The fact that they didn't name it "Cheep Jerokee" is the biggest missed opportunity of all time
Gyp Chunky-key or Wrongler.
@@jeffruebens8355 I like Wrongler lmao
nah, cheep cherokee is fine
I used to love eating my breakfast on Sat mornings while watching these guys on Spike back in high school. I had my bright red 97 XJ back then too. I learned so much about how to work on cars with that one! Good times.
Same!
I've got a Red 98, going for head gasket in the am
These 6 cyl motors are fantastic. Not rocket ship power but wonderful torque and drivability. My old chap had a 4.6V8 P38 Range Rover and a 4.0 grand Cherokee (both 97 models) some years ago. The jeep trounced the rangey everywhere and in every way.
Straight 6
Why is this presented like an early 2000s SpikeTV show
Because it literally is a 2000's spike tv show lol
I like it and hope it stays this way
I kinda like it
Thats why^
jurj pretty sure this show is older then all the people who relied to your comment
I love seeing old jeeps brought back to life. Makes me so happy.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Can't wait for part 2.
Those engines were so good they just had to stop making them
I was hoping for jeep to put 2 together for a nice 12 cylinder motor. Sadly that never happened
Definitely 😁 specially The 4.2 Liter because I don't like the 4.0
Not quite. The tooling was so freaking worn out that QC on the blocks was horrendous and the emissions would never meet stricter standards. Very similar to the end run of the Ford 300 six. Having said that both were wonderfully simple torquey engines whose replacements were garbage. The 300 six was the best gas engine Ford ever made and the 4.0 mated the Aisin transmission really gave Jeep a good reputation for reliability.
@@prevost8686 probably an exception, but my tranny has 250k miles on it. Reverse made a loud hum noise last night for the first time. But I think most people are just horrible drivers more than it being a poor tranny. Almost everyone I ride with drives like their trying to break something.
@@lightsout176 yes I agree, I drive like an old lady, slow takeoffs and slow downs, I definitely slow down and go around potholes, I am constantly seeing people drive right into them, leaves me scratching my head.
This show brings back that early 20s tv show experience...
Thank you
Great show . Love the detail and inspection/diagnosis work. Every engine tells a story.
that engine was almost dead and still made it home
A testament to AMC's best engine they ever made.
@John Wymer the V8's had so much potential when Breedlove and Donahue were racing. Just didn't roll out onto the street after 1970 and smog controls.
I drove a smoking over heating 4.0L to the recycle. Block was cracked so no saving it. 320k+ miles
I feel like a kid again with this channel. Love it
The XJ was the platform that taught me to work on trucks. I’ve owned 4, and still have an incredible amount of love for them. Reliable and comfortable to drive. I wouldn’t recommend them for anyone taller than 6’1”
Always good stuff from you guys
I just rescued a Grand Cherokee (WJ) with this engine, so this is right on time for me!
67 Dart slant 6 Bored and stroked used for ET drag racing, would give a lot of V-8s a run for the money, as long as I shifted at 6500 it would ET within 1/10 of a second very time .
Neat. Grandma had a Dart with a slant six and three on the tree...!
The older I get the more I miss those old inline 6 motors..
My XJ doesn't make that much power but that's what low range is for 💪
300k miles and solid compression and oil pressure. Think it will go to 500k no problems, trailered a 4000lb trailer at 70mph from Colorado to South Florida with 35's and AC blasting the whole way
315 on my XJ. 98
317 on my ‘91 XJ. 👍🏼
4,000lb trailer at 70mph. I highly doubt that .
Love this series!!!
Man i wish i could find the next part of this
I’ve used desenex foot spray to check for cracks for years. Spray on a nice even coat and walk away for an hour. It’s such a fine powder it will find a crack if it’s there.
And this is what happened to your guys last 4.0 stroker about a decade ago. You started it and the. Promised a follow up on the dyno to show how much was gained, and it never aired.
Noticing the copyright notice at the end of the video... 2009. This was from a decade ago. This video appears to be "Cheep Cherokee Part 5". Part 6 and 7 appear to go over re-building the engine. Hopefully these episodes make it to UA-cam soon.
I'm glad they showed how to use dye pen crack checker.
I use it on cranks.
They should have disassembled the head first though.
Magna flux is slot better
Excellent visuals
Mine is a 97 with 4.0 with 274 miles still running good just doesn't like long hills
Two videos in one,great.
next week!!!!
I can't wait!!!!!
🤔 try a dyno run with stock tires
It would probably make closer to 100-110 whp if it wasn’t for those large wheels and tires, but they also don’t drive it on stock tires so I guess there’s that.
The Black Sheep with it re geared on 33s and a header mine gets 210 hp
It wouldn't make a difference. You clearly didn't watch the episode.
@@bmstylee 🤔🤔🤔 get blocked
Gearing does not matter on a dyno....Heavier tires may hurt a little.
How would you have any oil pressure with a rod that loose? Were there any bearings in there?
Just in time, I'm doing a cheap Cherokee stroker build on my 00 XJ. So I will follow this build closely
Change the head. They crack 00,01
Do you use the same fuel injection system or do you have to use a carburetor? Are there modifications that need to be done to the fuel delivery system after the engine is stroked?
I am only watching this on Sunday,Sunday,Sunday.
These guys are like insanely good at acting and being on camera.
Superb ❤️
Glad to see my Toyota pickup isn't the only underpowered junk out there...
Ive broken top rings, when the bearings are loose they smack the ridge in the cylinder bore Honda use,s barrel faced rings, they dont leave a nasty ridge on the top of the bore, if your gonna stroke it and go cheap look for the cross hatch and measure the bores, doing it the cheap way will bite your ass every time new pistons like fresh bores, and the block is up to spec
4.0l straight 6 engines are good motors !!!!
Was thinking about rebuilding at 4.9L inline 6 Ford engine to get it ready for turbo charging
I was thinking of doing this exact thing on a Cherokee.
Those engines are pretty sensitive to regular oil changes. I’ve seen a car with about 30K miles need a new engine cuz the dude never changed the oil, just added it when it got low.
yes maintenance is a must, but if you practice every 3k on oil changes my neighbor sold two he owned as daily drivers with 500k + on each engine. kind of made me change my oil changing habits as a young man lol.
I would still love to see you do a build on a "newer" 4.0. And address the issues with and solutions for getting them a power boost.
Yeah the newer ones had so many problems (more then older) right when they gave it all the emissions stuff. Cracked heads alot
98-99 are the most sought after Cherokees. 00,01 had the weak casting head 0331 or something like that. Would crack around 120000
@@fre0nx675 Pretty much correct. The 0331 head also had smaller exhaust ports. Could not open them up since the casting was so thin. You could go a tad wider but not taller. Due to that, even a turbo won't do much to improve a hole that can't flow any more than it could. This is why the 7120 ('91-95) and 0630 ('96-99) heads are the most desirable. They will bolt on to the '00-01 blocks. 7120 only lacks the Siamese exhaust port for 3 and 4 as well as the locating dowels. Slightly different shape to the intake port which seems to be the most re-engineered part of the heads over the 5 million 4.0L engines that were produced. www.enginebuildermag.com/2004/10/not-those-jeeps-again-the-facts-about-4-0l-cylinder-heads/
I don’t understand. Do the Dino with stock sized tires and that will get you a accurate reading on the Dino.. and the 4.0l is rated at 190 hp and a little more depending on the year on the engine. And try installing a lower gears on the differential to get back to factory power with the tire size and a lower geared transfer case for off-road since it doesent have enough “power”
nice from what 4.0 engine is that head
Wish they would bring this show back
I would of loved to see that 4.0 get cleaned
If the crankpin was offset 3.90" your stroke would be 7.8". I think the stroke was 3.90" and the offset was 1.95".
You caught that too. I have to wonder about the math skills these guys have.

