its easy to get 14 and higher, don't move your eyes, keep loking at the center (because your eyes will still highlight the white squares afterwards for like 1~2 sec), and do as quickly as possible, if you take too long you'll forget it.

If you read three big books to the three of them and then ask like 100 very specific questions to them about the book, Hikaru and Alireza will get many questions right, but Magnus might well get all the 100 right. He remembers every play of every game, and this is really important both for speed chess and classical chess. And besides chess, this test is also much more important for real life than the visual memory test they made.

Easy memory for easier patterns which are well known to your brain. Magnus will perform as same as other, and better ONLY if he's practiced such a test before more than others, as you can see Hikaru performed better because he already has more experience in these test than the other two. You have to remember, Magnus started playing chess from MUCH, MUCH younger age than any of the top GMs which shaped his mind from the start for such memory.

this is just a really specific test. yes short term vs long term memory is a huge factor, but it's also so different with each of the tests. for me, i'm 98 percentile for sequence memory and chimp test, 98.5 for number memory, 100 for verbal memory, but.. the best i can get for this specific "visual memory" test is 22 percentile lmao

Reminds me of the video during the Casablanca Chess event where Carlsen, Anand, and Nakamura tried to guess famous positions on a board, but with checkers rather than chess pieces; essentially testing their knowledge of famous structures.
