Major throwback My very first car was a silver 53 plate 1.1 desire. Bought it for £350, it had a weeks MOT left on it, only done 32k miles, owner thought it was going to fail, it passed with one advisory being a tyre. Sold it a year later for £500. It was hands down the most reliable car I owned. And probably the most fun for chucking around corners like the little go kart it was 😂
My wife's first new car was a 1996 Saxo in red. Great little car in its time (it replaced an older Citroen AX). The standard steering wheel was so low , I lost count of the times I caught the steering wheel with my knees and nearly crashed. 🙂
A really good car for someone. I hope they cherish it and treat the small amount of rust with a liquid curing compound, then give it two coats of touchup and one of lacquer to seal the paint. Personally, I'd do the entire floorpan with Hammerite underseal with added waxoyl as well. Most cars never need be scrapped for want of a bit of care.
Ah yes the pedal box. I recall that from my Peugeot 106. A great little car at the time. Speaking of the Ford Puma, the blob, not the cool coupe, had the unfortunate experience of travelling in one recently and realised that the roof drops at such an angle that you feel like you are being crushed. Saxo for £1,300 or new Puma on finance, the little French car might get the job! Thank you.
Great video, my first ever car was a blue 106 and i absolutely loved it. Also had the scariest moment of my life in a saxo, woke up upside down in a Cheshire ditch after my mate attempted to "drift" round a bend at 2am. Fortunately everyone ok!
My uncle had two of them, and then we got one as a family car, an 1.6 8-valve VTR. That interior immediately brought good memories back. Everybody wanted a VTS.
Matt, your videos are a refuge of sanity, from the most of the rest of you tube, and the madness of the current UK and wider world. Certainly entertain and keep me and thousands others sane. Thanks
Glad to see you appreciate these little cheap hatches. I've just picked up a bright green 1996 306 and I'm in the same stage of giving it a new lease of life
I had a red one, T-reg East Coast with a jazzy interior and yellow gear knob. Great fun to drive and very reliable during my ownership. Last I checked it passed an MOT in 2013 but from the advisories list was clearly rotting away underneath. Thought this one might go the same way, glad to see it has a new lease of life
They were fucking crap, I bought one brand new in 98, was rotten by 2000, holes in it. Citroen said it was because I washed it an it was industrial damage because I'm a engineer. They repaired it an it was rusting again in the same spot when I sold it 3 months later. Oh, an the bummed us by dropping the price of new ones about 3 months after I bought one.
As the proud owner of a 1997 Citroen ZX, also with the TU3 engine and can attest to the comfort of the seats. The high revving engine will probably be the throttle cable sticking. French cars of that era are pretty nice places to be in.
I've got a diesel ZX estate, beautiful car inside, very very comfortable, and far better than a Saxo in the fact that if you crash it you might actually stand a chance of surviving!
I still use one, registered in 2001. Except the faulty fuel gauge and leaking sunroof, nothing wrong with it and it pass mot without advisory every time. Love this little shi.... 🤣
This weekend I made a crazy decision. Scrolling Facebook marketplace and stumbled across a Citroen C3 Pluriel for £380. What could possibly go wrong. To my surprise after looking it over and driving it around a few days there is absolutely nothing wrong with it... Other than it being a C3 Pluriel. After buying a lot of cheap cars over the past few years it has been the only one so far that’s not a total lemon.

My grandad has a 2001 saxo diesel. Even though the power steering and air con failed recently, its generally been great. Torquey with the diesel and handles very nicely, but it gets very loud and it is a really small car. Love it though.
Fair play for keeping the little Citroen on the road. It’s getting a lot of love in the comments. I had an early Pug 106 as one of my first cars. I remember the simplicity and tiny pedal box with no place to put your clutch foot!!!
Just bought one too, and it‘s in prestine condition. Hope it‘ll last forever😉 60‘000 miles and no rust, bright blue. Looking forward to a few years of fun😌
Would love to see a good ol' Ford Puma on this channel :D Loved mine to bits. Got it totaled out 3x and fixed it up with scrapyard parts, before i finally got rid of it in favor of a new Fiesta ST.
