    Just got this game, working out how to play it now.
    When you draw an encounter of a monster do you have to fight them? Can you discard that card or withdraw?

    Thank you very much for this thorough review! I think some of issues mentioned at the end in regards to having it feel like it wasn't a good overall story reminds me of my own experiences playing (both solo and with a group) Runebound 2nd edition. Despite that, this review _has_ gotten me interested in the game. All of the roles and races seems very interesting and the brief rules overview makes me want to look into it more and see if at the core the mechanics are interesting enough to make me want to purchase it for myself.

      Many aspects of this are reminiscent of Runebound 2nd edition with much more variety in the combat and more to '"do" combat-wise. The roles and races really are amazing in terms of variety. I can't think of a game that offers more combinations than this one does.

      Having looked over the rules, at first I was wondering if it didn't play better as a solo game with multiple characters rather than as a group game, given that everyone travels together and such, but after reading your other comment it seems like there's more to the bookkeeping, combat, and general character management than I realized. I have to say, I'm mildly impressed that there is so much variety from what I can tell in role abilities, boss abilities, and circumstance cards.
      One thing you mentioned in the video is that you weren't sure why there wasn't 6 spaces on the circumstance track, and I believe that's just so the "hex" result remains special and gives a sort of feeling like "You don't know what it could be!" since you're drawing a card instead.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  6 років тому +2

      Yes, you're probably right about the hex result. That makes sense. I didn't end up mentioning this in my video since it was already getting long and since I never ended up playing this way but I think a valid approach would be to play with a group of characters and allow them to split up. They could then come back to together to fight a boss. This would allow certain members to get to cities to increase stats without waiting for everyone else, and some other nifty things. You'd need some house rules to make that work, however, but it is an approach that could be fun.

      Sounds interesting for sure.

    Thanks for this great overview. It sounds like this game is almost like a board game RPG "kit" more than a game that includes a strong mechanics-enforced narrative. Like a sandbox video game, perhaps? As opposed to a game like, say, Mage Knight, where the scenario goal and mechanics are so tightly coupled that there isn't a lot of opportunity to dawdle. I love Mage Knight, but it's not exactly a game where I can say, "Oooo, check out those ruins across the map. I'm going to take a four turn side track to check them out." Does that make sense?

      @@GeekGamers01 After playing it. I feel really lost, in what to do!!! despise all review that say you have a lot of choice to do I feel lost. so many choice to choose from do I go to fight a boss or complete a mission, go to town, buy from the market, and over all this the big evil start to chase you down! Some time he is catching you in first stage of game, so it's better to surrender and start of after all the preparation! Dear Lord ! By the way how to choose to play bosses. Do you need to have a bounty on it or just choose to go and fight it any time? You have 9 bosses should you need to fight them all? There is no time and how to choose between them and if so you can't because of there levels!!!!

    Hi, thanks for the vid, what's your recommendation for RPG board game?

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  Рік тому

      Hmm. What are you looking for specifically? A game with variable characters? How about Dawn of the Zeds 2nd edition? Plays like a scene from a movie. For a dungeon crawl look at Dungeon Saga where you can mix and match environments and enemies and bosses and characters with variable stats…. I’m sure there are others but those off the top of my head

    Have you looked at Forbidden Lands by Fria Ligan? It's a dark fantasy hexcrawl survival RPG with tons of random tables, and it's very deadly. I'd love to hear your thoughts on running it solo.
    Love the channel, too. Subscribed!

      9LittleBees Thanks. I had not been aware of this until your comment. It looks potentially interesting but I am inherently leery of a map board with stickers. I don’t see it as released yet: have you played it?

  • @goodlookingcorpse

    Could you play solo with several characters?

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  6 років тому +2

      Yes, you can. I mention that somewhere in the vid. The reason I didn't (and would find it hard to do in the future) is that there is so much bookkeeping already with just one character. In theory you could have a traditional 4-person adventuring party and control them all. The game itself says it plays up to 7.

    • @ajpiskel

      It sounds like yes, especially given that she mentioned playing two different characters at the beginning. :>

    Couldn't you just delay the first roll for the appearance of the Dead King until a certain turn/level in order to make sure you don't get owned right off the bat on an unlucky '6' roll if you're playing solo? Just an idea.

    • @GeekGamers01
