Facts. I did Mounjuro for 9 months, lost 60 pounds while also going vegan as the med impacted my feelings strongly about eating animals and then a constant plateau 50 pounds from a Healthy bmi. So, I stopped the med and found that I had changed my eating habits and beliefs after educating myself about the treatment of animals, but had to stop the vegan junk food completely to keep losing. Finally losing again without the med and without harming animals still.

I was a junk food vegan (struggling with binge-eating) and my doctor recommended a similar product (Saxenda) back in 2021. I read the possible side-effects - like pancreatic cancer - and became too scared to try it. 3 years later and I'm 75lbs down naturally with a WFPB diet and working on my food addiction. Taking care of the underlying cause will hopefully help to maintain this healthy weight, long-term 🤞🏻 But it's an ongoing fight.

I went from obese to a normal weight (I lost 36KG), when I went vegan for ethical reasons, I also reversed the heart disease, type 2 diabetes & hypertension I was suffering from. I'm now totally medication free & at 52, I'm the fittest & healthiest I've ever been in my life. Diet should always be the first choice, before any other intervention is considered.

Same here. Keto carnivore doesn't work long term.on forums so many carnis are complaining about high fasting glucose due to high protein and Their solution?? Eat more sticks of butter and less meat. 😂😂

Personally I wouldn't go cold turkey immediately, as that is going to fuck up with your cravings.
But learning how to cook, eating beans/brown pasta/brown rice as your carb source instead of more processed stuff is a good start.
It's not going to taste as good, but most people are essentially rewiring their brain, so it makes sense.

I was on Ozempic for an entire year, and lost 6 whole pounds. (Real Ozempic....not compounded) I was eating about 1400 cal per day, my stomach and bowels would not clear anything. It took five days for food I ate to come out. I finally stopped taking it, because I was afraid I'd have permanent gastroparisis. I stopped in April. I'm about 80% back to normal for that.
This is fantastic interview! Knowledge is power, having knowledge give people the ability to control situations, essentially granting you power over those who lack that knowledge.

Anecdotally a cyclist was on a recent podcast, who had a history with their excess weight( always hungry) found that when they went on ozempic, it seemed to interfere with their training and all their rides felt extremely hard and uncomfortable. They weren't sure why, but felt it seemed to interfere with normal fat and carb burning pathways while exercising? As they fueled normally during the rides so didn't think it was just because of a calorie deficit caused by the drug. He lost the weight quite easily, but found he hated training when on it so gave up. After going off it, everything returned to normal regarding training and energy levels. Quite interesting.

Sounds to me like the current consensus about the GLP1 agonists is that after one stops taking it and they lose the artificial appetite suppression it's possible/likely that they will go back to their old eating habits and can regain the weight.

Edit: after all of that I forgot the most important part, today I have stayed a consistent healthy weight.
I went vegan in 2020, and had lost weight... however
I had/have Ulcerative Colitis/Crohn's disease. In late 2022/2023 I rapidly lost weight(as a vegan) but I was also dying from a condition that I had prior to even being vegetarian. I was diagnosed with crohn's at least since 2016 though I had symptoms earlier. Anyway, in 2023 I spent two months in the hospital, a couple days in the ICU, anemic from blood loss, rapid weight loss(to put it into perspective, I would throw up from drinking water and eating saltines... when I was first admitted into the ER I had a white blood cell count of over 65k.) I don't say this lightly, the staff and surgeons were incredible. I also had something called a "superinfection" which I'm not going to pretend to understand. The shock of losing my colon and having a giant scar and a bag wore off pretty quickly when my symptoms for the most part were gone and I was grateful to be alive. Also, the person who was my gastroenterologist years prior to hospital stay was a joke.(he actually recommended a medicine when I was in the hospital...that could have killed me. The colon needed to go, and he was essentially giving me a Flintstones vitamin for a gangrenous wound. I had bleeding and severe symptoms 1-2 years prior to going to the hospital... after severe symptoms and routine checkups leading absolutely nowhere, I went to the ER. Then I went from one hospital to the next until I was airlifted to the one that helped.) After a year of my bag and after my third surgery, I am here today healthier and happier than I've ever been. Bagless and colonless, with a new perspective on life. I was also vegan on a plant based diet throughout the ordeal. I nearly died and was on TPN but when I could eat and drink(sometimes weeks without) I was on a plant based, and again my staff was INCREDIBLE and cooperative. My main surgeon was there with me every step of the way, recommending protein(silk protein shakes, things like that. he never once questioned my philosophy or diet) and I still check up with him. Needless to say I am grateful to have such care. I did unfortunately run into some nurses/nutritionists that recommended things like eggs but I just sort of smiled and nodded because I know the truth not only about nutrition value of things like eggs but the harsh reality of the egg industry. I could go on and on, but I won't. I will conclude with this, I'm grateful for the hospital staff, and I'm grateful for a second chance at life.
Tl;dr my rapid weight loss was contributed to my poor health deteriorating over time, not veganism/plant based diet, if anything it saved my life.
I’m on tirzepatide, and it’s been a godsend to me. (I was on Ozempic to begin with and had terrible side effects so I had to stop.) Anyway, I tried to eat plant based several times over the course of 4 years, but my weight just kept going up, and I was so dang hungry. Now that I’m on a glp-1, I’ve lost 22 pounds since Sept. 1st.

