LEICA M LENSES ON THE LEICA SL2 - REVIEW AND SAMPLE PHOTOS
Kai shout out was genuinely hilarious ifykyk. Also accept no substitute, if you want wild character bokeh plus high contrast and sharpness there is no other game in town
Adam, is the Noctilux’s color fringing due to lateral or longitudinal chromatic aberration, or both? It looks at least like longitudinal.
A handgrip and thumb support would make the Noctilux feel more comfortable in hand.
I just scored a mint condition pre-owned silver Noctilux-M 50 mm f/0.95 and it’s on the way here. From earlier tests I did with a friend’s f/0.95, I know it’ll render much differently than my Noctilux f/1 and f/1.2 and Summilux-M lenses.
Working professionally with an m10r every day since 3 years (portraits/press) I thought people would react diffrently to it. The ones that know what it is always think it's great and react very positively, and the ones that don't know the brand like it too and think it's beautiful. The only people that ever hate on it are other photographers. I mostly is alongside my nikon, mostly with the 35, sometimes a 50. It very unobtrusive and a joy to work with. I think your review is very good!
This lens is beautifully made, feels very solid and even if big is perfectly balanced on an m240. I took it in silver like my body and what a look. It could be the Q with a 35mm that Leica never did and I don t understand why… they did the Q3 with a 43mm with is far less interesting for me.
great video! Quick question: Which priority mode (PASM) do you use when shooting with the Leica SL adapted? Can you also shoot in A with the original Leica adapter and Leica lenses, since they recognize the lens? I currently own the Novoflex adapter with the 50mm 2.2 Skopar and (unless I haven't figured it out yet) can't shoot in A (ISO goes crazy there and stays at 100 so my shutter speed is incredibly slow) and now use S-priority for that as I don't want to give up the auto iso and want to have some auto.mode in there. I would be very grateful for your experience and answer. Maybe there will be another video on this. Thanks to you!
Hey, thanks for watching. I’m usually shooting in A mode and M mode if not. The Leica adapter doesn’t seem to exhibit any of those issues.
I see a second drawback for film makers, that's the distortion outside focusing zone. I have that kind of distortions with a 1974 nikkor SC 35 1.4. But think it's more crazy and artistic with the $300-400 like nikkor legend. So more usable and powerful as a tool. I'm living in a super 35 world with speed booster added.
Theres no way you can trick us guy with supermarket gimmicky whatever products. Thanks for the pics that say it all.
I would rather live with a 39,74 1.4, weighting 450g than a tiny 40 2.8... Not giving away any brand, you find yourself. That's part of your talent.
If someone is considering M10 ownership, this is the first video they should watch. Kudos on a human scaled review, that truly captures digital M ownership. Neither bogged down in tech , nor simply fan boy obsession. I have owned an M-9 (retained) a pair of 240s, an M10 and M10P (retained). The P is a camera i simply cannot put down.
any idea how this compares with the APO 50 summicron SL on an SL camera?
Not available in m mount but I'd love to see a comparison between the noctilux and the brightin star 50mm f/0.95 full frame. Even cheaper than the ttartisan somehow
I wonder how the KamLan 28/1.4 would compare. Many reviewers speak highly of that manual-focus lens, including Dustin Abbott. Introduced 7 years ago at $200, it now sells for less than $100.
Does it do back button AF?
Nice review, but the comment about Japanese lenses not having nice glow is real Leica poshness
how about the character of this lens compares to voigtlander28 mm f 1.5 ?
This video was 32 minutes long yet each word felt necessary. Great video! Thank you.
I really appreciate it. I tried to make it comprehensive without being boring.
Thanks for the insights, really helpful tips :)
I am going to be buying this lens this week, having just purchased a Leica M6 and after your comprehensive review thank you very much. A viewer from Northern Spain
You apparently had to make some written corrections to the video that not everyone will notice. That is a bit sloppy, degrades your video and might suggest bias. Pity.
Oddly realized you were left eye dominant even on a rangefinder from this video haha
The older, "fatter" PD anchor cords surely can't fit. It looks impossible. But NO, this absolutely works. Thank you - a must have hack for the very tiny lugs on the trendy X100VI.
I don't think i will buy this viewfinder then! thanks. I once took shots of someones kids and the father loved them and asked what camera i used. I said its not a big deal and a camera is a tool etc. He persisited and i finally said it was a Nikon. He was going to be Leica Maketing director in USA....if I had been more impressed maybe he would have given me one...although i would have sold it and used the Nikon.!
Nah. There are better. The 1.2..
It's fabulous but, be careful, if you try the double aspherical you will go utterly nuts.
How does the Simera 35mm 1.4 compare to the Nokton 1.5? Are you still using the Nokton? Thanks
actually... I like the TTartisan better according to this review. I have the 35mm F/0.95 for my X-T5 and it's a very interesting lens, probably not the same quality that what they have made for Leica mount though
When I pause to look at your comparison shots, UA-cam UI pops up and covers the text you put in to identify which camera shot which image. Just letting you know, it's hard to see what was shot by what camera because I have to pause the video.
It’s interesting why to buy this lens for Canon if RF 50 mm 1.2 L has sharp image wide open, no chromatical aberration and flaring and cost same as Voit 50 mm 1.0
Genius
sheesh bro idk how you did it, I just got the new x100vi and the peak design camera strap and it has not been pulling through even with the floss, ill have to give it a 3rd try
Thanks for the review. It was helpful. I'll stick with my sumicron. I do not think i need such a lens for my Leica; i'll use my GFX and the 80 1.7 for shallow depth of field. PS: the only country on the planet that uses imperial is the USA; stick to metric! ;-)
Can you make a Short of the dog popping at the beggining? hahahaha it was great. What´s his/her name?
