      Apparently they were worried about Picard's stability after being assimilated by the Borg, and the Enterprise was mostly sent around on diplomatic missions, mainly to impress people with how the Federation was so unconcerned with the war that they sent their flagship, one of the most powerful ships in their fleet, to serve as an interstellar Hyatt for ambassadors to rub elbows in.

      And The Breen, though possessing the “Star Trek c list alien races” mysteriousness and scary alien tech (like the Tholian web or the Sheliak colony ship creepiness ) and the backstory of 1v1 ing the Klingons and winning, ultimately turned out to be something of a paper tiger. Their exclusive energy draining beam weapon was reverse engineered by the Allies and without that tech their ships were a one trick ponies. Suck to be them.

      The original comment here about the Cardassians ... Gul Dukat, in particular ... is the most accurate. After the failed Tal Shiar/Obsidian Order op in the GQ ... the Cardassians were ripe for Gul Dukat to do EXACTLY what he did (which is why the Dominion targeted those two secret organizations specifically). The Cardassians had been looking to regain stature in the AQ ... and Gul Dukat wanted stature for himself. it was a recipe for intergalactic disaster.
      Truth be told, Sisko gave the Federation as much time as one human could for them to prepare for war. He kept Bajor out of the fighting outright. He got the Klingons back in the fold, and worked with Garak to get the Romulans off the NAP.

    As with all peace treaties in the past, the negotiators never take into consideration future problems which could occur as a result of the reasons for a peace treaty in the first place. For example: the negotiators of the Vietnam War never considered demanding the release of all POW's being held in captivity by the NVA. To this day, how many of our fighting men in North Vietnam have died waiting to be released so that they could come home. No one knows. In this instance, the Alpha Quadrant never considered that many founders were still out and about thinking of ways to seek revenge against the federation, klingons, romulans, etc. for their defeat during the dominion war. Had they even considered having all founders still in the Alpha quadrant return to the great link, then it is probable that what happened on Picard season 3 would not have happened. Just a thought. However, I think that Mr. Roddenberry( R.I.P. ) would have been proud of the end result either way.

    • @davidwuhrer6704

      Some people did.
      Bismarck brokered a secret deal between Germany and Russia that made war impossible. Then he was fired by his boss who didn't like the idea of peace at all.
      The next guy to think of it was assassinated. Then war was declared.
      Then the Tsar abdicated. This resulted in several groups wanting to ascend to power. One of them (the Communists) signed a treaty to opt out of the war. The infighting that followed was even more brutal and outlasted the Great War itself.
      Then things looked mostly peaceful again for a while, until there was a coup in Germany. Some treaties were changed to appease any reason Germany might have had to go to war, the Communists even bribed them, but to no avail. Meanwhile, Japan was already in Manchuria to protect those poor Koreans and Chinese from the evils of Communism. War had broken out again before most realised it.
      Even though the Communists put a stop to the treasonous war-mongering Germans, and even though neither Germany nor the Communists have started a war again since then, war has never stopped. There is just too much money to be made.
      So of course when Russia stopped being communist, they almost immediately started a war with Chechnya. Ka-ching!

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Рік тому +3

      It would have been pointless, because the Dominion would have just used Picard's attempts for peace to step all over him. Part of Sisko's usefulness was that he never believed the dominion actually wanted peace, thus couldn't be lulled into a false perception of peace. So all they would have done was tell Picard one thing and do another. Picard was the type of man who would drop his guard just to try to calm things, but that would have been a critical error when dealing with the dominion, as they had no intention of peace.

    • @ricardogalvan1031

    • @peoplez129
      @peoplez129 Рік тому +2

      @@ricardogalvan1031 We see multiple times where Picard dropped his guard to give an olive branch in hopes of calming things. But that's exactly the games the Dominion liked to play. You can see many times how Weyun would say one thing to Sisko but it being a front. The Dominion would even pretend to be keeping up its end of the bargain, while secretly doing other things. Picard wasn't dumb, but it's not about being dumb, it's about making concessions that become critical mistakes that allow the Dominion to get what they want. Picard is more of a "well we did everything we could to appease them" type of person. But when it plays into the hands of your enemies rather than thwarting them, it's a crucial mistake. Even Sisko almost made some mistakes, for example, giving up territory that the Dominion secretly wanted for their white supply. Picard might have actually given it to them as an olive branch, not even realizing it was going to be used for that.

    The Dominion wanted to get as many warships through the wormhole as possible during peacetime, in order to conquer the Alpha quadrant afterwards when their forces, would have even outmatched the collected superpowers in the Alpha quadrants armies. The dominion was therefore winning the pre-war peace by having warships pass into the Alpha quadrant from the gamma quadrant through the wormhole and Starfleet was forced to mine the wormhole closed, if it wanted to survive in the near future. The Dominion is a hyperpower in the gamma quadrant, were as the federation only was one of the superpowers in the Alfa quadrant. No matter Picard, the war was inevitable because of the dominion's ideology of domination of all solid lifeforms, into submission. " What you can control, can't hurt you". The founders and the dominions ideology. The only reason the combined forces of the Federation, Klingons, and Romulans were able to defeat the Dominion was, that the dominion didn't get their full forces through the wormhole before it was mined and later because the beings in the wormhole, didn't allow the main force, to pass it. The distance from the Gamma- too the Alpha quadrant by warship at full warp speed constantly, were 70.000 light-years or about 70 years of travel. 1000 lightyears in a year of travel at full warp. The dominions war breed biologically engineered Jem'Hadars only normally had a lifespan of 20 years and no-one had lived past 30. Therefore a dominion military army could not travel by full warp from the Gamma to the Alpha quadrant, since all soldiers would so had died many times over from old age, before they would have arrived.
    so to summarise, even Picard's skills in diplomacy wouldn't have changed anything, if he had been in the DS9 series. But his skill in perceiving malicious deception would had probably and he would have collapsed the wormhole at once or had it mined, longtime before Sisko reacted and did something about it.

      Picard wouldn't have given the Dominion any reason to start a war.
      If they had started a war anyway, it would not have been with the Federation.
      Afterwards, the Federation would have been the strongest power left.
      Either way, the Federation would have assimilated the Dominion sooner or later. The Klingon empire was about to join, and reunification with Romulus was within reach.

      @@potsdam28 Not an excuse, of course they don't need that. But war is a costly endeavour, the Dominion didn't attack right away, they tried diplomacy first.
      If weapons and the unconditional loyalty of their thralls was all they had, with no sustainable economy to feed their troops, war woukd have been the Dominion''s only option (absent an altruistic civ to nurture them, but the Founders would not have liked not being at the top anymore).
      But they tried diplomacy first, so war was not their only option nor their first resort; they felt they had something left to lose. They did try to colonise the alpha quadrant through more subtle, and much cheaper, means. Which failed.
      They might have started a war either way, but there was no reason for the Federation to be involved. But with Sisko, the Dominion had only two choices: Attack the Federation, or give up all their assets in the alpha quadrant and risk being attacked by any of the powers there. Sisko got the Federation involved because above all he wanted to protect Bajor at any cost. (How patronising; and he said in the first episode that he didn't want the Federation to unilaterally set Bajoran policy just because they could.)
      Who does this Sisko think he is, making far-reaching decisions for others like that? A Bajoran Prophet or something?
