I'm constantly amazed how Alex shares so many facts so naturally.
How many takes do you suppose it takes him? In any case BY FAR my favorite automotive reviewer.
That's why Alex is the GOAT car reviewer. Only facts and no bs theatrics
Maybe Fox should hire him...
I’ve watched a lot of videos on different car channels on UA-cam, I firmly believe Alex is the best. Confident, good taste with no drama, bad jokes or flashy editing.
Plus he is doing all that while behind the wheel, now that's no easy feat.
Alex speaks my language. For someone that drives roughly 20 Miles a day, that wants some great driving dynamic and a good luxury vehicle value proposition, this is a no brainer. Snatched a well equipped one for less than 50K Canadian dollars including incentives. The S60 PHEV is very nice, but is it worth 17000 more? Never.
From what I've heard from buyers is that the car should be left in hybrid mode and charged every night. With this way of thinking you get 50MPG commuting, (for reference this allows a Prius Prime to get 75MPG). If you travel 100 miles from fully charged you spend two gallons and use up the available 9 kWh in the 12 kWh battery pack. The total cost to go 100 miles and properly utilize the vehicle will be the cost of two gallons of 93 octane and the states rate for 12 kWh. Premium Fuel is $3.52 a gallon and a kWh is 13 cents. The fueling costs for me would total 3.52(2) + .13(12) = $7.04 + $1.56. If you didn't have the hybrid system you would be looking at using three gallons of gasoline and would cost you an extra $2.00 per 100 miles. With 15,000 miles a year you would save only $300 and deal with the added long term service complexity. The vehicle is only worth it because the US Government will subsidize $7,500 for the new purchase and $4000 for the used purchase. The US is very keen on switching from gasoline and oil to nationally sourced natural gas while helping the rich get richer.
I have the BMW 530e. I love it. I am retired so I don't drive a lot. Bought it in mid December 2020 and I have under 2,000 miles. I put gas in on December 30, 2020. That was after a long trip. No gas since then. Averaging 90mpg (that is as high as it displays so guessing actually more).
You might wanna cycle the gas out just so it doesn't begin to break down, or add some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank.
@@james2042 The engine fires up every now and then. And I use premium. And, living in Florida might help as well. But I will keep what you said in mind.
@@sporla3 driving the car will get the gas to slosh around a little which will also help a bit, even if the gas motor is off
How has the maintenance been? There’s a lot of 2018 530e on the markets right now
@@jasonandoy4740 No maintenance yet. This is my 3rd BMW. I take it in once a year for free maintenance. Remember, I have a 2021 so I don't expect any maintenance yet
Alex is amazing. How can a human being drop facts so naturally with so few words?
I would get the 330e. This is the most comprehensive review! My only hesitation would be high BMW maintenance and repair costs versus Asian imports.
I love BMW and currently own one. The only thing that scares me is the added complexity of a hybrid system on top of everything else. If BMW had Toyota reliability -- I wouldn't hesitate. But BMW has BMW reliability. lol. Which has improved greatly, but still makes me hesitate when they add complexity.
Yes if BMW could make a dependable car I would have a Mini Cooper convertible.
I owned a 2009 Mini Cooper S. I loved it for several years until it had repeated timing chain issues that cost a fortune to repair. It only made it to 84k miles when I sold it for $900 to a junk yard. BMW wanted $4500 to fix it, KBB value for the car was around 5k. Never again.
@@texasatan that early r56 had many problems they later fixed those in 11-13 models, but I agree
@@philipstewart1141We had a base Mini Cooper, and made the mistake of buying it out after the lease. It started to have miscellaneous issues that cost always cost a lot to repair, then it developed an appetite for oil. It would burn a litre of synthetic every 1500km or so. IMO, the base Cooper didn't have enough of the fun factor to justify the high maintenance cost. The Cooper S, on the other hand, was a hoot to drive.
Great video! The “3” series does have a more friendly looking grill than the “4” series that looks more like a car’s than one on a garbage truck!
Then buy it in black like how I tell you to buy it. (And I swear to god, there better not be any chrome around the grille when you buy it in black).
Great review. Hugely informative 👌👍
I don't understand the MPG estimates. I've owned my 2023 330e xDrive for less than 3 weeks. I just went on a 112 mile round trip in Hybrid mode. I kept the car in Hybrid mode, and switched on the battery hold when on the highway, and let the car choose when on the local roads. The computer says I used about 1/2 of the electric range and 2.7 gallons of gas. If I subtract the 10 miles I travelled on electric, I still come out with nearly 38 MPG. In no way, was I trying to get good MPG either.