7:45 You lose muscle when normally dieting without losing the drug too. If you’re lifting weights while using the drug, you’ll lose far less muscle. It’s mainly an issue of not lifting weights to retain that muscle while losing weight. If you normally diet in a massive 1k call deficit, you’ll also lost a ton of muscle if you’re not lifting weights.

WFPB vegan for over 8 years now lost 30lbs initially maintained ever since .. my lipids are perfect my BP is amazing.. get blood test every year and no deficiency whatsoever. A healthy diet and exercise works.. people just want an easy way out..but even on these meds if you don’t put in any work it will still fail, they have their place to save lives but on any meds the point is to get better and get off of it
Dr. Greger is my deity 😊 Thanks to him (plus the other good doctors) I cured myself from fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis back in 2013. Now I’m 63 and feel better than I did at 50. And if I’m to believe people, look like I’m in my late 40s 😂

For most of us, the initial transition to WFPB diet is difficult. I was constantly eating to feel full because of the low density of a plant-based diet, and the cravings were so strong because the body was fighting to change. A low dose of Ozempic is a great stepping stone to adopting a WFPB!
or just eat peanut butter. peanut butter instead of drugs. Or soycurls. Or seitan. It's not "Whole" but it's better than drugs. This whole "Needs to be 100% whole food" is OCD.

Dr G mentioned groats, but apparently several different whole grains qualify as groats. Did he have something particular in mind?
Dr G refers to oat groats in many videos. I can’t find them in any store, though.
Allulose is supposed to do the same thing.
Daily Dozen app and Dr Greger's weight accelerators works. Have to cut out ultra processed foods and eating out for at least 6 months onwards. It's not possible to never eat out (family, holidays, trips) but have to at least be strict and choose wisely. My husband is a dessert lover but fortunately hardly any are vegan so by not harming animals you're not harming yourself.

How do we put on muscle mass as vegans, besides hitting the heavy weights (or is that absolutely crucial)?
I recently was debating someone on veganism and they told me I looked malnourished in my profile photo here.
I made sure to inform them that photo was from a decade ago, a few years before i became vegan, while i was still running a BBQ.
I've actually put on a few pounds since then, but still could stand to gain a bit more.
I mostly am happy with my fitness, but physically, i think i could have a better effect on my vegan outreach if i didn't look so skinny.
I don't advocate veganism for health so much as for the animals, but i think people's perception still matters and would do whatever i can to make the message stronger
Just hit the weights bro. You don't even have to do a lot like some gym bros would have you believe. If you hit full body once a week (and you pushed your sets close to failure and didn't bitch out) then you will absolutely 100% build great muscle that way. If you're trying to get truly jacked, once a week probably isn't enough, but if you're just trying to not be skinny, that's more than enough.
By now, as most people are overweight or obese, we have problems to recognize healthy. More muscle mass is often called hypertrophy, it's there more for looks than function, like hauling sixteen tons every day.
@@cremedelamemesupreme1649 It'll take at least twice a week to keep muscle protein synthesis going, and I would suggest 3x week to keep the soreness at bay.

