This was my favorite DS game as a child and one that I've easily put the most hours into replaying, so watching it get destroyed was very satisfying. Your live commentary was great and helped keep me engaged throughout all of it and explain what exactly was going on instead of letting us mindlessly watch a speedrun without any context for the tricks. Thank you so much for this!
I always thought of stone as a slow, defensive ability, (I used it to cheese the arenas) but it not only being used in the tas but as a main ability is something I didn't expect to see. Also you do get a little medal if you complete helper to hero with all the characters, but I understand why it's not in the speedrun.

29:21 and 30:30 both show off the main reason i love unskippable sections in TAS's. I love when the TASer just goes completely HAM with the movement for no reason other than to show off and pass the time.
That was super cool and interesting to watch. I would definitely like to see more commented tas. I appreciate that you protected meta knights true identity to last minute.

Great video! Crazy to watch one of my favorite games be messed with like this. Really insightful, I'm surprised at how much effort goes into manipulating the Halberd reactor.
I really like Tool Assisted Speedruns of Kirby of the Stars games, but I don't see a lot of them. I'm glad you made this one. It was very interesting to hear cool tech about Kirby Super Star Ultra.
using the frame perfect precision of recording a TAS to manipulate "random" ability mixing is something i would've never thought of, but that makes perfect sense.
For some reason this video is just PERFECT background noise for sleeping. It's a really interesting video, don't think I'm saying it's so boring I'm falling asleep!! But the long length and the consistent audio without any jumps in volume, as well as all being sound effects I recognize so I know what's going on without needing to open my eyes makes a perfect combination for going zzzzzzzzz

greatly enjoyed the commentary that came with this video. straight up to the point and explaining what you do without taking out the appeal of the actual run.
its interesting how you had to basically rework your mindset when it came to different minigames, since they worked differently. Really neat watch, I enjoyed it.
It was really cool to see the involved use of underused abilities like fighter and yoyo in this TAS. My only regret after watching was that sleep didn't get any screen time.
I watched this a month or so ago when UA-cam first decided to bless it by putting it in literally everybody's recommendations, and for some reason UA-cam is doing it again, at least to me. This video shows up in my recommendations in just about every video I watch.
I’d love to see a TAS where you can instantly change to any ability at any time. To see the fastest of fast. Also you imitating the fish boss and then poking it as MK was way funnier than it should have been, bravo.
1:15:39 that action you did for meta knight to push his sword up to emulate poking the whale up before they fall was so well timed and satisfying. Good job :3
i loved this game as a kid crazy to see the potential of wing and jet. I distinctly remember them as abilities I rarely used since jet was just kinda boring to me and wing I could never get the hang of the abilities. Awesome video man, loved the commentary
I like to think of the meta knight revenge segment of meta knightmare as meta knight testing his ship and its defenses for vulnerabilities that can be improved upon. It still doesn't make complete sense but its the best I’ve got
Man kirby is gotta be the most evil guy Whispy has ever seen, kirby kills Whispy 5+ times in a span of an hour and a half and also emotes on his dead body thrice at the same time (not to mention he does the same to all the other bosses aswell)
The DBC movement in this run is super cool. Shame that as far as I can tell it's basically TAS only cause it looks super cool and fun. I have *never* played Super Star Ultra but my limited Kirby experience and a few minutes of research have led me to that conclusion.
funfact:you can actualy skip the tower stage and if you werent going for 100% you could do that its simple! you just go to the left door you simply just go to the next area you dont even need to enter the tower wich means you also dont need to beat the boss

