I just got a Nox 800. I took it out yesterday for the first time. I was on an old school property around the old football field that isn't used anymore. I decided to use the 4 khz to look for silver coins since that is what it was intended for. I didn't find silver, but I do recall getting a jumpy high tone on a signal and then changing to multi and it locked in on 12-13. I dug it and it was a nickel. I'm new to the machine, but I thought that was odd. I'm still playing with it. Thanks for the videos. I'm learning from you as well.
I thought the 4kHz was mainly for higher conductors such as silver coins. Multi-frequency will pick up low and high conductor targets well. I think the 4kHz is separate from multi-frequency. I use field 1 and switch from multi to 4kHz when I hear a faint high deep tone to get a better accurate tone/ reading. Sometimes, if I'm at a hard hunted site, I'll leave it on 4kHz to catch any deep silver coins on edge that would otherwise be missed in multi-frequency. If I'm wrong, let me know.
@@ZSmittyman Imo, I think the 4kHz frequency would be most beneficial at heavily hunted sites that have produced lots of silver coins. At these kind of sites, it would be safe to assume, (I know, you shouldn't always assume) that most of the trash has been dug, if it has produced silvers and relics really well. My buddy and I have hunted a local park to death and there is hardly any trash, but it's still sparsely producing good targets. This is where I use the 4kHz to get the deep goodies. Use it at a park and prepare to get plenty of trash. The secret there would be to go for the deep high tones, not the shallow. But you never know, it just might be a shallow silver ring too.

Minelab says the 4kHz is for deep objects like those found in Asia. Also, they state readings will be different from other freqs. So why are you and others using the new lower freq for coin hunting?
I agree, like any detector with adjustable frequency's the lower ones are more effective with deep higher conductors. Multi Frequency will give a more steady VDI for targets due to the algorithms programed into the software. Use the optional frequency's to suit the various hunting conditions.
@@keithflesser1533 I guess a lot of people hunt the same areas. changing frequencies essentially give you a different machine and you can pickup things you miss. Also, whatever the intentions are for the various settings, real world behaves inexplicably at times and you can pickup good stuff just by doing something different - against all reason!
Thank you for testing the update 3.0. I want to update my Equinox 800 but my laptop died LOL so now I have to get a PC to update my Equinox to the 3.0 by the way nice video 😃👍
Hi Larry, only just bought my 800 and still have a lot to learn, your videos are great and really helping me get to know things. Quick question how do I check what version of the software my machine has loaded ? Apologies if you have said in one of your other vids it’s just I haven’t seen it yet. Thanks again.
Hey Sod Buster Great video I haven’t updated my 800 yet I was wandering when you were hunting in the 4 kHz and you had a signal What kind of a signal you would get if you stepped to the side of the target and ran the 800 over target in the other direction I think we might be surprised
I did swing over many of the targets from different directions while I was testing the update but only to be frustrated with how everything was changed for the worse. I actually was losing confidence in the machine and had to remove the update.
i saved my coin program in my profile and switch back and forth to check target also i don't use the pinpoint button iuse the front of the coil where the little diamond mark is.i have the same shovel and my holes are the size of the shovel width
That is exactly what I do. I swing on the target, swing back slowly till the tone disappears. The target is right at the tip of the coil. Dig a small plug and bam, there it is. Makes for a quick target recovery.
I just bought my detector last week. Howcdo i know what update i have and ig its up to date. Only new to the 800. Finding a little hard to use . I have been using the a hatrett AT Pro for the last 6 years .i have no idea trouble knowing what i am finding. I know if i should of stuck to garrett now . Ok I know this that this video is a couple years old and considering I just bought my 800 July 14 2022 and tested couple days later using this Chanel’s instruction and only found trash but it was a test run as the beach I hit was not that good ,I’m guessing that since it’s brand new I haven’t really mucked around(played) with the frequency so I’m new to this and will pick it up quick. I’m guessing that and not being a computer geek or frequency for that matter and a saying I’m sure we’ve all heard is - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I’ve still got more to learn and noticed that you were in park mode using frequency 4 what about other modes how does that frequency work will it be better than park compared to gold sites and hot grounds?
