As a mechanical engineer, I absolutely love that you tried to make it realistic, and as crazy as it sounds, I’m tempted to attempt to design a real one. Though it would probably have to be a lot bigger than 1:1
I was hoping someone would say this :)
I wonder if 3D printing with harder plastics would be able to handle the necessary stresses?
@@insertnamehere9309 most likely, but you’d likely need a high definition printer or scale this thing up pretty big due to the tons of small parts, and close tolerancing and interferences. Not to mention if you wanted the thing to transform on its own you’d need to set up some sort of motor/drivetrain system, or a hydraulic/pneumatic system.
@@iankunesky6740 for driving it idk how feasible it could be but maybe a motion powered by pulling the head upward? idk
Good luck!
@@SuprSBG yeah like a compliant mechanism or something that you force between states manually. Thats the most realistic.
The transformation itself looks just magic, and I really like the idea that you can see the difference between a queen-born and a queen that used to be a pawn. There's some symbolism in it
100% this.
YESSS
This was mind blowing to watch! The sound effects really sell the effect. Well done

I do love how you pointed out that you were creatively blocked and needed to take a break. Any process can feel like it stagnates if you concentrate on it for too long and the simplest things can knock an art block loose.
Something I question constantly is why our creativity has to be so spontanious? One moment you can't do anything - like, you just can't, & then the other moment while you're doing other stuff you suddenly go "That's what I was looking for!"
This is why I write outlines and detailed rundowns of my projects as a preliminary step so I know I have the full thing prepared so I don't run into a wall. Hopefully. If it happens it's because I run into an error I can't figure out how to solve.
Wow.... something knowm and talked about for hundreds of years.... whoah....

The Pawn's transformation really reminds me of Iron Man 2's Mark V armor (the briefcase suit). It has similar mechanical moving parts, transforming from something small, into something bigger, and different.
Great job!
The whole “Modelling the base of the pawn” section feels like Iron Man to me, both visually and musically. Like the forging and moulding in the cave, but most of all the tinkering in his high-tech garage. And as if that weren’t enough, some inner workings have been gilded.
Really me too, the little zoom at somewhat in middle of transformation looked same too.
Reminded me of good old iron man days😢.
6:18 someone should give credit for it, so I will:
Yes, the crown transformation turned out as the coolest effect! It exceptionally clever what you did there
I also love how aesthetically coherent the whole thing feels, despite each section has different mechanics. This takes the cake as the best random but brilliant project/idea I have seen in a while
The unfolded "Frame" of the transformed pawn really gives off this "Faux Queen" vibe that I really like. Like, this is not the original queen, but she's just as powerful.
Yes!! I always felt as a kid that when promoting a pawn, the new queen had a different vibe to it. Especially since we often used upside-down rooks or other stuff we had laying around. I think I've also felt this faux queen vibe you're describing because of this. Very interesting!
A Cersei Lannister of a queen.
The She-usurper
The faker.
Always remember if a pawn turns into a queen, while you still have a queen, the King is having an affair. Till we meet again.
The gold and wood combo was so cool, it even gives the vibe that the pawn is just an asset, hence the wood; but when it turns into the queen you get to see golden details that truly make it feel luxurious and royal like 🔥
Nice!!! Appreciate it
I think it can be seen as a fun symbolic element of "hidden royalty".
This is a real engineering problem, not just modeling and animating. Although both model and animation are incredibly smooth and high level. awesome stuff
I like that you can tell it was the pawn by leaving in the gaps, though I wish it sounded more wood like instead of metal.
The wooden texturing combined with the mechanical animation where the object gets bigger and bigger reminds me of the Game of Thrones Intro. Absolutely beautiful and great work!
Nice!!! That was definitely an inspiration, yes!
The amount of hours put into this work can be felt
How many hours did it take though I wonder @.@

Stop deadnaming. 🙄
This is the first video i watched. To say that my inner child was excited and giggling is an understatement.
This was beyond incredible. The creativity and level of detail is just impeccable.
Now pawn to queen isnt only Strategically devastating its emotionally devastating as you watch the pawn going terminator on you
Yeah until that puzzle/endgame where promoting to a queen lead to stalemate / loss somehow and underpromoting lead to win or stalemate where changing into queen would normally lose.
I once played against a much better chess player, and I underpromietd my pawn to a knight. The other player voiced his opinion about my mental state, but I just responded that I had the intention to force a mate with three knight in the endgame.
The other player resigend immediately.
this was just out of this world and the thing which made this vfx 30 times better was the noise
Instruction unclear:
I want a knight
This project is insane by itself but THANK YOU for showing us all your tech! Love the camera/lens segment!
This is so fascinating! I am so blown away that your mind works like this. Insane work man, keep it up!
As a chess player, and engineering fan,
I think that some engineer must take it and bring it to life with 3 D printing. I would definitely buy one of those. This is an amazing idea and a majestic product! Congrats mate!
Wouldn't work as you would need non plastic mechanics