Hello i m indonesia🖐 good projet
Is it possible or can I suggest a 300ci/4.9L I-6 in a 2nd gen Ford Explorer? I see the Ex's on Cr'list $500-$1000 and 4.9's for few hundred. How to: strip an Explorer for 1bbl, no a/c, stripped n simple 300 on the cheap build
nice!
Do a turbo ford 300 it'll out torque any v8 of the same displacement and some bigger ones too and be reliable as gravity doing it
Where can the specs be found for the engine? Does a haynes manual give specs for backlash and other internall engine stuff?
why is this straight six so much weaker than the Vortec 4200 in the TrailBlazer? 275 HP
You can get nice stroker kits from any of the major performance parts centers for these. They have budget kits all the way to full race. Just making a stock 4.2 liter is wasting the same money you would pay for a better, bigger kit.
When he asked if it was in 4wd, did you see the front wheels moving? No. That's a stupid questions
If you're going to point out someone being stupid, at least spell it correctly.
Tire warmed causing the air to expand. Could explain power loss due to mechanical disadvantage...and motor dying haha
thats the most well written marker board ever haha
The person they used for the the marker board cost Spike so much money they had to run over 15 minutes of ads each episode.
Did you guys bother regearing for the tires? Did the 8.8 swap have 4.10 gears in it and Limited Slip? Did you match the front to a 4.10?
My 92 has 33s and it makes way more power than that test and I haven't even regeared yet
In a previous video they said the 8.8 had 4.10s and they rebuilt the Dana 30 with 4.10 and a locker and axles from a Grand Cherokee.
To me a brand new head should already come with the deck ready to go. I guess you learn something new all the time.
@Pop's Garage Mayhem Missed that part thank you.
I like how they make them say things for tv.... was that in 2 or 4..... idk I think he could tell if all 4 where turning
Next week... aaaauuugggg!
Carbide bur and a harbor freight welder?
Cool
At 9:00 the stroke is not the length between centers but double that length. I am pretty sure that a 4.0 doesn't have a 6.88" stroke and a 258 a nearly 8" stroke. LOL Kevin stepped in it and the crew and editors didn't catch it.
my 90 wrangler yj 4 banger makes 90 plus,with 360 gears
did the new engine ever get dyno'd?
i build on a budget i built a 68 pu with a stroke 454 tunnel ram heavy duty 400 turbo 12 bolt posse all that is left to do is the final paint and the interior so far i have only 2300 in the truck
Huge fan of this project. I have always wanted an XJ but I am too tall to fit in one comfortably. Plus when I sit in the seat my shoulder is outside the door lol.
13:02 what are they doing staring at the ark like that lol
Rebuilding my 4.0 for the same reason but on mine the the connecting rod bolt broke
I wonder how much power it made
This 4.0 is the best six cylinder I have ever had. My friend took all the smog shit off and now I scream up hills. I took the entire interior out too. I can't wait to do me a stroker. I love this motor!!!!!!
What year
How many miles?
V8 swap is not hard on a xj I have done a few in the yard using the Dodge 5.2 Magnum engine cost was around $700 counting cost of the engine
Wouldn't it be bad to have dirt/mid potentially fall into the dyno?
Ring and pinion is the best option when going bigger tires...
macmcwhorter25 *rack and pinion*
@@GODIsTopG88 what are you talking about? 😆 no rack on a Cherokee. Obviously not a car guy... If you dont know what ring and pinions are...
@@macmcwhorter25 I guess Jeremiah was too busy going to buy headlight fluid to answer back😄
I had a 235 straight six in my 66 Chevy. had a Clifford research header on it. with a one barrel carburetor. it took a lot of abuse. the header was torture in the winters. !!
why?
MrMitokiller Because the exhaust manifold was connected to intake. after I but the header on it lost all that heat.
What dose a plasma table like that run
Just poking around $10,000 is a good place to start. Obviously not for a home builder.
I had one these jeeps the 4.0 sucked compared to the 4.2 in my 79 jeep j10
These 4.0L Heads are known for being reliable
Laughs in 0331 head casting
mopowah baby
That rough startup sound is normal if you ask me. The 4.0 is a grumpy starter that’s all
bearings are toast
Really, you guys can't even explain the relationship ship of the Crankpin to the centerline of the crankshaft. Using your explanation the stroker would wind up with almost 8 inches of stroke. Pretty impressive for a block that's about 9" from the crank centerline to the head face. Stroke is determined by the off set of the pin to the crankshaft centerline.
And in case your interested the first strokers were actually built by AMC power train engineers during the mid to late 80s.