The phev can be the "home office" and/or lunch counter without worrying about fumes, nvh or engine wear from idling. For anyone who works from their car but also wants to drive instead of fly because of pollution or pandemic, it seems like an ideal solution.
Appreciate you going into detail on the lease part. We just recently leased a new 330i XDrive and while we weren’t against the 330e, the leasing part is much less expensive on the 330i.
Would you not save the difference in fuel costs?
@@andrewkennedy9704 no, especially if you’re getting 30 mpg+ on the regular. Unless gas spikes. For me it was like $150-200 a month cheaper lease.
Gas is spiking badly here in New York. I hope it comes down because all of my cars get 12mpg
@@mujjuman Gas is spiking bad in Los Angeles too
@@matthinz242 it’s only gotten worse…
Amazing review! Thank you! ❤🎉
Awesome video. I am buying a 2022 330e next week (6/22) because there is nothing else available. The refreshed 330e with the new curved screen and iDrive 8 comes out next month but I need a car now. The reason to buy this car - Fed Tax Credit and CA HOV sticker imo.
I have a 330e XDrive, I just got it last month. I didn't go for any of the upgrade packages, but I did get metallic paint and leather, so I got it for $41,400 US. I think the dealer was just super happy to have a customer. I really am enjoying it, it's so smooth and quiet.
I like it. Level-1 charging would be fine for me.
I have a 2018 BMW 530e. I average 50 to 60 mpg on a typical tank of gas, since I exclusively use the electric motor for many of my daily errands. The 530e electric range is only 12 miles, so doubling the electric range would further increase my fuel economy. The 530e (hybrid) was cheaper to lease than the 530i (non-hybrid) and came with carpool stickers and other benefits. If one has relatively short commutes, the plug in hybrid versions of the 3 series and 5 series are "no-brainers" relative to their gas counterparts. If commutes are longer or one does a lot of road trips, then the calculus is a bit more complicated due to the hybrid's small gas tank and lower fuel economy once the electric battery is discharged.
My lease is expiring in a few months and I'll be in the market for a new car. The 530e has been a good car; however, it is too big for my taste, so I want to downsize to a Tesla Model 3, Polestar 2, BMW 330e or Volvo S60 T8. You've compared the BMW with the Volvo; however, what would you select when also incorporating BEV competitors?
Interesting, thanks for sharing your experience with the 530e. I'm considering a 330e with the M Sport or a Tesla Model 3 as well. Where do you live by the way? I dont think we have carpool stickers here in New York. My commute is exactly 20 miles round trip so cars like these would work well for me. My other cars get very crappy mileage.
@@mujjuman I live in Southern California and one of the incentives for acquiring a hybrid or electric vehicle is access to the carpool lanes for solo drivers.
Please do a compact luxury sedan shootout! 3 Series vs. IS vs. G70 vs. C-Class etc.
Its a shame Infiniti dropped the Q50 hybrid from their lineup and didn't give it a refresh, it arrived in 2013-14 and set the benchmark for performance hybrids. Around 31MPG started at 48K, offered a NA V6 rather than a turbo 4 , was faster and offered nearly 350hp.
And that was all with the old VQ35 engine and the 7-speed from the G37., could only imagine what they could do with the the VR30 and the upcoming 9-speed.
N/A V6 is less efficient than a turbo I4
I was looking at the 330E when I got my 330i, but the fact that you can’t take advantage of that tax credit in the lease turned me away from it, and I ended up getting the 330i.
BMW all the way for sure!
Please compare 2022 G70 and the newest equivalent 3 series.
I just placed my deposit for a 2023 330e xDrive LCI. I would've loved to have an i4 M50, but it's $20K more and lead times are at least a year from date of order.
My commute is 60 miles/day, but I can trickle charge at work, so my gas consumption should be minimal.
Perfect rewiew 👌
I wish I could take the seats from this car and put them in my Honda Clarity, then I think I would be happy forever.
Dooooo ittttt
I had a Gen 2 Chevy Volt... started running into all the Volt problems ("Shift to Park", BECM failure), Looked at the RAV4 Prime, and decided to get the BMW 330e while I can still get out of a low-slung sedan. :D Sure the EV range isn't as great... but the drive is better.
Followup: I bought my 330e about a month before this review... No testing of XtraBoost?
honestly please add the Acura TLX and Honda Accord 2.0T and Accord Hybrid to the comparison against this BMW. Maybe even Mazda
I was hoping on getting an explanation of the acceleration times when in pure electric vs hybrid vs auto (which I'm not sure how this works in this car). Alex is normally really good at explaining the driving mode differences in plug in hybrids
The 5.8 second 0-60 mph time is in Sport mode, with both the ICE and electric motor in play.