Very surprised you didn't massively overspend on the saxo.😂 Great video it's a charming little car and worth saving. I love it when small runabouts are kept on the road.
Great outcome Matt and it's a credit to you. I always loved the idea of the Saxo and the 106 - with the right options they would be a wonderful thing today but alas!
I have 01 saxo and it's my perfect daily commuter, the maintenance its incredible cheap and i think it's going to be my daily for a long time 2 years ago i decided to put LPG on it and runs strong and healthy My saxo it's over 23 years old and dont even have any rust at all (in portugal we don't have as much rain as the uk)
I bought a VTR saxo with 45k miles on the clock ten years ago for £700 it was an absolute maniac to drive but I had fun with it. I kinda wish I still had it. It got replaced with a Puma, although more refined no where near as much fun to rag about in.
Love this, I had a Peugeot 106 for my first car and I absolutely loved it, it was incredibly reliable, ran on thin air and was a hoot to drive… hands down the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. I’m not surprised it passed its MOT easier than the Civic, it’s a simple car, and all the better for it.
They're still around in Portugal, not a very rare sight. The reason I came for this video is because I'm about to buy one converted to GPL because of the rising cost of gas, for my daily commute. I've driven one about 20 years ago at my old job, and I'm excited to (hopefuly) drive it again soon!
I was waiting for this one! This is my first car that i got to drive after getting my license and it made me fall in love with Citroëns as i passed the test on a Citroën too!😁
I hope it goes to someone who wants to preserve it. I love going to motor fairs and seeing those rare, sold in the millions and scrapped in the millions, everyday cars. Cars that have clearly been loved and cherished.
Yeah Matt I had a VTR as my 1st car it was good somewhat when it ran but yeah I did love it I sold it to a feller in Glasgow in 2004 and yeah all models had power steering as stranded
Nice one Matt, I'm looking forward to watching this. I've had a Peugeot 106 1.1 petrol in the past, it's sister, which was so fun to drive. I can only imagine how good the GTI was, no wonder their values are so high. To counterpoint your issues with reliability with Peugeots, it was bulletproof as I put 20k miles on it doing delivery work. Another fellow driver had a 508 which has almost 400k miles. He started out with it as a cabbie and kept up with the maintenance, which as you say is the key to keeping all cars going.
This was my grandpa’s car back in the day before he passed in 2007. So much memories with it, grandma insisted for me to learn to drive in it but it required a lot of mechanical work…we decided to scrap it the beginning of this year because my grandma was still paying taxes on it and she needed more space in the garage. Such fun little car! Thank you as always matt ;)
My mum had 2 of the things, both base spec red one's. A 1999 T reg X model, which she only got rid of because a plastic bag melted to the exhaust, and then a 2002 forte. Great cars.
Last of the proper small cars…. I had a late AX as my first car, pretty much a 1.0i Saxo but with even less crash protection. They’re great little cars to start in! I have an older AX now as a bit of a retro classic - every year I take it for an MOT, the lady there always says Citroen with an overly French twang just like you did, Matt 😂
My mum had a late-model AX, M272MND. A (very) special edition Spree with the 4-speed 954 unit. Its colour was that gorgeous metallic purple called Violine metallic (code KJSER). I had great fun learning to drive in that car in the late '90s. It was in fact nippier than a Mini Cooper and could do about 60 to the gallon. But yeah, the pedals were tiny.
@@owensteele1645 mine was a Spree too, P711 GVO and yes, they are faster than you’d think! Mine was one of the last so it had the 5 speed box: could keep up with a Saxo VTR (not an S though!!) Suspension so soft, no need to slow for speed humps 🤣
we had one of these years a go ,no frills cheap car ,missis never forgave me px it . she just said id swap that for me 06 fiesta ! great content mate thanks
You should be in goal for England... and another one saved. Tbh I was 9 minutes in thinking - a quick valet, new set of plates and hopefully the last owner will buy it back again 😂 . Would love to know the story on the Jaguar with all the issues as I'm sure a lot of others would. It's a double headed coin - shows the viewers the issues that can happen with used (and new) cars but also shows the viewers how they should expect a dealer to deal with the problem.
