it is so refreshing ;D Good luck. Can't w8 to see it on Liriks sub Sunday one day.
I loved todays devlog! Your game is really coming together :)
Thanks Calvin, cool things in the works I promise :)
Gotta say - very nice! I am a huge fan of all things Mario Cart, they have created so many great tracks, levels, and ideas over the years. Good luck with your game, it looks like it is turning out really great. Cheers
Super cool project! I appreciate your devlog as some motivation for my own project - specifically when it comes to dealing with the less exciting parts of games development (your trail remodeling).
Fantastic work again mate! It's really coming together!
Thanks dax :)
Loved the progress so far, keep it up!
LOVE IT!! Nicely done :D
The game is looking so good bro, can't wait to see where you take it
An avalanche item could be fun and interesting. Could just leave a big pile of snow behind the player for the opponents to navigate around or have the avalanche start on the side of the mountain behind the player and fall half way across the path creating a giant snow bank to go around or over
looks great so far! have some item ideas for you:
A blizzard that temporally blinds opponents/ hinders their vision
Snowmen/ snow people/ polar bears throwing snow balls from the mountains that nudges you in a different direction.
Santa's sleigh/reindeers comes up the trail very fast and knocks anyone in its path
raining boulders - boulders fall from the sky (players can see shadows as warnings to be able to dodge). players get squashed if they fall of them.
looks great so far!
Really like this concept so far, looks super fun!
instant sub good luck on you're game keep it up
This is awesome! I'd love to see an incentive to keep your speed until control, e.g. making it easy for the player to fly off the track if they go too fast. This would make the game feel more like real skiing, where you constantly have to turn to slow down. Descenders does a great job of this.
More wide open sections, as well as treed sections would be cool to see. You could even have optional tree sections acting as shortcuts, or allowing players to use trees as a shield from items, at the cost of incurring more difficult traversal.
First person would be awesome, particularly with VR. This could just be basic head tracking or you could go as far as implenting motion controls, where the player uses ski poles to control their turns.
Finally, a survival mode like ski.exe would be awesome. Yeti zombie survival?
I'm absolutely loving the content and can't wait to see more! Maybe you could add shortcut areas or even a zip line/ski lift mechanic for a precise shortcut challenge?
I like the idea of a ski lift. I remember in snowboard kids there was a ski lift that would take you to the top of the track so you could do multiple laps.
Hey hey! I just discovered your channel as I was falling asleep last night watching some youtube, and I woke up this morning to a brand new upload! What timing! The visual level of our game is unreal (pun intended haha)! Can't wait to see how the finished product turns out! I think what you've got going on with the b-roll footage of skiing from other angle is super neat looking, I would love to see that play in the background of a pause menu or end screen or something along those lines!
Thanks so much david! Glad to hear the timing worked out 😆. Yes, maybe I could use the alternate cam footage as kind of teaser content on the start screen or something! Will continue to think about it!
The game is looking really good ! I'm impressed
A cool item would be a ski lift, you place it in one spot and it forces players to move back in the track a certain amount
I am a ski racer, i love this project so much one thing i think would be cool to add is Gs style Paneled gates. It would be a simple edit to the model to add a second gate. If you get a chance you should look it up. I had a tough time looking at those flagged gates. Keep it up i think this is so sick.
Super cool video! Love the ideas for items!
Looks really good so far! Remember to have fun while developing it :)
Love what you are doing and how fast you are moving! Feedback: I wouldn't play this with a backwards facing camera, but would totally play with the option of a forward facing camera. In Mario Kart, the ski slope track is actually my favorite!
I was thinking that instead of the snow boulder being a pick up but when a player crashes they slowly roll around and pick up snow into a larger boulder and pick up players as they go. Eventually the snow boulder breaks and all the players picked up would respawn there, stunned. The snow boulder player could respawn at the last flag they rolled through or be stunned for longer than the other players - unsure on this - but its just an idea
Love the game :)
Super excited about how the game is progressing! Nice one Solomon!
Thanks nexus!
loving the idea so far, looking forward to the addition or trees, maybe the trees could be dislodged and a skier could ride a tree down the mountain, What about having other distractions happen like the odd yeti runs on the track attacking skiers, playerr could also throw snow balls at each other or maybe another power-up reward could be a snowball bazooka, a nice ending to a game would be an ability to watch a replay of your downhill run similar from what you see in actual sking events from multiple camera angles (maybe with the ability in being able to save that run in a movie format and ability to share it on social media. anyway looking forward to see this game continue to grow.
This looks really fun, looking forward to seeing it progress!
Your explanation of smooth shading is pretty wild! Cool to see people come in with new perspectives.
PS try using creases. They go great with a subdivision modifier.
Haha, yea I was trying to keep the explanation really high level without going into normals and how lighting works in 3d graphics. I rewrote that explanation like 5x 😂. I have used creases a bit with subdivision it's a game changer. Still pretty new to modeling but getting better. Appreciate the advice!
Looking great. My suggestion would be to put the camera behind the character like you have in your fly through at the end. It gives the impression of speed and makes the racing more fun. Like 1080 64 instead of downhill.
This looks awesome!
For me, the most interesting shots in the video were the ones with an over the shoulder camera, the top down camera is interesting, but a lot less personal and i feel it would pull players out of the immersion a good bit.
this is sick, maybe some directional tape/caution tape on cliff edges or sharp turns to add more to the environment maybe have it break away when someone runs through it, idk just thinking of additions. Looks great.
This game looks amazing! edit: You should add little paths and caves so you don’t just have to follow the same path as all the other players
This is shaping up to be a lot of fun
Wow, this looks like so much fun! Can't wait to see the final result!
Hey dude - looks ace, not sure if it's come up but might be worth looking at Snowboard Kids on the N64! Similar idea, but incorporates 'laps' by reaching the base of the mountain and getting the skilift back up! Keep up the work man!
Amazing video!
This game looks really good! reminds me of grand mountain adventure
I think pushing the saturation more would add a lot to the visual aesthetic of the game.
ABILITY IDEAS:
1. Freeze ray - fires a beam of liquid nitrogen that turns players into ice cubes disabling their ability to turn but still letting them keep their momentum.
2. Snowman/icicle - drop it behind yourself like a banana peel from Mario kart.
3. Snowball launcher - rapid fire snowball gun that slightly slows players with each hit.
4. Avalanche - summons a powerful avalanche that descends onto the track sweeping up everything in its path including the caster if they're not fast enough
There should also be more playable characters, like a polar bear that sits on a recliner and wears really cool sunglasses.
Love the freeze ray concept, you should put that one in the discord! The snowman too I actually have something like that written down, could have really fun "pop up" animation where they appear out of the snow 🤓. Avalanche sounds cool but it would be tricking balancing that one.
keep it up this is awesome!
Looks good man 🎉
I love it - Can't wait for more :)
this looks really fun!
Great video, I think you're on to something!
amazing progress 🔥🔥🔥
thanks stan ☺️