Great to watch this, thanks. Two of my favourite UA-camrs. Interesting about vinegar: I don't recall Dr. Greger discussing this in the context of this book elsewhere like on the Exam Room Podcast. I'd known of vinegar slowing absorption and impacting glycaemic index but I thought that was due to the effect on ph, and the lemon juice i have with meals would also accomplish that. The groats and thyllacoids (spelling?), of course important points, were mentioned before as well.
I like the amusing parts of the video, too. I was overweight, BMI about 24.8 or 24.9 decades ago and never want to be that again. Incidentally, here in India dals - lentils and split legumes - are often though not always consumed without the skin. For many years I had only entire legumes but for a year or more now I make an exception for pigeon peas: the skinless split ones are called arhar ki dal, or tuvar, thoo-ar, tur, toor dal. (The sambhar very widely consumed in the south, a delicious soup with vegetables and popular across the country served with idli, dosa, vada or boiled rice, is made from this and the pulse is there called tuvaram parippu.) And I've also started making idli with crushed white rice and crushed urad ki dal, split black gram (small black beans) without the skin. My indulgences. 🙂
It seems to me that not enough stress is laid, even in UA-cam videos internationally, on consuming pulses/legumes entire: not split in half, and not without the skin. For example the common pink lentils seen in videos are easily available with the brown skin, which is how I cook and eat them. The skin doesn't affect the cooking time, not much anyway. Not all that big an issue but why not grab all the fibre which we can easily get.

Facts. Low fat plant based for twenty years. Heart failure, from flu. CRT-D. Diabetes great control but never able to give up meds. Ozempic? Brought me out of the fog I’d been in for eight years, HBa1c best in forever. HBa1c improving when I couldn’t do it on my own. Sick to death of the negativity of Dr Greger. His stuff doesn’t work for absolutely everyone. He’s dangerously evangelical. Always with the worst interpretations of everything that isn’t food. And we’re smart enough to balance the risk against the benefits. So damned tired of the lecturing. And in still low fat plant based. Losing weight slowly and steadily. No one here would be game to state reality.
Wonderful that Dr Greger communicates with the "smaller fish" in the nutrition-sphere. That is how one makes the world a better place. In small ways.

I truly enjoyed this. I'm wondering if ive ever heard Dr. Gregor speak. I was surprised by all this character. It makes him and his work so much cooler than the pure cool he already is. I especially enjoyed that he said "the way we were designed" because I believe humans were designed with love and do not work in this brilliant way by chance.

Losing weight from obesity is less successful than quiting drinking, smoking, and drug addicts that's also a fact.
Your body fights back- so true!! This is what happens after Sleeve Gastrectomy ( bariatric surgery type) too. I had that 10 years ago and initially I could eat very little due to physical restriction plus the removal of ghrelin (hunger hormone) producing cells which are mainly based in the fundus of the stomach that has been removed. 3 years down the line the hunger and food noise returned and my body was producing ghrelin elsewhere. By this point I could eat larger meals too, but not very large meals so snacking became very attractive again. Cravings for wrong foods are still a massive issue for me and cause me so much misery despite an initial 5 stone weight loss (now 3 stone) and being a normal bmi. I still need hypertension and high cholesterol medications and carry any fat round my waist. I still hate exercise too- I just can't help it, I thought that would change with weight loss and I do do it, but it is never, ever enjoyable and always have to force myself.
You keep blaming your body and not yourself
What you’re experiencing is super difficult so I want to affirm that it’s not your fault. What has helped me is understanding that obesity and overeating (and any other kind of eating disorder) is caused by mental issues. Idk if this will work for you but it did for me so please try it - every time you want to eat really listen to your body - is it hunger or something else. If it doesn’t feel like hunger ask yourself how do I feel rn? I then let out my feelings through journalling/crying/any other way I feel like expressing myself. It took me years to be able to do this in a stable manner. You will fail but you have to get up when you do and keep going. As for exercise, please start small. The ratio of enjoyment to suffering should not surpass 80:20 otherwise you will not sustain it. I started out with yoga and walking, then after about half a year or so I added hot yoga and Pilates, now after four years I go to the gym and lift weights and run and there are still difficult parts of it but I push myself enough without suffering. I see it as a challenge so it’s quite fun now actually. With your food changes, it will feel odd to eat in ways that you never have and you will quit and start again over and over and then you’ll get it. And for me that doesn’t look like perfection- I still eat junk food, but I fuel my body with real whole food 80% or more of the time. You can do this, love, I believe in you.
Find some exercise you like. There has to be something. I love going to the gym and moving heavy stuff and playing basketball/football with my sons. My wife prefers swimming and hiking.
Get this everyone, get this. I’m Kathy, newly 40 years old. When I turned 30, I did this thing, are you ready? I exercised and cleaned up my eating ( went plant based) 😵😵😵😵… and guess what??? I lost weight!! I’m serious. 60 pounds, gone. Dream body achieved, And then…. I’ve kept it off for 10 years…. Shocking right?????

