Let's Model a STAR DESTROYER in 10 MINUTES in Blender 2.81 - ep. 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2024
- In this video I challenge myself to "speed model" an Imperial Star Destroyer with a very strict 10 minute limit from default scratch scene in Blender to finished model. I basically go crazy with extrude, move, and scale to shape primitive polygons into a basic Star Destroyer. I didn't use any references during this build so the proportions, details, shapes, may be way off so apologies to all of you who strictly need authenticity =)
Please consider hitting a thumbs up if you like this video, and please subscribe and if you want to see more speed builds. I welcome suggestions of objects that I can create and I'm hoping to make a weekly Thursday video with these time limited challenges. Not sure whether I should keep all of them to 10 minutes or if I should allow some variation, what do you think?
I don't know if I can call this a tutorial or a "how to model an imperial star destroyer" - but I do try to mention most of the keyboard shortcuts and techniques I use to create these models which can hopefully help you along the way. I also have some more detailed Blender modeling videos if you check out my channel history including videos about low poly modeling tips and tricks, modular spaceships, rigging, animations, etc.
Happy new year and may the force be with you. I prefer the dark side, but they keep losing?? =)

Come back next Thursday when I will be releasing a 10 Minute Titanic Modelling Challenge =)
Me: Where would you even start on a star destroyer?
This guy: has a recognizable shape in 45 seconds
bruh the star destroyer is just a giant flying doritos
I'd start with symmetry enabled. Then construct a poorly extruded un aligned masterpiece.
It helps that most Star Wars vehicles are designed with big, distinctive shapes in mind. Unlike many other sci-fi settings, that present vehicles as either overwrought messes of cluttered detail, or give everything the same shape and rely on fine details to distinguish one vehicle from another.
I really like how you voice out each keys you press while using them on your work. I'm like, "ohh, that's how it works".
this is your first video that I watched and I already like how you present. subscribed.
Cool, welcome as a sub and I'm glad you find it useful. In more recent videos I also have Screencast keys enabled so you can see the keys on screen as well.
yeah hahaha, I saw some of those too. I actually made a habit of modeling something right after watching your videos, makes info retention easier. thank you for your help :)
Fantastic job! This is inspiring enough that I think I want to do a 10 minute challenge myself. First video I've watched of yours and I'm subscribing
That's awesome - glad to hear that! I find it very useful to do these things to solidify shortcuts and improve skills.
Its the exactly same comment which I was gonna give in comment section
great coincidence man
Same
Me too !!
Ninety nineth like xdd
What separates you from other blender youtubers is that I actually understand what your doing. Most blender youtubers just speed through it thinking everyone can catch up with them but that doesn't work for everyone. But with every move you make you tell us what your pressing/ doing so its clear what we have to do if we want to make something like this. Keep up the great work your helping me alot with my modeling skills!

100% gonna be a good year what could possibly go wro-
😭
*Practically done* - "Oh crap, I only have five minutes left"
Outstanding work!
I've watched so many tutorials but somehow yours are the most inspiring, the speed at which you make awesome stuff, along with your keyboard shortcut explanations make me feel like I can do anything
Thank you so much for the comment - I'm really glad to hear this and that you find it inspirational :)
This took me like three hours to follow along lmao
Hey, that's pretty good though. If you try again, I'm sure you can do it in half that time =)
I dont even know how to use blender, you sir have worked so many years for this skill!
I started with Blender maybe 3 years ago, and before that a bit of 3DSMax at a very basic level.
That was seriously incredible. I'm learning Blender atm so watching this was..... jaw-dropping. lol. well done!
Holy carp you are fast!
The blender is strong with this one
OH MY GOD THAT SPEED!. God Bless!
Love Star Wars and your videos
i learned soooo much stuff in blender in just this one video
dude... I clicked on this thinking "yeah sure 10mins at x50 speed" that was incredible. You got yourself a new sub
I'd watch a 30 min less rushed version.
Great work though i wish i can reach this level one day !
That's a lovely video ! A real pleasure to watch someone very experienced using my favourite software 😁
That's cool to hear, yes Blender rocks =) Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@Imphenzia Haha np ! Since I'm now subscribed, I'll be able to follow your work :D
Have fun, and may this serie last long ! :)
I worked for months on a star destroyer and this guy made a better one than me in 10 minutes LOL
Regardless of how fast he was building this, I learnt some tools and tricks from this video I could apply to my future videos! Thank you! :D
Ho man, forgot this ended with - Enjoy 2020! Hope it'll be a fantastic year!
The default cube was thinking "Finally. I didn't get deleted." This was very impressive. It helps to have all the hotkey shortcuts when modeling.
Haha, yes, I believe that's some sort of a Blender rule right - ALWAYS delete the default cube? I pretty much ALWAYS keep it :)
@@Imphenzia I should give the default cube a chance and utilize it more often.
