Being new to Blender and watching someone, within five minutes, make a full set of chess pieces... Is both awesome and infuriating. Where is that Matrix "download skills" tech when you need it?! 😆
Yeah it's cool to see the extent of a program and what could be possible, but being new and seeing it made easy feels like a canyon of skill gap. Fill that canyon with practice!
The first time I tried to understand blender I felt like I had an easier time understanding quantum computing, but as soon as I sat down and committed to using it a little each day I was amazed how easy it was to learn from UA-cam tutorials and guides.
LOL, from my perspective it looks likes this is a stupid hackers movie, with a big "infiltrate pentagon" button, but somehow it's real life. Insane technology and man's power.
i pretty much just started using blender and holy cow... watching just the first minute or so was mind boggling. just the efficiency of the initial modeling was crazy!
if you were to actually 3D print these pieces, you could probably put them inside molds and fill the molds with clear resin to make them full pieces while keeping the special effect (this would probably be needed for the king and bishop)
Imagine putting a led light in the bottom of a glass or clear plastic version, which you can shift the color of. So you could have standard black and white yet also with a shift make more unique color set looks.
I was able to make an airship in a couple of weeks while learning blender basics... Seeing you do a doodle and with a single click, turning it into a model and all that, it made me so mad... the speed that you worked with the first couple of pieces was insane to me, makes me want to get that good with blender...
Every project takes ten times longer the first time you do it. Two years from now you'll be doing a project, think to yourself, "this steampunk battlefield needs some airships", and make 10 unique airships in less than an hour.
I suck at blender so I just watch this legend's videos purely for the sound effects he makes. He's so good at what he does and such a good teacher as well!
if you wanted to make this physical you could have glass holding the floating pieces and making a better horseshape without compromising the illusion, for example the horse with a cut off nose, you could have a glass piece completing his nose and it wouldn't interfere with the illusion. or you could've made a set where the negative space (the cut parts) were glass, so you'd retain the physical shape of the initial meshes but keep the illusion (the illusion might not look perfect) but you'd at least keep the ergonomic shapes. another cool idea could be to make the cut parts glass, the and remainder parts a glow in the dark material thingy, could look cool. This was quite the 5head idea tbh, really nice video and you made the the sculpting look so darn easy, feels like you know the program in and out

So physically, it is a regular chess piece without any gaps due to the glass, yet visually you can still see it.

Whoa. This is the first time Ive watched one of these kinds videos, and wow, the rate at which he made all the pieces in the beginning, knowing all the tools of the software was amazing.
I cant express on how much this is so cool and amazing, im an artist but because of those kinds of videos where its so creative and its so wonderful and amazing, it makes me want to try 3D modeling at some point because its so astounding on what you can do with just a simple concept and how you can make it better

0:36 OMG! I never imagined it's that easy! THANKS A TON MAN :) Edit : That render showcase was mind blowing, Just Awesome. Would love to learn those cam movements :) Thanks Again.
Amazing! I love it so much! What I would say, though, is that some of those pieces need those 'floating' parts to be recognisable in 3D, specifically the White Knight and the Kings. If you could find a way to join those pieces to the main model without breaking the visual accuracy of the 2D image, it would work so well
i literally watched the final results like 10 times and still in awe. that is sooooo awesomeeee. definetely gonna make it and btw how does that transition work i mean from white background to the room
I'm guessing the white background (which is really the table) just slowly fades into the tables texture, the rest of the room comes into view while this is happening.
This looks amazing! It's crazy that I haven't seen this being done before! But... I feel like both black and white should have used the "filled" models (the models that are being used for black). Just make the color of the pieces black and white, but don't give them a different shape... Right now the "not filled in" or "inverted" pieces look like a failed 3D print i.m.h.o.
Yeah, I thought exactly the same thing, the infilled models are more aesthetically pleasing overall. I also thought he should keep the knight facing the same way, because it's upside down from black's perspective. Would be interesting to actually attempt printing these, it'd probably require some manual tweaks to the model but it'd be cool to see them in person.
@@armata_strigoi_0 all of the 2d ones are upside down from blacks perspective, that’s just how it works lol, he did orient the actual knight piece correctly tho
@@SporkNotFork Yeah, I know it's correct from the 2D perspective, but that only works if you have the benefit of software that automatically switches the colours from both people's perspectives. If you were to play with them in three dimensions, especially real life, you'd expect the images to align with the direction you yourself were facing. It would feel odd to play with them all being upside down on your side of the board.
Because of how these were made they fill each others missing parts so in theory you could just slot these together for either easy cleanup or if you want a full black set. If you also have just like a thin transparent base so all of the piece is connected I think that this could actually be a really widely used chess set.
Can't really slot them together. They still share the same exterior outline (which is why all the Bishops and Kings have the same circles on top). What would be cool is to fill the bases with acryllic. Stays transparent from above AND gives the pieces weight at the base for that satisfying feel when moving them.