I was only running 4 khtz as a test. Run it in multi but you may want to view my other equinox tutorials also ua-cam.com/play/PLjrtO2dCo3KHkjtqTrlcCWu4Q6OpFeyIL.html
Here is the verbiage from the v3 update document. A new Single Frequency of 4 kHz has been added to the existing 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz options. This new 4 kHz frequency enhances the detection of large deep targets, particularly those found in parts of Asia. As a result of optimising for these conditions, this new frequency may respond differently for users compared to the other single frequencies. All other single and multi-frequency settings are unchanged in their performance. In addition to the 4 kHz upgrade feature, various stability enhancements have been included.
the update seems to make the machine over sensitive it just won't lock onto a target like it did before and the 4 khz says every target is in the 30-39 range nails, bottle caps, pull tabs ,etc I'm new to the nox so some of this could be me, but it worked fine before the update thanks
Wasnt this not ment to be? I readed a statement of ML that the new 4 khz mode was for a certain type of hunting, i thought it was Asia and war stuff... But they also stated that the new 4khz operates much different compared to the other frequency's and due to that you had to get the feel with it.
I updated and tried 4 khz. I noticed that pulltabs and other aluminum always rang up very high so.....don't like it. My question is then what other changes were done, if any, in the version 3?
I wish ML would have used a number for target depth like the Anfibio Multi from Nokta/Makro has. I think I will do a factory reset on my 600 (I have already applied the 3.1.3).
Larry, I bought my 800 a couple of weeks ago in March of 2021. Would my 800 have the new update because mine has been acting the same way I get a signal and then its gone erratic number changes and depths are way off. I hunt with my son who has the Gold Monster 1000 and has picked up many more signals. I'm disappointed in the performance of the 800 to much technology in a small package they should have kept it simple.
Steve, follow this videos instructions as if you are going to do an update to see what version is on your machine ua-cam.com/video/VmJ_OJO3InQ/v-deo.html If you do have the 3.0 you can revert back to 2.0
I'll check thank you Larry. One more think I forgot to ask you in some of your setup video's on the 800 you mentioned about a book by Andy Sabisch that would help with setups etc. but there's a blue version and a yellow version which one would you recommend or is one an updated version for the 3.0.
I was on 1.7.5 version before the update and I liked that much better , I will be switching back to my old version , it seems to me that they have nulled the machine down to gain the extra stability , there is allways a trade off , field 2 mode on version 3.0 is like field 1 mode on version 1.7.5 if you get me , no good to me
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting I think the 1.7.5 version is great the only reason I was curious to change it is because when I'm running field 2 if I bang the coil on something slightly when swinging it will make a tone which can get abit annoying but I will take that over the nulled down 3.0
Detecting rookie here... what is the advantage of say using a single freq. like 4 over just leaving it in multi? Does multi use all the available frequencies?
Yes multi utilizes all frequencies. I dont use the update which has 4 KHZ but it is meant for deeper large targets from what I understand. It is optimal to hunt in multi
I knew it was a bottle cap before you Doug it. If the I.D suddenly from about 16 in multi to about 34 in 4 KHz it most likely a bottle cap. Just to double check go into all metal and slowly back off from the target and if it gives an iron grunt then it’s definitely a bottle cap.
I'm wondering. I just purchased my Nox 800 about a month ago. Do you think they already installed the 3.0 update at the factory? Still trying to get used to it and doing ok with it but digging lots of junk.
The update won't stop you from digging trash, learning the tones of the detector will. Here is a video to learn how to do the update if you want and I have many tutorials for the new equinox user that will help you learn the detector ua-cam.com/video/VmJ_OJO3InQ/v-deo.html
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting Thanks Mark, Yes I have watched a bunch of your videos. I've also liked and subscribed. I'm in NM and will be using this for gold shooting eventually. Our ground here is VERY different from your ground. Some people prefer single frequency in certain situations such as gold nugget hunting or if emi is too much in multi but in most cases muli is the way to go
Hi from France...Try that!!!... ... for V3 : Setting- Mode: Park 1, speed 6, Sensitivity 25, Iron Bias F2 4, Freq Multi or 4 Khz... ...try end tell me...best regard's.