This i without doubt the coolest thing I have watched in months. This is pure genius.
Brilliant! Just Brilliant! The idea, your accepting the "challenge," your execution, the design, the process of having the pawn "become" the queen. This whole video was just brilliant!
The transition reminded me of my favourite Ironman suit that transforms from a literal suitcase. Superb work.
I believe that's the MKV
Exactly!!! I remembered the same thing!😭🫡 iron man was peak marvel
This is the first video i've ever watched of yours, and i can already tell that you love detail, that you love accuracy, and that you love functionality.
This is simply beautiful... ABSOLUTELY beautiful!
Imagine being so rich that you use pawns that automatically turn into queens
Dude this is so cool! I wanna think that this internal structure of a pawn explains how it morphs into any piece once it hits the final rank
I’m genuinely impressed. The queen looks literally soooo cool, it reminds me of like… some sort of handcrafted watch or something 😅 it’s literally so amazing and dope.
This is genuinely the coolest thing i have ever seen on youtube.
The piece, it just looks sooo realistic
I wasn't expecting to see some Peacekeeper scope love in this vid of all places. It's just too satisfying. Definitely makes up for my lack of skill haha
So much work put into such a short animation it looks absolutely amazing respect
That "I'm pretty sure he let me win" is so relatable 😂
well he did actually win with a pawn queen diagonal
It would be the most sick thing ever if someone made this irl, I dont think we even have parts small enough and precise enough to do any of this, but on a bigger scale I'm sure its possible, maybe a life sized chess board that you can sometimes find at schools or something. That would be the best project ever
Agreed!!! Would definitely be cool to see this on a larger scale IRL!
Parts can definitely be made small enough. I have no doubt that if someone for whatever reason wanted to blow a billion dollars on building this, it could be done.
I'm tempted to give it a shot... Haha
@@Polyfjord A gifted watchmaker could possibly provide the necessary skills, a large watch manufacturer would perhaps spend the huge amount of money required.
Doesn't need to cost a billion. Compliant mechanism allows reliable tiny scale springs and state machines by using SLA micro printers. I'd guess an average income is sufficient to afford it. But it'll sure take a lot of engineering effort.
I did understand 10% of what you did there but I still watched to whole video. Very fascinating skill
Very good, amazing work, majestic piece of art, absolutely fantastic!
Now make a pawn that can actually turn into a knight.
This ticked my fancy. I'm just a machine operator who recently became a programmer in the past couple years, and questions like these is my job. I get to deploy tons of methods and machines, mills, lathes, 3d printers, wire, sinkers, grinder, and laser. Micro molding seems to fit the bill for the body & skeleton, otherwise aluminum or titanium skeleton.
Now it's time to design a pawn to configure to the other three: rook, Knight, & Bishop.
You only need knight, the others are kinda redundant.
@@firestorm5371 Very rare case when promotion to queen causes stalemate but promotion to rook/bishop doesn't, i've yet to have this situation in my game lol
from this model, bishop would probably be quite simple, just a few width tweaks maybe, but rook and knight? i don't really know.
From a technical/objective standpoint, I think this is the best video you've ever made! You can really tell how much work went into it! Absolutely loved it :)
Thanks so much man!!!
The amount of effort put into this is insane. He didn't just stretch the pawn into A queen and call it done, He actually took the time to make sure it looked amazing, using panels to create A futuristic looking pawn that transformed into A queen with tons of extra detail.
I clicked on this, planning to watch only the final transformation, but the video is so well made that I ended up watching the whole thing. Nice work!!
6:00 I am a computer science student and this statement is so incredibly true, even though programming isn’t creative like art. The worst thing is these ideas come at the most inconvenient moments but you ha to write them down anyways, because if you don’t, you’ll sit in front of your monitor later wondering: "What was that solution to my problem again?"
My friend-you have no equal in life when it comes to doing what you do. You somehow occupy a space that involves being a compelling storyteller, one of the best educators I’ve had the pleasure of learning from, an insanely talented computer graphics artist/photogrameterer, an animator, a professional video editor, and you somehow possess a keen eye to detail for set design. I think what’s most amazing about the stuff that you share is your still somehow childlike giddiness for these systems that you understand and know well. You’re not jaded by the industry after all this time, and the way that you speak/teach is motivating and inspiring beyond words. Thank you for these contributions, dude. I’ve learned so much!
What an amazing comment this is, I had to read it several times! Hearing this means so much, you have no idea. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching my videos!!
What if the pawn underpromotes? Now make it a knight, bishop and a rook. Make it a series now😂😂 Would love to see it!
Sounds like a knightmare to make.
(I guess bishop only would be pretty easy)
Such a content-packed video behind its deceivingly simple thumbnail image, just like the pawn-queen model itself! 👑👏

You've done it. Your pawn has reached the enemy's side. Frantic but excited, you scramble to press a secret button on your phon- oops that's the wrong pawn.
Imagine you're absolutely dominating, and all of your opponent's pawns just metamorphize.
I js love how he even made the pawn make the noise when it transformed into a queen it made me so happy
2:58 that spring action... wow i love the attention to details
Oh this is SO cool what. The effects. The editing. The ideas.
This entire thing is really inspiring and it makes me want to open blender against despite the.... horrendous effects it has on my dying computer.
It makes me want to draw and create mechanical things, to design a multitude of minature robots for a dnd campaign.

honestly i was expecting the crown to open up like a flower, i think that would've been super cool
like popped corn....
Yeah I was thinking "turn the sphere inside out", so its individual spherical lunes would invert and protrude outward from the top (a bit like a jester hat). You can even have another slightly smaller sphere inside the larger one that stays intact and is raised upwards through the flower shape like on the top of the actual queen piece.
@@CoalOres but how exactly COULD you turn a sphere inside out without self intersection???
@@d3vitron779 Cut along its meridians (split faces by edges). When you have the cut pieces together they will look seamless in the render but you can then start moving them and rotating them.
@@CoalOres could you do it without any cutting or sharp corners?
This is probably one of the coolest things youve done. Theres just something about the way the transitions that had me in awe. Damn i need to make a transforming object now!!