@@barbaraibiel 100% this. Our kids say all the time that we're an "ingredient house". If that means we have no processed junk and only healthy leftovers, then I will own it.
I think generalizability is important. For us lucky few, the science is enough, but I’d argue that we have built in advantages, probably around addictive factors, that play into this. I love food. But I have no compulsions to consume high fat, high sugar foods. I do enjoy them, but occasionally is more than enough. This isn’t a virtue, it’s luck of the draw. I think we need some serious research into what built in differences confer this advantage.

I am taking B12 because presently there is not enough of it in our food supply. If everyone was vegan, our food supply would be designed to fulfill the nutritional needs of vegans. And I take D3 because I avoid the sun.

Vitamin C, thing is your body doesn't need much while on a meat based diet because meat is virtually non-inflamatory you don't need antioxidants, most of which protects plants from the toxins it produces to ward of being eaten.

Why not? They don’t eat enough to maintain the muscle. It’s normal to lose muscle from undereating
@mamenamamena did you watch the video? He said ozempic lead to more lean mass loss than calorie restriction on its own. I was wondering how that could be.
It takes intense resistance exercise to not lose muscle mass in a calorie deficit. You have to convince your body that it's needed for survival or off it goes.

Because the who idea of normal amount? I read the idea is it reduces your appetite, so if you don’t reduce intake & your body feels full, of course you will vomit…

This is so offensive, I hardly have words to counter it. I will put my story in a comment of its own, but I have done EVERYTHING from vegetarian for 4 decades, vegan for most of those years, 50+ diets and programs, Fen-Phen, an RNY Gastric Bypass, exercising to the point of passing out, and more. I "obviously don't want to actually do anything?" Come live my life at 400 lbs. for a day, then come tell me why I want a MEDICATION, not a "magic drug," to save my life. Health at _ANY_ Cost. I will do ANYTHING to stay alive. Until now, at 63 years old, _nothing_ has worked. I work my ass off with these medications. They do not just work like a magic wand. Just because _you_ don't have these issues or need these meds does not mean that many others, myself included, don't need them to crawl out of a hole of hell with food and extreme illness. I would _never_ tell you what to do with your life and health. Remember, I am a real person with real issues you know nothing about.

I obviously generalized in my comment. However I work in healthcare and most people don’t want to change their lifestyle. Even people who use weight loss medication or get bariatric surgery still often continue unhealthy eating habits and most gain weight after the initial few years.
I understand it’s difficult but most don’t even try, not seriously.
@@emilyking9558 I was a midwife and birth worker for 32 years, so I do understand the mindset of a provider who has clients that don't seem to want help. That belief was put on me for decades even as I kept trying and trying to save myself. I now know, it was not for lack of trying, but a lack of the proper amount of hormones in my intestinal tract and brain. Amazingly, I now have an endless supply of compliance to proper food choices, the gleeful desire to move my body and grow muscles through hard work, and it is all the result of the GLP-1 medications.

Minute 24… I think he means 1 in 100 get to normal weight the old fashioned way, diet and exercise. It appears to me the drug assisted success is much higher. It would take a front line doctor like Dr. Tyna Moore, to clarify this.
People keep looking for the easy button despite that being a consistently terrible way to make decisions. Example after example of seeking easy comfort being a self-destructive approach to life. Discomfort makes you strong and more capable of feeling joy. Seeking fast dopamine spikes makes you weak and soft and incapable of tolerating anything or feeling joy. Exercise, sensible amounts of fasting, cold exposure, do nothing and sit with the feeling of restless boeredom to let it guide you to passionate interests, all sorts of ways to bring healthy discomfort into your life.

This stuff is working. All the people I see at the Costco on the nice end of town are now trim, where roughly 40% were obese 2 years ago.
Ineffective after a year? They still look thin to me. Some large percentage get side effects? So, why are there no fat people. I guess the others died of COVID, or are cowering in shame at home?
What are his standards of "normal" weight? You do know right at the cutoff between normal and overweight, 25% fat for men and 35% fat for women, is actually the lowest all-cause mortality? All the rest is just social--cultural nonsense...or athletes being athletes.

@@sandytw5229 I'm with you. I was a big Gregor fan but what I've learned lately is that some of our biggest heroes can take peculiar pivots toward establishment positions. My take away is to scrutinize everything including info from people we trust.