I purchased the 800 two weeks ago. I have looked for the update by running the update software on my machine and the 3.0 doesn't seem to be available. It tells me my software is up to date and my current version is 2.1.12. Do you know if this update has been removed?
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting I contacted Minelab. They suggested I uninstall the update utility and reinstall through the link they gave me. After doing this I was able to do the update. It would appear that my original version was corrupt.
Thanks- I see...but I wonder what the 4khz setting actually does. I’m very intrigued by the guy who commented that when he goes to the beach when he switches back-and-forth if the reading changes it’s always trash. So I can see that the setting would be useful for that👍. GREAT VIDEO...
A friend of mine was telling me that to let the new update settle in you need to factory preset. Is this true and could it be what part of the problem was ?
You have corrupt software. I would reload Version 2.0 and Version 3.0 I have the new 3.0 and don't have a problem with depth realing, where it pinpoints and no difference in VDI.
No disrespect but don’t think you are using the 4khz in the way it’s intended and to keep comparing it to the multi frequency is wrong. Very low frequencies are meant for deeper large objects and preferably with a large coil, as it penetrates deeper. Not meant for small shallow objects
Just go to park 1 and then go to accept/ reject and block out -9 to 24. BOOM YOU GET TO GRAB DIMES QUARTERS HALF DOLLARS AND ALL 90% SILVER COINS! I dont understand why all these you tubers are trying so hard to figure this out. Using the program like that will grab all the easy silver that all the old machine rejected or could not detect...... You dont even have to use the new 4khz. The stabilization update itself is why people are finding more silver.....
@@kansasrelicsandrecovery I tell you what, I live in the United States. So it was not an improvement for me. I dont have any Chinese silver hoards buried in the ground in upstate New York. In my opinion Multi Frequency is still king. I have heard of others that are just using the 4 Khz as a cross reference to multi frequency targets, but it really has not improved my detecting one bit. 4 KHZ HAS NOT PULLED 1 COIN OUT OF ANY AREA I HAVE ALREADY POUNDED WITH MULTI FREQUENCY BEFORE AND AFTER THE UPDATE. So I really dont understand this MASSIVE PHENOMENA of people claiming that they are finding all these silver coins in places that they have hunted before when it has been absolutely untrue for me and im digging in a 220 year old neighborhood with a Militia Training ground ( which is now the part of 2 of the public parks) Which is about the size of 3 Football fields. I have repeatidly pounded these areas before and after the update and not 1 silver coin has been found using 4 khz. NOT ONE! Youd be lucky to get any deep can slaw that i was too lazy to dig. I truly doubt the majority of these people are using their machines properly and they may even be getting lucky by digging up trash and unmasking targets, but this update is not doing anything for people that have been using this machine for almost 3 years and REALLY know how to use it. Its just not possible.
Nothing to see here. Freq reacts to different conductivity of different metals, and thats why you get different numbers. 4Khz is great for high conductivity metals like silvers and the lower freq goes deeper then higher freqs. thats why the Nox shits all over most single freq detectors.
I really like your videos, expertise and advices you give. However, this field test video wasn't one of your best. Not in terms of the video quality, but rather in terms of content value. I personally did not derive many useful conclusions from it. The only one clear thing was that the 4khz is useless on nickels, it appears. I wonder if, instead of a nickel, it was a gold ring that would normally come in at 12-13, how the 4khz would react to it. Or how the next comparable frequency, 5 khz (before the update) would react to nickels. Also, there was zero comparison to the way your machine performed before you did the update, in the same park, on similar targets, with all other settings identical. I'd like to see a comprehensive garden test video before and after the update, using the same targets, depth, ground moisture and machine settings, the only variable being all frequencies performance before and after the update. Thank you for your, otherwise impressive, contribution to the metal detecting community. FYI, I updated my 800 to 3.0 a couple of months back and me too I'm not very happy at the moment with it and I'm contemplating on reverting back to 2.0. But I feel that I need more information before doing that. I keep looking for more in depth testing videos on this specific topic and I don't seem to find anything significant. I'm planning on running my own garden test this spring. If anyone happened to have seen one, please point me in the right direction. Thank you.
