      I've done that too. I had about 5-6 attempts a few years ago even switching to Blender, I just couldn't get used to the interface and I just sat there in frustration. Finally, with the help of Ludum Dare, it helped me to progress. And now with 2.8, I really love Blender.

    I've never done any UV painting or anything at all like that and from your 40 seconds of setting stuff up I learned how to color stuff and certain spots of the mesh! I didn't even meant to learn that skill coming into this video! This is why I subscribed awhile back, great content.

    "There are no mistakes. Only happy accidents." - I'm sure Bob Ross wasn't thinking of a low-poly spaceship when he said that, but it fits here too!

  • @carodan1
    @carodan1 4 роки тому +11

    I think possibly the most valuable aspect of this is the idea of using limited toolsets and processes (simple extrusions, insets, translations and scaling along with the mirror modifier) to quickly establish base shapes. It's not dissimilar to using primitives as the basis of a more complex object (like a human character) - a sphere for the head, cylinders for arms & legs etc. Although you say you're not an artist this approach is really what most artists would employ to establish their work. You start with some kind of idea of what a spaceship 'needs' to have to be recognised as such - cockpit, fusilage, engines, wings - and then freestyle using those processes along with your own mental library of ships you've seen in films and games etc.
    I think it's worth stressing that the whole speed thing is easily misunderstood. You don't necessarily employ speed to finish more quickly, but in many cases because detailing can often take much longer and you don't want to build upon base shapes that aren't really working that well. You may well be making a model that only needs to be low poly in its final form, so its a win-win to get it finished in ten minutes. For anything more detailed like a AAA game or movie the real value is being able to bash out lots of ideas really quickly. Nice shapes in your ship btw.

    Oh man, this was frighteningly encouraging. I've only finished a few tutorials and found that I tend to forget 60-99% soon after. So, I've been redoing tutorials and slowly things fall into place. I doubt I'll get through all 100 of your tutorials, but maybe I can in a few years. Cheers to the climb.

      E - Extrude, to make a loopcut at the end and making ur own poly according to the shape of the face u extrude.
      I - Inset, to make another face but it goes in the same y-level(can be extruded down or up).
      CTRL R - Loop Cut, makes a cut around the place u want. Left click first, then set it at the place u like. If u like it in the original spot, press right click or ESC.
      These are the basics you need to know. I started out like that.

    Thank you for your video and your presentation style of both saying the keys you are typing and also why from a design perspective you are adding features. Spaceships don't have to make sense, they have to look cool. I've gone from making sad box shaped Star Trek-like shuttles to a bad ass marauder style fighter in the space of two weeks just by retuning my perspective for Blender based on your videos. Really appreciate your work.

    I just want to say your videos have helped so much with learning blender. I have tried watching blender tutorials and they helped some but were always a bit weird due to how large of a jump they do. its either they spend 10 minutes explaining you press e to extrude or they model an entire car with fully 3d rendered internal components in a quick little time-lapse to get us started. your 10 minute ones allow me to actually see what you are doing in real time with a lot of nifty tricks I didn't learn as a beginner that can help speed up things I would be tossing and turning over on for an hour.
    Great work!

    I think you're being way too hard on yourself. I think I could do about this good in the same time, maybe I wouldn't even finish it in time because I tend to overthink every vertex and every loop cut. Your improvisational skill is impressive and the ship looks good. Perhaps a few too many green sections, but that's coming from someone who tends to make quite plain models. Good job!

      yes, I agree! it's not about expectation it's about being free of expectation, just to do and show thought process in parameters and what can be done in Blender or any software with ease and very few movements and repetition, I totally think these things should be done more by all of us especially professionals and over thinkers. that is the art, accept the mistakes as part of it and not to criticize yourself for not achieving a perfect thing!