In electric only mode, expect that time to stretch to about 13 seconds.
It is basically a 320i with an 111hp electric motor if anybody is wondering. Also it's 184hp not 181hp from the engine itself.
Dear Alex, like you way of presenting cars. If that would be possible, could you do a side-by-side comparison of 3.3L Stinger and a BMW 330e. They both have their pros and cons, and are on parr in terms of price. Many thanks in advance!
3.3 would compare to the b58. Inline 6
I happen to be cross shopping both 330e and S60 T8.
With the new R-design Expression trim, lots of S60 T8 on the lots are right around $51-52k. However any 330e with M package is $55k and above.
If you are leasing, Volvo actually passes all federal tax credit to you as incentives but BMW does none unless you use Owner's Choice which is a balloon finance only available in couple states.
Afterall, most likely the Volvo will run cheaper either buy or lease. Granted they are vastly different car so not many people are cross shopping them like I do.
Now here is the caveat, you can't find either of them. The current shortage is no joke..
It’s even worse now. Our BMW lot is empty aside from about 3-4 new vehicles and the rest are used. And when the new vehicles do come many are sold before they even get off the truck because people put deposits down to hold them when they eventually come in.
I just ordered a 330e here in Toronto. They say I will have it in 3 months. Can’t wait!
Please review the new M3 @alexonautos!
Full BEV, please. Where is the i4?
Always a great review Alex. After owning 5 BMWs I don’t see the value I get from my new KIA Niro. I love the tech and value vs. BMW. Sure the ride isn’t as good, but it’s good enough.
Alex, could you PLEASE explain the difference in more detail between mechanical AWD and all these new Hybrid or Plug-In-Hybrid-Vehicles or full electric AWD systems that use for a lack of a better term, E-AWD. I know Toyota has embraced this E-AWD thingy. I always thought the concept of having a dedicated electric motor driving individual wheels say in the back with torque verctoring (or whatever they call it), for each wheel, in electric mode, would always be superior and more advanced to an older mechanical method. I keep going down this rabbit hole with roller tests and other youtube traction tests and I am completely lost. I am strictly talking about HORRIBLE winter driving conditions in slushy GREASY snow in Eastern Ontario Canada (NOT off road - low range rock crawling, which I and the VAST majority of people will never do). Cheers
Don’t know if I can answer but the family Peugeot 3008 Hybrid has a system like this and over the past winter with more snow and ice than in ages (north of Sweden) it worked as good or better than our old Skoda or Volvo AWDs. Also, drinks about half of the fuel.
Have ordered a 330e. Waiting for it to be produced - that’s the hard part!
Ordered mine yesterday. Have you now got yours?
@@mrsmith7074 Oh yeah! Ordered it in Feb, delivered in mid-June. So far, really liking it. Have done both a good deal of city driving, wherein we can get nearly all of it done onjust electric, as well as XC drive. Used Battery Management to preserve battery for the end of the journey. Next time, may just let it go as it wants to, and see if there is difference in MPG. First tank refill wasn’t needed until we had it for a month! Now have a 220V connection in the garage, so we can charge more quickly, which is very helpful.
@@AFRetPA wow first refuel after a month! That’s brilliant.
How about the xtra boost mode? Is that performance fun?

Still SHM because I cannot for the life of me figure out "why" BMW does not utilize That good powertrain from the X5 45e and put that into the 5 series. I'd buy a 545e xdrive! Well at the very least...lease it!
As someone who knows nothing about hybrids, electric cars, or PHEVs, excuse my lack of knowledge, but if you were to use the car on full hybrid mode, which to my understanding allows the car to choose when to use the electric motor vs the internal combustion motor, how long does the electrical motor last on hybrid mode before all the charge is used up? I know the car gets 75 mpge, but how long does that last?
If you don’t intervene at all, hybrid mode will just use just about all of the electric range before turning on the gas motor. I will use the Battery Hold setting on the highway. In this setting, it is a true Hybrid and use mostly the gas engine.
Lowest cost.. yeah right. If the inventory is low, the dealers will mark this up, especially in California.
Great review as always! My frustrations lie with the German carmakers that sell you a plain-jane car for $45k and to make it nicely equipped, they charge you a cool $15k on top of it! For that issue alone, I'm not interested.
i agree and thats very typical of germans. japanese give you more tech goodies but with boring engines, uncomfortable seats, and sluggish transmissions. japanese comes with much better reliability and lower maintenance though. germans break down after 5-6 years.
