Newly galvanised or re-galvanised parts will dull down after approx 6 months to lose that new look or can be dulled down with some commonly available products such as copper sulphate. I does however take years of wear & tear to create patina like this.

Is it possible to go too far with these brushes? I came across this video this morning, and bought some of the brushes for my drill. Just want to make sure I’m not going too far. Some of these galvanized bits had primer so it was a little harder to remove it, and I had to apply more pressure

You should be fine with drill attachments just make sure you don’t catch the the metal coupling that holds the wires in place as this will scratch and remove the coating. I would get a grinder attachment as well for larger sections it’s so much faster just be safe!
If your galvanised parts have primer on, you may find that the galv coating is no longer there and someone had applied primer to stop rust coming through. The wire wheel should have no issues getting through the paint.
As for going too far it’s kinda hard to explain, you have to keep an eye out on what your doing and you will learn as you go. The galvanise will “shine up” and might look like raw steel but actually it’s still there and fine. That bit in the video near the fill cap turned out to be fine even though it looks too far.
This is a technique I got from being a metalworker so I would say if your nervous the best way is just to experiment with a small piece of trim first, leave it outside for a few days etc and see how it fairs. You are very reliant on the galvanise under paint being in good condition and if it’s not you may think it was you but actually to remove the galvanised coating with the brass wires is hard to do but not impossible
Hope this helps and good luck!

Coarse wire wool and a screwdriver worked on mine. The galv has to completely disappear for the rest of the Steel to rust properly. I found aluminium primer dabbled onto some of the bad areas then wiped away with a finger mellows down pretty rapidly till it’s not visible. Had some holes by my filler neck that had a crude pet cap lock on it. Welded the holes up and dobbed some silver Ali primer round it. All looks well weathered now. No rust.
    Hate new galv btw.

We all have our techniques, it’s nice to hear what other people do. Glad you agree, new galv sucks! Haha

@@keenauto88 my Landy had been blown over with spray gun green. No primer. So a lot of it would just scratch off with a fingernail. That included edges of glass and all round the fuel filler. What a mess.

Did it get ya? All about the layers to protect yourself, a welding apron goes a long way. I wouldn’t use any other method though!