My father in law brought a gold Saxo with gold trims gold bits everywhere inside it, it was awful the gear knob used to fall off and the breaks were non existent did I mention he was in his 60s at the time, bless him he loved it until the mot condemned it. The memories of that & the mention of Gavin & Stacey & The Royal Family in one video has really made me laugh I loved this video. Glad the little saxo lived to see another day and you got a little bit of profit. Seems like little cars are what everyone wants currently so should sell quickly ❤
You bought this off my pal. Good times were spent in that car. Like driving to work in the rain and the wipers breaking so hanging out the window with cloths to wipe the screen down. Surprised he's not tried to buy it back off you. Everytime he's sold it broken he's bought it back fixed. Hope it has a good home
Just sold my 13th flip…! 2002 Peugeot 206 with just 60k on the clock, and was filthy. Cost me £300, £30 at the car wash & £25 on some new wheel trims and mats and sold it a day later for £900. Love little cars like these, especially the difference £50 can make on them.
Loved my 1.5 diesel Saxo, nippy, frugal and fun to drive, it was a R reg 1997 and when it got wrote of in 2013, it had only done 85,000 miles , reliable little car, loved it
Was going to say in the Honda vid that the jag looked like the one u had to do the chain on but forgot to ask as if the engine went bang another great vid matt👍
I had a saxo vtr as my first car. Back in the day i thought it was rapid. Eventually the head gasket went, as most of them did. Loved that car, like really loved it. Id definitely have another, just to remember the feeling of feeedom and joy it gave me.
Owned a VTR once upon a time and it was a fantastic little car, not the quickest thing about but handled brilliantly especially with the factory fitted Michelin pilots. Only needed apart from servicing was an engine sensor so was a very reliable car whilst I had it!
My partner has had her 106 now for 18 years! We look after it and I service it. Parts are hard to find for it now..trim, locks, switch gear etc. Not all of it though.
Reminds me of the Peugeot 106 version back in the early 2000s when I worked as a service advisor for Peugeot dealer. Borrowed a 106 1.5 diesel in diablo red when my car off the road, filled up the tank to drive to Scotland (270 miles) for holiday and return a week later, it averaged around 60/70 mpg on all motorway driving. The pedal box as you say was tiny every time I pressed accelerator down more than half way foot was jammed against the wheel arch carpet and the clutch pedal was so tight on other side!!But unlike small cars today the suspension was very compliant and soaked up poor road surfaces very well, and seats very comfy. The smaller cars made by Peugeot/Citroen were very popular at the time (their attempt at bigger and executive type models were a disaster). The interesting thing about your car is how interiors have changed, when they were colour keyed and brightened the small space inside, and on some makes you could even choose a couple of trim options .Now its black or black choices very gloomy and dark. Henry Ford would now say ---you can have any INTERIOR colour now so long as its black !
My girlfriend back in the day had a snot green Saxo that she absolutely drove the wheels off and thrashed for 5 years - Apart from standard servicing (of which there isn't much to do) it had a window switch, and that was it. If your not a car person they're great, so cheap to keep it makes you smile. Sold it to a kid who wrapped it 3 days later. And such was the life of many a Saxo...
Yup! Had a Saxo for my first car, then another, then a VTR, then a VTS 😅 big soft spot for these cars. Would love a drive in one again, purely for the nostalgia
Had a VTR and a VTS. They were quick. The vts would hit 70 in second gear. 120 bhp and about 900 kilos. Legendary. Definitely dont and wont make them like that anymore 😅 ah the memories...

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

I can confirm lol!
Major throwback
My very first car was a silver 53 plate 1.1 desire.
@user-nx7io1ns7pGO AWAY!!
Thank you.
I spend north of £60k on every car I own, but I absolutely love these automotive rescues!
Good on ya, Matt.
Thanks! Me too to be fair
Anything interesting in the collection
Ooo look at you
I spend North of a 10r everytime I go to greggs
Absolutely adored my VTS 😄 can still remember my immobiliser code from 18 years ago
My mother used to have one & it went for ages without many serious issues. They are an ideal first car for a 18 year old 👍
Great video, my first ever car was a blue 106 and i absolutely loved it.
