One of my life's big regrets. I traded in my beautiful dark green Passat saloon TDi for an e Class way back in 2012. It was a 1999, 130k full service, immaculate inside and out, and well loved. I thought they would sell it on but it was never taxed again, and I assume went off to be scrapped. Also the timing belt had just been done on it It was such a waste and had another 100k in her. If I had known I would have kept it😥😥
So weird I bought a £600 golf Estate 07 all I wanted it for was storage and tip run car for a few week, woman who I bought it off had it since new only getting rid because she wanted something bigger. Full vw service history the car drove like a brand new vw. . New clutch flywheel, anything jt needed it got, ive never bought a car when someone keeps every bill including tyres it was like a bible thick; genuinely expected it to be awful, noises, things broke/not working. The opposite air con everything worked I evan went down to Cheshire from the Lakes in it to prove to the wife how good this car is. I don’t remember what went wrong with the Passat I had of this generation. I just know it wasn’t worth fixing, with what I could only sell the car for at the time. Mine was a 2.0T wagon. Loved it, and I also loved the 2012 VW I replaced it with. That had the rare V6. So rare, the service writer I had, he didn’t know it had a bigger battery than the 2.0T version. Anyway, I love Passats. On my 3rd, and wish VW would keep making them in the US, even if they don’t sell well. Guess I’ll have to pony up the money for an Arteon next. If that’s still around when I can afford one.
The 1.9 tdi BXE engine is a great engine. I had one in an A3 neughbour still has a passat nowwith 450 000 a going strong. The fly wheel and hollow crank are the only weak spots. But easy to get replaced. A better car than many new cars.
Is this the one that was in the A4 TDi? If so I can’t agree, one of the most unreliable cars I’ve ever had, and I’ve had Renault and Alfa. By 50,000 it was dead.
The BXE engine actually suffers from more cases of bottom end bearing wear which causes a connecting rod to seize, snap and be ejected out of the block, than its other two 1.9 counterparts, the BLS and the BKC engines (this latter one is the bulletproof one of the three). In Passat circles (forums and blogs) it is recommended that the rod bearings in a BXE are replaced at around 100k as a preventative measure.
Hi Matt, could you please consider doing a short video that explains your stance on most modern diesel engines and why they are best avoided. Additionally, could you also do a piece on older diesels that can readily run on old cooking oil?
I had an ‘07 US Passat Wagon. Didn’t know there was a version so basic, it had manual shift & manual windows. Mine was the 2.0T version, w/leather & power lift gate. The power went out on the lift gate though, so that sucked. I think it had the drawers you mentioned, in the dash. I never put anything in them, cuz they were so tiny, & I thought it was some sort of black hole that’d swallow up what I put in them. Loved that car. The gauge cluster looked high end. I loved putting the key into the dash to start it. I didn’t mind the electric brake, although it was before they became more common, so you had to tell valet people how to work it then. Only got rid of the car probably due to it needing work that wasn’t worth what I could only sell the car for. Got a 2012 Passat , and drove it till it needed work that wasn’t worth the vehicle sell price at the time. On my 3rd Passat, a 2022, and wish they would keep on making them (at least in the US). Haven’t heard about overseas or Canadian Passats being shelved, but I don’t think I like them as much as the US spec anyway. Cool video! 👍
I had a 2010 R Line B6 and I regret selling it. It was the comfiest car I've ever owned and was great on fuel. I'd have another in a heartbeat. Being a 1.9 diesel that will go on forever as well.
I've got a 2010 b6 80k miles 2.0 tdi 125kw. Excellent car. I've put 18 inch rims drives great. 1300 ks from a tank 25% city, 75 % highway. 5.5l 100km. Very happy with it
I also sold my 2006 2.0tdi Passat couple of months ago. Just started having too much trouble with it. Doors didn't work when it was cold outside (I live in Sweden and it gets really cold), turbo went, rear brake calipers needed replacing. And then to make the last call tandem-pump started leaking. That's when I swapped it to a newer ford.
The Passat is a fantastic car. Especially the new versions. I absolutely love my B8 Estate. Done 146k and drives like it’s on 50k. Feels proper posh too for a VW. Glad you made this video 😁 cheers
It's just based on an extended wheelbase golf, nothing special. The only good Passat were the b5 / 5.5 which were based on the superior Audi A4 / A6 due to longitudinal engine layout. We had one but recently scrapped it.
