    Between voigtlander 28mm f1.5 type I and type II, silver vs black, this is a tough decision. I chose the 35mm f1.5 type II black paint for it small size and compactness not too much weight, but I can't decide on the 28mm. 28mm f1.5 is larger and heavier than the 35mm.

    I wish you set this up better with how out of shape your cron is, as my in good shape cron (tho missing a chunk of the coating inside the lens from a recent CLA) definitely doesn’t look anything near like that. So maybe a CLA would help yours out also! Because frankly there might be other haze rather than the scratches causing that glow.

    From 45 years of experience I have learned that 28 and 50mm focal length for full frame sensor Cameras (24x36mm), they are more or less useless, they always seems either too long or too short, clumsy ! Now I use 21mm (sometimes 24mm), 35mm and 55, 65 or 85mm Lenses, basically any Lens shorter or longer than 28 and 50mm !

    Nice review. Vintage lenses like these offer two advantages: their low cost and an immediate vintage look. I recently picked up a Leitz Hektor-LTM 135 mm f/4.5 lens at Leica Wetzlar, and it certainly is a different tool than the modern Leica telephotos lenses (e.g., APO-Telyt-M 135 mm f/3.4 and APO- Summicron-M 90 mm f/2). It’s definitely a keeper and I’m on the lookout for more Leitz/ Leica vintage lenses. That said, the Macro-Elmar 90 mm f/4 (plus a Leica Macro Adapter M) is an impressive lens.

    Interesting video but it need some extra comment to get things straight (this not meant as critic cause your test and comment is solid). Now you are testing the lenses on a M10-R which is not a perfect choice for testing vintage lenses since it has a 40 MP sensor and therefor more of the flaws of the vintage lens will show which you really don't want to see, for vintages lenses stay at 24 MP or below, (yes below will make you even more happy hehe ) The only things really matter in general on these older F2 lenses in basically F2, F2.8 and maybe F4 (but then when we test close to mint lenses), if that is good often 5.6 and up will be good too (basically when you go higher to get real sharp images you would not use an vintage lens anyway IMO). Crons are know for their more (beautiful) soft looks so we have to take that in consideration. If you want crisp super sharp, from 1.4 up, Lux is your best friend. In your case the vintage lens had some rough times so give it a break, But your F8 test is legit to see what is still capable of that oldie. What wonders me when people test Nocticlux lenses at F4 or higher, you don't spend $/€ 13K on a 0.95, 1 or 1.25 lens for shooting at F8. Small comment on Chromatic Aberration, as long as it it Lateral it can be fixed in post (fringing) , but Longitudinal will give you blurry edges and can not be corrected. (maybe with sharpening and/or structure but you don't want to go that way, just call it dreamy) Good job overall, hope your take my comments as an add on and not as critique, you are doing a great job, glad I subscribed recently due one of your other good vids. Have a nice weekend and keep up the good work.

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer 11 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment! Very well said. It’s funny since I only recently got the M10R and have been reviewing all my videos with the M10. Some lenses are performing better on the 40mp sensor while others are not. But it facilitates my findings having that extra detail at my disposal. I’m pretty sure that you mean summilux lenses are know for their soft looks, Summicron lenses are usually more neutral and all about their performance. Which this Summicron was state of the art for at the time. And agreed about using a fast lens stopped down, I echo that with every fast lens I review, no point in carrying that extra weight if you don’t plan on using it wide open mostly.

    The SL3 is too expensive, the EVF and IBIS is not as good as the SONY A7V, evn the dynamic range of the SL3 is slightly less than the SONY, so about double the money to have a small red dot on your Camera, NO ! I have the SONY A7RV, it is an excellent Camera and the Lenses you can get to it is outstanding good, fx ZEISS, Voigtländer APO-Lanthar and SONY GM Lenses. I have had many Cameras through 45 years, Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Olympus, Leica, Hasselblad and I used large format 4x5" and 5x7" Cameras as a professional photographer, but the SONY A7RV are the best Camera that I have worked with ! Remember that in the 1970´s and the 1980´s, it was more or less Minolta that saved Leica ! SONY bought Minolta.

    • @GenericPhotographer
      @GenericPhotographer 11 днів тому

      It wasn’t always easy for Sony either. I’ve been shooting Sony since 2008 and I’ve definitely had my issues with them, especially for long term support. That said my A7rV is still my favorite tool. I just wish it inspired me more…and that’s what I’m hoping the Leica can do. Leicas have never been about spec sheets but rather they prioritize the experience and creative process. All digital cameras are more or less early capable of producing quality images. It’s just tech and user experience that differentiates them at this rate. I don’t plan on buying a SL3 personally but it’s nice to know that I could find something comparable in the Leica world.

    I was looking for a 90mm lens for my Leica M2. Was considering the Jupiter 85mm and other third party options until I came across one of these (from 1958) on eBay. I cant believe the price was only around 30 gbp more than the Jupiter. Thanks for the quick review, cant wait to test it :D. Oh btw, sweet Hexar <3 . I have the Classic 120y anniversary one with serial number 0000120, in minty conditions. The Hexar is so much fun to shoot with.

    Oh, I just heard that it’s rangefinder coupled.

    Does the lens couple with the Leica M6 split image focus? Or is it zone focus?

    Great review. I know it is a different camera system, but you might want to try the Sony 50 f/1.2. The Sony FE mount is obviously a totally different type of camera system compared to Leica M, but this one lens alone is reason enough to pick up a Sony and give it a try. One of the huge advantages of the Sony is perfect focus on nearly every exposure even wide-open at f\1.2. All the best.

      For sure, been shooting Sony professionally since 2008 actually. The 50 1.2 is a gem. I’ve just never been able to vibe with autofocus lenses. The only af lens I have is the 24-70gmii despite the fact that I currently use three Sony bodies. Peaking and magnifying on Sony is just so quick and I take fewer shots when I manually focus. Less spraying and praying and more engaging experience when I manual focus.

    For the size and the fact you can get a brass version, I bought the Voightlander- but I also have a number of 7 Artisans black mist filters to use on it, so I think it should be able to achieve the more cine look using the filters and not have to deal with the Thypochs poorer ergonomics. Both lenses are amazing though... good times!

    Hi Andrew, thanks to your video reviews I just purchased the Voigtlander 28mm F1.5 from Camtec. I ordered the silver brass version. I received it today (I’m in Ottawa) and it is lovely on my M11-P. I let Camtec know you were the inspiration and they included a lovely Leica hat with my order. Thanks for all your videos. Looking forward to you reviewing the Voigtlander 50mm F2.2 when it becomes available.

      Hey David, so glad to hear that you had a great experience with Camtec! Thank you for mentioning me and enjoy that lens! See you around!

    Great video. Detailed but not boring or long winded. Just yesterday, I got a great deal on a new f4 version of the Voigtlander for my Sony a7Cii, to complement my Sony 20mm f1.8. I’ll use the Voigtlander for travelling to reduce the overall form factor and weight. Looking forward to seeing the results. Thanks for the video.

    Great video. Perfectly explanation. I have had a summicron for 15-20 years now. And I was just thinking if it was time to "upgrade" to the summilux.I t seems like I should almost keep the summicron. I shoot more street and portraits, and itI like the extra sharpness (specially if I do BW work).

    not necessarily to get even Noctilux since I have summilux 50 ver. 2 . I prefer compact lenses and easy to focus
