Went to my Retro Gamestop the other day, only saw Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 games out, then found the little cabinet of DS games, started looking, one of the employees came over and said he had more games behind the counter, he opened a drawer and had all N64, Gameboy Advance and a bunch of other disc based games. He looked up the prices for me, and I found 4 for the $40 sale that was going on. Left happy!

Gamestop is doing things smart by going into retro sale. Retro is awesome for us older gamers who appreciate games from the past and have also seen how the game market has evolved since the late 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.

I remember when GameStop sold GameCube games, crazy how Wii is considered retro now. Back then those were the latest haha 😆. 360, PS3, Wii, it was an amazing era
Wow Funcoland. My eyes would light up when I saw those different colored letter spelling Funcoland. In those days I lived in Camden, NJ and Funcoland was in Moorestown, a few minutes away past the Cherry Hill Mall. Man, those were the best days.
Solid video! It would be cool if GameStop would do retro decor in some of their flagship stores that see higher volume. It would be pretty nostalgic to see an old Babbages or Funcoland setup like back in the early 90s.
This is great, but the only way GameStop will be able to capitalize is to sell these retro games for cheaper prices than retro gaming stores. Their selection has to go back to at least the atari days to compete. Retro gaming stores these days sell literally everything, but their prices can be really high at times. So let's see what GameStop does with this. In my opinion, this is something GameStop should've never stopped doing in the first place. I remember when they had all these old games back in the days.
Younger GameStop employee / retro gamer here. I'm able to recognize fake games from the retro generation. always surprises my older coworkers. GameStop is trying in the retro game section but gamers beware many can't spot fakes. If you know retro games you can definitely catch them lacking at points
I left working part-time at GameStop recently, but I'm also on the younger side. Same deal here, I was always able to tell a fake from a real almost instantly. When I went to another location to buy a Pokemon Gold they'd gotten in, they had fell for a very clear fake.
This actually makes me want to go to GameStop again. Great video and great finds! Especially the CIB games? GameStop really showing off now and I think is going to win back a lot of people
I think what GameStop had this planned the whole time taking all they retro games and been keeping them hidden in the warehouse, and waiting to bring them back out I remember GameStop used to have so many retro games
They need to bring this up to NYC so I can go in on some retro games... and gamestop should've never stopped buying, selling and trading ps1, ps2, OG xbox, gamecube, snes, and n64 etc
I grew up with the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube and onwards, and even got to play the consoles from the 90's and 80's. The funny thing is stores (probably still) had the retro games. According to what I heard (as a GameStop worker myself), they had stores send most, if not all, of their retro games to the Retro specific stores. 🙂
@MrWrightWay I lived above a GameStop in college, and I found plenty of "Field Destroyed" games when I would take out my garbage. They took a razor blade to the discs.
Florida here, when they bought out Rhino they also damaged out vintage stock. I knew someone that worked there during the transition. They had all the retro stuff on sale for a few weeks, then everything that didn't sell got hit with a hammer and thrown in the dumpster. This was like 07, so we're taking vintage cartridge based games.
They have always field destroyed games, many times because they have too many in stock, but the worst was around 2004 when they just field destroyed everything Dreamcast and Older. My local store had a dumpster 3/4 full. The stuff you saw may have been stuff they were not allowed to take in, or stuff that was overstocked. Gamestop never stopped selling 360/PS3, so it had to have been either overstock you were finding. Thankfully the local stores don't take the time to field destroy stuff, so I found lots of overstock in the dumpers from 2015-2020, and traded it in to other stores.
Man I’m getting old! PS3 and 360 don’t seem that long ago! But realistically when we were playing those games it had been 20 years since the nes release. Were playing ps5 and Xbox series games almost 20 years later 😭

