I've had my 330e saloon for just over a year now. Saving £80 a month in BiK compared to the 420d i had before. Over 60 % of my driving is now pure electric, I charge at home on 3 pin plug and worked out electric running costs are 25% compared to Petrol costs. On a longer run use Hybrid mode and I easily get 70+mpg. On pure electric I can get over 40 mpg with re gen braking and a relaxed driving style. Free charging at supermarkets It's an absolute no brainer. Why do so many car reviewers jump into a PHEV then start fussing about the 0-60 times and cornering on 2 wheels. Only journalists do that in cars they don't own ! You are missing the whole point of a PHEV which for the vast majority of people can use as a full EV on those weekend outings and shopping trips yet on longer runs returns over 70mpg. Another point that is frequently missed is just how comfortable and quiet the cabin is. You cannot tell the difference in noise when the engine cuts in or when the battery takes over. One final point - who puts M sport brakes on a PHEV when it's all about NOT touching the brake pedal it's about regenerative braking and as for heated steering wheel ??? Why do you need that when you can pre heat the whole car on BMW phone app 15 mins before you set off and the whole car is toasty warm !!! Come on Journalists up your game ......

I took delivery of a 330e X Drive MSport Pro Touring (mouthful!) about 3 weeks ago in Dravit Grey (nicer than Mineral😉). Prior I had had a Golf R 7.5, Golf R 7 and an e92 335d so I am comparing it to decent drives.
I must say I absolutely love the 330e. I think you missed one of its biggest pluses - it is such a refined car. Harry Metcalfe said the x5 45e was in Rolls Royce territory, this isn’t too far behind. Between the drivetrain, acoustic glass and adaptive suspension it is sublime. I am averaging also about 70mpg. To be honest it makes you want to relax while the R made you want to grab it by the scruff of the neck.
But when you want the 330e to go it is savagely quick mid range so I have no performance complaints.
My daily return commute is about 60 miles and I can plug in at home so the car suits my lifestyle, I accept that for bigger commutes the 30d is the better choice (but not as refined). Because of lockdown I bought this without my usual weekend test drive, in fact I hadn’t driven one at all (madness I know) so I was taking a risk but all the reviews were 👍. I was apprehensive when it arrived but after 3 weeks I can say that so far this is one of the best cars I have ever had. Hopefully the honeymoon continues.

I have an 330e M-sport 19”, have driven it 30000km in Sweden. 58-60km on pure electric in the summer, and 40-42km in winter. No problem! And always use the navi on longer travels.

Great review! My father got this 330e xDrive Touring in November. He has to drive about 50 km a day and charges the car at home, so this car fits very well and has a fuel consumption about 2,5 l/100km (so at least twice as good than a Diesel engine). I personally drive the car approx twice a week. The electric range depends very much on the weather conditions. In winter the range can be less than 15km and on a warm day you can drive 50km only with the electric engine.
    Best regards from Germany!

Good comment. Similar experiences on my G30 530e in Finland. Consumption 2,0 l / 100 km with an average of 40 km / day. In winter the range can be 50 % compared to summer.

I’ve just bought one of these and took it for its first long run today - Derby to Glastonbury, around 170 miles. I think that this car makes sense for more buyers than just BIK buyers. This was not a company car purchase but a private lease. Got a great deal on it. Reason I say that it is not just suited to benefit in kind buyers is be due j think it will suit our needs perfectly. We do loads of short runs taking the kids to school and my wife driving a couple of miles to work. Rarely more than 20 miles a day during the week. For us getting a great mpg and having the ultra creamy silent ride you get is more important than dealing with the less suitable diesel for these kinds of journeys. I was interested to see what mpg I would get on today’s long ride and it managed a very respectable 55 mpg. I occasionally used the battery hold button which allows you to accumulate more reserves in the batteries and I did notice the love mpg figure drop quite noticeably when I did that. Tomorrow I drive back without any reserves though again I will be able to use the battery hold button to build that back up if I so choose. But I think Joe is a big wide of the mark here when he says you are unlikely to see more that 28mpg once the batteries are depleted. Overall I’m incredibly impressed.