You can save a startup preset for new projects
@@Imphenzia You're a good person for doing so. Poor cubes
I know it was fast but learnt a hell of a lot about effective use of knife tool, inset ( particularly last 20 seconds ) and extrude from this. Personal opinion but would rather a fast session like this than a slow tutorial. But then horses for courses - would have made no sense to an absolute beginner.
Another note - this is a great example of when to extrude and when to just create another object.
Please keep doing more.
A whole course, free... and in just 10 minutes! Respect
Thank you very much for the video. It has encouraged me to start building a star destroyer with some reference blueprints I had on my hard drive. It is very helpful to know how to deal with all those different parts.
That was really inspiring, your workflow is impressive and gave me a lot of ideas, thank you!
Damn fine job from working off memory, and in ten minutes no less. Amazing!
after 2 episodes, I feel like I am getting better and better in low poly modeling, thank you.
Very, very nice video. Gives you a good feel for how to achieve certain shapes. Nice to watch as a beginner and get a "feel" for 3D modelling.
one of the most impressive videos I've ever seen!!!
You're making this look easy. It may be true that Blender interface seems to have improved a bit since I tried 2.7, but I appear to have been able to make some things which are not cubes last night and I am picking up some neat tips being repeated into my head. Good for you teacher. :) Thanks.
This is the second of these I've watched, I subscribed after the first. Love all you're doing. My biggest issue is that I'm detail obsessed, so seeing you create recognisable low poly objects is a good reminder that I can simplify things. Also love that you tell us what you're doing at every point - that's a huge help and makes it feel more achievable.
Thank you for the great work!
When ILM did Rogue 1 spaceships, they kit bashed them. They made their own little parts they could attach to 3D models, as they used to do with the practical ones.
Cheers, I had to google "Kit Bash" - and that's what I normally do when I do spaceships - I have a video about modular spaceships. I am just having Deja Vu, I am sure I replied to this comment a few days ago but it was flagged as not replied to :)
It's just great! I'm very picky, but I really got excited how you were still trying to add more in the last 30 seconds! Great job man!!!
Well done and very inspiring! Perhaps show the actual comparison? :) I know it's not the goal to be accurate, but as a proof of how close you actually can get with just your own memory and very little time (80/20 rule thingy).
Gott nytt år till dig med! :)
Yes, I was meaning to do that. I will keep it in mind for the next video :) thanks
Hey, im just starting with blender. Thank you for doing these videos.!
For some reason, this video is the only video that showed me new commands and shortcuts that I have never even known keep up the great work :)
Very creative and the essence of the ship. It almost looks like a McQuarrie design. You show that Blender is worth learning.
Congratulation Imphenzia. Great work at great speed. Not only the work also watching you was another joyful experienced.
You did do an extra tier, Just pointing it out. I love this video! You did it in so much detail!
Oh, thanks for pointing that out :)
@@Imphenzia You're welcome!
I know this wasn't meant to be a tutorial, but you still did a fabulous job of going over the basics.
Really cool video ! New shortcut for you : Alt + E -> Extrude along Normals ;)
Absolutely inspiring! thank you for doing this, I am learning Blender and feel very overwhelmed and you really showed me just how simple it can be compared to what is in my head. thank you!
I thought for some fast hardsurface modelling i need tons of addons to really get on speed.
And then i see this.
Hey - thanks :) Yes, it's quite powerful out of the box.
as a star wars fan that was really good man well done i enjoyed watching you build that :)
A side by side comparison wouldn't hurt!
Yes, definitely - I did that for my Titanic video that followed this one. I'll keep that in mind when I do objects that "exist" =)
This would take me a month. But now it can take me 10 days. Thanks man!
You're welcome. And repeat a few times and it's 1 day, then 1 hour... and then... =)
Damn that destroyer looks awsome
Thanks - glad you like it :) I should have compared to a real one, not quite sure how close I got.
@@Imphenzia the only thing I would add is that the drives could have used a few more sections to curve it a little bit more. Other than that the Destroyer looks awsome
You make it look so easy!
thanks mate! it took me around 8 hours to do this but im sure it was worth it :)
This was an awesome build.
I try to imagine how the floors in this stardestroyer are not flat..
Why wouldn’t they be flat? You mean they are not “horizontal”? Which way is “horizontal” in space, anyway?
Lawrence D’Oliveiro direction is whatever you perceive it to be in null g..
Just because the outside is not flat, you think the inside floors are not flat ? What kind of logic is this ?
Great Job. Hopefully one day I will be that skilled in Blender. Keep up with the great videos. As for all the dislikes, just move along. There is nothing here to dislike. This level of skill takes patients, time, and dedication to learn the program.
Great work. And now the Deathstar. XD
Impressive, so many simple shapes makes so much details !!!
awesome, just getting back into 3d modeling and learning blender, used maya in college before graduating. this video awesome quick reminder on processes was alot of fun to watch
Looks kind of like Disney Infinity!
I just stumbled across your channel and OMG this is inspiring. I'm a programmer by trade just dipping into modeling and love these videos. So many great tips as you go.
Really great video. I love how you explain everything you do with the shortcuts and tools used etc.
