    I’m loving the sounds of the cobalt!
    For a very first poly synth would you rather recommend a cobalt 8 or minilogue xD? They both sound so good and I really can’t decide!

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +1

      It’s very much a matter of personal taste. Is it generally your first synth or do you already have experience in sound design? If not, I’d rather choose a Minilogue xd as I find it a bit easier to understand. Cobalt 8 is great but not as the only synth in a Studio.

    • @marcdavis4412

      @@limbicbits I’ve only got a crave so far and it’s a monophonic synth. So I feel this would be my first bigger synth. So far I’ve mostly done sound design through massive by NI :)

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +1

      So you already know more than the Basics I guess. In this case, I’d choose cobalt8 over the XD although the xd is also great. But that’s just my personal taste and highly biased from a sound designer’s perspective. Maybe you’d also like to consider Novation Peak? I absolutely like this one.

    • @marcdavis4412

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +1

      @@marcdavis4412 understood - and I guess you'd like to get it right now (what I can fully understand) instead of saving up to a Peak. What I'd also like to add is a Korg opsix or a digitone. FM might be a nice counterpart but only if you like to learn about synthesis. As both units combine FM with subtractive synthesis the learning curve is not so hard, though.
      And to be honest the decision between those both is tough. Here's another thought: If you'd like to continue using your computer and Massive (e.g.), minilogue Xd could bring more to the table sound wise due to its analogue signal path. It's not a bass monster but certainly has its own character.

    i have to say, I try that out in a store. They sound like a mid class vet to me. Serum and even some freeware like surge sounds better. No low end, bad filters, no 3d sound, no good treble, all compressed. But the design is great and the keys are superb. But that is just my 2 cents.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  Рік тому

      hm. Sure, the one in the store had the latest FW version? I mean, Cobalt 8 has quite a particular sound that might not be for everyone. But I have to respectfully disagree that there's no 3D (or stereo spread). The Cobalt-Series is able to create some very lush and broad pads which is essentially one of their strongest areas, imo.
      The new filter models, FX and analogue OSC drift clearly add a lot more

      I did most of the sound design directly on the Cobalt 8. Only fine tuning (Envelope shapes, renaming the patches etc) have been done with the editor. But you have to learn some short cuts to really get fast.
      And although some workflow decisions on the Cobalt 8 drove me nuts, it's nothing in comparison to the Deepmind (especially editing the effects still give me nightmares ;))

    Hi mate, for a first time synth buy for someone wanting to make trippy ambient type music would you choose the Korg Minilogue xd, the Arturia Mini Brute 2, or this Cobalt 8?
    I want the best bang for the buck and best quality most suited to my needs 👍

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +2

      Amongst these three I'd go for Cobalt 8, tbh. Minilogue XD - albeit having the SDK-Options is still too limited overall. Minibrute 2 is nice, but being a monophonic synth it wouldn't be my first choice, and even less for Ambient where you'll most likely need good poly pads and drones.
      To make your confusion even worse, I'd also like to add to more synths to your list, which I find even better:
      Novation Peak:
      www.thomann.de/intl/novation_peak.htm?offid=1&affid=397
      This synth unites VA; wavetable, some FM and also analogue filters. It sounds great, has a very intuitive interface which is great for beginners but at the same time enough options that ist won't become boring after some time.
      and ASM Hydrasynth:
      www.thomann.de/intl/asm_hydrasynth_desktop.htm?offid=1&affid=397
      Furthermore, if budget isn't a thing, I highly recommend Waldorf Iridium which for me is one of the best synths out there. It's pricey, but you almost get everything: VA, Wavetable, Granular and an incredible flexible FM engine.

      @@limbicbits - Thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated. I must have asked this same question on 10 or more videos but got no replies.
      I'll check out your suggestions, I've not listened to any demos so it'll be interesting.
      I was beginning to lean towards the Cobalt but then I listened to demos of the Argon8 which to me sounds a bit mellower than the Cobalt, and for some reason the Argon is £100 cheaper. Are there any drastic differences between the Cobalt and the Argon?
      My search for a synth seems never ending 😆
      But I want the best one for my money, and don't want to buy one, then hear something that's better and wish I'd have bought that one instead if you know what I mean 👍

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +2

      @@JammyGit Cobalt8 definitely sounds lush - so if your aim is mainly mellow sounds you won't regret it. I've only played an hour with Argon 8 so I don't think that my opinion should count too much. I found it to be a bit harsher but I'm pretty sure it's nothing some good sound design can't correct. If you liked that sound I'd say give it a shot. Differences should be there - as both use different synth engines.
      And trust me - your search won't be over after one synth ;). And even if you find another synth you like better - you can always sell it or even trade it in if you find someone who wants to swap. Good Luck!

      @@limbicbits - Thanks for your helpful advice. It looks like I'll either go with the Cobalt8 or the Novation Peak, although I doubt I'll be able to afford over a grand. The Cobalt is nearly half the price of the Peak, and for my first synth I think the Cobalt doesn't seem so complicated or daunting as the Peak.
      Someone else recommended that I should get a Korg Wavestate, but after watching a demo, that synth looks way too complicated for my skill level (or lack of) 😆👍

  • @alexd0103

    Despite all the naysayers I think it sounds pretty good. It’s not got an outstanding character, which for a lot of purposes is a good thing. Bread and butter filler type sounds with headroom to make it sound like your own thing. It is nothing that can’t be done with vsts but we don’t want to do that or else we wouldn’t be here. Don’t think it excels at bass though.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  2 роки тому

      Depends on how granular you'd like the categorization to be. In my own sound packs (if the synth doesn't offer filter functions or tagging), I usually group categories together into the most common groups, e.g. Pads 1-20, Bass 21-29, Leads 30-39, and so on. This makes it easier to get started.
      But when I am making music, I usually don't group or categorize as I know most of my presets by heart and if not, I create some for the track I'm working on the fly.

    I get some serious stereo mud from this thing. I don't think poly is best suited for it

      You can easily turn down stereo width if you don't like the panorama spread. All in all, I think this one is excellent for polyphonic sounds, especially lush pads and drones.

    10:20 ... That reverb doesn't sit well with me

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому

      As for a traditional reverb I have to agree. But if you convince yourself that it's a poor spring reverb emulation it doesn't sound so bad ;). But I'd also use a different reverb. Delay is great though

    • @Gainn
      @Gainn 3 роки тому

      Modal's reverb is ass (too short and diffuse) and I'm pretty sure they know with how many people have told them.
      Hopefully it's just an algorithm they can update.
      I run my Argon into a 90's Digitech studio quad, so the Cobalt will probably use that too.

    The good sound is not a surprise coming from Modal. The sole thing I am not convinced by, like with many VAs, is the envelope amp. The attack sounds sharp in some patches but underwhelming in most. So is it rather problem with the source waveforms?

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, you can change the envelope behaviour using different settings (slow, Exp, log etc). which is pretty cool. Waveforms are just fine, but the stereo spread might cause some phase issues when overdoing.

      You have a point there , i also find the release portion so static sounding in poly use, like it fails to calculate tail of a voice independantly , i suspect they compromise there

    VA for its architecture.
    But the sound is very metallic, harsh... very digital. So not a VA for the sound.
    To me, it's a fail to emulate analogue synth.

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 роки тому

      I think it goes way beyond classical VA synthesis. But it certainly has its own character which you can either like or not. Which is not a bad thing at all.

      Making these plugout like Roland would have been a good idea as it looks like it shares the same chassis as the Argon.
