    2021 BMW 330e. I get a pretty solid 25-28 miles of all electric range in Florida Summer temps. I do not pre-condition and do not skimp on the A/C, window defrost, radio, etc. I will drive for economy, but not like a granny. The overall range of this car is more like 400 miles on the highway. I have never, not once, in the 30 years I have been driving ever attempted to drive 400 miles straight without stopping. So, BMW cutting back the fuel tank for a "mere" 400 mile range is not a con in any real world use. I would even be ok with BMW increasing the battery another 50% and cutting back another 2-3 gallons off the fuel tank. 300 total range is enough for everyone, as you would certainly want to take a break within the time it takes to drive that range. Its funny how EV people seem to think its fine for a Tesla to get 300 miles, but somehow if a car with a fuel tank can't get 700 miles then its inadequate. Its complete nonsense. Practically speaking, 300 miles is plenty in any real world scenario. Especially true if you charge the battery daily and your daily trips are within the range of the battery. I would still go weeks or even months without needing to add fuel to a 7 gallon tank in the same way I do now with the 10.4 gallon tank. As for ride, my wife got a loaner 2021 330i (with under 1000 miles on it) for an extended period when her X3 needed repairs. Honestly, the 330e rides way better. That extra weight gives it more inertia and the suspension, steering dynamics, etc., is tuned perfectly for it. The 330i feels like they copied the tuning profile from the 330e, but its lighter so does not react quite right in most situations especially in turns. I could not disagree with you more on this. I think you should go back and drive a 330i again. The 330i just does not have a great ride. I would rather get the 530i if not going PHEV. I'm 5'10" and fit perfectly fine in the back with the driver seat in my driving position. But, yeah, if the driver is 6'6", then yes, the seat behind will be cramped. Same thing happens in my 3/4 ton crew cab truck.

      Oh no, don't get me wrong. I think the 330e has a more forgiving ride than the 330i. I agree with you on that. I just don't think it feels as agile as the 330i around corners.
      As for the fuel tank, I think people do want a longer overall range. I've done long road trips and could have gone further if it weren't for needing to refuel. But I guess with ICEs it doesn't really matter as much since gas stations are so plentiful and it only takes 5 minutes to refuel. Electric cars are a different story.

      @@MGReviewsBlog If you put 1000 miles a week on a car, I can see you wanting one of those 700+ mile range cars even if you do not plan to drive 700 miles straight without stopping. But these owners are rare. Most people put 10k-15k miles per year on their car, and most trips are short. The additional fuel capacity is only desired because it extends the days between having to go to a gas station and fuel up. But like I said, if you have a PHEV with 25-28 miles of range that problem gets solved for a lot of users. IMO, 40-45 miles of all electric range in a PHEV would be the grand slam home run, and worth it even if you have to reduce the tank another 2-3 gallons to 7-8 gallons. That would probably be a total range of about 300-325 miles in a cars like these. Beyond that a PHEV starts to become less attractive as a whole package. The car gets too heavy, the total range gets too short, and the cost gets too high. I suspect at that point, 40-45 miles all electric and 275-ish miles gas, it will be the very best we will see in a PHEV until the next major jump in battery technology. You could also use non-ethanol on longer trips for some additional MPG's. It would still be cheaper than a Tesla living on superchargers.

      Your answer is spot on. Range on motorways is easily 600-650km. On battery 40-45 km at all times, my max electric range when testing was 68km (avg speed of 80-90km). When going for holidays, 4 persons + fully loaded trunk the avg consumption was 5.9l/100km, having no opportunity of charging the car thus ICE only (motorway speed 110-130km/h).

      Most I have ever gotten is 33 miles all electric in local city driving. A/C on 70' and low fan. Daytime driving lights on. Mild traffic, driving like an old lady. 80' outside temp. Worst I have gotten is 22 miles. A/C full blast. Daytime driving lights on. Moderate traffic, driving super aggressive. 97' outside temp. It really depends on how hot it is, how much A/C, and how aggressive you drive. 25-28 miles is no problem 99% of the time.