Thank you for your input and yes I agree that there could have been more comparisons done. I was very frustrated with the performance I got from the update and spent no time going back to the 2.0 version. I appreciate you watching my videos and for being honest in your comment, it helps me improve on helping the community if I know where I lack. Happy hunting

This was only a quick test on the update, I wasn't necessarily coin hunting.
@@briansewart5885 totally agree with you, same if you were too change coils.

Thank you for testing the update 3.0. I want to update my Equinox 800 but my laptop died LOL so now I have to get a PC to update my Equinox to the 3.0 by the way nice video 😃👍
Thank you, I appreciate you watching
How do you find out what software version you have on your Equinox 800? Thanks for your information that has been very helpful
@edmilligan3939 plug it in as if you aregoung to do the update and it will show you what version you have.
Hi Larry, first i thank you for sharing your first impressions about the new update.
Thank you my friend 😊
3 years on. What were advanced settings cheers how did ya go with silver.
Hi Larry, only just bought my 800 and still have a lot to learn, your videos are great and really helping me get to know things. Quick question how do I check what version of the software my machine has loaded ? Apologies if you have said in one of your other vids it’s just I haven’t seen it yet. Thanks again.
The instructions in this video will take you where you need to be to check ua-cam.com/video/VmJ_OJO3InQ/v-deo.html
Hey Sod Buster
Great video
I haven’t updated my 800 yet
I was wandering when you were hunting in the 4 kHz and you had a signal
What kind of a signal you would get if you stepped to the side of the target and ran the 800 over target in the other direction
I think we might be surprised
I did swing over many of the targets from different directions while I was testing the update but only to be frustrated with how everything was changed for the worse. I actually was losing confidence in the machine and had to remove the update.
i saved my coin program in my profile and switch back and forth to check target also i don't use the pinpoint button iuse the front of the coil where the little diamond mark is.i have the same shovel and my holes are the size of the shovel width
That’s interesting- I’d like to learn this technique for sure!
That is exactly what I do. I swing on the target, swing back slowly till the tone disappears. The target is right at the tip of the coil. Dig a small plug and bam, there it is. Makes for a quick target recovery.
Wow- Luis Villarreal that’s a great tip! Thanks!!
@@luisvillarreal5262, wow! Thanks for the tip!
Mark, is there a special video you can watch about making your own programs for the Nox? I just got mine and have been learning all I can. Thanks.
As i had been told the eqanox 800 was pretty good.
Your detector will have the latest update if you bought it new. The Equinox is a very easy machine to use, watch these videos starting with the getting started videos and it will help you learn the machine. ua-cam.com/play/PLjrtO2dCo3KHkjtqTrlcCWu4Q6OpFeyIL.html
Remember this update was for soil in Asia not USA soil it’s an extra frequency to use on silver
Here is the verbiage from the v3 update document.
A new Single Frequency of 4 kHz has been
added to the existing 5, 10, 15, 20 and
40 kHz options. This new 4 kHz frequency
enhances the detection of large deep
targets, particularly those found in parts
of Asia. As a result of optimising for
these conditions, this new frequency may
respond differently for users compared
to the other single frequencies.
All other single and multi-frequency
settings are unchanged in
their performance.
In addition to the 4 kHz upgrade feature,
various stability enhancements have
been included.
the update seems to make the machine over sensitive it just won't lock onto a target like it did before and the 4 khz says every target is in the 30-39 range nails, bottle caps, pull tabs ,etc I'm new to the nox so some of this could be me, but it worked fine before the update thanks
I just bought my 800 and I haven’t done any software upgrades yet just trying to learn this thing first.
Good idea.
Wasnt this not ment to be? I readed a statement of ML that the new 4 khz mode was for a certain type of hunting, i thought it was Asia and war stuff... But they also stated that the new 4khz operates much different compared to the other frequency's and due to that you had to get the feel with it.
