This is a full tutorial of how I coffee stain my paper with the lacey patterns!

My favorite thing to do is Art Journals. However, along this journey I recently discovered many items from work that went to the landfill that should not. It is our responsibility to do something with these items. So I will be journaling and upcycling here. I hope you join me and play along. Baking powder acts as a mordant to permeate and fix the dye as well as reducing acidity. Like vinegar when dying eggs.

That was excellent. I thank you. I make the job vastly more complicated than it obviously needs to be. I also do stencils on my papers. I have some beautiful birds, butterflies and flowers.

GREAT GOOGA-MOOGA, these papers are absolutely gorgeous! I am going to make a few as soon as I get the vinyl lace pieces. Actually, I have a few coffee-stained papers on my table right now drying, but I didn't do the lacey thing 'cause I don't have them -- yet, but you can best believe I will. I would have never thought this could be achieved in this manner, but seeing is believing. Thank you so much, Elaine. You have truly inspired me to get busy in yet another crafty way. I just got a pack of 6 vinyl placemats from EBay. I only needed one placemat, but now I can share some. i can't wait to try your method for coffee dying. It sounds so much easier than some methods I've seen on videos. Thank you!
I won't do it any other way. I have seen some people stack it up, that would scare me with mold. I hope you have a great time creating. And yep, share four of those but keep two for yourself. Have fun!
LOL just walk away, and dont look! Luv it! Beautiful designs! I normally do mine outside on a few long tables and have assembly style. But 18 sheets over night is awesome! Have a very creative week and Merry Christmas!
If my husband goes on a fishing trip I do it inside on my kitchen table and my countertops I get a whole lot more done. I sort of like doing it inside because I don't have to worry about a gust of wind or the dogs

Just make sure that your vinyl does not have a backing on it. It needs to be an open pattern

It's really not that hard, you just really need to pay attention that your coffee or tea goes into every nook and cranny. And Merry Christmas to you and your family!

So am I have purchased brand new. Once in awhile I get lucky and find them at a thrift store. But not very often. That's why when I buy a new one I share it.

Omgosh Elaine, these are so good! I wish I could find the plastic iones here in Jersey. I can't find any I only have one and it's because someone gifted it to me. I definitely would buy any you find. Also I would purchase some of your papers, so, pretty. Merry Christmas!
I have a few pieces of vinyl that I cut up from tablecloths if you were interested in them. You can let me know after Christmas and we will work something out. You just have to always be on the lookout. Many I have also purchased brand new. But I don't need a whole tablecloth and that's why I cut them up to share. It helps me and it helps others with costs. Merry Christmas

It is listed as plastic and sometimes it is listed as vinyl

Just be sure that if you order online that it does not have a backing on it. You want the lace designed to be open

Have you tried this with tea? I normally tea-dye my papers & I love the look. But I'm thinking I may have to hunt down a vinyl placemat somewhere ... hugs from Ireland.

Yes, plastic and vinyl. Fabric lace has never worked for me.

All vinyl. I think if they were some kind of fabric, the fabric would absorb the coffee or tea. And you want that to stay on the paper

I do not believe fabric would work because it would absorb. I have thought about trying to use stencils, I just haven't had the time to do that.
Really lovely patterns. This will seem like a stupid question, but what will you use them for. Is it for collage painting?
Sure, use them in collage. But most folks use them as pages in their junk/creative journals.

Do you wash the table cloth and placemats before using them again? You were saying the vinyl tablecloth gets sticky
I might wipe down the placemats from time to time. And I will put the tablecloth in the washing machine when I can't stand it anymore
I have no idea where to get the lacy plastic. I went to town yesterday and looked everywhere. Did you order any online? I just love this idea.
Yes, I have ordered online. However, you will get many placemats or too much in a tablecloth. So I sell the extra. I have been lucky to find at thrift stores from time to time and yard sales. I have some available right now, if you live close to me.

Where do you find the lace place mats that are vinyl like that
I have found some online in stores. I have found it at yard sales and thrift stores I have found some on eBay. Just make sure there is not a backing on it and that the weave is open
How do you mix your coffee? You mentioned baking soda??
@@MelissasMemoryJournals I just use the cheapest instant coffee I can find and I don't measure anything and sometimes I put in the baking soda and sometimes I don't
Have you tried tea to do this???? I'd like to try it minus coffee(can't stand smell of coffee)!
I used to use tea but I could never get it dark enough to my liking. Plus instant coffee was just so easy to use. But yes I believe he should work

Can this be done with real lace or must they be vinyl?

I have looked everywhere for plastic place matts. I can't find any!!! Yikes. LOL
You can buy brand new ones online. I have done that many times. If I don't want all of them I share them with friends. And that way I get some of my money back too. Just keep looking. If you lived close to me I would be glad to share.
Do you dye the paper before you do the lace dye?

Can you use cloth lace and get the same results?
I have tried and did not have any luck doing that.
Does it have to be instant coffee?
You could use tea or leftover brewed coffee. Instant is easy.
Do you use actual crocheted laces too?
I tried it once. It did not work out for me. So I just stick with the vinyl. I don't think the crochet material is flat enough.