Brother love ur tutorials,,keep making these types of awesome videos,,
Love from india
Tutorial is clear and good, voice is good, the music is good.
everything was perfect.

Thanks - I appreciate you taking the time to comment and glad you like it!
5:29 it this type of detail i would never think of
Instead I forgot the entire underneath :)
Just found your videos thanks for making them.
Most useful tutorial i have ever seen ^_^
Glad to hear that :)
Very impressive! I've done many LD solo/compos (all in 2D) and I was getting a little flash of the intensity from watching your vid... wasn't surprised when you mentioned it at the end! Looking at your LDs, I don't recall coming across them, but I'll keep an eye out in the future.
I never knew you could do all this with the knife tool! Great Video!
boy! were you wrong about 2020! sorry just found your channel. love what you are doing.
I love Star-Trek and I am a huge Sci Fi fan, the Star Destroyer is the coolest for I love the Borgs.
Yes, you know your Stargate trivia =)
@@Imphenzia May the odds be ever in your favor.
This was pretty awesome, all thanks to you mentioning which hotkeys you used. Otherwise it would have been very hard to follow. I managed to follow every step, but didn't put too much effort into replicating exact shapes. That not important anyways.
I've been on/off with Blender with several months between and never truly got into it. Picked it up again a couple of days ago and felt completely lost again xD Managed to replicate your Star Destroyer in 55 minutes. I'd love to see more videos like this. Keep it up!
I subscribed. I love that you are doing a speed build and commentating the process and moves. Well done. I learned a lot.
OMG I didn't know about ctrl + ofr ctrl - ! so cool
1. That was a really awesome job done from memory. 2. You need WAAAY more subs. Brilliant.
Seriously cool!
That would take me 10 hours lol Amazing job! How cool would that be to 3D print 👌👍🏼
It would be fun to 3D print some of the models actually, I think there is a service for that if you don't have your own 3D printer even.
@@Imphenzia Yes I think it's called 'Shapeways'? Luckily I have my own tho ;-) And also a printer that I printed from my printer :-D lol 'That' was a fun project! Great stuff anyways, thanks for sharing!
Love the 10 min challenges. Keep em coming.
I like to build one. You are good. Thanks for sharing :)
love it. would love to see you make it hit light speed.
Very impressive! I am a beginner in blender and it is very inspiring to see how you designed this model!
Excellent!
Thanks!
I would've liked it more if you would've done a quick comparison right after creating it.
Doing it in another video is just hard to find (because I'm too lazy to search for something that is not really important :P )
Other than that little nitpick, great video! Looked like fun! :)
I have aphantasia and it always amazes me how people can recreate things like this entirely from memory. I always have to use references and as a result I end up being too picky and focusing too much on details (with 3D and 2D drawing). Good video :)
Shows you how much effort goes into making a movie running for 40 years, close to none.
Haha, yeah, what do they do with their time? =)
Wow, I thought it was a ten minutes speedmodelling tutorial, I am impressed.
Hi - thanks a lot! Yes, it's more of a challenge than a tutorial but I try to mention the keys and modifiers etc. to help out.
It was a ten minutes speed-modelling tutorial
Note: speed modelling means "modelling at speed" and not, as some seem to think, "a modelling video that has been sped up"
what a great idea for a video. First of yours I've seen but I like the feel of it and I expect I'll see more of your content
What a great job !!!
"That'll have to do."

It inspired me to create cool game assets in no-time
Thanks a lot - I'm happy that it inspires you :) Thanks for dropping a comment too!
That was great dude, great video...
Ooooooooo very nice, I like the imperial star destroyer
but what about a republic venator star destroyer it has a really unique shape and is such a nice ship to look qt
That was nice job bro
As an inspiring 3D artist and watching you do something so amazing and so quick. Excuse my language but that was fucking awesome! I'm a fan, I'm subscribing, I'm hooked!
That's awesome to hear - happy that you found it interesting and I'll do my best to add more modeling content :)
I worked like 3 weeks on this ... and your's does look way better :-/ Respect!
Sorry about that =) Just keep practicing though, 3 years ago I couldn't even make a single thing in Blender.
Great 10mins viewing. More please. Also could you please add the screencast keys for real nubes like myself. Love it. Thanks. Brian
Thanks! One every week at least =) I will try to add Screencast keys but it's not been working in the recent version of Blender for me unfortunately.
I love that im gonna try that as well to practice
Yes - cool! Best of luck and keep practicing!
quite enjoyable to watch actually, nice job to
Impressive from a modeling point of view. Good display of process, defining the base shape first and then work down the scale ladder. An essential thing, most people miss, when doing "tutorials". Well done! I definitely stay on this channel for a while, as it is fun to watch and i might grab a thing or two as well :)
On your model, you missed one of the most iconic parts of the Star Destroyer though... the docking bay on the belly of the ship (opening scene of episode IV), or in case of Rise of Skywalker, the planet killer cannon. No game breaker, just wanted to poke ;).
Very talented. Thank you for sharing 💐