I bet you had to re weld the driver's seat, they're notorious for breaking while wheeling.
Can see the coolant bottle bubbling that thing was super hurt
I want my 4.0 to die so I can do a stroker or engine swap. Well..... she won't die. I'm at 250k+ and runs like a top.
I've heavily looked at a 4.0L based stroker and I would LOVE to keep the inline in there.
But...
When looking at ease, parts availability, driveability, hp, tq, mpg, smog-ability .... that fugly LS is looking pretty damn perfect.
"Cheap" they said...
*upgrades CNC Plasma cutter table with a unit worth more than the entire build*
Dyno result seem accurate, 4L are super reliable and bullet proof but they are slow and weak

16:13 ughhhh 0331 would like to speak with you sir
You can keep your 0331(especially the non-TUPY ones).
@@grad0n I just replaced my 0331 with a 0630 in my 2000 XJ.
Chuck Staudenmaier I put about 25 hours into porting and polishing the 0630 that was in my stroker. These vids have shown that an Edelbrock alu head out the box flows as good as a ported 0630&7120. Newcomer’s worked-over Edelbrock flow numbers obviously are amazing.
Proof a 4.0 will not leave you stranded. That thing was near death and still gave 5 dyno pulls
Always scratch my head when people talk about horsepower in the same sentence as an L6. Not what they do well....they make torque. LOTS of torque!
Stroking it was the perfect idea. Assume if they want horses they're gonna have to get some better valves and MUCH stronger springs in there to deal with the RPMS. Doesn't matter though, once built, it'll climb trees even if it won't drag race.
Talked a buddy of mine into building his 292 (C10) and turbo'ing it. Thanks to Powernation, no less.

gearing is everything.ewsily cuts power in half with those tires..lol no mention of a gear swap
Is that not the 1:21 swap they did?
Damn! My V-twin motorcycle makes about that much power!
My 800cc 3 cylinder makes more HP and not too much less torque. About 85hp and 50lb/ft at the wheel.

How about a 50's Dodge power wagon 230 c.i. flathead 6?
Farts have more HP and torque.
@@ineffable1129 don't use HP and torque to compensate for your insecurities...
With their budget one would think they would have a few bucks in quarters and spray it down at the car wash before putting it in the dyno. Nothing like sand and rocks shooting off the tires at 80 mph on the dyno.