It'd be really interesting to see these 3D printed in resin. The black design looks like you could do it in either color resin reasonably easily, or do either a two part filament using the earlier unicode (the one with black white and transparent) or using clear UV resin to fill in the floating parts. Incredible!
@@vanillabeetle that’s the case with all the 2d black pieces, they’re all facing the wrong way. also the 2d white pieces shouldn’t really just be an outline and if they were filled in all correlating pieces should look the same. still a very cool video tho
If you had told me that a video like this would be some of the best I have ever seen on this platform, I never would have believed you but you have impressed me to no end. Thank you so much for sharing this. I hesitate to say but this is nothing short of incredible. What a wonderful job you've done! ❤️🙏 More please!?!?!
Hi, it's been great binging all your tutorials after every new video Also, I have a suggestion at 17:17 instead of deleting the loose pieces, how about joining them with planes perpendicular to the 2D plane, that way it will get connected, without being noticable in 2D
It’s funny being recommended this cuz my project over the past few years has been creating a chess set from slotted together 2D pieces! Love this idea :)
This is the way I need to be using blender. Maybe it's because I am more CAD oriented (Solidworks and Fusion 360), but the speed with which he models these pieces is mind blowing to me.
i have no clue why this was recommened to me since i don't know how to use blender, but watching him do this so smoothly with shortcuts is just .... wow o.o
not only very informative, but also, entertaining! i watched the whole thing being amazed... while im a beginner at blender, it was easy to follow what you were doing! really really cool
FYI, the "this thing" on top of a rook (and on top of castle walls,) are called crenellations. What a cool word. It's really fun to say. But forget that. Your blender skills are pretty mind blowing. You edit in blender the way most people type on a keyboard. It seems so fluid and fast and intuitive to you. I so envy your abilities!
This chess set, much like us, designed under restrictions, but still good-looking, is beautiful. I believe what made this so special is that, the design chose to be this way. The designer only said "These are the requirements, now be." And it appeared automatically. What's exciting is that, AI is getting to the point where our jobs are literally boiled down to that sentence. You just place the requirements, the AI explores hundreds of ideas that fulfil them. And if you are really smart, you could ask a design out of it, that is so rare, you would outmatch others with nothing but your creativity. But for now, our creativity is quite limited by our technique. There's things to enjoy about 3d modelling manually, but let's not forget, that was never the goal. The goal was to visualize what we have in our head. And whatever makes the process faster, is better.
i dont use blender, i dont play chess, i am not intrested in 3d modeling, i dont understand a thing he says, but i still watched till the end. Great vid 👏👏
It’s a cool idea for sure, I would love to see you somehow work together with a more traditional artist or even a chess set designer to make these into truly incredible pieces. I feel like the base alone could handle the 2D shape, and that could be a constraint for the rest of the design. The 3D silhouettes are super cool but seeing it done with a lot of time and care rather than mostly leaving it at the algorithmic method could be absolutely amazing
Since the white pieces appear to be more hollow and have more floating parts, what if you just use the model for the black pieces and just change the color? I really hope you can make and sell these, I would really want a set! They look so incredibly amazing!
I use Inventor and CAD alot for school but blender looks alot more user-friendly for artwork/creative stuff. Or at least you make it look easy with all the keybinds lol. Also, the reason the king looks like the queen is because you forgot to go back and put the ✝️ on the top!!! 🤣
If you did want to 3D print these, I think you'd probably want to change the design of the white pawns a little bit (and maybe some other pieces too), because they look really thin and fragile
I don't have a huge interest in 3D modelling and stuff (and definitely very little knowledge) but this dude has such a fun energy... could watch the obscurest, nerdiest stuff with his commentary lmao

This is one of the coolest things i've ever seen someone made in Blender... Keep it up Dude! I'm subed for sure!
i have no idea what's happening but im so intrigued
Because of how these were made they fill each others missing parts so in theory you could just slot these together for either easy cleanup or if you want a full black set. If you also have just like a thin transparent base so all of the piece is connected I think that this could actually be a really widely used chess set.
That's not the case bud
That’s the case bud.
Incredible!
it's really interesting when you (the designer yourself) also exclaimed with excitement. (lol
Really elegant workpieces and great creative idea!
The last footage is just purely majestic 👏🏼
Always waiting for final render video, you have a style, amazing!
I wasn't expecting that. I thought it would just be a simple 2D Toon shader for 2D looks. This is impressive!
Everybody gangsta till you play chess with hippo
the problem with the black Knight: the vector object wasn't rotated like the Knight was, therefore it was different.
