    hi, it is July1, 2021. My screen name is fred but I am an old lady, turning 70.
    Your transmission hack worked. I drive mostly in 2nd but can do 3rd gear.
    When on the freeway, I put the car back into Drive and it shifts into (automatic) 4th.
    As you said, this proves my transmission is fine; it is a solenoid or whatever...maybe a fuse.
    Thank you. I can go grocery shopping, etc. I don't have money for a different car. So thanks!!

    This also works on the Nissan Frontier. All 3 of my shift solenoids are going out. It's much worse in the cold winter months. It will take 5+ miles of driving before it shifts into drive from 2nd. Here lately, it just started down shifting when letting off the gas. I bought the solenoids, but nervous about changing it lol.

    I was at a stop sign and started out and the van (which only has drive gear. 3017) raved up to 4000 rpms and only went 20mph. I stopped then started the van again and put it in revervse and then back to drive and there was a jerk and drove it home. All was well. I drive it without any problems. But that night it was hot from long driving. Is heat of engiene the cause?

    West of Calgary Alberta Canada his mountain is what we call Foothills but an incline is an incline. My failing automatic transmission my 05 Jetta TDI I do the same thing roughly and what he saying does work. You have to be steady on the gas and then you have to back off and let it shift then give it steady gas again. But our 8-degree inclined can last 10 miles. I'm guessing Colorado might have similar conditions. People have to learn to listen to their transmission and not fight it if you want any kind of longevity in an older vehicle

      +Emanuel Kirkwood I hope you didn't change the trans or valve body. FWIW: I had a BMW 528i that behaved the same way. Every shop I brought it to said 'New Transmission'. Some didn't even road test it! I did a lot of research on BMW Forums. The transmission was notorious for burning out the 2/3 solenoid. I don't remember the model #, but this trans was also found in a long list of Cadillacs and Hondas to Volvos. The more I read, the more I thought: it has to be mechanical. Otherwise it would slam in manual too.
      This had to be about 8 years ago.
      The 2/3 solenoid was $65 and entire set was $150 on Ebay.
      I took a chance on the entire set. I finally convinced my mechanic to change them. Charged me like $100 (I'm in NYC) Problem Solved! Hope this help you.

    Do you have directions for 2012 Ford Focus s ?

    • @SouthernPinesNetwork
      @SouthernPinesNetwork  5 років тому +2

      I have actually had a Focus do essentially the same thing. Although the transmissions are different the process is just about the same. On mine, it was the 2-3 solenoid that went bad on a Focus I had. So, for the most part, any hills or or any time I had to hit the gas hard, the car would act like it was "slipping". In fact though, it was just a solenoid issue. Again, the process for those cars are pretty much the same as for the explorers. The difference is the speeds you will hit doing these actions. AND, for the most part on the focus just keep the gear selector in 2nd gear for speeds under 45... If you're climbing mountains do so in 2nd gear and climb it at 45 or less. If you need to accelerate to get on the highway, be in second gear, run the car up to 50MPH and then quickly let off the gas and shift into drive at almost the same time. wait to feel the shift and then accelerate lightlyto get to highway speeds. Hope that helps!

      just a cold running truck. I have seen quite a few in that era of ford that run that low, or the gauges are calibrated wrong??? I now have the next gen and it runs about dead middle of the gauge, so Im not sure what the deal is with those. Thermostat opened and performed as it should though. Thank you for sharing however it is less then $100 an very easy to replace yourself so I was wondering why not just replace the torque solinoid? I understand if it was thousands of dollars and 20 man hours to fix... But it's maybe an hour work and 87 dollars. You will save money by spending money on the mere fact of gas consuption an harsh driving.

    Do you got written out directions for this technique .. well first does this work for 1999 Mazda millenia with code :Gear 4 incorrect ratio?

    • @SouthernPinesNetwork
      @SouthernPinesNetwork  5 років тому

      Well I could surely try to write something up, but in your case it may not apply. The Millenia has a 4 speed auto, so you cant skip 4th, since it is the last gear. What you can do though is eliminate it. I believe they are essentially a 3 speed with overdrive. You likely look at your gear shifter and see D, S, and L (or maybe D, 2 and 1)… and you have an overdrive button??? on the side. Try driving with OD OFF! That would eliminate 4th gear. you would use a little bit more gas but it would eliminate the last shift. You could go to S or 2, but you likely wouldn't want to drive faster than 45-50 mph.

    • @liaphat4973
      @liaphat4973 4 роки тому

      Hey Brittany, not sure if you already fixed your issue but usually with gear ratio codes, your transmission is going out. You might need to replace your transmission

    My 05 explorer wasnt shifting past 2nd and I'd have to pull over, switch off, then back on and as long as I took off kinda fast it didnt happen. Not peeling out, just not creeping off. The other day I ACCIDENTALLY learned that if I push the button down by the console that says.... shit...what does it say? .... advanced track I think????? Anyway push the button to turn it OFF and BOOM problem solved. It stops immediately.

      ahh, so my best guess would be that your traction control, like many systems today function by reading abs sensors and other sensors that generate a signal which translates to a "speed", so, if in fact a speed sensor is not working properly, your transmission will not know what speed you are going and there may not shift properly. Some fords are a dead giveaway. I bought a minivan for $100 a couple years ago because a shop said it needed a trans. I was going to part it out but when I got in it to move I noticed the speedometer wasn't functioning. It was $30 to replace the speed sensor and the van ran great.

    So you are driving as if it was a manual shift

    • @SouthernPinesNetwork
      @SouthernPinesNetwork  4 роки тому +2

      sort of... drive it like a manual but pretend your running 2nd gear up until you have enough ground speed to shift to 4th without lag... in this scenario 2nd is 2 on your gear shifter and D (drive is 4th)

    So basically... drive it like a stick shift?

    • @SouthernPinesNetwork
      @SouthernPinesNetwork  4 роки тому +2

      yes, at least for the purpose of getting past whatever gear is giving you the trouble. So if the 2 to 3 shift is the issue, hold it down in second and run your RPMs up just like you would if passing someone in a manual transmission vehicle. That will get your speed up high enough that when you switch it into drive, the computer will tell the transmission to go to a higher gear. So, yeah, a lot like a stick but only for the portion of the shifts that are not functioning properly.