      Great comments. I have a 330e rwd on order. I’m 6’2” and I was very surprised by the amount of rear leg room sitting behind “myself”. For taller rear seat passengers than 6’2” I would think that sitting behind the passenger seat would be fine since even a tall passenger can adjust their seat closer than a driver. I live in Toronto and the car qualified for the $2,500 federal rebate so with sticking to the rwd model means that I’m getting quite a lot of car and it’s a great value. $42,500 basically before options which I think is a steal. If what people are saying is true about the electric only range being higher in the real world then the savings from not spending as much on gas almost pays for the car! Also, driving around in electric only mode looks like a lot of fun from what I see, and we are at a time when luxury cars will be electric by default for the quiet smooth operation. With the Xtraboost mode the driver gets an experience that isn’t available with a pure electric car and it sounds great. I think it’s a very cool proposition and I couldn’t be more excited! A 330i was out if my price range but I think the 330e is honestly the better car when you also take value and running costs in mind.

    in australia we only get rwd 330e. My one says 5.9sec 0-100 claimed but I've tested with GPS draggy at 5.1seconds which is pretty quick for a hybrid. I constantly get 45-55km on electric range

    Thank you for an excellent review. Having driven Porsches for years, I switched to BMW when I was in my mid-40's and started with the 7 series for seven years, moved to the 5 series for a year and then to the 3 series i the mid 90's and have loved the fact that it was almost as good as a Porsche Carrera in drivability. So I have been driving some iteration of the 328, 335, 330 ever since. Today, I heard about the 330e which intrigued me enough that I started to consider it. Now, after reading your review, I will stick with the what I have. THANK YOU!

      Thanks for watching the review! The 330e is a comfortable and efficient daily commuter but if you want the classic sporty driving dynamics of a BMW, this doesn't really provide it. It's a bit too soft.

  • @brianhill2676
    @brianhill2676 Рік тому

    Wow. Your the first to think the 330i is more fun to drive. I saw one where the weight if the car made it sturdier around the corner. Centre gravity. I am thinking of the 330e power and efficiency. I will check out the 330i. Thanks fir the review.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  Рік тому

      Well, if the weight of the car is centrally located and down low in the chassis, it does help with center of gravity and provide the planted feel around corners. But weight is the enemy of every vehicle. If you can reduce it, efficiency goes up and fun factor because there's less inertia when it comes to acceleration, braking and cornering.
      I like the 330e as a daily commuter type of sedan but the lighter 330i or M340i don't have such a weight penalty with the hybrid battery so they're a bit more agile (M340i more so, obviously lol).

    Excellent review. Great video work. The 330e is an interesting proposition for Canada since it's priced low enough to qualify for 2,500 in Federal rebates (ZEV) and 1,500 in BC (CleanBC). So at 45K less 4K in rebates, this is the cheapest 3 Series available. Sounds like a bit of a compromise on the sporty driving side (compared to 330e) but could be good as a daily driver and a nice way to try out a PHEV, especially at this price. Would be interesting to compare with Model 3 SR+ (same net price after rebates).

      You're right, like I said in the video this is a good daily commuter. It's comfortable, quiet, and fuel efficient (so long as you continuously plug it in). But it does lose some of the fun driving dynamics that the 3-series is known for due to the extra weight.
      I have to try and find a Model 3 from a friend because Tesla doesn't have a press fleet per se like all the other manufacturers haha.
      Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for a review. You referred few times to 330i. Can you specify in what respect it is more driving engaging, maybe as bullet points? Honestly, i didnt feel much difference, maybe i'm not sensitive enough? Thank you.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  3 роки тому

      The 330i feels more agile than the 330e. In the 330e, you feel the weight transfer more, it is about 450 lbs heavier than the 330i (both with xDrive). It's also slower to 60 mph by about 0.4 seconds despite the extra total power.
      Like I said in the video, it is very comfortable and would make a great daily commuter, but to me, it just lost some of the BMW driving characteristics that the 3-series is known for in becoming a PHEV.
      Thanks for watching!

    in order to qualify for the government rebate, the base price is tagged just below 45k, that is why adding xdrive is so much expensive.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  3 роки тому

      Ohhh, that makes sense. I guess then they overcharge on xDrive to make up for the price loss of the RWD?

    • @btkfrank

      @@MGReviewsBlog In order to qualify for the rebate, as long as the base model is under 45k, any trim above base model and below 55k will also get the rebate, just like model 3, the base model just priced below 45k with only 150 range, it is there for people to buy higher trimmed model and still get rebate.

      Here in Europe both cars and fuel are for more expensive so we’ve to take that and the CO2 emissions into consideration. I own a 330e for the past 2 years and guess what. My daily comité show 1.6l and 3,7l on long distance highway.
      That said I would add there are a lot of non sense in your video presentation. Lack of space?Try an A4 Merc C or a Jag XE.

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  2 роки тому +1

      If you leave the car in normal hybrid mode, it'll try to use up the electric battery before switching to the gasoline engine. So even on a highway doing about 100 - 110 km/h, it'll still run on the battery until it's drained. After that, it'll switch to the gasoline engine and just run like a normal 4-cylinder. So you'll probably be looking at around 7 to 8 L/100km, unless you tell it to also recharge the battery while on the move in which case it'll be closer to 12 L/100km.
      Hope this helps!
