One thing that will definitely help with the Present Subjunctive is to remember that the stem of the verb in the Present Subjunctive is, with only a few REALLY irregular exceptions, EXACTLY the same as the stem of the "io" form of the Present Indicative. Thus, any spelling irregularity that exists in the "io" form of the Present Indicative will show up THROUGHOUT the Present Subjunctive. So, for example, for "fare," we do the following: Present Indicative: faccio --> Present Subjunctive: faccia, faccia, faccia, facciamo, facciate, facciano And for "potere": Present Indicative "posso" --> Present Subjunctive: possa, possa, possa, possiamo, possiate, possano Andare: Present Indicative "vado" --> Present Subjunctive: vada, vada, vada, andiamo (exception!), andiate (exception!), vadano
Sono italiana e mi piace molto vedere americani appassionati alla mia lingua! Complimenti, penso che i tuoi video possano essere molto utili per chi vuole approfondire la conoscenza dell'italiano!
Great video! There's a remarkable example that I just want to bring up here to underline how important and satisfactory is a proper use of the congiuntivo (despite the fact that unfortunately even so many italians often do not use it as they should). "Ammetto che il cane sale sul letto" vs "Ammetto che il cane salga sul letto". Just by switching the tense of "salire" from indicativo presente to congiuntivo presente you totally change the meaning of the sentence. It's all about the fact that "ammettere" could either mean "to admit/to acknowledge" or "to allow". Now, in the first sentence the clause "il cane sale sul letto" (the dog gets on the bed) is in indicativo (it means it's a certain thing), therefore the entire sentence means "I admit (I confess) that the dog gets on the bed". In the second one, salire is in congiuntivo, expressing therefore a possibility. So it means: "I allow the dog to get on the bed". (Please feel free to correct my english)
Personalmente penso che tu stia facendo un ottimo lavoro, grazie. sarebbe molto utile se la maggior parte degli italiani parlassero come te. Intendo dire a parlare a una velocità moderata.
Having studied Italian for a couple of years now, I use a variety of resources. Tom, your videos are the resource I keep coming back to. You are very good at this. Thank you for your continuing help.
Ho appena conosciuto i tuoi video e devo dire che sei perfetto! Sono brasiliano e per me c'erano alcune cose troppo difficili di capire e spieghi benissimo. Ottimo avere un così bello insegnante che parla così bene, grazie tanto bello.
I'm Italian and I can imagine that the congiuntivo is one of the hardest things to learn in our language, but don't get scared, there are a lot of Italians (maybe the 10-15%) who doesn't know when and how to use it properly and a way bigger part of us that while talking fast or with a friend gets it wrong. For example we should say "Non credo che la bambina dorma bene", but a lot of people say "Non credo che la bambina dorme bene". That' a mistake, without any doubt, but it's really frequent and it's not really bad one for a foreign person :) Please check my mistakes, so I'll learn something too!
Dear Tom, Thank you very much for your hard works to make all of these tutorials for us. I studied very first level of Italian 2 years ago and I gave up afterwards... since I could not find an effective way to self-study it after class. Recently, I came back to Italy again and seriously want to study again. By somehow, I went to you channel and I really really love it at first video. Your tutorial lessons are very well-explained, and easy to follow. That's what exactly what I have been looking for. Now my Italian has been improving significantly and I keep studying with your vids. Again, many thanks for your useful lessons!
I love this guy....what a great teacher. granted you have to know a bit of italiano before you get to this level but he's so gentle and so excellent in both inglese ed in italiano...bravo! I will definitely follow him...
Thank you so much for this! I've been learning Italian on and off for years and really enjoy being able to learn on my own time by watching your videos!
Way to go natural lighting!! I am so happy I discovered your UA-cam chanel! It's going to be so helpful in learning both English and Italian! Spero che tu abbia una bella giornata! :)
I've watched all your videos from the grammar basics... and i'm glad we're starting the next level.. and i'm learning to speak and understand italian so fast.. :) Big thanks to you! :)
Hi Tom! Please explain something about the reflexive verbs and it's imperative form with sample sentences. Thanks for all the well - explained italian lessons you have taught us. Indeed, you are an excellent teacher of language. More power to you! GOD BLESS YOU.
Lighting was the last important thing in this video! but thank you for always making even the descriptions so entertaining! :) and yes I've read it all! WAY TO GO NATURAL LIGHTING! ;)
Ciao Tom ! Grazie per i video ! I'm studying italian philology and I found your video lessons for very helpful. I like your manner of making the things simple! Sei una persona molto solare ! A presto ! :)
Congiuntivo is a fun tense! I can take us past the “normal” tourist language and open new deeper conversations. In Toscana it is the perfect mix between colloquial and polite! On the lighting - thought your dimmer switch was broken! :-)
Thank you so much for this lesson! : ) I can't wait for the next episode of advanced italian ^^ I always find your videos very helpful so please don't get sad by offensive comments and please continue to teach us the italian language... Spero che continui a insegnarci la lingua italiana!
Lovely! This was helpful and wonderful. Just wanted to say, though, that I am 99.9% sure that when you say "secondo me," then you actually use the indicative (because it is factual that: xyz is how it is according to me). It's weird for native English speakers because penso che and secondo me are basically the same phrase to us, but in Italian the former uses the subjunctive and the latter used the indicative. Bravo, Tom!
I don't know if this is correct but I think about the present subjunctive as "May". I found the key phrases very helpful and the overall idea that the subjunctive expresses opinions, possibilities, desires, doubts. Cosi ti ringrazio!
Hi Tom! Great videos- very clear and great to assist with learning Italian. I have been learning Italian for a few years and I was just wondering how long you have been studying Italian for? Keep up the good work and keep spreading the Love!!
Hi Tom, Thank you a lot for making videos. I have been following for white long time and I like them very much. I wonder if you have some tips for learning vocabularies? Thank you a lot.
i live in italy and i'm italian. We don't always use "che" or "se" (that/what-if).Somtimes we make a subjuctive also without "che" or "se" and you must understand the contest of the sentence to undestrand the means of the sentence.I hope that it was useful