@@Blackmamba12345 but the B6 Passat had 50% better torsional rigidity than B5. I think the MQB Platform now has the ability to be made so good it competes w MLB
@@Blackmamba12345 rubbish - the b6/b7 feel miles ahead and far more modern and dynamic to drive than b5/5.5, you really can't compare the two, in fact after owning a b6 highline for 10 years i struggle to find the same driving dynamics in any new vw, and ive driven the b8 passat and the golf 8's, the small suv's etc. The sharp steering feel just isn't there anymore... they lost something they achieved back in the day. Now the cars are so light and so have gone the steering feel, i guess so you can turn it with 1 small finger in any city occasion, but it really takes away the feeling. B5 in comparison is a heavy narrow goat with an extremely heavy nose and just plain boring to drive. (now i realise most people out there probably prefer the light controls, and if im tired, overworked or just had a stressful day - i admit i sometimes thought the car could've been a bit lighter to be ideal - but now after trying all kinds of stuff, my vote goes towards this car's dynamics and steering feel for sure)
I have one of these cars identical to this a 1.9 BXE wagon , I have clocked up over 300kmls and it’s been very very reliable and durable , Common issues are coil springs rust and break and the rear break calibers seize up , ohhh and window regulators , Keep the oil changed and they will keep motoring on and last a long time , apparently the boot lid rusts on them but luckily mine hasn’t , very comfortable and rock solid interior.
Always get a laugh (or three) out of these videos Matt, and as you say 'the real worlds where it's at'....well for most of us!...😜 Keep up the good work. 👍

Maybe it's a sense of taking part in the ducking and diving without the risk and inconvenience. It is for me, a bit boring when he sells them on to a mate in the trade though.
Great for £350. 1.9PD BXE did have issues BKC is the "bulletproof" version of three 1.9 engines, available superceding the earlier B5.5 1.9 engines which were also very good. Mileage might be coding error as a result of aftermarket head unit install. Midline is base spec with no phone kit, coin drawer etc. Good flip.

Love these cheaper car videos, would love to see one like this , which has had the Mark full works on it , to see what price could be achieved. I’m sure a subscriber would pay top wack for a car that gets the treatment.
I had a 2013 Toyota RAV4 4x4 in America. I sold it about a year ago and I bought it for 10K dollars and sold it for 11K dollars. The car was in a very good condition with no crashes or scratches so it got sold in 3 weeks. The color was metallic gray (color might not be Available anymore.) The only thing wrong was with the brakes. It stops very hard on every brake but it’s still fine.
I love these "I bought a cheap" videos. They are so educational and your style of presentation (and wit) is very entertaining, Thank you for bringing them to us, and keep up the good work!

Hi , if you have a smelly car cut some oranges up in segments with a knife make sure the juices bits are showing put on plate skin side down and shut the doors or put some instant coffee on a tin tray set on fire with two bricks underneath as not to burn anything and shut the doors . Works well even in doors in ones house if you have had a bucket of Artex plaster gone passed it,s use by date . Works on fridge containers , trailers .
I had a B5.5 Paid 500, spent 200 on bits, ran it for a year, put 12m test on it and sold it for a grand. That stank too I still see it now and again, the guy has it as his main motor. They're decent cars
PASSAT GANG 💪💪💪 Love mine since day one and boy is it quick, 2.0TDI Highline, on a long drive it's an absolute beast. 300mi on less than half a tank if you're not too enthusiastic with the loud pedal
I have the B7 1.6 TDI BlueMotion Euro5 SE Tech. I'have had a 777mile trip around Scotland and the scottish highlands, including part of NC500 just a couple of months ago. I've had a full tank at start (quarter of that vpower and 3/4 supermarket), and at the end I put in 65 liters of diesel. I drive to the speed limit use cruise control when i can however in the highland there are lot of single path roads and I've had to stop to let pass the oncoming traffic, and wait behind caravans and cyclist, many towns 20mph speed limit too. AC was on as temp. was record high for Scotland 24°C The trip averaged 52mpg according to the car. 152k on the clock belt changed at 60k previous to that, and shortly after the trip at 155k. I do service every 6 months it is a boring car (and 1.6 is a bit slow and underpowered uphill on Bealach Na Ba I have had to shift back to 1st gear behind cyclist...) but at least cheap to run. Only £30 to tax a year.
