This episode is a love letter to you and the Feline community at large for standing by me. In this episode I discuss my struggles with motivation and self-doubt during some pivotal decisions throughout the development of Project Feline.
Project Feline is an anime-style parkour adventure starring Gabi the cat-girl hybrid who can build insane momentum by running on walls, grinding on rails and sliding down hills. Using Gabi's feline abilities, players traverse complex environments as fast as possible! This documentary series explores my journey as an emerging indie game developer building my dream game from start to finish, utilizing the internet and community-powered tools like Unreal Engine and Blender.

Even though I've withdrawn from UA-cam a bit this year, lots of progress (visible and invisible) has been made on Project Feline. Lately with the help of my supporters I've been able to set time aside to produce more devlogs in the background. There are multiple episodes in the works and it will be a little while before they are ready to come out, but I've been sharing daily updates and video editing process with my supporters via my Discord server.

Building habits is incredibly important. Not just for game development, but for life itself. I used to live an unhealthy lifestyle due to poor eating and little to no exercise. After slowly correcting my diet, I eventually started incorporating exercise into my week. Fast forward to today, if I don't do all of my exercises on my workout days, I feel ashamed.

A quote I love from William Somerset Maugham and I first heard from the book The War of Art.
"I only write when inspiration strikes. Fortunately I am inspired every day at 9am sharp."
Basically you just got to sit down and do the work. Even if you don't feel it. It's a tough skill to learn but it's a very valuable one.

Those who are searching for a way to be self motivated I have two -
    1. Take a note book and everyday write down "I will make a great game" or something like that. Whenever you lose motivation, look at these words in the notebook.
    2. If you are demotivated, try to find the reason. What made you upset? What is not letting you work? Try to find solutions to those aspects. If there's something distracting you, throw it away at once. If it's a bug irritating you, leave it, work on something else and get back to it next day. If you can't come out with something, again, give it time. Not necessary that you need to do it then and there.

Your project actually motivated me to create my own game, we're 2 years into development and also on Steam. Habit forming is CRUCIAL, there are SO many days when Unreal is crashing or when there's a game breaking bug, or when you've accidentally deleted a days worth of work and you want to give up, or put it off for awhile. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one experiencing this.

I remember first hearing about this game, watching one of the earlier dev logs and seeing the effort put into animating Gabi at an anime frame rate in a full speed game, just being enamoured with the tech and coding work behind it. Cannot wait to see the game completed!

This is beautiful. This strategy can be applied to anything literally anything. I used to do the same thing when going for a run. My goal wouldn't be to go for a 5km run, it'd be simply be to put my running shoes on and step out the door, which was mentally far easier than "going for a run". The thing is once I had my running gear on and I was outside I FELT like running (90% of the time). It was very rare that I would turn around and come back inside. My fitness skyrocketed from the moment I started that habit.

While habbits beat motivation any day, I think there are a few rather easy things that can help "staying motivated" too, which also makes it easier to build habbits.
    1) Streamline your work. You can't keep the initial enthusiasm forever so I think it's best to prepare a (high-level) guidance to minimize any roadblocks you may encounter. The less effort it requires to get started the easier it will be for you. The initial step is always the hardest too, so starting should be extremely easy.
For me this includes working with a project board, where I can define features/tasks and structure them. It prevents analysis paralysis as I otherwise often get lost in thoughts about what is most important next, what I need to do before starting with this or that feature or in brainstorming details. So I can just sit down, read through a handful of tasks and pick the one I want to work on the most. Restructuring, extending and maintaining the board is a welcome change from the dev work too, as I can just fully commit to just brainstorming and be creative.
    2) Iterate fast. And I don't mean to rush everything but perfect is the enemy of good. When you are spending an eternity on a single task you'll likely get frustrated and burn out quickly. Especially if you finally got to a point where you are satisfied just to find out that the mechanic is not fun, doesn't fit the theme, etc. Progress and (small) successes on the other hand are inherently motivating I think, so keeping up a good pace can become a self-sustaining cycle. Just start and get some things done, even if you aren't super satisfied yet (as long as it works) or don't end up using it at all.
    3) Look out for inspirations. I like to watch game retrospectives, dev logs, etc - mostly out of entertainment - but I often get new ideas and an urge to implement them, especially if I already had some similar concepts or ideas which I felt were lacking before. Getting inspired often brings a new wave of motivation. It's just important to keep the scope realistic and to weave the inspiration into what's already there, so don't just start a new project any time you have a cool new idea.

I also asked you how you're focusing on the project for a long time. And I worried that you're answering the question for almost 10 minutes on the live stream. And I haven't asked any other questions since then. Anyway, I've been working on my habits for like 2 years. And I haven't heard of a method like yours. But I figured out that if you want to do something. Don't do other things. Just stare at the walls if you're bored. Then your brain will start to work. I'm sure this game is going to BOOM! No matter the time that's being released, watching you make progress is motivating!

This video seems like the most relatable video youtube has shown me. As an indie guy myself with a big project (24M visits) sometimes the pressure of how you want the game or story or whatever to turn out can be too much. But developing habits & talking to your community are some of the best motivating factors out there. When I see people im my community be hyped for the full release I get very motivated to get it done... Addicted, even, as you said!

Sup Raymond, see if you could revisit the overall level design, i think you were on to something with the Tony Hawks style open world aspect that leads to portals for different levels. Gamers just like other consumers dont know what they want, but being a dev myelf, I can tell you that your solution has been proven for Mario 64 (open hub world and transport to levels by traversing to paitings), Sonic, GTA. Trust me, you are on the right track, it will still provide some linerality.

Just like everything thats hard but needs doing, you just do it, and it gets easier to do as you do it.
Which sucks :P Theres no magic pill to make your entire project a breeze to do all the time. Ive been working on my own artsy projects as well, and the hardest part is constantly staying engaged enough to do the things that need doing, like the pose work or the building work. Its so easy to think it up and put it on paper in words, but actually crafting entire sets or making that pose look just right with limited tools and the like is very tedious and sometimes frustrating.
But the end result is always worth it. One thing that helps keep me moving forwards is that fact alone. The idea that i can look back at it and say 'i did that' just drives me.
But at the end of the day, you just do it because it needs doing and it wont be done unless you do it P:
Ironically another thing that really helps keep things moving, once you have this down and you just do it, is having a direction to move towards. Once you have both the drive and the direction, things usually just move on their own and fall into place. You just gotta set it all up and do it.
