    If you are shocked by the prices, remember this is a Canadian game store. $100 USD is around $136 Canadian. So if you are used to prices in the states take off 30% for a quick conversion.

    About saying no to things you don't want, I think people don't realize that game stores have very limited space. Maybe some customers think that the "storage in the back" is a vortex to unlimited storage. Like he said, it isn't a money issue. They just can't store these items forever, and that is how long they would sit on the shelf. If every game store doesn't want your items, please try to recycle them.

    The refund bit is interesting because it can change country to country. In most parts of Europe the customer has a "right of recess" if he brings an item it back within 7 to 10 days (obviously in the same condition he bought it in and with a receipt), by law, no question asked.

  • @EPS5000

    Funny thing about Persona 1, it's included on the PlayStation Mini and that was only $99 at launch, though it quickly dropped in price (I paid $18 for it from Best Buy a few months after launch).

  • @LostEra389
    @LostEra389 5 годин тому +3

    I remember EB Games' full refund policy back in the 90's. It was like having the Steam refund policy with physical media, it was great. At my local store they would be willing to haggle the price on used games and trade-ins too. Then all EBs became Gamestop and everything got lame real fast.

  • @dacypher22
    @dacypher22 6 годин тому +17

    I'm surprised that "But this sells on ebay for $x" wasn't mentioned. The guy I knew who owned a game store was driven crazy by that. People not understanding that being able to take your game to a local store and immediately be handed cash for it has value. And that means you are going to get less money than what you could selling to an end-user on ebay.

    • @RetroGamesAddict
      @RetroGamesAddict 4 години тому +1

      They also don't understand, on Ebay, you have to pay for your own shipping, possible returns / complaints from the customer, and that you pay a sellers fee of around 12% per item you sell. For an average customer to expect the highest end for their games, most of the time is ridiculous. Now, it all depends on the item as well. Lets say someone brought this store owner a rare or sought after game in excellent condition like a complete in box chrono trigger with the maps or something, I'm sure he'd be comfortable paying like 70-80% value because it is an easy sell and a show piece, and condition is everything for certain collectors.

    • @thequincy_
      @thequincy_ 4 години тому +1

      And then there's the opposite side of the spectrum, where there's been times I've tried to sell brand new, sealed copies from collection, that go for $100+ and be told "I'll take it for $15 bucks". Meanwhile incomplete, well damaged copies of FF7-9 being sold for $30-$40+. Honestly I've found outrages prices for stuff from gamestores in my area more often then not. Business or not... eh they'll be alright, alot of these shops tend to look maximize profits while trying to get over on customers.

    • @RetroGamesAddict
      @RetroGamesAddict 3 години тому +1

      @@thequincy_ It is a psychology game with collecting for sure. I talked to a store owner about final fantasy games, where he mentioned they use to fly off the shelves, now they sit for the ps1 titles. I told him it is likely due to either condition of discs, or the fact that the games now are printed so much. Since 2016 or so, they are on switch now, ps4, ps3 digital store still, it is hard to justify someone paying a lot for FF7-9, unless we are talking excellent, complete copies.

    • @thequincy_
      @thequincy_ 2 години тому

      @@RetroGamesAddict Exactly. In general collecting is both a thing done out of satisfaction and enjoyment, along with the perk of just owning the games. It's a novelty. That said, there's limits to how much I will spend on what I want.
      At the end of the day I emulate everything that isn't modern gen. All the roms are on my hard drive, across multiple systems and devices, and are there permanently. I don't HAVE to spend an arm and a leg to play said titles. I find it insulting when the stores effectively hoard and gatekeep games that obviously people want for the purpose of playing it and fulfillment. The market is has become filled with ppl who actually don't gaf about the art and fun of the games but rather their value or the alternative is gamer turned business man (as ridiculous as that sounds).
      I find extremely disrespectful and I always call it out when it happens.

    • @dacypher22
      @dacypher22 Годину тому

      @@RetroGamesAddict I would think for things like FF, that is primarily the rereleases, like you mentioned. Those always make the originals take a nose-dive in value and demand. It feels like SE has been rereleasing the FF games every 6 months in some new form, or in some new collection. And right now, Lunar 1 and 2 on PS1 are fairly valuable. But I'm sure the news of a rerelease is probably going to cut their value in half.