Thanks
Glad you like them!
i have a lot of adoration for you keeping cars on the road irrespective of costs and selling good used cars much respect .keep it up
I try. Thanks 👍
its a lost art nowadays! i would buy a motor from you no qualms take care and keep up the good work
@@HighPeakAutos
Keep the classics coming 👍
OY, Matt, please block that religious plonker.
The Citroen garage in Birstall is just down the road from where I live! Small world! Great vid as always Matt 👍🏻
I love seeing 90s and early 2000s car still going obsessed with the niche of them
Love the cheapies being saved. Good work Matt. 🙂 I would have loved one of those as a first car.
Such an underrated car. They should bring it back with a modern version, would be a good seller today.
I still use one, registered in 2001. Except the faulty fuel gauge and leaking sunroof, nothing wrong with it and it pass mot without advisory every time. Love this little shi.... 🤣
Back in the day i used to work for citroen dealer and had a few as company cars, Loved them. They were quick and really comfortable.
You looked quite excited about the little car !

You have one too?
They were loads of these little Saxos around 10 years ago and are all gone, nice to see 1 of them saved 😊
Fair play for keeping the little Citroen on the road. It’s getting a lot of love in the comments. I had an early Pug 106 as one of my first cars. I remember the simplicity and tiny pedal box with no place to put your clutch foot!!!
Brilliant viewing, well done, another one saved! 👍
Very surprised you didn't massively overspend on the saxo.😂
Great video it's a charming little car and worth saving.
I love it when small runabouts are kept on the road.
Great outcome Matt and it's a credit to you. I always loved the idea of the Saxo and the 106 - with the right options they would be a wonderful thing today but alas!
They were rubbish and death trwpd
Another triumph Matt. Well done.
I have 01 saxo and it's my perfect daily commuter, the maintenance its incredible cheap and i think it's going to be my daily for a long time
2 years ago i decided to put LPG on it and runs strong and healthy
My saxo it's over 23 years old and dont even have any rust at all (in portugal we don't have as much rain as the uk)
Lucky with this one Matt! Woman liked these Saxo's being nippy in traffic and rare these day's. Glad it passed it's MOT.
I think you’ve done really well with that Saxo, another saved. 👌😁👍
I passed my test in a Citroen ZX, which with the AX were previous models to the Saxo. Those old Citroens had a good reliability record, as I recall.
One of the most fun cars I've driven was a Peugeot 106 1.1 liter. Basically the same chassis and car. Much fun! Worth saving.
I had one 12 year ago 1.4 with auto box and sunroof. Great wee motor. Oh yeah and it was my wife's first car.
Old cars always have fun designs and large windows
Nice one Matt, I'm looking forward to watching this.
I've had a Peugeot 106 1.1 petrol in the past, it's sister, which was so fun to drive. I can only imagine how good the GTI was, no wonder their values are so high.
To counterpoint your issues with reliability with Peugeots, it was bulletproof as I put 20k miles on it doing delivery work.
Another fellow driver had a 508 which has almost 400k miles. He started out with it as a cabbie and kept up with the maintenance, which as you say is the key to keeping all cars going.
The old French cars were pretty reliable, it all went down hill for the next gen onwards I think.
I love your honesty, no B.S . If you’ve overspent you admit it. ❤
I appreciate that
This was my grandpa’s car back in the day before he passed in 2007. So much memories with it, grandma insisted for me to learn to drive in it but it required a lot of mechanical work…we decided to scrap it the beginning of this year because my grandma was still paying taxes on it and she needed more space in the garage. Such fun little car! Thank you as always matt ;)
Your right - Green Citroen Saxo VTR Pre-facelift with the factory option of sunroof and headlight covers 👍😁
Cult following and a great little car
Thank you 🙏
Saved a great car
My mum had 2 of the things, both base spec red one's. A 1999 T reg X model, which she only got rid of because a plastic bag melted to the exhaust, and then a 2002 forte. Great cars.
My dad bought a saxo first new in 2001. It was hilarious fun! Me and my sister used to argue over who could borrow it!
the saxo and it's cousin the 106 are really fun little cars. Glad you've saved it !!!!!
Fab, a modern classic. Sorely tempted!
I had one 1.5d , drove it on veg oil in the fuel pandemic, video in my profile. Brilliant car.