My local Gamestop has a tall glass case dedicated to retro games. The original poster is right; it’s not for collectors. $59 for Shaq-FU is a joke. Most of their retro games are missing their boxes and manuals, but this doesn’t decrease their value either. They ask full market value for their games, which would normally be a complete CIB version on eBay.
Hope they introduce some PSP games at some point. I know the UMD's weren't the greatest, but I really loved everything about that handheld and would love to see it in stores again
I remember a gamestop employee told me that they were going to start selling retro games i think sometime in 2022/early 2023. Glad to see it finally come to fruition! Albeit its only certain gamestop locations so far. Haven’t bought anything yet but I do know many people would love to get their old systems from gamestop!
13:04 not in games so much, but definitely in a Nintendo magazine called Nintendo Force. Same with mine... theres only one gamestop that sells retro stuff here but its located in a military type base/housing. They have malls and stuff where they are tax free for military but you need a military ID to get in 😡
GameStop is in a unique position getting into the retro business. They already have a lot of locations they can sell at as well as the capital to truly invest into it. If they do it well and are fair with pricing they could actually HELP the retro scene quite a bit by keeping a lot of these other retro stores honest because a lot of them over charge quite a bit to be frank. If GameStop undercuts them it'll force them to stop with the forced inflation on many games which is awesome for collectors. Like an example is I found ultimate Spider-Man for the og Xbox for 20 bucks at GameStop! Great condition too. I've been wanting to add it to my collection for awhile but most places were selling it from like 50 all the way to nearly a hundred bucks.
It's good that they are consolidating their old games to specific stores, but I can't help that I am bit underwhelmed. I visited 3 different stores in SoCal. Also, it's not like GameStop is going to pay more for employees handling retro games. It may be okay for disc based games, but not so for cartridge based games where the market is flooded with pirated carts (especially for Mario and Pokémon games). Do they get enough to inspect and clean games? Probably not. I hope their minimum common denominator approach works. I think going forward, it would work better if GameStop Retro franchised their name for people to start their own store with more freedom regarding their inventory maybe (similar to fast food franchises) with their IT infrastructure support (e.g. point of sale systems and website/database regarding each stores' inventory).
My thoughts are they need to really embrace the retro aesthetic and experience of what the stores used to be since most new gamers are buying digital anyway. They could hopefully get the video game companies involved to make NEW OLD merchandise and promo materials. Maybe gamestops future better serves as a retro game cafe than as a retailer. As of now they still don't have an identity for how they want to go about it between treating it as a goodwill bin display or boutique collector store pricing.
Dope vid man! Really enjoyed seeing game cube games and how hype you got when you saw them. I remember telling my mom there was no school day after Halloween so I could stay home, play video games and eat candy all day!

We have a small local chain called Game Pawn there real frustrating they can have a nice clean cib game and have the identical game say disc or cartridge with reprinted cover art and be charging the exact same price for both. Plus there prices tend to be a dollar or two over price charting. I really wish I would have never sold a 40 year collection It would have made the start of a great retro game store. Crazy to think ps3 and 360 are Retro now/ I miss going to blockbuster smelling the popcorn and buying PS2 games with my big brother
Thats siiiick!! Now lets see if the Gamestops in my area do this aswell
Gamestop just needs better prices
Wow, GameStop Retro is happening and opening stores across the U.S.?! Please GameStop Retro, I really hope you sell a variety of CIB physical copies of old school classic retro video game titles on N64, GameCube, Wii, GB/GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP!! Please, GameStop, make this happen (like what you used to do back then before 2012), that way, it will be a good thing!! I'm definitely planning on going to these stores so I can embrace and relive the nostalgia!! 🎮🕹👾🤘🤟✌😌😊🤗😄😎👍🤙☯✨❤💛💯
Wow this is awesome, hope to see more of these stores!
Aye man you’re fun dude and sahred good insights, i like the way you did the editing I’m watching with headphones and when you had the music and your were talking about the games at the same time had me looking around cause the music felt like it was floating, Good Luck In Route to 100k 🙌🏽
I work at GameStop part time so with my discount I’ve been lucky to get some great finds. Like resident evil 4 for GameCube for $20, star fox assault for $20 and sonic adventure 2 battle for $30 ALL CIB
Now they gotta bring back catalogs/books for games
Not again Mr.Wright way, its showing my retro gamestop spot to go 😂. Great video much love ❤
GS never stopped taking in and selling “retro” games. They just expanded on what they take in and started advertising it more. I have been trading in and buying N64, Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation for years.
N64 ? I’ve never seen n64 at my local store
@@tfpnation6925 they’ve always took in N64 games as trades ins. They didn’t take many and they didn’t give much. They always sold N64 games online though.
Yes they did. 360/PS3 was the first systems they never completely stopped supporting. One local store here had an employee running a side business buying and selling retro in store for a bit, but he got caught and fired quickly. Maybe you saw something like that.
From 2005-2015, they completely got out of Retro. It was big news in 2015 when they started doing retro again.
@@JoelSinn-sd5fn maybe your one store stopped for some reason. I have been buying and trading in “what is now considered retro” at GameStop for years. The list of what they took in has changed, but they have always taken in “retro.”
That battletoads background music hit me like a ton of bricks brother
I have been watching you for a while now and i can agree that you did in fact talk about this before. Great video sir!!
I appreciate that!
Gamestop needs to picky about what they take in and definitely hire people with a little knowledge or at least some interest in older games.
Love your content man! Grew up in the Gamecube era, so this is cool to see.
Thank you and please go back and watch more
