  • Welcome to all adult viewers and journal crafters-- to my show & share.... Is limited space halting your attempts to coffee or tea stain/dye your papers? Or is oven drying taking up too much of your time? In this video I want to share my method that requires little space for lots of results, no mess, no stress and no oven drying. And how to use plastic lace to minimize the need for stenciling journal pages. Coffee and tea dying paper and fabrics was never easier.
    Please note: Due to all my projects and tutorials having been pre-recorded for over a couple of years now, many will not be uploaded in chronological order. However, I will endeavor to mention here in the description box the date when videos were first recorded for my archive of projects in the playlist to make sense.
    Date stamp of recording for this video was 14 May 2019.
    Happy coffee and tea dying with plastic lace in limited space

    I was watching Gayle Agostinelli today and she mentioned you for your paper dying. I was thrilled to find your "limited space" technique as I have been rolling this idea around in my head for months. Now with confirmation that the idea works beautifully!, I will buy some more coffee (I don't drink it either) and check my local Daiso for plastic doilies. Cross your fingers!

      How exciting to hear that you had the same idea Katty. We are on the same wavelength. It is wonderful to have something confirmed and someone else road test it. I am so happy your ideas are now achievable.

    It’s been years since you posted this most helpful video, this is my first time attempting to tea dye, you hints and instructions are great, just have to find out where to get plastic table cloth, I’m in Alberta, Canada. Plus thought with you being on your knees you did very well, plus no apologies nessary. Have a blessed day.

      Hi Carol. Wow, what a heart-warming and kind comment. It has made my day. Thank you so much. I am thrilled to hear you are giving tea dying a go. I hope you had a lot of fun. Also I have been meaning to record myself with a tutorial on how to find alternatives when plastic lace is unavailable. Reading your comment, I must try to get onto it. However, I do have a tutorial that was posted 4 years ago, on my channel, on some helpful alternatives that can be achieved with things in ones own home. Also stencils can also achieve a wonderful effect when plastic lace is scarce. Thanks again for watching and your kind support. Have a great day.

    Do you know that vinegar gives a wonderful aged effect on paper. Something about the chemicals in eac that when they are combined it turns out so pretty and using only a little of the non-smelling vinegar and see the difference. Vinegar alsp does metal as well. Just FYI from a scientist in California. Thank you for reading.

    • @medievalmirage
      @medievalmirage  5 років тому +10

      Hi Traci, so wonderful to have a scientist from California share such wonderful pearls of wisdom of science know how. Thank you so much. Really appreciate your expert input. Actually, when I first started out coffee staining many, many years ago. I played around with vinegar and lemon juice and you are right the results are different but so pretty. Thanks for reminding me, it has been so long, I had completely forgotten. Kind regards.

    • @susansharpe8781

    • @joannecarroll5504
      @joannecarroll5504 5 років тому +3

      As kids, we had a timber mill at the end of our street & it smelled strongly of vinegar. Apparently some freshly-milled woods, like oak, have high concentrations of acetic acid, which give off the 'vinegar' smell. I imagine the addition of vinegar to paper might reverse some of the bleaching process, carried out on the wood pulp, making the paper closer to its natural colour, perhaps?

    • @medievalmirage
      @medievalmirage  5 років тому +3

      @@susansharpe8781 Hi Susan, no, I am not using vinegar in this recipe and method for Part 1, 2 and 3 of the tutorials. I was explaining in my reply to Traci's comments, that I had used vinegar in the past, a long while ago for different effects. So there is no vinegar in the formula for this tutorial. Hope you have a lovely day.

    not sure where you live, loving the coffee dye, I am in the UK now, but I lived in Frankston, I used to go to the Dandenong Market, and they too sold this plastic cloth, not sure now, but assume still do, may be cheaper than spotlight, I wish we had Spotlight here, I so miss that place...love Sherry xxx

    Lovely to find your channel just now via this video being listed in my suggestions. Always special to find fellow Australians. Coincidentally we just returned to Brisbane from visiting our son in Melbourne and here I am stepping south again! Great suggestion to use underbed storage boxes. I’ve used them for children’s sensory play and can’t wait to try dyeing in one. Working with plastic lace as stencils and for staining is a fabulous idea, thankyou for sharing. Next shopping stop Spotlight! I have quite a few plastic lace placemats from Daiso and must go check the pattern varieties on them. Best wishes :)

    Well I’m off to Spotlight today!! I’ve used stencils before but the full coverage the lace gives will work really well on larger pieces of paper. My crafting space is limited so I’ll be giving your process a try. I enjoyed both your commentary and your enthusiasm for the end result. TFS 😃

Left on dining table overnight then ironed afterwards. I love your printed pictures Rachel was using in some of her 100 day projects.😊

    Hi! Your video showed up in my feed - I’m so glad! I have a similar process because I have limited space for laying out my tea dyed paper.
    I use my rebounder (a small personal indoor trampoline) layered with cardboard boxes, then old towels, then paper, rubber(?) shelf liner, and a plastic (vinyl?) lace table cloth.
    I also prop one part up a little height to get the liquid to flow and pool. I will definitely start mixing tea and coffee now. I had thought of that but not tried it yet.
    I sit on my office chair to dip my papers into a plastic basin so my back doesn’t break. Since the surface of the rebounder is only about six inches off the floor, there’s a LOT of bending involved! I like the idea of using a long plastic container that can be moved to any surface - process papers at a table, then move it to the floor.
    I place a small portable fan on a nearby bookcase and point it toward the stacks of paper. Then I periodically check them and remove the top layer when it’s dry. And I place my paper under books, like you do.
    And I’ll definitely try your method of “coffee stenciling.” Love it!
    I use a huge rectangular plastic/vinyl lace table cloth I bought for about US $14 through a mail order catalog, but I can’t remember the name right now. Will try to find it and link it for others.
    Love your layering technique - so random, great results! Tyfs!

    This is such a great idea. I usually use the oven but like you said, it is time consuming and terrible for my lower back after standing for so long. I also have to time my dying so it doesn't interfere with making meals, etc. I have been using books to flatten my papers and it does such a great job! I came over from Roxy Creations too! Excellent idea! I have a tiny, tiny flat so I'll be using this idea for sure. Just wish we had those sheets of plastic on the roll like they do in Australia. I used to live in Adelaide and had I known I was going to get into this I'd have gotten some of it. Here in the US it's not easy to find plastic doilies or tablecloths! Hello, I know your post was few years ago, but it might still be of interest? to you or someone else...Rolled plastic doily table covering can usually be found at JoAnn's or even Walmart. At JoAnn's or sewing shop look back where the decorator or utility rolls of vinyl are. Walmart usually sells vinyl table covering by the yard and is on a roller cart. Hope this helps! :)

    • @medievalmirage
      @medievalmirage  3 роки тому

      Absolutely. I was waiting till I got/purchased more plastic lace to cut up as you say. I use the larger lengths of plastic lace when I have loads of papers for those hot outside days, place them all in a row and throw the plastic lace over them with the brew and all done in one go.
