Vicki Lawrence gave a lengthy interview where she covered that day on the set. There had been a pre-rehearsal meeting and Carol wanted everybody acting right so they could get their takes on time. There was a full set dress rehearsal and Tim told a story about an elephant with a dwarf trainer and after the meeting earlier it was Carol who could not keep it straight. Then there was a break where you could eat something and do last minute prep before the take, and this is when the director came in and gave them scene notes. Vicki knew exactly what Tim was doing... The director came in with set notes and said the elephant joke was changed. Tim had rehearsed with the elephant and the dwarf, but for the take they changed the joke to the siamese elephants... Vicki had already decided before she stepped on the set for that take to get Tim.

It will live on forever as an example of just how bloody brilliant and genuinely originally funny these folks were. He produced more lethally funny moments than anyone else I can think of.
@@krathoon2338 Yup. I saw them talk about this scene on a reunion show. Anyway, Carol was saying how she and Vicki were talking about they were getting tired of it and they had to stay in character, no matter what he tried. I think Tim was expecting one of them to do something, but I don't think he was thinking Vickie would be the one to cut loose. And what she said was hilarious, she never broke character either.
Tim was on Johnny Carson one night and said that he and Harvey Korman had a running bet as to who would crack the other up. Carson asked, "Who came out on top?" Tim said, "Korman put my kids through college."

Vicki L was getting her legs under her when she was urged before the show to just go for it and show her stuff to the others - and given this golden opportunity she absolutely floored them.

Yeah, 4.5k dislikes is insane. Shocked me. And yeah, politics sucks...but patriot 1018 is probably right. The word "dwarf" was used, after all. The fact that it was the accepted term at the time is irrelevant. They`re all evil. And the clip(One of the greatest comedy skits of all time) should be destroyed because of it. Ah, rewriting history to suit your beliefs...what could possibly go wrong?
ger traba he said in an interview that during the dentist skit, you could see that Harvey laughed so hard he wet his pants! 😂 You’re in good company! Now they’re back together...probably laughing! ❤️
Carol Burnett, Harvey Corman and and Tim Conway, the best comedy Trio Ever... This was my childhood right here... my mom, dad and I would sit around the TV on a Saturday night and watch the Carol Burnett show... Best time of our lives
You can tell Carol is loving it as much as the audience is. She had many chances to start the dialogue again and get on with the sketch, but she just let Tim keep doing his thing, knowing he was spouting out comedy gold. This cast worked so great together! 😂😂😂
Remember the show he did in the 90s? Tim Conway's America. Was in Michigan once and in the opener he said something about the mosquitos up there and a city bus drove by behind the camera and he just turned his head to follow it and muttered, "there goes a big one."
He could say the most outrageous things and usually keep his composure while everyone else was trying not to die. That was (is) the legendary Tim Conway, and yet he was just one bright light in what is arguably THE best comedy troupe to ever perform on primetime TV in the United States on the Carol Burnett Show...
Tim's delivery here was perfect. He waited the perfect amount of time to continue the story, just when they thought he was finished he added more, genius.
that's what is so fascinating...Tim had perfect timing, but the other cast members did also. You could see Tim biding his time to deliver, and the others trying to wait for the laughter to finish, compose themselves, and get the lines in before Tim could continue. Tim was just a quarter second quicker...
Tim Conway had a profound way of improvising as he went along with a skit, and as Carol Burnett once related, he rarely stayed on script. He had masterful comedic timing and it was always appreciated when he would catch his cast mates off guard and prompt them to burst out in laughter with the rest of us. He was a rare talent.
Trying to avoid laughing at what he "actually" says is hard enough. I can also imagine thinking and worrying, while already failing to desperately struggle to stay in character, that "this is Tim Conway - what is this man going to put me through by saying next?"
There are a couple of times when Carol looks at Tim and to me looks angry. Would have liked to join them after the sketch to see how they dealt with it off camera.
@@potdragon8091 Well its not obvious as you imply....If you know nothing of the show you probably wouldn't know that was improvised as most of her show was scripted. The years its been posted and its views has no relevance.
Poor Harvey Korman. I say that with love and affection. Just watching him trying to contain himself with Tim Conway --- waiting for that moment when he just couldn’t take it. It must have been a real challenge for Harvey Korman to keep a straight face. I have no doubt Harvey and Tim are hamming it up in Heaven.
I watched an interview with Carol. She said Tim constantly went off script during taping. The shock, horror, and destruction you see on their faces was real. They never knew what was coming out of his mouth next. Best comedy show of all time.
I saw an interview with Vicki Lawrence Schultz and she said that while normally they'd know in advance most of what would happen in a skit, in this one some changes were made and all they were told was "The elephant story will be different." Their reaction on stage was their first time hearing it.
Frito you are correct. Vicki did an interview where she was only told the elephant story would be different. Her husband told her to "get him" referring to Tim Conway.
This clip needs to be preserved in the archives of the National Comedy Center for it's sheer comedic brilliance. Thank you Mr. Conway for the decades of laughs, may you now rest easy!!
@@fuckcancer8679 Tim was notorious at trying to get the others to crack during tapings... Vicki's manager/husband told her before this set "Let him have it." So she did... ua-cam.com/video/aA7bxTc0AJw/v-deo.html
The backstory and behind the scenes of this make this incredible. Carol was told before this part of the taping that "there were some changes to the elephant sketch and good luck!" They all start and Vicki was actually mad that Carol didn't say something to stop Tim. Then she leveled all of them with a perfectly timed and improvised line. Legendary forever.
@@lessen518I think she says something like, “You sure that little ahole’s through?” Tim set the whole thing up but I feel like it was Vicki’s line that cemented that scene’s place in television history. 😉😁
Oh my Lord! I’m in tears right now. Tim Conway has to have one of the best comedic timing of any person I’ve ever seen. This makes me laugh hysterically every time I see it!
Conway's timing is masterful and his low-key matter-of-fact delivery just slays. Vicky got the punch line though - even Tim fell out. Comedy at it's best, i was so lucky to have had this show as a kid in the 70s and it's still just as funny!
There is a backstory to this according to Vicky Lawrence. She was forewarned by Carol Burnett that Conway had this story cooked up. Vicky was often the butt of Conway’s shenanigans. While Vicky was in makeup, her makeup artist told her to “Go get him” and she did. The “asshole” comment was omitted from the CBS broadcast, but the clip was repeated uncensored a number of times. Lawrence said the residuals from those clips on Dick Clark and other shows paid her a fortune.
Tim Conway was MERCILESS. Half the fun of The Carol Burnett Show was watching him make the other actors bust their guts. He's the best sketch comic of ALL TIME.
+Mark Marsh Anytime you see Carol turn away from the camera it was so she could cover up the fact she was laughing, she wanted to keep the show as "live" as possible even though it was taped
+Mark Marsh I guess they'd do each scene twice. Tim would play it straight on the first run thru, then the second where they were recording, he'd cut loose.
50 years already... good god it's frightening... My family never missed the show, we were in tears we laughed so much... Good times the 70s, I'd go back in a second... Best TV, best music...
I've heard that a lot of his stuff came off the top of his head, winging it if you will. With as much joy and laughter he brought to the world I'm sure he's winging it in heaven!
That's no joke, I had tears in my eyes from laughing. Tim Conway was known for doing this, trying to get cast members to laugh during performances. From what people said he was absolutely hilarious in person as well.
It blows my mind that Tim had all of them and the entire audience in the palm of his hand for an amazing amount of time, and Vicki totally brought the scene down in seconds without breaking character. Literal legends sparring on a couch. Take notes kids!
How she kept a straight face it's beyond me! I would've been rolling on the floor. What was so great about Carol's shows & others is the whole family could watch. Still watch reruns.
@@sha11235 agree. I only watched the original cast of SNL but wouldn't have shared with young children. Shows like Carol's were appropriate for all age groups. I don't watch modern shows. We also grew up watching comedians like Red Skelton. One New Years Eve when my son was around 11 we watched him on HBO & my son loved it! No cussing or vulgarity but hilarious laughter. Carol's show especially with Tim Conway added more humor without cussing, sexual innuendos, violence. We understood the difference between slapstick humor & vulgarity. I am so appreciative of the reruns because there is none worth watching today.
It's hilarious, not necessarily because of the elephant stories (though his imitation of what an elephant whose trunk was attached to another would sound like), but it is the exquisite timing that makes it so much funnier. He knew EXACTLY how long to wait before adding the next line. Just when we (and his fellow actors) thought he was finished, out would come another line.
The backstory on this skit is amazing. The first elephant story was for the daytime show and Tim changed it up on the cast for the Nighttime show. So, that's why Carol just lowered her head cuz she knew something was coming that they weren't gonna be able to handle. It's amazing.
@@Jaque1961 Not sure how you missed what was said. They had rehearsals in the daytime, which they let an audience in for. The show itself was filmed at night. They ran two "shows", they only aired one of them.
What made this so funny was Tim Conway's perfect timing. He'd tell a bit of the story, crack up the cast, let them get themselves together, and just when it seemed like the skit would get back on track, he'd start the story again. Beautiful.
Unfortunately, this type of comedy and improv is lost, never to return. Every time I watch this, it's like I'm watching for the first time. Tim Conway is truly a master at the art of comedy.