Customers (usually the same few) would come in early, rent a movie, return with it several hours later, and ask for either a refund or another movie to rent free of charge. I used to work at Electronics Boutique back when we took opened new games back up to a week after purchase. Most of the time it worked out great and people would only switch out a game they really didn't like for one other new game and everyone was happy. There had to be those "sneaky" abusers that tried to treat us as a weekly rental store, but we cut them off after 3 exchanges and took note of who they were in case they tried to do it again. Eventually corporate changed the rules since they were getting in trouble for "selling used games as new."
    As store employees, we also used to be able to take home games and play them for a few days so we could tell customers about the latest and greatest games. Then we would shrink-wrap the games again and customers never knew the difference. That had to stop when the return policy changed. Them were the good 'ol days!

    A lot of these are reasonable things to point out, but telling customers how to shop (or how much to tip, etc...) never sits well with me. Maybe customers don't understand the nuances of the business, but they also shouldn't have to. If they're going to be an a-hole about something, no amount of PSA's are going to change that.

    I get that kind of customers on my Ebay items. One guy in particular sends me a message, "This last sold for this amount, take my offer for this.". And it doesn't end there, then I get "Set it up", "Make it happen" numerous times. I ended up blocking him permanently. I don't think some kids realize that there is like a 13% charge that's deducted from our sales on top of shipping costs. Sometimes people will get a really good price on an item if the seller just wants to dump them or doesn't realize what the current market prices are. I'd rather give the customer a really good price, but Ebay really takes a ton of profit from the sale of our items.

    One thing I've noticed in my local store rarely that you should never say or do, is trying to undercut the store on a deal / trade in. Occasionally, I have seen or heard of other customers trying to offer more to people trying to sell or trade their games to the store. This is not only incredibly rude, but also shady. The store is paying money to keep the business running, if you want to offer more or buy something, do it off property, online classified ads, or if the seller declines the offer from the store and leaves the store. Don't try to undercut your local business, I understand some game stores give terrible offers I wouldn't accept sometimes either, but, that is for the customer to decide if they will take the offer or not, not yours to try to steal their business from them.

    I wonder what shop owners think of people who mouth off the console wars and the trash talkers who bitch and moan about companies they never support.

    The reason game prices are so high is cause the super rich decided to get into video games and since they can afford whatever they want they will pay the super high price for a game that isn't worth it. I saw a guy spend $800 on a shovelware game for wii just so he could finish his collection.
    Supply and demand is basically for the rich. Normal ppl wouldn't ever be able to afford $500 for persona. If they do buy it on a whim then they don't have good money management lol. It will sell cause some rich dude will buy it at that price.

      Well, the kids who played these games want that nostalgic fix and are working adults now. A lot of them can afford it since they are more advanced in their careers. I also think streaming/youtube heavily contributed to the price increase. A lot of streamers and content creators have huge collections in their background and it helped others want to have the same thing.

      So many factors, not just rich people. Lots of hoarders too, I know dudes with like 5-10 copies of a popular mario or pokemon game at any given time waiting to get full value reselling. It is just the trend now, it is a hard time to collect affordably.

    I have advice for the owner, in your free time put every single game you sell and it's genre with game screenshots in a book...i know this sounds like a menu but it might just work

    I have a funny story to share that i did in the mid 90's in a game store.
    So back in 96 or 97 (i live in Morocco, and here we got the japanese one the super famicom) i went to trade my Super nintendo game and i wanted Captain Tsubasa, but the store told me that it's a US version and it will not work on your console, but hey since i am a nice seller here i will rent you for free the adapter and a US game (i remember very well it was The Incredible Hulk) to make Captain Tsubasa US versionwork.
    I went home played Captain Tsubasa for a while, and then played some Hulk, and i didn't like it, but it's normal the owner did not gave me Hulk to play it, but just to make Captain Tsubasa work, guess what i did back then, i went back to the store with the hulk's cartridge and i told him : "Can you change this game with another i didn't like it", he told me : "but...i only gave you this game to make captain tsubasa work why do you... ?"
    We were real gamers, not affraid of sillyness to get a new game XD

    If I could make a suggestion for a game store it would be my vision of what I would want if I owned a store. First, its way too much work and stress. However, some main things I would want is to host tournaments. I would put the overstock on sale to get that moving. I would buy a logo sticker for the store in bulk or something small and cheap for advertising. I would gave that away free with the purchase of an item $5 or more or something like that.

    So my friend works at a board and table top game store and yhe most annoying question he's always asked is if they sell video games. They get asked it soo much they have a sign that says days gone without being asked if this was a game store. It is at -3 lol

    I have to explain DAILY that all games are priced individually.
    "How much are the PS2 games?"
    "Kuon is $700, but Gran Turismo 3 is $2..."
    Also constantly having to hear "I remember blowing in the carts to get to play." Gets very tiring hearing it over n over