+edoardo barbieri Very useful indeed Edoardo! Thank you! You know, I've noticed that. You don't always use "che" or "se." I've gotten so used to hearing it that now even I say things like "Penso sia perché..." ;)
thank you for explaining what that part of speech means(in English). I never understood it in English, so how can I produce the form needed in another language.
Ciao Tom. Grazie mille per i tuoi video. Loro aiutano a me molto. Quando lo farai il podcast? Ho cominciato usando queste recentemente e sono utili quando sono in giro. Julie
Spero che tu faccia un video dell'imperfetto del congiuntivo presto. Ma ho una domanda. Se io avessi voluto dire "I hope that you will do a video soon", come si dice quella frase? My question is will faccia become farai in my first sentence or is there a future subjunctive that I need to be aware of lol? A proposito, amo i tuoi video! Gia cominciai apprendere questa lingua in settembre e la sto amando tanto. Anche, to anyone, correct any Italian mistakes you see. I want to get better.
10 років тому+3
Hey, ciao! Grazie mille per i complimenti! I'll try to help you out! For "I hope that you will do a video soon" you could say either "Spero che tu farai un video presto" or "Spero che tu faccia un video presto." If you say "se io avessi voluto dire" it's like saying "If I had wanted to say" but you could also just say "Se io volessi dire" which is "If I wanted to say." Or even "Se io dicessi" which is "If I said." I feel like in the context of your comment, "se io volessi dire" should work fine. And for the last part you could say "Ho cominciato a studiare questa lingua a settembre e già l'amo tanto" which is "I started to study this language in September and already I love it a lot." Hope this helps!! Keep up the great work, you're off to a fantastic start! I should be doing more Congiuntivo videos soon!
Ciao Tom, can you help me to understand why Potere is considered irregular in the present subjunctive? The io form is posso, you drop the o and add an a, etc. Everywhere I look it’s called irregular in this tense. Grazie. Also, volere, io voglio, drop the o and add a ???
Spero tu riesca a raggiungere I tuoi traguardi, magari viaggiare all'estero ti potrebbe aiutare a consolidare il tuo inglese.
As Italian born and native speaker I can say almost no one in my country actually knows WHEN exactly the congiuntivo has to be used. Basically is like Tom said (with the correction in 'secondo me'), but the truth is that there is a lot of rules (and exceptions ) and only professional writers can use it properly based on the context. BTW, in the spoken language, in the most complex cases, is tolerated the use of indicativo instead. As trivia, in the movie series 'Fantozzi' all characters systematically use a wrong form of congiuntivo: the message behind that is that the form is too complex for normal/mean people and the movie is a (hyperbolic) depiction of normal/mean people working in Italy around 1970/80.
takaya todorok I think that depends very much on where precisely you come from. In the north of Italy the subjunctive is used much more than in the centre or south. For me (from Veneto), it comes very natural and it would sound odd to skip it as my Roman roommate regularly does. On the other hand, passato remoto for me sounds very pompous and formal and I never ever use it in everyday speech, which is not the case for my roommate. I think this may be because northern dialects have the subjunctive, but no passato remoto, whereas the opposite is true in the centre and south!
love this I have one question though, do I need to use the congiuntivo if I say "non so che......" or if I ask some one "lo sai che ....." ?
7 років тому+1
Thanks! Yes, when you say "Non so che/se.." you use the congiuntivo. But the positive version of this phrase, "lo sai che..." you don't have to. Because the negative one expresses uncertainty whereas the second one can express certainty. :)
Buonasera! Sono un nuovo abbonato. Mi piace molto il tuo canale, Grazie per il suo lavoro. Solo ho una domanda, Puoi mostrarci come se pronuncia la parola "ogni" per favore. Grazie mile!
Tom, can you one day make a video about 'clitics'. I am working through your vids and duolingo. duolingo calls them clitics. Words like te,ti,me,mi,vi,lo. They are confusing me delux. Thanks!
Te, ti, me, mi, ci and vi are different. Me and te are the personal pronouns for io and tu and could be translated in English like me and you. While mi, ti, ci, vi can be translated in English like 'to me' (mi) 'to you' (ti), to him (lo), to her (la), to we (ci), to you all(vi) and are used when the verb of the sentence needs a preposition before the object. For example, if you have to say "Tell me", you'll say in Italian "Dimmi" that is Dì+mi, with Dì that is the imperative of dire and me (di a me, say to me) or if you want say "If you need something tell it to me" you'll say in Italian "Se hai bisogno di qualcosa (something), dimmelo" Dimmelo is Di+mi+lo, (tell to me it) in fact is Di (the imperative), mi which means to me, that becomes me and lo that means 'it'

+GForbes There is no Future Subjunctive in Italian. When stating a wish or a desire for the future as you did, the Present Subjunctive is used.

For example, if you have to say "Tell me", you'll say in Italian "Dimmi" that is Dì+mi, with Dì that is the imperative of dire and me (di a me, say to me) or if you want say "If you need something tell it to me" you'll say in Italian "Se hai bisogno di qualcosa (something), dimmelo" Dimmelo is Di+mi+lo, (tell to me it) in fact is Di (the imperative), mi which means to me, that becomes me and lo that means 'it'
whoa so complicated but thanks for your great explanation!
