  • Man-Eaters are individual predators who specialize in and preferentially hunt humans. While many man-eaters in Kaimere are familiar to us, such as big cats and crocodiles, some are much different than predators we have today. Perhaps the most frightening are those demons who become increasingly powerful through the consumption of kaimerans and integrating their hereditary magic into themselves.
    Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

    Of all the Maneaters and Demons of Kaimere, I was NOT expecting a full on Lovecraftian horror! The Shoggoth was an incredible twist. The Fireback art was quite visceral as well!
    And of course, the First Children might have made homunculi as tributes to such beasts. At this point, I really wouldn't expect anything less than them. I really want there to be a deep dive into their society, and how they became so advanced.

    There's a city in the highlands of Ethiopia called Harar where the people actively feeding Spotted Hyenas by hand, offering scraps and leftovers from butcher shops to the predators. It's said that a massive outbreak, either an epidemic or famine, gripped the city and the hyenas almost went maneater after scavenging the dead. The locals believe that, like Kaimerans with a Zentaur, appeasing the appetites of these potential maneaters is the only defense they have. Thank heavens for Nasiri for forming his guild.

    I feel something overlooked with man-eaters is sometimes animals especially big cats become man-eaters because well... we're easy. If an animal can work up the nerve to hunt us we are very easy to catch and kill and animals are always looking for any caloric shortcuts they can take. The Man-Eaters of Tsavo were infamous for taking a person almost every night, sometimes multiple people a night and they were perfectly healthy individuals with no signs of disease or injury. They did it entirely due to ease and opportunity due to this seemingly unending buffet of railroad workers delivering themselves to the lions' territory.

      Thank you! The most successful magics are those that use animals as a host. Not altering or enhancing, just living as a parasite. Magics like this that make and control a body of external things are entirely dependent upon water and are generally pretty slow. Out in the open, they can't really defend themselves and are basically blobs of water and protein. They're tough, but can't survive stomach acid, so being eaten does eventually destroy them. In their element though, when they're larger than a person and able to set up an ambush, they can be very proficient predators, especially once they start accumulating Kaimeran magic

    Comprehensive as ever Mr Keenan! Your work never fails to amaze us, but your in-depth and critical ideas of such a subject as man eaters was thoroughly enlightening! I am especially fond of how most man eaters are often domestic-wild hybrids, perhaps nature’s greatest subversion, as counterfeiters quickly realise they have instead created their own demon (or they would if they were still alive from the man eating). A part of me cannot help but think the ru’kel’s curiosity and maneating, is a revived concept to the arboreal snatcher’s behaviour!
    At the same time Mr keenan, this video has inspired me to further think more. In my world, I too have domestic lions. (Said lions are owned and used by a junta coalition dictatorship and can be bought by important officials in the oligarchy) These domestic lions are used as a symbol of power, for what better way should there be, than for a human to control their predator?
    At the same time, the part where you talked about creating ‘demons’ reminded me of my own! It is called 'usurped form.
    For context, my world has a liquid known as ‘ground memory’ that can fuse or resurrect creatures.
    So if 2 vessels die next to or near each other, and the sophont one dies with conscious thought next to a still fresh carcass, it is possible for the carcass to be reanimated immediately with the sophont's consciousness.
    But there is an important rule known as
    'instinct over intent’. A creature that knows it will be killed (especially another sophont), and is resurrected will always fight with the usurper's mind for control. In this case, the original creature's instinct, be it to prowl or otherwise will override the usurper's mind or intent in using the body.
    This callous tactic is often used by humans who wish to ‘discard’ the weakness of the human form, for the power of another apex predator (oftentimes the target of such practices), or to be resurrected and fused with the predator!
    Thank you for reading Mr keenan, and feel free to tell me what you think!

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you! Indeed, hybrids of wild animals and domesticates seem extremely dangerous. A definite downside of Kaimerans domesticating such predators as lions. At least on Earth our only hybrids like that are wolfdogs. Still dangerous, but not on the level of a 300-400 pound cat elusive yet comfortable near human settlement.
      Makes sense that your culture would prize having tamed apex predators! A similar mentality to the Nerotans who finally domesticated their lions. Your usurped forms sound really neat! A cool premise to explore morality of the victorious consciousness.

    The fire birds seem to be missing from this video. I remember the head keeper in the managery from your first book saying that the indrokai was the one they feared escaping most.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Місяць тому +3

      Indeed, though the species very rarely goes man-eater. When they do, being a predator with near-human intelligence makes them especially dangerous. Highly dangerous, but not particularly common.

    On the subject of robust monarch skulls, is it mere chance that they resemble tyrannosaurus skulls?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  Місяць тому +3

      Not really mere chance. Megaraptorans and tyrannosauroids are likely sister clades (and megaraptorans may in fact end up being basal tyrannosauroids their placement is still debated). Being fairly close relatives, the chance that they would somewhat resemble each other as they independently got large is actually more likely than dramatic divergence. Yes, megaraptorans had long narrow snouts, but so did most early and all juvenile tyrants. I expect once we find Maip's skull, it will also be pretty robust.

      One last comment. On the topic of civilizations. I think it’s likely on the other side of the planet are human Bronze Age city states at most considering the current time frame. Beyond that, I think it’s inevitable that somebody finds away from earth in to kaimere. If I were guess when it would be post Oppenheimer, 70’s to 80’s, if not during the Cold War when both sides we’re looking for any advantage. Then maybe modern day ish between 2010 to 2030. Feel free to prove me wrong though, I just feel like with demons and vampires trying to keep kaimere hidden they would accidentally slip up badly during a high stress situation or incident.

    1. Given previous designs and previous hostility, is there any record of Crowfolk consuming people or bodies?
    3. Has Nasiri ever had to take on homunculi or is it strictly natural for him?