My first car. Its predecessor the AX . It also had a sticky wide open throttle when out on a drive one day
we had one of these years a go ,no frills cheap car ,missis never forgave me px it . she just said id swap that for me 06 fiesta ! great content mate thanks
You should be in goal for England... and another one saved.
Tbh I was 9 minutes in thinking - a quick valet, new set of plates and hopefully the last owner will buy it back again 😂
.
Would love to know the story on the Jaguar with all the issues as I'm sure a lot of others would. It's a double headed coin - shows the viewers the issues that can happen with used (and new) cars but also shows the viewers how they should expect a dealer to deal with the problem.
Great memories of the Saxo, worked in a garage that raffled one off.
I had a saxo as my second and fourth car. Great little cars. They have lots of little issues but usually keep going.
Loved my 1.5 diesel Saxo, nippy, frugal and fun to drive, it was a R reg 1997 and when it got wrote of in 2013, it had only done 85,000 miles , reliable little car, loved it
Nippy 😳😂
Was going to say in the Honda vid that the jag looked like the one u had to do the chain on but forgot to ask as if the engine went bang another great vid matt👍
I owned a diesel T reg saxo 20 years ago. The engine was noisy but very economical and I never had any problems with it. It was a great little car.
In the scrap yard now i take it 😁
Was it a 1.9 d td or 2.0 hdi
@@thepurdychannel88661.5 Straight diesel
@@chucky2316Yes it’ll be long gone by now. It was 20 odd years ago when I had it.
@@thepurdychannel8866Was a 1.5 non turbo. Slow and noisy but no problems with it.
I had a saxo vtr as my first car. Back in the day i thought it was rapid. Eventually the head gasket went, as most of them did. Loved that car, like really loved it. Id definitely have another, just to remember the feeling of feeedom and joy it gave me.
I had a French car once. Wont make that mistake again.
Hey Matt. Love your work 👍
Had a VTR and VTS when I was a kid! I remember most of them had mental patterns on the seats and door cards. Wish I still had one now!
Owned a VTR once upon a time and it was a fantastic little car, not the quickest thing about but handled brilliantly especially with the factory fitted Michelin pilots. Only needed apart from servicing was an engine sensor so was a very reliable car whilst I had it!
Awww them were the days .... Saxo vtr and vts... Fond memories ❤️
That takes me back ,sold loads of saxo's,dead reliable and didn't rust, loved the video.
The opposite of scrap and get rid culture. Great video and good result.
Thanks
Great video as allways mate love them in black 👍👍👍
One of my first cars. Thanks for the memories
T reg. Red/pink. Utterly loved my saxo. Great first car
This brings back memories. I had a green mk1 1.1 Saxo. It had a keypad on the centre console to punch in a code for the immobiliser 😂.
you are amizing man i love this type
That hearse is actually for your bank account after the bill for that engine rebuild 💀
😂
I loved my Saxo. I can’t have any complaints, apart from wear and tear, it just kept running. Great to see this one live to see another day.
A Saxo was the 1st brand new car we ever bought. A little gem. Not a bad word to say
Fantastic cars in the snow
Nice one, Matt! 👍
23 years old. Will be a classic in 2 years! Amazing to believe.
Yup! Had a Saxo for my first car, then another, then a VTR, then a VTS 😅 big soft spot for these cars. Would love a drive in one again, purely for the nostalgia
Well done Matt for saving that cute little car. Someone will be enjoying that next week. I'd use it myself for running around locally.
love the hearse!
My first car A40. Austin Somerset!
Had a VTR and a VTS. They were quick. The vts would hit 70 in second gear. 120 bhp and about 900 kilos. Legendary. Definitely dont and wont make them like that anymore 😅 ah the memories...
shame they had pedals for females
@@longbar2344had a Peugeot 206 which was the same pedals way to close together
@lukejohn1277 ex had a 206 gt i think. one with big front bumper. horrid.
preferred the 306 gti6 but pedals still close
I had a 1.4 Furio as a loan car. Went like a scolded cat so the VTR/S must have a been a hoot.
I had a new VTS (R464 TDT) in 1997. It was ace & felt rapid for the time.
