How to use benzoyl peroxide for acne steps. These are all the steps I have mentioned.
Step 1.) Spot test. Wash your hands with soap and water for 30 seconds and then spot test it, to make sure you dont have any serious reactions and to see if it is right for you before going ahead with it. apply a small amount to one or two small affected areas of the skin and Do this for 3 days, and if you dont experience any discomfort or any unusual stinging, then you can go ahead to step 2. If you experience an allergic reaction, stop the product immediately, and get medical help right away.
Step 2.) Wash your face first with a mild cleanser. I currently use: CeraVes Hydrating Facial Cleanser, its gentle and has been shown to work time and time again without disrupting the skins protective barrier. It might be more ideal to do this at nighttime before bed, especially when youre unwinding and removing makeup. So go ahead and wash your face then Afterwards, gently pat dry with a clean towel and wait until your face is fully dry to move forward.
Step 3.) Apply your 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and its important to start with the lowest strength first then work your way up if necessary. This is because lower concentrations of benzoyl peroxide have been found to work as effective than higher concentrations, without all the drying effects.. A rookie mistake I made back in the day was to start off with 5 or 10% thinking its going to work faster, it ends up over drying the face, causing flakiness, and irritation. So your best bet is to go with the 2.5% in the beginning and apply just enough of it to cover your affected areas and rub it in gently. Make sure to avoid sensitive areas like the eyes, nostrils, and mouth when applying
Step 4.) After youve applied it, Leave it on for about 2 hours. You might feel a mild burning sensation and redness, but don't worry itll pass. Keep in mind if you're using a benzoyl peroxide in the form of a wash, you can leave it on for about 2-3 minutes and then wash it off you dont have to wait the full 2 hours.
Step 5.) Now you're ready to wash it off. Rinse your face with some lukewarm water and not hot water. Afterwards, pat dry with another clean towel. One downside to benzoyl peroxide is that it bleaches things. If you have dark hair, you'll want to keep benzoyl away from your hairline as it can potentially bleach your hair.
Step 6.) After you have washed it off, Apply a moisturizer right after. Because lets face it, there's no two ways to go about it, benzoyl peroxide will dry out your skin. It's the most common side effect.
Step 7.) After youve had some beauty sleep hopefully, you want to make sure you use a sunscreen during the day if youre exposed to the sun. This is because Benzoyl peroxide can cause photosensitivity. For this: Choose a sunscreen that's oil-free with an (SPF) of at least 30 and use it every day to the best you can.
How does benzoyl peroxide work
Benzoyl peroxide is effective and reliable for acne because there are so many different mechanisms going on at once, Its antimicrobial in that it destroys the bacteria that cause acne, its anti inflammatory which calms down those angry large red pimples, its comedolytic which means it opens up pores and decreases inflammation on site, and finally it acts as an exfoliant as well to help with your skins overall appearance.

I find the best way is to wash your face and put on a moisturizer. Then let that dry for as long as you can, at least 10 mins but up to 1 hour. Then put the benzoyl peroxide on your dry skin. This way you get the same effect without any dryness or irritation 💁♀️

Had an allergic reaction after using it for a two weeks, stopped using it for a month then went back to the gel two months ago but barely worked. Been using the wash for a week now and my skin looks and feels amazing

I used this wrong from the start. My doctor prescribed me Acnecide for my cystic acne which can be quite aggressive around my jaw and neck area. I applied this as a spot treatment, I reckon I put too much on and applied it straight after my moisturizer. I suffered burning and skin peeling. Now, I learned from a few videos I was using it wrong 😩😞 So will not give up, have taken all the amazing advice on here including yours! fingers crossed 🤞

@@kristychung2409 About 3 days. It was very painful and inflamed. Now I apply the ointment on clean skin on the areas where needed without any other products. I leave on for only 10 mins and wash off. No burning or issues now
@@kristychung2409 The only thing that has really cleared my skin up and prevented acne from returning is Celery juice on an empty stomach in the morning daily. Highly recommend

Hello I’ve just started using the Benzoyl Peroxide kit and I’m wondering if I put moisturiser with the cream on or do I have to wait 2 hours to wash the cream off and then put moisturiser pls help (I have combination skin) waiting for reply😁
I have a super oily skin, so I started with washing my face with african liquid black soap infused with jojoba oil, honey and tumeric, then 5%bp gel applied twice a day for a week and oral medications to kill acne from the inside(doxycycline capsules and ciproglax) recommended by a doctor. During this week I saw great improvement on my face all the pimples had greatly reduced in size. Then the following week switched to applying only at nights. Up to now its 1 month and half over and my face has become so soft, pimple free and my confidence is back. I wish I knew this sooner, I had struggled with pimples for like 8years now. Hope this helps someone out there like me too

Thanks for your question. It’s a tricky one. If it is used too heavily they can over dry the skin which will make already existing lines and wrinkles more noticeable. This is why it’s best to only use it for the sole purpose of fighting acne and not go overboard with it. In terms of premature aging, nothing contributes more to that than the suns harmful rays on skin that is not adequately protected with spf.

