  • Trilobites were a clade of arthropods in Earth's prehistory, being one of the major players taking off in the Cambrian explosion. They were hit hard by the first major extinctions, in large part due to their ties to coastal waters. Eventually the Great Dying saw their conclusion, though in Kaimere, despite several extinctions, they persist and are quite abundant in the known world and beyond.
    Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

    I always felt like Trilobites were done dirty on Earth due to a series of mass extinctions gradually weakening them. I’m glad this massive and successful dynasty of underrated gems gets a second chance on Kaimere and I’m glad they survived to the present.

    It’s wonderful to see the Trilobites survive in Kaimere compared to Earth. I’m certain that the people from Earth who are aware of Kaimere were amazed to know that Trilobites still exist in Kaimere, correct?

    • @TalesofKaimere

      Some are indeed quite surprised! Many in the Assembly assumed they were doomed. However, trilobites only got hit so hard on Earth due to extenuating circumstances surrounding a few major extinctions. As the overall context didn't play out the same way on Kaimere (start of the Permian Dynasty didn't have such aridity due to not having a Pangaea and therefore more shallow seas for them to reproduce, that sort of thing) so they managed to have enough species survive that they persisted.

      @@Stooltoad5017 I would suggest neocaridina shrimp, they are amazing. They require stable conditions but with the right research you can have a self sustaining colony. Biggest issue is people always overfeed them or work to hard to try and get water conditions perfect not realizing that stability is the #1 requirement.
      I am an aquarium nerd so honestly i could prolly talk about it forever. Its not a trilobite but there is something about bright coloured shrimp that is awesome.

    Glad to see trilobites are still doing well in Kaimere. They also look like they make for good eating. What do they taste like?
    I don’t think many animals can claim to have been around for 300 million years with a body plan relatively unchanged from when they started. Trilobites really were the peak.
    The Abyss of Kaimere sounds fun. I’d imagine whale falls are more common down their than they are on earth due to the productivity of Kaimere. I hope we will see what it looks like Down there someday. Has the assembly used submarines to check out what is down there? And if they did, did the Free States care?

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  9 місяців тому +19

      They are delicious, with taste and consistency similar to crustaceans like crab and lobster.
      They really did land perfection right away.
      I do hope to do an episode on the Abyss down the road. Since there aren't harvests of our Abyss, most of the fauna down there is made up of a few that came to the surface and a lot of coastal fauna that independently adapted to the depths. A much more unique habitat than most on Kaimere which have relatively close Earth analogues.
      The Assembly has had a few approved missions but they are not frequently permitted such activities.

    I remember learning about trilobites when I was a kid and learned how they were common in the Paleozoic living in the oceans feeding on the ocean floor and they resemble horseshoe crabs. But I like that they exist in Kaimere coexisting with Kaimerans and different Kaimeran wildlife but also being gigantic.

    On Objecia, trilobites, being survivors of the Whale's Rise Mass Extinction, have taken many forms. Some species even went onto land. One of the largest species of Objecian trilobite is the starship trilobite. This species is about the size of an average pillow, making it larger than most other Objecian trilobites. Starship trilobites are dark grey in color. It also is omnivorous and sometimes, it even eats fish. These trilobites are also the only Objecian trilobite that can swim.

      @@TalesofKaimere I'm actually quite surprised to see such a diversity of trilobites in Kaimere, especially those who've made the journey onto land. One very interesting thing with basically all Earth trilobites, on top of solely marine forms being represented in the fossil record, is that almost all groups have the same leg structure. Because their legs are made up of three parts and one of which is their gill, there is essentially no diversity in trilobite leg morphology, contrary to animals like crustaceans.
      What kinds of ecological factors do you think played into this sudden ability to expand to the land? I'd imagine even the occasional Earth trilobite could survive on land for a bit in humid enough conditions, and their fossils may just not be recorded for whatever reason due to the acidic soils of the tropics or something else. Is there a shared group of traits that allowed Kaimeran trilobites to successfully make the journey into freshwaters and land, such as association with magic (being such a prevalent group may have deemed them a beneficial investment in the eyes of the magic) or some other planetary condition?

    So seeing that there are reef-dwelling trilobites, I'm curious now if all reefs on Kaimere are primarily coral reefs, or if other varieties thrive. I saw a post that Nix Draws Stuff retweeted that covered several known extinct Earth biomes, such as carbonate reefs that were formed by giant rudists, which are bivalve mollusks, as well as ones formed by stromatoporoids, a once diverse group of sponges. There's also the possibility for reef-forming life with no direct parallels on Earth that came about due to the different context and evolutionary pressures present on Kaimere, like perhaps super specialized snails or barnacles?

    • @Stooltoad5017
      @Stooltoad5017 9 місяців тому

      I would think in the known world reefs would be relatively similar to how they are on current earth. I’d bet on the fringes of Kaimere (like Kaishel or the abyss) the reefs are made up of all sorts of wild stuff.

    • @TalesofKaimere
      @TalesofKaimere  9 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! In its natural state it communicated via radio or similar frequencies. The communication is theorized to have taken around 100 years. The data is sent via communication so takes the same amount of time. When the First Children trapped it, they dramatically accelerated the process. As it appears instantaneous, many theorize the two sides are linked via quantum entanglement or some similar phenomenon, but again, this is not the natural state of the portal.

    Yeah, Trilobites were really masters at surviving and adapting to almost everything ! They were extremes survivors !
    They appeared during the Early Cambrian, lived during the Ordovician, Silurian and Devonian and became extinct at the ne dof the Permian, for a lifespan of around 521to 251.9 in total (having lived during 270 mya as an order !).
    And having known a total of 5 time periods !
    They were very diverses, competitives and resilients !
    Thank to their overall generalist diet due to being detritivore and eating almost any kind of food available, their shells whatever basic or complex (their shells become more developped and spiky in response tot he appareance of fish taxa with actual jaws such Pladocderms or Modern Fishes), and were able to even survived in a very limited and low oxygen areas !
    They appeared at the start of the Cambrian, lived well with success during the cambrian and Ordovician, before facing a first decline during the Ordovician-Silurian Extinction (around 445 mya) due to mostly the decline of the oceans at the time, with around half of the Trilobites becoming extincts.
    They afterward grow again in diversity during the Silurian and Devonian, before facing another decline at the end of the Devonian during the Devonian-Carboniferous Extinction (around 359-58 mya), with only 4 families of Trilobites (the ones mentionned in this video, the Placopids, the Lichids, the Harpids and the Proetids) surviving into the Carboniferous.
    They lived during the Carboniferous and Permian, but never gaining again the level of succcess and diversity they had previousely at the precedents periods.
    Before finally dying out for all during the famous Great Dying which ended the Pemian (around 251 mya).
    Saying that they were not/low competitive animals and doomed to dissapeared anyway due to being primitive and archaic is not only a misconception and missinformation, but also a great insult tot his wonderfull and incredible clade that Trilobites were !
    As one of the longest living order of animals that Earth ever had so far ! (Dinosaurs are tame compared to this) !
    (Note : Most info here come from the episode of PBS EON channel about Trilobites, "The Trouble With Trilobites" from 2017.
    A very good and informative channel about prehistoric animals and cie !).