Haha that’s Hillary Fluff! She’s usually on my lap while I film. She’s definitely got a few cameos on my channel 🤫
Great review and wonderful photos. I use this lens on a Minolta CLE and plan to use it even more there on film and on the SL and CL/TL2 on digital.
Love my M10, I won't upgrade until it dies. I don't have an issue shooting up to 12,500 as long as the exposure is okay, you get some grain but it's not horrible (you wouldn't use it for commercial work though) and if it's in black and white even better. If needed the new AI denoise in LR will do AMAZING work. Mine needed a vertical alignment but its super easy, its under the Leica dot in front. Just gently turn it off with some chop sticks and adjust like 1/16 of a turn in the direction needed.
The denoise ai is really handy! Glad you’re enjoying the M10. Also you can just unscrew the top plate with the two torx screws under the baseplate. It gives you quick access to the vertical alignment.
what strap are you using?
A cooph strap in the logo
I enjoyed this review very much. I'm on the verge to selling my Sony gear in order to jump into an M10. I hope I still manage to photograph music festivals with it.
If you’re considering it, you won’t regret it! I bring mine everywhere with no issues, even to shows.
I hope they re-release the 35mm without the infinity lock. :-)
I hear ya!
Thanks for sharing your updated thought! :) Your review of the 28 1.4 Simera was one of the video, which decided to get the lens for my kit. And yeah, for that price point is so much fun And now I probably will get the 50mm 1.4 and in contrast to you, I will probably sell my 50mm 1.4 Lux ASPH for it. Simple reason is that I currently only shoot film on my Ms (for digital I lately got the Q3 43). And since I'm a hobbiest and don't do any paid work, I don't need that Leica extra quality and I'm honest to myself - I don't see the difference in daily use, specially on film :) and the extra money would fill up the hole a bit, which the Q3 43 caused :D xD I'm curious when Thypoch will release the Summicron equivalent line up :D And also in this comment again :P : I'm very curious about your upcoming M10R video :). A bit of off topic, but I would also love to see your opinion / thoughts about the Leica Monochrome cameras or simply your reaction to Leica Monochrome files. If I see it correctly there is currently no video from you yet :) Keep up your great work!
The manufacturer pronounces the name with a D sound: Dhy Pok. Although, my preferred pronunciation is "Thai pooch".
And here I was thinking it should’ve even been pronounced “Thy-pock“…can’t help but think of that Marge Simpson quote where she says “run like the wind”
Am I right in assuming that they wouldn’t add much over a leica lens for the ones of us who own one?
They have a few features that Leica lenses don’t have: Declicking aperture, internal focusing (that’s a big one), 14 rounded aperture blades, close focusing(28mm summilux is the last one). All for 1/4-1-8 of the price of a Leica lens. Depends on your budget and needs. I for one am happy enough with the Thypoch alternatives.
@@GenericPhotographer sorry - what’s internal focusing?
@@pmgalves1977 the lens doesn't extend or contract physically when focusing. Only the elements inside the lens do. Which is better for weather sealing and weight shifting.
They aren't a new company, they're originally a cinematography lens manufacturer.
Thypoch is, DZO has been around for a decade. Kinda like what cosina is to voigtlander and zeiss
@GenericPhotographer .. Basically yes.
Cant wait to hear your thoughts on the M10R... about to complete 1 year with mine... dream camera, hope to have it for many years. No lust for M11 at all... - Hope Typoch keeps at it with more... I've turned to Voigtlander when not Leica but looking to try Typoch lenses... might have to try the 35mm
I'm so glad you love the M10R, actually chose the M10-R over the M11. Thypoch and Voigtlander are now my go to non-Leica glass and I'm excited to see what Typoch will release next!
salamalekum
Ciao bello!
Is it rangefinder coupled? Would make a nice little 23mm on my Epson.
@@lukebusellato2542 it sure is!
Great video Andrew, liked your perspective on this little lens :) Did you used it mainly on liveview or as you said point and shoot by eyeballing through the viewfinder, since the M usually don't have frame lines for ultra wide lenses? I might try this lens out on my M8, that would make it about 20mm. But first my M8 has to return back to me from Wetzlar :') Might sound annoying, but I'm still patiently waiting for your M10R video :D Keep up your great work!
I used liveview when framing was critical but after a while you get used the fov and start to predict what will be in frame. 21mm is one of my favorite focal lengths and a must have. This would pair nicely on your m8! And yeah I’m still gathering my thoughts on the M10R! Soooon 😘
Hello, I noticed you changed to M10-R Black paint version. Would you talk a bit more on this camera? Why would you choose this over the M11 or M11-P? Will you keep this camera for long? Thank you.
Good eye! I guess I should make a video on that haha. As good as the M11 series is, I never bonded with it like I did with the M10 cameras. The files were a bit too digital, the software bugs, the shutter sound, the delay and the startup times bugged me for starters. Whereas I feel like the M10 series did it rather perfectly with only a few compromises. I would love the menu of the M11, as would I welcome the screen and internal storage. Otherwise the M10-R is pretty much the perfect digital M and in black paint I'd say it is my personal dream camera. It feels like a perfect blend of analog and digital and the files are absolutely delightful (as where the ones from the M10). I know that I am not the only one who thinks so too...there is a reason why the M10-R cameras are holding their value so well ;)
@@GenericPhotographercould you explain more about the difference you felt in the files you got from the M11 vs M10-R? I'm in the market for a M mount and I'm between these two
I love what you've done with this lens. The pix were unique and inspired.
Thank you for the kind words! Really found this super wide inspiring!