Not sure where 15k came from honestly. I just optioned a 330e with everything including the M sport design appearance, the most expensive paint and wheels, full leather and even threw in adaptive dampers and the dynamic handlings package and it only added 11k. Even if I wanted to I can’t make it more expensive. Subtract a 3,500 dollar tax credit and this car is a bargain imo especially compared to its competitors.
@@mujjuman I find the ones who have problems with them after some time neglected to keep up on the car with preventative maintenance and general taking care of it (not flooring it when the engine isn’t at running temp, etc) I have two BMWs, one is almost 20 years old and the other is from 2013, both run fantastic with no lights on the dash and since buying both neither have left me stranded and always worked when I needed it to.
its nicely equipped base imo
Hello, anyone please what is the fuel economy in pure hybrid mode on a motorway with an avg of 130 or 160 km/h?
I can sometime get almost 30 miles in EV, if you can drive without traffic and braking and slowing down also charge the battery
Can you turn the stop/start engine off??? I hate when the car turns off at every light! I wont buy a car without a deactivation button for the stopstart engine.
In Sport and Xtraboost, the engine doesn't cut off. But why buy a hybrid if that is a problem for you in the first place?
How is it that a massive SUV like the RAV4 Prime gets better gas mileage at 38 mpg vs this car's 28 mpg? They've both got about 300 hp too.
I think I just found my next car!
the modern bmw`s looked better a few years ago. now the grille is even larger and they have gotten rid of some of the nice body lines under it
In the uk drive it nicely and you will get over 30 miles on electric only
Like I said many times, the manufacturers' "combined legroom" figures are useless. For example, Giulia actually has one of the smallest legroom, Volvo has one of the largest!
Lexus needs to make a plug in IS.
True!! I own IS 250 and I think the ES hybrid is too big for me so I still want the IS instead. Now I might have to get this BMW.
are you sure what torque steer is?
Who else is here because of the $5 gas prices
My take on 330e: EV range not worth talking about for a $45k car, and gas MPG is really low. If you want a PHEV, Toyota RAVV4 or Honda Clarity are much better choices with nearly twice the EV range and bigger fed and state rebates. Neither will handle like BMW, but then repair costs are way, way, lower and so is price. Full disclosure: I’ve had 3-Series BMW for 10 yrs, and currently have Clarity and Model 3. I would definitely recommend the latter over the new 330e. Quicker, cheaper or only slightly more costly in AWD version, and lots more storage space inside and out. There’s a hefty “badge premium” for BMW, and service/repair costs escalate rapidly as car ages.
Totally agree. Also a prior 3 series owner. Had a new one as a loaner recently and was completely disappointed. The 4 cyl was so unrefined. For comparable or less money the Tesla M3/my is a much better option.
Great car, great review. With a 5.5 year break-even and what looks to be an additional 160Kg for the 330e, I'd go for the 330i
S60 hands down
Do you know if 330e has head up display?
Yes it can.
How does this car get such low gasoline and electric efficiency? It is lower than the Pacific Hybrid which is a plug-in minivan. I get that BMW is quicker to accelerate, but it seems like the cruising efficiency should be better.
Bmw bro.
How about the first gen? It’s sooooo cheap right now.
There's a reason why it's so cheap now. Not for any good reason lol
If you mean last gen as in f series, then it's a great option.
@@thelarry383 I found ‘18 as low as 10K miles for around 22K
. Crazy cheap.
Wait hold up, someone correct me if I’m wrong but, the fuel economy is much higher than 28mpg without EV. It’s 75mpg with combined EV+gas, which means after the 30ish miles from pure EV are over, the rest should be rated around 45mpg. This number makes more sense for hybrid cars. This car is a hybrid+EV, not gas+EV car, if that makes sense.
Yeah I was thinking the same. Nobody has been clear about this so far.
@@adityaprasanna611 Okay so I was massively wrong. 75 is the estimated eMPG number, its just how efficient the electric motor is at powering the vehicle. The car’s MPG is 28 when its on pure gas, but it can travel in pure EV mode and hybrid mode too. I don’t know what the combined or hybrid mode mpg is but its prob around 38 or 40mpg. I see the best use of a plug in hybrid when one of your daily commutes, ie work, is within the rated electric only range. Then you will be saving tons on gas.
@@namarocks101 Thanks. 28 mpg doesn’t sound bad (My reference being the Kia K5 which is only ICE that gives only 27 mpg) but the hybrid mode is still limited to the electric range right? Apparently even in hybrid mode, it finishes the electric range first and then switched over to gas. So in any case, you’re limited to the electric range. What I’m surprised about is that it could give 28 mpg while dragging a 450 lbs electric motor.
@@adityaprasanna611 yeah the mpg isn’t changing much even with the large electric motor weight. I didn’t know that the car doesn’t have a proper hybrid mode, interesting!