I love this video. Watched it all the way through 3 times now, but I was wondering exactly how rng manipulation works in this game. You mentioned it a lot but didn’t have time to go into specifics.
Specifics are hard since it’s a really heavy subject that I don’t really fully understand, but basically imagine there’s this big wheel of fortune that’s constantly spinning and landing on certain values which determine certain events. I can’t usually control when the wheel stops on something, the game decides when that happens whenever it calls an event, but I can still manipulate what it lands on by, for example, spinning the wheel faster. I can do that by forcing the game to call more events, which is easiest done by running around and spawning a bunch of dust sprites. I hope that analogy makes a little bit of sense haha maybe I’ll make a full video explaining it with visuals.
I'm playing through this game again right now and dude as a kid I was so bad and so stupid lol. I remember thinking the great cave offensive was impossible I just kept getting lost and the boss at the end killed me so much until I used the stone ability to avoid most of the damage. This time through I found 58 of the treasures on my own and destroyed the boss so easily
I honestly wish more TAS's had commentated versions. As much as I love the chaos of Tool-assisted Speedruns, they often get really boring to me and I end up either falling asleep or clicking off. With commentary Speedruns, it gives me more to focus on and helps me watch the whole thing through.
My first thoughts upon seeing that there was a commentated version was "this is where the fun *really* begins". I've always enjoyed listening to people actually explaining the crazy tricks used in tases to bring the time down as much as possible(even if I can't understand them a lot of the time)
Yeah. The tricks is half of the appeal for me. When I'm super interested in a TAS I can sit down and read the submission notes, but that can be really boring and take a long time. Commentary is way more interesting to me.
@@chainswordcs The tricks/ways they break the game are the WHOLE appeal for me. I'm not a good enough gamer to be aware of the vast majority of these tricks, so if they aren't explained, they usually go right over my head. That's kinda the thing about speedruns: if you didn't know any better, you'd probably not even realize how insane the run is because they tend to make everything look _just so incredibly easy._ (As in, if I hadn't ever played this game as a kid, I wouldn't even realize how much faster than normal the TAS is moving around. I would just think that you always move that fast in this game! Without the commentary, the incredible achievements of the TASer would be lost on many people, especially non-gamers)
This further proves why Kirby is the most powerful, he has 4th wall awareness and uses that knowledge to protect meta knights identity because even if Meta knight moved ever so slightly quick enough for Kirby’s eyes to not track his face to see him behind the mask, we can. Funny to think about this and would also be a funny reasoning of why meta knight so quickly became Kirby’s ally later on because he realized kirby being an all powerful being has a sense of honor that most do not.
52:25 "But who would I be if I didn't flex on the final boss?" I was expecting a rare transformation of stone, but literally flexing on Marx kinda was the only option.
As much as I love commentated TAS's, I love your sense of humor. "I refuse to explain this craziness" and "We haven't gone over ninja's above average damage, and we never will" are fantastic lines
"The only issue is that it covers such a large distance, that you actually need a good amount of space to pick up speed." "Luckily, these rooms have a good amount of space."
The run was cool on it's own but the guy's humor and commentary are what kept me watching the full hour and a half. Every time he flexed on the boss at the end with stone I had to smile
1:17:45, I totally agree. Love the small time saves because it feels like they have to be thought up and discovered in really creative ways, so it's fun to see tiny mechanics like that implemented to save frames!
Same, I prefer the small optimizations because it shows human ingenuity and the lengths people will go to be ever slightly faster, rather than just picking left over right
What I love in TAS is impossibly fast inputs, movements that dance on danger but never fail, and super optimized bosses. This has all of that and more. Also, commentary, so much better, actually explaining to me the strats.
Not only was every second of this fascinating and extremely engaging, you're really funny too, Hiding Meta Knight's face, teasing getting abilities and dying... There's so much fun things you can do with TASes like this, truly marvelous!
Honestly one of the best TASs out there. Commentary, absurd movement, weird tech, the works. What really sets it apart is the playabout in autoscrollers/cutscenes though. Most TAS's don't do much, but the little pointless challenges, the absurdly hyperactive movement, and the little touches like stabbing the eye on the frame it explodes, or hitting the background whale really made every second of this run super entertaining :D
Commentated speedruns are a niche that otherwise only AGDQ really provide most of the time.
I really appreciate commentators. Makes even the unoptimal or long speedruns so much more fun to watch.

Funny to think about this and would also be a funny reasoning of why meta knight so quickly became Kirby’s ally later on because he realized kirby being an all powerful being has a sense of honor that most do not.
@@joxyver so he’s a *meta* knight
@@joxyver idk meta knight could be more powerful if you count the non canon times he's beat galacta knight whos the powerful being or some shit
@@inkfae9916 quite the (s)word play master we have here, don’t we?
Meta Knight is secretly Lololo. Have you ever seen Meta Knight and Lololo at the same time?

You are the president of the seems, bonkers club
eeeeeeeEEEEEYA bonkers
52:25 "But who would I be if I didn't flex on the final boss?" I was expecting a rare transformation of stone, but literally flexing on Marx kinda was the only option.
Muscles!
The puff backwards thing makes it look like he's shooting out air so he gains speed from the propulsion, which is a fun little aesthetic thing.
As much as I love commentated TAS's, I love your sense of humor. "I refuse to explain this craziness" and "We haven't gone over ninja's above average damage, and we never will" are fantastic lines
Three words: "See ya Bonkers!"
"The only issue is that it covers such a large distance, that you actually need a good amount of space to pick up speed."
"Luckily, these rooms have a good amount of space."
“What shape the stone is, is random and purely aesthetic, but who would I be if I didn’t flex on the final boss”
The run was cool on it's own but the guy's humor and commentary are what kept me watching the full hour and a half. Every time he flexed on the boss at the end with stone I had to smile
"The weird movement I'm doing is just for the sake of doing weird movement."
The best part of TASes is always the movement during autoscrollers
I love when they have zero care of dying. "When you no longer fear death...you will start to dance with it." -someone out there somewhere
Not only was every second of this fascinating and extremely engaging, you're really funny too, Hiding Meta Knight's face, teasing getting abilities and dying... There's so much fun things you can do with TASes like this, truly marvelous!
My favorite is the flexing stone
@Megakirby21 except alt so this is what TJ "Henry" Yoshi feels like ==x)
Even if he eventually let us see meta knights face lol. Gotta say the stone did make up for it.