@@lukehunter6922 Yes....she was new. What she said was a little out of character for any of them but she made Tim Conway and Dick Van Dyke fall in the floor laughing out of control..... awesome..
What makes this bit so enjoyable is you can see that Tim Conway had them hostage with the first few lines and never gave in until his fellow cast members were beyond themselves. Vicki's remark at the end was purely icing on the cake. I think the "Dentist" sketch with Tim and Harvey is almost equal to this bit.
I loved the way Vicki Lawrence (mostly) stayed in character while the others fell apart. When Dick Van Dyke got back up he looked like he was trying not to pee in his pants. 😂

@kingy002. That was perfect timing.
I loved the way Vicki Lawrence (mostly) stayed in character while the others fell apart. When Dick Van Dyke got back up he looked like he was trying not to pee in his pants. 😂
@@redcybra Oh yeah
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy have reunited. RIP Tim Conway.
I've watched this dozens of times and it still makes me laugh to the point of tears. Tim Conway's timing is perfect.
Yup.. Same here. Laughter 'til tears Every time. Burnett's glaring at him at that one point, basically daring him to continue, cracks me up as much as all of 'em laughing helplessly through the rest of his ad lib
I cannot get tired of watching this, it always puts a smile on my face.🤣🤣🤣
True, but Vicky Lawrence had the final punchline. 😂
Fenorck! 😂
Yes,Scott you are right
That whole show was real television. We sure miss those days. RIP Tim Conway.
@june....I loved Eunice. I had a cousin that talked just like her. she reminds me of her so much.
I watch this at least once a month. For years. It's July, 2024. Always makes my day end with a laugh.
I remember watching this as a kid w my mom..I'd chuckle here n ther whenever my mom was busting up w laughter not totally understanding why she'd laugh so much...I come back here at least once a week now..❤❤😂
I been to Tim's house. First time I met him I told him, "I'm your biggest fan".... he just deadpanned me and said "oh, you're the guy?". He was always on. Always hilarious. Will be missed...