    • @lostcomposer
      @lostcomposer 2 роки тому +5

So today i returned from glasto to derby, this time running the car from 0 miles available from the batteries. I noticed though that over the course of the trip (which I did entirely in hybrid mode at the national speed limit) 3 miles were accumulated in the battery from regen breaking. Amazingly I achieved 46 mpg. Really please with that. On the odd occasion when I did floor it extra boost was there if I wanted it. It will be interesting to see what mpg we get this week over all the short runs on a full battery. I’ll let you know.

@@lostcomposer Just took at ~3 degree C 20 mile journey across London with a starting claimed electrical range of 2 miles. When I got home it had done 10 of those miles on electric only. I've had the car for 18 months now and it still surprises me. Low average mph really helped today, but the regen feature of this car is really hard to get to grips with in a short time and none of the reviews I've seen have been able to articulate it properly in my experience. In 18 months my average mpg is 84 with a charger at home, and at many destinations (I work freelance so commute to different places almost every day). Couldn't be happier with it.

I think what many journalists (not just you) easily forget ist that with "only" 184 hp, about 80% or 90% of the cars around you will have even less power... and on a family trip our '06 VW Sharan 2.0 TDI with 140 hp will be loaded up to 2 tons easily with 5 passengers yet that power still feels perfectly adequate. I guess that just comes from being around new cars all the time (no offense though, keep up the great content!)

All is relative. I am considering changing to a 330e coming from a V60 D4. My Volvo is 1600kg with 190hp and 400nm. My main concern is the lack of torque, but the electric engine should make up for that. The 330i is really nice to drive, but financially it doesn’t make sense in my case.

I’ve been living with a 330e saloon since August and have covered nearly 19k in it so far. I’d say on average I get around 40 miles of electric drive daily with what it generates itself in addition to the full charge I give it overnight as most of my journeys are over 100 miles. I never notice a significant power drop when my electric has depleted either.
I also have averaged 66mpg since having the car in August. So it’s better than my old 118d for sure and I pay very little company car tax and get enjoyment every time I get in the car. Personally very pleased with it

Have had mine since October 2019, and covered 26k in it, and totally agree that there is no significant power drop! The reason is that there is a buffer left on the battery when it is depleted, so you will always have the xtraboost power available. Best 3-series I´ve owned.

Hi Joe, I've got a 2020 330e M-Sport as a company car, and yes, the electric range around town is 18-20 miles unless it's very flat and you are very gentle with the throttle. But run in hybrid mode, this is where it starts to make more sense. A trip to Manchester and back this week I covered 90 miles, 41 of which were on using electric due to the regen so ave mpg was 52 (no charging). And that included a lot of 'spirited' driving in Xtraboost so I could have probably done more on electric and used a lot less petrol but had some fun on the back roads. Day to day I use it for short runs and in the last 600 miles, I've only done about 60 miles on petrol. So ave mpg is 90+.

I have owned my 330e since December and for me it is the perfect workhorse. I have owned several 330d estates in the past but with the recent BIK changes this makes perfect sense . I only travel upto 40miles a day for my work commute and with charge points at work it costs very little run especially with the very low Bik. Performance wise, I do not miss my previous 330ds. There is the normal BMW driving pleasure and the electric boost surpasses the 330d. The car manages to ALWAYS keep some battery in reserve even when the electric range is depleted (10 seconds of boost always in the tank). I have managed at least 35 miles of pure electric range with the warmer weather (15⁰+). yes the noise pumped into the cabin Is artificial but seeing the dials light up blue with boost is worth while!

