The best part about these videos is how "point camera and shoot" it is. That's it. Little to no editing, scripts, overly done, fake reactions, etc. These are so wholesome and enjoyable to watch.
Any time I get a new-to-me retro console or old radio or any other thing that may have spent time in an attic or shed or other grungy place, I bag it up and leave it in the freezer overnight. ESPECIALLY old vacuum tube radios. Not only does that kill any and all bugs that might be in there, it also goes a very long way towards killing bad smells and loosens nasty stubborn dirt.
@@StealthyZombie Not really. Condensation can occur when you first take the console out of the freezer, but wrapping it in a plastic bag before you put it in the freezer really reduces that. You still want to let it sit and "thaw" for a few hours to make good and sure any condensation has evaporated before you start messing with it, but I've never had anything bad happen from doing that.
@@VanderSysDavid I want to add that the bag is a critical part to protecting the electronic device if your freezer has an ice maker in it. My freezer does, and when it makes new ice to refill the hopper, everything gets a fine layer of frost crystals on it for a few days until the freezer can remove it.
@@VanderSysDavidI feel the need to add to that. Any device with moving parts (disc tray, harddrive, flexible latches etc) MUST be warmed to room temperature before operation. When you freeze them, parts of different materials contract at different rates... so pieces that are supposed to fit together are no longer the same size. It's very easy to break components through normal operation if it's too cold.
I used to work at a repair center for Geek Squad and the stores would send us roach computers from time to time, usually from Florida. We weren't supposed to work on them if there were any visible signs of infestation, but sometimes they had been "cleaned" inside. They all had the telltale roach smell though. The roaches liked to get inside the power supply and eat the wires inside. If you looked up the customer's prior service orders they would usually have a long history of specifically power supply replacements across multiple computers.
We had a roach problem at the hotel I work at thanks to a homeless person, and I could tell which rooms were infested just by the smell when I opened the door for daily inspections. It took a while, but we finally got the problem under control and that person is no longer allowed to stay at the hotel.

I worked at a weird little audio shop in Detroit. Sprayed it with Raid and got it the hell off my bench immediately.
When I worked at Apple people had systems with bed bugs. That was nice and gave new meaning to, "Debugging." Also bugs in your system is not a feature. It's just bugs!
That Steel Battalion controller is incredible. It looks like something, that if I saw it as a kid, I would want for the rest of my life, but my mom wouldn’t get it for me because it was probably too expensive and then by the time I had the money to get it on my own, it would be obsolete. But as a PlayStation kid, I’m immune. 😂 Plus, I love the tear down and rebuild portions of these videos. Reminds me of when I tried to take all my electronics apart in childhood. I was good at the disassembly part, the reassembly, not so much. Went through more TV remotes that way…
I used to work in a corporate retro game store and people would bring in their grimey consoles every day. We'd always have to tell them to clean them up. With the amount of brown gunk on those Wiis and 360s, I'd hate to see what the rest of their houses look like. We did get hit with a roach-filled 360 one time, I'm pretty sure my manager took it outside and destroyed it with an orbital strike.
There is a measurable amount of systems which are likely stolen, if they don’t have power and other cables. Police aren’t likely to take a report of a single console theft seriously.

The Star Wars Xbox 360 definitely had the best start up and tray sounds for that generation, and I never knew the single copy of JSFR had foil cover art. Just the other day when I was looking up games I missed out on as a kid I came across 'Revelations: The Demon Slayer' for the Gameboy and then noticed a lot of games for that handheld had the shiny strip on the side. Looking back on buying physical games back then without the internet in my pocket proved quite trivial.
years ago I purchased an extra PS2 off craigslist. It looked fine from the outside, but when I got home and disassembled it for cleaning - I had stumbled upon a disgusting nest of dead (and live) roaches! Thanks goodness I had opened up the console in the backyard. It was absolutely terrifying and gross to think what state this person's home was in!
To answer your question about the MISSING POWER CABLES...Microsoft changed their power cable designs several times during the lifespan of the Xbox 360, but the later redesigns weren't backwards compatible with the original faceplate-style consoles. Plus, these early systems bricked often, and many gamers chose to upgrade to the newer Slim series because it included native HDMI support. As a result, many folks tossed their old cables because they didn't think they needed two sets of cables. Plus, they assumed their newer cables were compatible with the first-generation unit (only to discover that this wasn't the case). As a result, many first generation 360s are missing their cables. You're welcome. 😎
Someone dropped off a computer that was infected with roaches at a cell phone/guitar/computer store I worked at for a while. Didn’t know until too late and the store got infected for a while. We bagged it up and called them. We could walk by and tap the bag and watch them all go crazy. Gross.
That Steel Battalion set brings back memories. What a game. I helped a friend of mine setup a LAN game store where they has some of the old Battletech PODs that we got to refurb and put back in service. He also had a Steel Battalion setup on a projector. I think the game and cotroller cost him upwards of of $400. It was more of a simulation than a game. Awesome times.
We once had a father and son come in with a bag of NES stuff to sell. I opened it up and it was absolutely filthy stuff, but we could clean it and refurbish it, so I had a look. I pulled out two gross controllers and then pulled out a copy of NES open and when I did, cockroaches started to run up my hand. For a few days afterwards I kept thinking I could see roaches on the counter out of the corner of my eye and I would freak out.