Great Video, plenty of miles left in that one yet !! The Passat B6 is a brilliant car if your after a cheap, reliable runaround but be careful with the engine you chose! That 1.9 BXE is a PD (cam driven injectors) and last of the VW TDI with the legendary reliability, have seen a few of these running over 500k kms once serviced regularly. .. usually the Dual mass flywheels go around the 300k km mark but the good news here is the option of solid flywheel replacement options for the BXE at a reasonable price. There was also the 2.0 Tdi Pd engine at introduction , best avoided due to oil pump balance shaft issues which can cause engine damage and turbo issues so steer clear of that option. 2008 seen the introduction of the common rail engines 2.0 and 1.6 (identifiable by the dipstick not surrounded by the plastic engine cover) which are also reliable engines. Can't get much better then a B6 Passat for no nonsense motoring.

Dead right ! Loads of life left in that car.The BXE motor IS a PD engine and is capable of starship mileages if serviced properly - correct type oil with quality filter every 6000 miles and the air and fuel filters once a year. Depress the clutch upon starting and the dual mass flywheel assembly will last for ever. My current BXE equipped car- an Octavia - has 300000 miles ( not kms) on original clutch, turbo, injectors etc. The 1.9 TDI engine was the best Diesel motor ever made- now alas eclipsed by emission control regs
My God , its weird how life goes by so fast. I was loaned this same car (2007) by Auto Exchange when my car was being repaired. Seems like yesterday, now they are old cars and worth little.
Had one of these as a company car got it 07 got rid in 11 did over 150,000 miles in it se spec with heated seats,iPod link and Bluetooth phone decent spec in 2007. Moved up the company ladders since but still think it’s in my top three ever cars. Oh and rear light clusters have never been beaten in my opinion.
Early Saturday morning and it still is a huge pleasure to watch Your videos. A little sorry about You need to sell a Passat every day to keep the TV running!
Estates are always useful, silver is a nice colour! The last £350 car I bought had a brand new £400 touch screen pioneer stereo in it. It was a Fiat Stilo with an Abarth body kit and claw alloys, the bullet proof 1.2 and it even had a full set of brand new Nexen tyres fitted, plenty of MOT and a previous owner had fitted a custom duplex dual exit exhaust, which sounded lovely! I actually sold it for £750. 😲😳👍 Fun little car I really enjoyed driving, was very reluctant to see it go.
Nice older cars, I have 07 Peugeot 407 2.0 hdi bought for £500 was meant to be in between car but three years later it's still going strong no need for anything else
I have a 17 year old VW Touran with 76K on the clock. Petrol 1.6 5 speed box. I have just come back from the south of France visit, for the second time. It always passes the MOT with no advisories and averages 42 to the gallon on a long run. It has never, ever been a problem, is serviced regularly by my local mechanic. I could not wish for a better motor. It certainly has many more years of a useful life in it, yet is worth no money on the second hand market. I will be keeping it for a long time yet.
Always enjoy watching your videos, have watched most of them now. One question I have was, in your early days what did you do for insurance on the cheap cars,? I guess trade insurance would have been a lot of money to start out?
I’ve had a Golf mk5 of the same era, the gear knob hat came off too, blue-tak worked a treat! The key for this B6 Passat is the same as the next generation too… I had the same key design on my old B7. I also liked the dash design too, there wasn’t a drawer in the dash. But, the suspension on mine was terrible. The sight of a pot hole used to knock the tracking out, including 5 miles down the road after spending a small fortune on VW wheel alignment! I did 35-40K a year in it and I used to get through more tyres from uneven wear. The 2.0 TDI 140 engine was good though, until the VW ‘fix’ killed the EGR valve.
My parents have the 08 version of this, basically looks identical. Just got back into driving and honestly find driving this more pleasant than the brand new Audi A3 I drove with an instructor recently.
I'm after a decent Passat to throw the dog in and do the shopping in, cheers for the video Matt just shows even high mileage older ones still have a lot of life in them.