I'm pretty sure he knows that. It's pretty obvious
thats so annoying aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa XD
this is because in 2d chess all of the knights face the same direction, so i think it was on purpose
@@vanillabeetle good point
@@vanillabeetle that’s the case with all the 2d black pieces, they’re all facing the wrong way. also the 2d white pieces shouldn’t really just be an outline and if they were filled in all correlating pieces should look the same. still a very cool video tho
If you had told me that a video like this would be some of the best I have ever seen on this platform, I never would have believed you but you have impressed me to no end. Thank you so much for sharing this. I hesitate to say but this is nothing short of incredible. What a wonderful job you've done! ❤️🙏 More please!?!?!
Wtf this guy can create pieces as fast as I can imagine them in my head…
Oh cool! I didn't know you were gay
based name
You can also use (shift r) to repeat an action in blender, instead of duplicating the pawn lots of times.
That way it can be precise.
(Suri Studio) He knows that better than you! He used shift R in one of his previous videos!
no you are wrong, to use shift r you need to know exact value of transform. in here it was easier to move it by hand
Hi, it's been great binging all your tutorials after every new video
Also, I have a suggestion at 17:17 instead of deleting the loose pieces, how about joining them with planes perpendicular to the 2D plane, that way it will get connected, without being noticable in 2D
As a product designer this seems like a very good idea, impractical for production, but great idea non the less.
It’s funny being recommended this cuz my project over the past few years has been creating a chess set from slotted together 2D pieces! Love this idea :)
honestly, this. was. perfect. everything about this was amazing.
and I wish I have owned a 3d printer to print this out, it looks so beautiful!
This is the way I need to be using blender. Maybe it's because I am more CAD oriented (Solidworks and Fusion 360), but the speed with which he models these pieces is mind blowing to me.
I just can't wrap my head around to how people just... know how to do this stuff.
they're geniuses
No, they study their stuff for years.
That transition in the end was FIRE
Dude! your way of moving around in blender is so smooth! You are too good
i have no clue why this was recommened to me since i don't know how to use blender, but watching him do this so smoothly with shortcuts is just .... wow o.o
25:12 I love how he just casually did a bongcloud! 😅
the fact that in 2 minutes, he already made 5 pieces😵
You are justt soo awesomee..!! Every single video you upload are incredible and beautiful 😍😍 seriously you give me soo much inspiration...
Thanks so much for the nice comment!!
not only very informative, but also, entertaining! i watched the whole thing being amazed... while im a beginner at blender, it was easy to follow what you were doing! really really cool
Pretty impressed how quickly and casually you just whipped out all those pieces
When I was playing chess as a kid I always remembered that line: "The queen is defending her color" it should help
For me it was "The queen is camouflaging." Keeps it easy.
lmao I remember it as "queen same color"
Looking back it's pretty bad but I learned it as the queen is selfish and wants her color
doing this without floating pieces would be an interesting challenge and could make a nice opportunity to make the chess set 3D printable
Try adding like little un-noticeable strips to hold the floating pieces, and then 3D print them
the idea of this video is good that I just hit the like button instantly
FYI, the "this thing" on top of a rook (and on top of castle walls,) are called crenellations. What a cool word. It's really fun to say. But forget that. Your blender skills are pretty mind blowing. You edit in blender the way most people type on a keyboard. It seems so fluid and fast and intuitive to you. I so envy your abilities!
3:46 hippopotamusactually stands for "river horse"
Ye
What he made here has nothing to do with AI howether, but okay.
@@DanLo-tube True, but you got my point. It was a mostly automated design.
Glass board with the shadow cast on a second board underneath!!! That would look EPIC!!!
i dont use blender, i dont play chess, i am not intrested in 3d modeling, i dont understand a thing he says, but i still watched till the end. Great vid 👏👏
LOL
They look so incredibly amazing!
ye but the white pieces are only the outlines and the black pieces are the inside
ok nvm. just realised that my comment is useless
then they wouldnt work with the sunlight thing to see the outline from the bottom
I use Inventor and CAD alot for school but blender looks alot more user-friendly for artwork/creative stuff. Or at least you make it look easy with all the keybinds lol. Also, the reason the king looks like the queen is because you forgot to go back and put the ✝️ on the top!!! 🤣
Love the vid! What if the board was glass and had a surface underneath to cast the shadow on?
Polyfjord is such an awesome name
Just imagine I spent all my night waching these videos and being fascinated by your skill, you are amazing, you got them. 👏
Очень красиво, и очень интересно, нужно будет еще с чем ни будь так попробовать!
If you did want to 3D print these, I think you'd probably want to change the design of the white pawns a little bit (and maybe some other pieces too), because they look really thin and fragile
"This looks so majestic, look at this schwoom."
truly the greatest artistic mind of our time
I don't have a huge interest in 3D modelling and stuff (and definitely very little knowledge) but this dude has such a fun energy... could watch the obscurest, nerdiest stuff with his commentary lmao
That horse sketch is perfect