I use it 5% on my trouble areas and apply a moisturiser over it and the next day I apply clicimydin and sunscreen. The next night I put tretenoin 0.5 with hydroquinone 4% and so on.

@@tasfiah4913 You cleanse your face first with a gentle cleanser if you have oily or combination skin I recommend you to use the la roshe posay gel cleanser and if you have dry skin or sensitive use the CeraVe hydrating cleanser. If you like to wear makeup make sure to wash your face completly before putting anything else. You can try the double cleansing tecnique. After cleansing your face let it dry completly and then put a pea-size amout of the BP gel cream on you finger and apply it only on the areas that you got acne like on your cheeks or on the chin, forhead, etc. After that let it absorve for like 5-10 min and then go ahead and apply a mosturizer like the CeraVe or if you have dry skin you can apply the la roshe posay baume b5 just a litlle bit so you prevent any irritation. 💗

So update: I tried this method and it would leave my pimple white aka ripe to pop. It didn't work for me...but what I do is I spot treat add the cream to my lil bumps/pimples then add Vaseline on the same spot and by morning it's dry and gone

I love how every doctor preach the words of sunscreen, but failed to mention that more than 80% of the time, chemical sunscreen creeps into and around eye area and burns it. And with physical sunscreen, about 70% of the time, it leave your skin dry. ☑️
It can be a challenge to find the right sunscreen. If you experience stinging around the eyes, I recommend avoiding sunscreens with oxybenzone. And if physical sunscreens are leaving your skin dry, apply a moisturizer before you apply a sunscreen and it should help with the dryness. Hope this helps!

Hello, I have a question, I had epiduo gel (0,1 adapelene & 2,5% benzoyl peroxide) for a year and it ran out yesterday, I used it daily on my forehead and all my acne cleared, but I dont want to stop using it… now i cant get it from the doctor since I don’t have any bad acne just a single pimple and some tiny scars, I really need something that is like that gel, I bought a 5% benzoyl peroxide gel that I put on right now and I think that will give me very simillar results as epiduo gel that has benzoyl and adapalene… Am I right?

I'm sorry to hear that happened. In addition to a healthy skin care routine, if you are looking to add an active ingredient alternative to benzoyl peroxide, I would suggest salicylic acid 2% wash. It works to unclog blocked pores by removing dead cells and reducing the amount of sebum on the surface of the skin.

Hi Kari, thank you so much for your question. Benzoyl peroxide is best reserved for inflammatory acne fueled by bacteria. Salicylic acid works better on blackheads and whiteheads. They are both effective against acne and the decision to choose one over the other should be based on skin type. Although it is safe to use them together in low strengths and not layering them, I don’t recommend to. If you insist to do that, alternate the day, or use benzoyl in the morning and salicylic acid at night as one possible method.
If your skin is sensitive or tends toward being dry, I would start with a low concentration salicylic acid, as it can also be somewhat anti inflammatory, and a benzoyl peroxide for spot treatment.

Rub slightly, ensure that its enough to cover affected areas. Remember, keep a thin layer; which means do not rub fully. Keep that layer on for 2 hours (or if you prefer as a wash 2-3 minutes) then rinse thoroughly.

it is best to wait until the benzoyl peroxide has been fully absorbed before applying a serum and/or moisturiser. Benzoyl peroxide works best when it has the chance to absorb into the skin first. It takes about 5-15 mins to dry then you can put on moisturizer.
However, if you experience dryness and flakiness still, you can use the moisturizer first as a buffer, especially in the winter where the skin can be drier. This helps buffer the medication and compensates for its drying effects if it’s too harsh.
Wait a couple minutes after the moisturizer to then add the sunscreen, if you use the first regimen which was: wash first, then benzoyl, 15 minute wait, then moisturizer, wait 2 minutes, then sunscreen.

Hi Docter! Wow this is so much different than what my docter said to me. She gave me benzac 10% right away. In the morning I cleanse, use Benzac 10%, leave it on for the rest of the day, apply sunscreen 10 minutes after benzac and than in the evening I cleanse and use Differin gel and leave it on for the rest of the night. Hi Josephine. I recommend staying with your doctors routine. It is a common methodology to go about incorporating both actives. I have seen it prescribed in this format many times. The lower percentage of benzoyl peroxide I mentioned has been seen to be just as effective as 10% with possibly less irritation. However it is not the only option.