I've updated mine but I haven't tried it out as of yet. I'm waiting for a little cooler weather!
Thanks for testing this out , Don,,,,,,,,,,,
Thanks for watching Don.
I updated and tried 4 khz. I noticed that pulltabs and other aluminum always rang up very high so.....don't like it. My question is then what other changes were done, if any, in the version 3?
Hey bud what did you finally on that 3.0 update? Mine hasn't got a single update so where should I stop on them or get all for good results?
I run 2.0
@SodBustersMetalDetecting aah. Good information. Thanks
I wish ML would have used a number for target depth like the Anfibio Multi from Nokta/Makro has. I think I will do a factory reset on my 600 (I have already applied the 3.1.3).
Hi,is the update already on an new detector bought april 27 this year
No I don't believe it is
I own an 800..... So what did the Update, Update??
Larry, I bought my 800 a couple of weeks ago in March of 2021. Would my 800 have the new update because mine has been acting the same way I get a signal and then its gone erratic number changes and depths are way off. I hunt with my son who has the Gold Monster 1000 and has picked up many more signals. I'm disappointed in the performance of the 800 to much technology in a small package they should have kept it simple.
Steve, follow this videos instructions as if you are going to do an update to see what version is on your machine ua-cam.com/video/VmJ_OJO3InQ/v-deo.html
If you do have the 3.0 you can revert back to 2.0
If you need to change your version watch this ua-cam.com/video/3ZUC-kyP7mE/v-deo.html
I'll check thank you Larry. One more think I forgot to ask you in some of your setup video's on the 800 you mentioned about a book by Andy Sabisch that would help with setups etc. but there's a blue version and a yellow version which one would you recommend or is one an updated version for the 3.0.
I have the yellow version personally
Great hunt, congrats on the great finds including that large
If that suits you no problem for me ... good hunting
I was on 1.7.5 version before the update and I liked that much better , I will be switching back to my old version , it seems to me that they have nulled the machine down to gain the extra stability , there is allways a trade off , field 2 mode on version 3.0 is like field 1 mode on version 1.7.5 if you get me , no good to me
I'm in the 2.0 version which I havent made my mind up on yet
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting I think the 1.7.5 version is great the only reason I was curious to change it is because when I'm running field 2 if I bang the coil on something slightly when swinging it will make a tone which can get abit annoying but I will take that over the nulled down 3.0
Nice work!
Thank you
Detecting rookie here... what is the advantage of say using a single freq. like 4 over just leaving it in multi? Does multi use all the available frequencies?
Yes multi utilizes all frequencies. I dont use the update which has 4 KHZ but it is meant for deeper large targets from what I understand. It is optimal to hunt in multi
I’m getting some of the same results with the 4 khz but like you said I’m still messing around with it but prefer multi
Its highly mineralized, very alkaline, and hard packed especially when you get down beyond 3-4 inches I guess the way to tell if its got the 3.0 update is to see if its got the 4 khz setting. Mine does not, so it was not preset at the factory on the new machines. One last question. How can you tell when you need to recharge the battery? Thanks again for the informative videos.
Any comments on a coil tab stiffener? I noticed you had one in another video.
What would you like to know?
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting Is it something I should have on my detector.
@@floydburkett630 it wouldn't hurt but the main thing is be sure the rubber washers aren't worn and don't overnighten the bolt
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting Got it. I went back and looked and ordered the one you were using. In the same red color too. I just watched the 1870 ranch. Neat. I’m just wondering what would be the benefit of hunting in megahertz over multi modal mode?
Some people prefer single frequency in certain situations such as gold nugget hunting or if emi is too much in multi but in most cases muli is the way to go
Nice to see another female treasure hunter :)
Would you say the 3.0 update gives a more accurate pinpoint? Also, I’ve heard the 4Khz is better on silver & larger targets.