  • @eddie8742
    @eddie8742 3 роки тому +6

I have this very same car right now, and I used to own a 330e (G20) Sedan non-XDrive before. The thing that many people don't understand about this car, and BMW is not very good at explaining either, is that the numbers for the range are neither right nor wrong. One way of using this car by driving it in electric mode, which forces it to use only the battery until it runs out of energy. In this mode, you get anything from 55 to around 25 Km of range, depending greatly on the outside temperature and how you drive it --at city speeds you'd get the most. However, that's not the end of the story, because once the car has depleted the energy in the battery it'll continuously recharge it and switch to electric mode every time it has enough energy and gets the chance. A typical long distance trip in this car results in you driving about 1/3 of the distance on electricity, which for a 500Km trip means about 170Km, which is way more than the total range advertised by BMW. For this reason, the advertised range is neither right nor wrong. It is correct in the summer if you drive at around city speeds, and it's wrong in the winter (for the worse) or during long distance trips (for the better), it all depends on how you look at it.

There are clear advantages

I have the saloon / sedan shape, and the most electric only range I’ve got out of it is 47km (29.2miles). Which I think is pretty impressive. It’s the same whether I put it in hybrid eco pro, or adaptive mode. Speed wise it’s a mix of 50kph/80kph/100kph roads. For a 40km each way daily commute with the ability to charge at the office for free, (and not to mention cheaper road tax here in the NL for a PHEV), it’s a choice that works for me

I have gotten more than what BMW has specified. So it is possible for sure to acchieve the numbers.
Today with the AC on 18c degrees I got 61.2km. Car is Specified at 58km on a single charge. The most I’ve got on a single charge is 66.1km. I got my car back in late July 2020 and my avrage MPG since then (9 month-isch) is : 130mpg on a total of 8077 miles driven.
Of course the weather temperatures plays in. Below 10c degrees the range is somewhere between 40-50km range depending on pre-conditioning the cabin.
Around 0c degrees its between 35-42km also depending on pre-conditioning the cabin or not.
The lowest I got on a charge was 27km when it was -15 to -18 degrees here in Stockholm this winter. But during that time the car would not start in electric mode either, it would start on petrol and warm up all the electric systems first before it even would let the car go into full electric.
For people who want to learn to get the max out of a full charge of battery BMW videos on effecient driving are pretty good.

However, I’ve had 28+ miles on battery alone, on multiple occasions (I think I can get over 30 miles with the temp over 20C). Plus on a 95 mile journey I’ve had over 86MPG with about 96% of the battery to use. Even in the depth of winter cold and rain I’ve had over 75mpg on the same route.

Thanks for the review Joe. I've been considering this even though I'm not on the company car spectrum. I like tech and the gadgetry here with EV mode and hybrid modes just appeals to me more than a pure IC car. I can also charge at home and 95% of my journies are within 25 miles. I completely agree that the EV range is the real downside here. If it did a solid 35 miles (probably claimed 45) then it would be much more attractive as I really don't want to lose that performance on longer road trips for example. The new Merc C-Class seems to tick more boxes here - longer EV range and also more powerful engines so if you are out of battery juice you can at least fall back on something pokier. I almost wish they'd added the EV tech to the 330i or 330D instead for that reason, but first and foremost a bigger battery would have been better. I'd sooner it gained a little weight than ran out of poke.

We drive the 330e sedan with RWD and it actually is possible to achieve those low consumption figures. You just need to let the car do its thing. Adaptive + GPS navigation precalculates the route and actually makes both engines work together. The electric motor engages for example uphill and helps the combustion engine so it doesn't need to shift down. It goes electric only downhill too. We often drive a 500km trip with a lot of Autobahn, we get something like 7 liters per 100km with an average speed of 120km/h there. On the daily route to work and back with Autobahn, B roads and city all together, we already had a fuel consumption of only 2 liters per 100km, of course using up all the electric charge. The thing I wanna say is if you let both engines support each other, this drive train CAN be insanely efficient. Here in Germany this car costs us with a list price of 70.000€ as much as a Mini Cooper S 5 door would cost. In our case as a work car, a nobrainer.
And in our car at least, you never run out of electric energy. Especially in XtraBoost, it recuperates quiet hardly and makes sure to recharge in moments of little load. In Hybrid or Adaptive it's pretty similar. It always leaves a few percent of electric energy so you at least get the 252hp it does outside of XtraBoost.

