Well put, and may I just add that Dean very consciously adopted the drunk act, inspired by Joe E Lewis, when he started his Vegas show in 1957, in an effort to create a persona distinct from his Martin and Lewis days. He could not have had his unparalleled comic timing if he had really been drunk. Read his son and daughter's books - they both say he drank very moderately.
If there is a Haven, I can see Frank, Dean, Don, Carson...whole that generation, in a steaming salon, drinking, laughing and being what they were in life - unique and unrepeatable.
And to make matters worst they have been replaced by the scourge of the earth who claim to be actors and comedians. When these people passed, talent and true artistry went with them! They are truly missed!
This was considered a milestone in Rickles' career and as a result his bookings in Las Vegas and he got booked on every television and variety show, and it's not even included on "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project".
The funny thing is, it's those types of audiences Don would stand in front of and say one of his funniest lines; "As I look around the audience tonight it becomes clear to me that, except for Clint Eastwood, I'm the biggest star here. Now Clint's happy that I mentioned his name".
The room was filled with the who's-who of yesteryear, a time when Hollywood had real class and endless style. The movie stars and singers were the veritable gods and goddesses of their time. They each commanded the respect they deserved. Now, Hollywood is an empty shell of itself.
Man, what an audience. A truly golden era of entertainment and talent. I might be a little biased but I look around today at our entertainers and all I can think is please, somebody build a fucking time machine. At least we have UA-cam and kind people who share these gems with us.

Back in the eighties I went to LA on a business trip. To get away for an afternoon we went and saw a Bob Hope Super Bowl special. They filmed it in the same building that they filmed Johnny Carson. Don Rickles was a guest on the show. They would do a skit and then they'd spend 30 minutes resetting for the next skit. Rickels stayed out in the audience the whole time during set changes and made everybody crack up. I mean in person live funniest thing I've ever been to.
What a talent! They just don't make'em like Rickles anymore. True comedy, great era. This world today is way too PC to appreciate his genius...To bad. Great talent!!
People that are drunk forget lines and are a mess! I did theatre and at the end of the season we did a scene from every play that year, while I was waiting for our scene I drank many jack and cokes and was tanked by the time we were up, I only had a few lines but was scared to death! Luckily I didn't slur or flub anything! It is a testament to Deans skill and timing as an actor that people believed he was drunk!
Back when we all had a sense of humor and got along. We understood that this was joking. The PC police have ruined our society (the left) but I still have my memories and these wonderful old clips to enjoy....thank you!
Early in his career. Top stars, real stars. Would contact nightclubs (notably, like the ones in Vegas.) And, request front row seats. So, they could get called out by Rickles. For the instant recognition. He was a magnet.
I looked for this bit! But there was a longer version. Can someone tell me when this was recorded or on what occasion? It would make it easier to search for it.
it only shows how great actor he was, people think he was drunk but that's not true :) ha ha I made the same mistake but when I read a bit of his biography I found out it was just an act, very specific image ;) Dean was brilliant

At the beginning the shot of all those huge huge stars -- wow, all in the audience. Amazing!