Mike I talk about that and show my experience of this in The video. Please watch it so you know what I found with the update
Ok. Must have missed those comments. Will watch again. Thanks
Hi from France...Try that!!!... ... for V3 : Setting- Mode: Park 1, speed 6, Sensitivity 25, Iron Bias F2 4, Freq Multi or 4 Khz... ...try end tell me...best regard's.
Thank you, I ended up restoring back to the previous update. Thank you for the tip though I appreciate it
Did they fix V3?
I purchased the 800 two weeks ago. I have looked for the update by running the update software on my machine and the 3.0 doesn't seem to be available. It tells me my software is up to date and my current version is 2.1.12. Do you know if this update has been removed?
I havent heard, I did hear that minelab stated that the 3.0 update did have some issues so it is possible they removed it until they resolve it.
@@SodBustersMetalDetecting I contacted Minelab. They suggested I uninstall the update utility and reinstall through the link they gave me. After doing this I was able to do the update. It would appear that my original version was corrupt.
I think corrupt updates have been common with it.
Nice video very clear!
Thank you Kim
Larry what is the purpose of switching from multi frequency to 4 kg hertz?
I was just comparing differences between the 2 modes.
Thanks- I see...but I wonder what the 4khz setting actually does. I’m very intrigued by the guy who commented that when he goes to the beach when he switches back-and-forth if the reading changes it’s always trash. So I can see that the setting would be useful for that👍. GREAT VIDEO...
It is supposed to be better on larger deeper targets
Interesting findings. Haven’t updated yet.
Thank you for watching. This was only a test on the update but hope to have some good hunts coming soon.
I look forward to it!
Thanks for the info, i see that you are walking with a very low sensitivity. That is why you only get the shallow targets

I always use multi frequency unless the emi interference won't allow it.
Was the update done by Microsoft...lol j/k Great video as always. thank you!
Lol thanks my friend
Starr Lucas that's hilarious 😂 it's a microshaft update!
Seems different frequencies send the signals at different widths? Maybe the reason the location is a tad different?
It's hard to say at this pont
A friend of mine was telling me that to let the new update settle in you need to factory preset. Is this true and could it be what part of the problem was ?
That was not my experience. I did a factory preset afterwards and still had issues which led me to restoring back to the 2.0
@S K yes the 2.0

The anti bottle caps feature works best if the iron horse shoe is turned on.
Thanks for the tip George and thanks for watching
No disrespect but don’t think you are using the 4khz in the way it’s intended and to keep comparing it to the multi frequency is wrong. Very low frequencies are meant for deeper large objects and preferably with a large coil, as it penetrates deeper. Not meant for small shallow objects
Perhaps but the upgrade itself effected even the multi and the pinpointing features. There were too many negative factors to keep the upgrade.

I don't think there is a machine out there whose depth indicator is accurate due to the various metals and conditions of soil
Big FACTS’!!!!
This is interesting
@@kansasrelicsandrecovery I tell you what, I live in the United States. So it was not an improvement for me. I dont have any Chinese silver hoards
buried in the ground in upstate New York. In my opinion Multi Frequency is still king. I have heard of others that are
just using the 4 Khz as a cross reference to multi frequency targets, but it really has not improved my detecting one bit.
4 KHZ HAS NOT PULLED 1 COIN OUT OF ANY AREA I HAVE ALREADY POUNDED WITH MULTI FREQUENCY BEFORE AND AFTER THE UPDATE.
So I really dont understand this MASSIVE PHENOMENA of people claiming that they are finding all these silver coins in places that
they have hunted before when it has been absolutely untrue for me and im digging in a 220 year old neighborhood with a
Militia Training ground ( which is now the part of 2 of the public parks) Which is about the size of 3 Football fields. I have repeatidly
pounded these areas before and after the update and not 1 silver coin has been found using 4 khz. NOT ONE! Youd be lucky to get
any deep can slaw that i was too lazy to dig. I truly doubt the majority of these people are using their machines properly
and they may even be getting lucky by digging up trash and unmasking targets, but this update is not doing anything for people that have
been using this machine for almost 3 years and REALLY know how to use it. Its just not possible.
You won't find any gold with all those blocked. Gold rings and such typically VDI from 9 to 22.