Dude ur channel is great I watch all videos so interesting to have ur input on any vehicles including bangers which are still great deal as some last forever
always liked the Passat for what it was a midsize runabout/executive car similar to a Honda Accord/ Toyota Camry don't dog on the modern models of the Opel insignia as the Cadillac CTS was based on it

I run a European car service and repair shop in Perth, Australia. We have a 2012 Passat Wagon (Estate) on our loan fleet which we bought used a few months ago. Its clean but not perfect in black with 164,000km (102,000 miles). Obviously, we service it ourselves. It drives really well and apart from replacing an AC compressor and condenser for the upcoming hot summer, its been faultless. Nearly every customer who uses it wants to buy it!
I had a 56 2.0 litre diesel Passat estate. Bought it with 50000 miles on the clock. Got rid of it 8 yrs later with 180000 on the clock. Never missed a beat regularly got nearly 60 mpg. Great car and wish I had kept it

Not the best engine on b6 passat, car is too heavy for it. And bxe motor usually breaks under 300k kilometers😂
@@mattikurimus father's b6 bxe 1.9 has 570k km my 2.0tdi has 550k km and has the bkp engine so stop talking bs
I feel sorry for you if b6 is comfiest car youve ever owned
Some more volkswagen, love to see it. These videos just keep me entertained
The b6 financed many a mechanics retirement. Hell they were awful. Full of problems.
Lovely touch at the end mate
I like your honesty, no sugarcoating. Your channel is a small glimpse into the used car universe.
Always get a laugh (or three) out of these videos Matt, and as you say 'the real worlds where it's at'....well for most of us!...😜
Keep up the good work. 👍
Nice one, I like the way there’s a story told in every video.
Thanks!
Premium seat for Friday night's High Peak Autos show! Cool stuff as always. And may I add, on the recent Golf video the car had 'The Manchester Bee', great to learn more 👍
Thanks for watching 🐝
Your videos are damn addictive. I can’t put my finger on why I enjoy them so much 😁
Maybe it's a sense of taking part in the ducking and diving without the risk and inconvenience.
Good flip.
My 32 year old Audi 100 never lets me down, never dismiss what you suppose to be an old nail. Mine's a keeper and has been for the last 18 years.
Wow it's parked on the web of Ley lane and Hollins Lane, Mill Brow. Did you try a handbrake turn there after all? It's nice to see my back yard on the big screen. Started watching the channel to see if I could do the detective work and solve your filming locations, but I enjoy the content. Wishing you lots of good straight customers .... a rarity I know.
Haha that’s right! Thanks for watching
The trim next to the Hazard Warning Lights could come with a cup holder and Mobile Phone. Like this era of Passat. VW were killing it in the mid 2000s
Cars from that era just seem to be generally better. Fords the same. Well built, reliable and good to drive.
Love the cheap video’s Matt thanks
I love these "I bought a cheap" videos. They are so educational and your style of presentation (and wit) is very entertaining, Thank you for bringing them to us, and keep up the good work!
Bought a b6 estate 6 months ago to use as my daily and I absolutely love it a lot more than I expected to😂 currently on 160k miles still drives so nice and smooth
Brilliant video as always! Love these cheap car videos! Keep up the brilliant work 🚙🚙
I have an 09in Canada with a 2.0 gas engine. Just came back from a road 2000km in 5 days road trip. Slept in try he back every night. Love the car.
Nice one Matt - can you imagine what the owners house is like
Saw your video on the cheap Mk6 golf, as I love a cheap VW, ended up watching all your videos, and happy to see another old VW is back on the channel so soon!
Belgian Malinois are super intelligent. Judging by the interior I wonder if the dog was actually the previous owner.
I had a B5.5
Paid 500, spent 200 on bits, ran it for a year, put 12m test on it and sold it for a grand.
That stank too
I still see it now and again, the guy has it as his main motor.
I am averaging 630-650 miles to a tank driven normally but not like miss daisy. 2.0TDI BKP PD
Hello Matt, I really like these cheap car videos. Together with your comments 😂.
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video. Ged
Always enjoy these old motors videos, nice work horse this one.
Very good business man. Practical, clear thinker, intelligent ,not greedy

You Can tell by the red or non-red I letter in TDI if its commonrail or not
Dead right !