Correction... and a bit of a surprise... in hybrid mode, the 330e gets worse fuel economy than the 330i in both city and highway driving. It isn't uncommon to see highway mpg drop a bit since it doesn't benefit much if at all from the hybrid system, but it's odd that the city mpg is worse since it should benefit from the electric motors and regenerative braking.
the mpg is worse only if the battery is dead.
@@kristians2704 That makes no sense. How do other hybrids get better mpg than gas versions then?
@@webcomment8895 if you’re talking about regular hybrids (not phev) then they just charge by them selves. If the battery is dead then because the car is heavier the petrol engine has to work harder to get the car mooving.
@@kristians2704 PHEVs also can partially charge from the gas engine. They just don't drive in full electric mode unless you charge them with electricity. So, the battery should never go completely dead.
I feel like this a stop gap era and one day we're going to look at PHEV as curiosities. Even in Formula One, the turbo electric hybrid era has been regarded as a curse and ruinously expensive.
Yeah, it is a base model but I checked only the price of the tires and that is all I can afford.....
Wow the Volvo has one mile less electric range. Big difference
A BMW with even more complications to break. I'd be scared to own this past 5 years with all the plastics they use under the hood.
PHEV is preferable to a full EV simply due to the nature of EV's in 2021. If charging was faster and more reliable, I'd go full EV instead but honestly full EV's are a luxury still, even the affordable ones, simply due to factors money can not fix. PHEV's give you the advantages of EV's which is all electric local driving while still giving you gas driving capability. I don't do cross country roadtrips like 99% of people, But I still could put on 200 miles in a day when its below freezing and would have to stop out in the cold for a considerable amount of time to refuel, whereas a PHEV would get me there and back without needing a gas station if I disable the EV only mode and just make it a hybrid with a very big battery (and save the EV mode for when I get to the city 120 miles away).
What a shame Infiniti has dropped its M35h/q50h/q70h direct drive hybrid drivetrain instead of evolving it - all they needed was a better packing (useable trunk) and more polishing. It would've been way better than this pile...
Came here to say this.
It wouldn’t be better than this because of the interior alone.
@@kristians2704 Why would you compare 2021 interior vs 2011 when I was talking about drivetrain? This 4 cyl isn't getting any better mpg than any other 4 cyl, while vq35hr + electric motor STILL has a better output AND is more effective FOR THE SAME PRICE...
@@rosgoncharuk2403 with the improvements in hybrid battery tech and interior tech we've seen in the intervening years, a new generation Q50/Q70 Hybrid would be so awesome.

2. 3 series
3. Genesis G70
4. Volvo S60
5. Acura TLX
6. Audi A4
7. Lexus IS
8. Infinti Q50

Agreed. IS and Q50 are very bad though. Huge gap between IS/Q50 and rest of the lineup. They are garbage using 2014 tech that wasn't even great to start with at the time.
What is the point of this car?
28 mpg for a hybrid sedan is hilarious.

Alex, what does the statement "you'll be able to save on 2 gallons of gasoline" even mean? All PHEV craze assumes that electricity is free (it's not). If it was free, yes you'd save on gas on gas quite a bit, and get MPG 40, 50 or above (total number of miles traveled on a vehicle divided by the total number of gallons you pour in your tank, say averaged over a month).
However for an average customer electricity isn't free. For example in NJ it's pretty expensive, about 20 cents per kWh with delivery costs. However gas in NJ is pretty cheap, below $3 gallon. My Tesla 3 consumes 300 Wh/mile. If you run the numbers, it comes about 2x cheaper to drive Tesla compared to a similar gas vehicle with 25 mpg.
Now, BMWs PHEVs are not nearly as efficient as Tesla (heavier). In fact, BMW X5 is more than 2x less energy efficient. That means that *X5 PHEV is economically less viable* than gas-only x40i. If you drive 12K miles a year, you'll pay less $$$ for x40i!
What's the point? Plus it's a very dangerous buy: if you plan to own the car for 3 years, PHEV might go out of favor; BMW will increase range and/or charging speed. Could be a huge hassle to sell it.
I was nursing an idea of BMW PHEV, but completely gave up on it having above considerations.
It’s definitely not worth 60,000 you can get much better BMW for that like a five series or for serious
the 3 series is not compact sedan
Volvo T8 no doubt.
400hp and 30mpg is clearly more tech than 288hp and 28mpg in 330e.
Way too expensive for a generic sedan
Whenever I hear a car is pushing $50K, I immediately think, "Why not Tesla?" You know, buy American.
I would get a Tesla model 3 LR.
