  • After 280k miles and wanting more power to make it up steep grades when loaded with camping gear and armor, it was time to build a 4.6 Stroker. I called Russ Potenger @ BishopBuehl Racing for a custom tailored kit including custom pistons, skat 4.2 crank, skat rods, ported/polished head, ported intake manifold, comp cam, LS valves, and all bearings, seals, gaskets, rocker arms, pushrods, etc. It would be my first time attempting an engine build so I enlisted the help of my friend Mark to guide me along.
    If you've built a Jeep Stroker, how did it go? Let me know if you had any surprises like I did with faulty wiring.

    Nice Cherokee. Wonder why everyone jacks up the car and THEN thinks, "hmmm, maybe I should rebuild the engine....." Great hobby, tinkering with a Cherokee. I drove a 98 Cherokee, 2 Dr, Rear wheel drive, stick shift for nearly 10 years. Just needs oil and tires to keep going and going. Cheers!

    Nice build. Have been really looking into LS verse 4.6 for over 18 months and right now leaning towards the 4.6. It’s hard when both of our Jeeps are low miles and run perfect. We are not looking for anything wild sense trail reliability is a must. Looks like you made a wise move on parts selection also. Good luck man.

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you! It was a tough decision, but unfortunately trying to get an LS to pass CA emissions is next to near impossible. I also wanted to keep it looking factory with a little more power. I have been crazy busy the last 6 months, but I am putting together a follow-up video with some tips and thoughts after driving it all summer in the heat.

    For everyone wondering about the fuel economy and power, fuel economy is much worse than when they are stock and you don’t really feel much more power. I recommend just Ls swapping if you truly want more power and better fuel economy because it’s almost a waste of money and time doing a 4.6 stroker, just speaking from experience.

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  2 роки тому +7

      My fuel economy is the same as it was with the 4.0. Then again, this build used custom parts that were engineered to make it reliable and provide alot more torque than before. An LS swap would have been awesome, but in California it's very difficult and expensive to pass smog. In other states it might be alot easier and less expensive.

    • @Pitstopcomponents
      @Pitstopcomponents 11 місяців тому

      I dont think so, you can get a 350HP 4.6l from Newcomer, so almost twice the Power, obviously fuel economy is worse, its a bigger engine. If you realy think its not worth the money, do so, but i rather believe a Engine-expert specialised in building stroker 4.0's...

    What's your mpg? And or tire size and gears? My jeep has 217K and time for more power.... look into advancing the time with a crank sensor mod that's the biggest power gain done to my xj.

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  3 роки тому +4

      Hi Douglas! I'm averaging 14 mpg with 33s and 4.88 gears. My XJ is a bit heavy though, at around 5k lbs with all my gear, armor, etc. If I keep my highway speed below 70mph I can do better at around 15, but thats without the spare tire on the roof rack. I'll looking into that crank sensor mod, thanks!

    How is the fuel management done? I'm used to seeing things like Hondata and Crome for tuning fuel trim and ignition tables from my tuner days, but I haven't seen much talk for the XJ.

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  4 роки тому +1

      Fortunately the stock PCM does a great job and managing the fuel with the bigger injectors. I used to have a built GSR motor in a 93 civic coupe years ago so I'm also familiar with hondata. Now I have heard there are guys that can tune the factory PCM, but since I'm not after every last bit of horsepower I havent pursued it. The torque was more important for me with this build.

    I'm wanting a stroker badly, after all my research, I think the research I'm looking for is how happy someone is with what set up they went with, reliability and torque is what I want, did I stick with factory set up on timing gear? How about cam style ? And di u upgrade oil pump ? a little more than what the 4.0 puts out will already be great of course , hopefully you'll chime back in in the future with how it turned out . Great content on this .

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  4 роки тому +2

      I absolutely love it! I've put about 2800 miles on the motor including a trip with all my camping gear, extra fuel, water, etc. The XJ was probably close to 5000 lbs. Several times I climbed 8% grades from 200 feet above sea level to over 4000 feet. I used to crawl in 2nd gear and struggle to get up the mountain. Now, I'm in 3rd gear (AW4 tranny) and can maintain speed (50mph) all the way up the grade. With twist and turns, that's perfect and I don't hold up traffic. Unloaded, absolutely no issue in 4th gear on any mountain climb. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the result and the investment was worth every penny.
      Regarding your other questions. Factory timing set with a very mild camshaft. It's not a wild racing engine with a huge cam, degreed and built for high hp. I wanted to pass emissions testing and keep it as reliable as possible. The Mishimoto radiator I have has done an amazing job at keeping it cool. The oil pump is a melling provided in the kit from Russ and I am running a Mopar water pump, Mopar coolant temp sensor. Fan clutch is Napa oem XJ, not a ZJ fan clutch. Hopefully this summer when temps are in the 100s it still runs cool but for now no issues whatsoever.
      Thanks again and I dont think you will be disappointed!

    @ 4:51 - What is up with the pan gasket at the timing chain cover? Oh, and where did your cool red valve cover go? Did you take the time to paint it red only to decide to go with Jeep's factory black instead? I liked the red cover. Either way, this stroker engine looks really nice. Congratulations! EDIT: Now @ 6:18 - The red valve cover reappears. WTH?

    • @cleanEG

      just pull the engine with the transmission. so much easier

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  3 роки тому +3

      My plan was to pull the engine/trans together, but in the end, I had a long extension with swivel socket and a buddy in the engine bay guiding the socket onto the bolt. I probably have close to $5k invested in everything, including all the small stuff I replaced along the way and a few sensors here and there.

    beautiful engine must of cost you a small fortune to get it built. did you get bigger injectors or throttle body for it? and fuel pump? if not that may be your next to do on that "ENGINE" (you call it a motor but motors are electric lol ). Curious to how much torque that engine produces.

    • @cleanEG
      @cleanEG  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks Christoper19691, and yes I should probably call it an engine instead of a motor but old habits die hard :) I do have bigger injectors, Bosch 24lb. I also have the intake manifold runners port matched to the head and the TB port opened up to 63mm. I also had the stock TB ported to 63mm as well to match. I'd like to dyno tune it someday but for now I'm just enjoying it.