@@MrErrrust Here in Canada, my MK6 2.0 TDI has the "I" is blue instead of red!
The £230 overdub was brilliant! 😂😂
My God , its weird how life goes by so fast. I was loaned this same car (2007) by Auto Exchange when my car was being repaired. Seems like yesterday, now they are old cars and worth little.
That was quite a decent car for the price, well done with moving it on so quickly 😊.
Nice one on the TV & Lamp joke,😄.
I see a Passat, I click instantly since I had 2 of these and currently drive a B7
Well done keeping the lads working at the car wash/valet
great review and very brave to sit into it
I love your videos and you are clearly a decent, honest trader. I'm moving to Marple Bridge soon, so you will have a new customer!
Early Saturday morning and it still is a huge pleasure to watch Your videos. A little sorry about You need to sell a Passat every day to keep the TV running!
Next you'll tease us with a road trip to Monaco in this!
Great to get this type of content , some of us still buy the smokers , thanks
I had the successor (B7), sold it with over 200k km on the clock, the interior still looked new (I looked after it of course). Was a great car.
hi i like all your cheap px used car content N your fun car humour matt, all the best m8.😉
Really looking forward to each video you make!
Fun little car I really enjoyed driving, was very reluctant to see it go.
Nice older cars, I have 07 Peugeot 407 2.0 hdi bought for £500 was meant to be in between car but three years later it's still going strong no need for anything else
Good solid car in all fairness, with lots of live left in it.
Good vid…and noticed the slick editing to put your seatbelt on after driving off 😊
Always enjoy watching your videos, have watched most of them now. One question I have was, in your early days what did you do for insurance on the cheap cars,? I guess trade insurance would have been a lot of money to start out?
really loving these type of videos
You need to do a video on the Passat r36. A beast... looks good too..
You will make a profit on this v w passage.
Well done Matt you deserve to make money on the cars you sell.
You deserve it
Kevin
Enjoy your videos, especially when there is a clear outcome or plan for the vehicle.
My parents have the 08 version of this, basically looks identical. Just got back into driving and honestly find driving this more pleasant than the brand new Audi A3 I drove with an instructor recently.
Love these turn around videos matt❤👍
The VW Passat is a wise choice & they were the salesman’s reps ideal car as they were solid as a rock 👍
Love these videos flipping good old stuff
Great video. Love the approach. Well done mate.
always liked the Passat for what it was a midsize runabout/executive car similar to a Honda Accord/ Toyota Camry don't dog on the modern models of the Opel insignia as the Cadillac CTS was based on it
Now then Matt looking well, this is your bread n butter quick flip no hassle minimum outlay take the profit and move on. This is why we all love the channel no b......t, if possible can we see a RR P38 at some stage there moving up in price atm.
Cheers
Great video these are they are more in touch with what the average guy/gal wants to watch as its simply something everyone can afford 😁👍
A car like this one in Greece would cost minimum 4k if not 7k. I don't like estates but this car, especially being a diesel is a true gem
You never forget the buzz from those early trades when you were starting out. Like a first love.
Great car and wish I had kept it
Started watching your videos recently , I now find it cool to see the last service was at Bostocks in macc where I live, very good garage, liking your videos 👍
Oh ffs, Matt. I have limited time this evening, but I cannot resist one of your ‘I bought a cheap…videos 😂
Haha thanks!
Back in 1986, I worked for a Car Valeter for a Company Car pool . We had a year old Cavalier Estate in. Dogs hair all the way up the windows and it stank!. We had to pressure wash all the carpets! Sympathies.
You could make a video on: the money you can save vs time you’ll waste, trading in a car versus selling it privately
it's videos like this that really make me think i would like to have a go and flip a few cars... might have to look at your website/ course first though. interesting stuff! keep them coming!
Thanks!
Hi Matt, another entertaining video when theres nowt on tv, nice little profit too, go crazy and keep ya tv on for a couple of hours lol. all the best to you. Nick.
More of the bread and margarine stuff please. Facinating to watch, more so than the 'posh' stuff imo.
If it's a 1.9 engine it is PD. All the 1.9 were PD. They all had dash drawers except the base model, which this one is.
