I was in a similar situation about 15 years ago with mk3 Mondeo. My wife lost her job (and her company car) so we bought the Mondeo for £900, ran it for 3 years and spent about £600 on maintenance over that time. It was a bit scabby, but utterly reliable, we called it The Dog's Taxi as it carted the stinking hound about and did many tip runs too. It was very liberating to have a car that you didn't care too much about the bodywork, every panel had something wrong, so the odd dink in Tesco's car park wasn't the end of the world.

They’ve got enough features for modern motoring, no major faults and are surprisingly resilient to even the most care free owners deferring maintenance on them. I drive the same car, a 2004 TDi , and it's even the same colour. It's comfortable, carries no end of stuff, reliable and gives me an average of 50mpg, most of which is town driving. On a run, I'll get 57+ mpg. In February, with 145k on the clock, it needed a new clutch and dual mass flywheel, as well a window regulator and new mirror. The bill was £1,100. Was this a silly spend? I don't think so. If I hadn't had the work done, the car was scrap. Mine doesn't have the rust that your one has, and I know it's solid underneath. So I spent the money and have a car that will likely give me several more years motoring. In any case, what could I have bought for £1,100? Not much, other than yours perhaps. The likely alternative was to go out spend £5 to £7k on a newer car.

I did a double take when I saw this. My wife had an identical Passat, Highline, 2006 55 plate, same colour etc for 16 years, sold it a couple of years ago, and until I saw the reg number thought it was hers. Back in 2006 we were looking for a used one and Smith Knight Fay in Stockport were selling off a number of these as the newer model was out. They were brand new but cheaper than the used ones we'd been looking at so it was a no brainer. Never had any issues with it for 16 years (apart from the ubiquitous rusty front arches). Mind you we looked after it meticulously, full service history at main dealer then at family friend"s Audi Volkswagen specialist garage in Leek. Great family workhorse. As you often say Matt, if you look after them properly, they'll look after you.

Hi Matt, loved that Passat. I had a silver 05 plate estate like this one, with 177,000 on the clock. It never failed to start; it was good on fuel, incredible load space with the rear seats down (two mountain bikes all day long) and if a young female driver had stopped at the red light like she was supposed to and didn't rear end me, I would probably still be going. My one was only the five speed, but it was an exceptional car. Glad you spent a bit of time and money on her, which has kept this brilliant car on the road. Enjoy your weekend buddy.

We had a series of 5-cylinder Passats from 1983 to 1995. My father bought an estate with 33k on the clock at 3 year old. I bought it off him at 88k and sold it at 216k with the original clutch. Only fault was a mechanical fuel pump that cost £13. I serviced it myself. It made a fantastic sound when revved and it would be lovely to own another. The Dream is an Audi 90 2.3 5-cylinder auto. I agree with other comments, the PD 130 is the very best diesel but those 5-cylinder petrols were very reliable.

Probably the ultimate VW. My dad bought a new Passat in 2001, tdi 130 SE, then shortly after got a company Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE so I bought the Passat at son’s rates…. For some reason I traded it after a few months for a new X Type V6 which was so awful and had so many faults i part exe’d the Jag for a new Passat Tdi 130 after 3 weeks….. I did 75,000 miles in Passat 2 in 3 years, just such a great car. Then my brother bought it from me and ran it to about 90,000 miles. He was quoted about £900 for the 90,000 mile service and in the end sold it and bought an old Vectra for the £900 . The Passat went to a taxi company who did another 200k in it. I think that was the issue, complex front suspension and expensive cam belt changes meant that many were neglected which is why you don’t see many around these days .

@@hsj687 they had to find ways to meet the targets which sadly ruled the PD out. Although the CR wasn't good enough either hence the cheating. We've since found out that many other manufacturers were doing similar. When found out they found solutions but horribly compromised. With my previous 1.6tdi for instance it couldn't passive regenerate even at speed as that would make NOx too high, so they made it automatically regenerate when soot loading hit 50 percent. Similar to a pyrolytic oven it would massively elevate exhaust temp to 600 and burn it off to ash. No option to choose to do it on a long journey either so could be in the middle of a town. How clean? Not surprisingly this crazy heating/cooling cycle lead to rubber parts hardening and oil leaks. If you switched engine off during this sounded like a jet on drive such was the fan noise and it smelt like burning. Bonnet really hot. Poor car! Also they started to reduce quality from that era too with stuff not made to last as long, very reliable for a few years and say 60000 miles but then more electronics and complicated parts to break. And many made of plastic and not metal. Pretty much like household appliances. Not in manufacturers interest for stuff to last that long other than reputation versus the competition