Nice bit of VT there Joe as always...🎩
Hope you don't mind, but felt compelled to mention that after watching your videos since lockdown started I've been slowly turning into a bit of a BMW fan. However much I'd love an M3 touring - when they come out - or any kind of 3 series touring for that fact, I've taken my first step into BMW ownership with a 2012 E84 X1 20D Efficient Dynamics Sdrive. Not the most exciting I agree, but as we need something affordable to run, my wife was keen on a smaller SUV, I fancied a bit of rear wheel drive and from what I've read it's a good first step into a BMW, it ticked most of the boxes.
Anyway, just wanted to share that with you, thanks again and as ever, stay safe and well...🎩

I got the 330e xDrive and average around 30 to 35 miles on electric. Longer journeys just put the navigator with the adress and it uses petrol or electric depending on the road conditions. Example longer hill climbs it switch then to petrol or declines then to electric.

Average speed was 82,4 km and driven on pure electric was 62 km (one the one sharge before start). So I thing it really depends on how hard you are pressing the right pedal :-) . @Joe Achillies are you gonna test the 530e as well?

Hey Joe, great review as always. On the subject of cold engines, I've read that gentle driving, say 2000-2500 rpm, is better for your engine than protracted idling because the temperature of the oil rises quicker.

One thing that I think it needed though while doing the spec part - some coverage of the impact on practicality the batteries have... I run a 17 plate 330e M Sport that is RWD only and a claimed e-range of 25 miles but the best I have had is 18 before the ICE kicks in. What makes these cars great is the regen capability. My work commute is 30 miles each way and get 21 miles on pure EV going to work and 25 miles pure EV on the way home (due to the lay of the land). Running i Sport mode has a harder regen capability so works out more economical over time. The car will always keep 9% charge for stop Start and will use some electric power when first starting the petrol engine (I presume to pre-heat the engine). Now that they do an X-Drive estate, I would consider another 330e, although the X45e is very appealing (unless I win some money and can afford the Audi E-Tron RS!). Main thing for people being put off these due to the low EV range, don’t think you have to rely on the ICE if the energy is depleted because the regen is very good.

Have an 2019 530e (RWD) with the bigger battery and the longest range on electric I managed was 57 km (35,5 miles) on highway (110 km/h) during the summer, but I ordered mine with the efficient 17" tires (Goodyear) and kept the fan off the whole journey with the windows down (next car will be ordered with sunroof), so yes it's possible to achieve the the 34 mile range on electric.

Hi Joe, you asked for feedback on Leccy range. I have the 330e RWD G20 saloon. I think the Elec range on this is a fraction more at 37? I regularly get between 27 - 32 miles on a full electric charge. Interestingly if you use the Anticipatory Hybrid Drive I actually got 49.4 electric miles within a 93 mile total journey last week due to the regenerative braking topping the battery back up! You must have lead lined boots 😉😉🤣🤣👍🏻

I was wondering if I would be tempted to go for a hybrid once the touring version was available, but for me there's no compelling reason to change and I would miss the L6 sound and turn of pace. Perhaps an M3 touring next???

A very honest and insightful review Joe. My next new car needs to be a 4WD estate and you’ve helped to confirm what I thought I already know - and that’s the fact that PHEVs on long journeys just become ICE cars with smaller engines, smaller fuel tanks and a boot full of batteries!
You didn’t mention one other issue - the 330e x Drive boot drops down to 410 litres compared to 500 on the ICE cars. That’s only slightly larger than a Golf! Pretty much removes the estate’s practicality.
