I want to also mention that digital releases are great on platforms like GOG, where DRM isn't a thing and I can back up those install files to my own server and install games without any online launchers or accounts.

      I’m sure their investors wants.
It’s the Uber-model - offer convenience at a low price point and once you have consumers in a stranglehold you up prices to recoup the initial losses in the “nice guy”-face, and now the consumers have nowhere else to go because the competitors have been wiped out. It’s what Microsoft are doing with all their acquisitions, they don’t give a single shit about making great games, it’s all about market share %.
From a business perspective it’s the natural continuation of the move towards “games-as-service” Steam started.
The only way of stopping it is if consumers speak with their wallets, and as we all know by now, gamers certainly won’t. They’ll make any old excuse to themselves why this one hyped game is okay to pre-order etc. We all know it. People have been putting up with exceedingly expensive hardware that won’t even run games at a stable framerate because optimisation hardly is a thing anymore. People happily shell out $1000 for a GPU that will be obsolete in 12 months and won’t be able to run the newest games already on the market because they are utterly broken.
The games industry treats us all like fools because that is what we collectively are.

Everyone I play with on xbox has gamepass, so I wouldn't say its something no one wants.
It comes with gold so your essentially paying £4 a month for the games which for me more than pays for starfield and payday 3, yeah I don't get to keep those games but once I 100% starfield I probably won't play for a few years anyway, I also got a 3 month free crunchyroll subscription too which I'm enjoying.

There are a fuck ton of people that would rather have a collection of digital games than lug around a case with games they gotta swap around, especially when there’s a risk of the cartridge/disk breaking. It’s way more convenient and you don’t need Internet to play the games just to install them.

You don't own the 400 games, but you have access to them. Maybe I am crazy, but I rented most of the games I played anyway. Muta is the one who is disingenuous because he doesn't agree with the idea that some people don't care about physical media. This is why piracy will never go away. Whether you support it or not, people will still do it. Except now, it's going to include people that would pay for it, but will NOT purchase the game if they can't own their copy in perpetuity. The companies are biting themselves in the ass long term.

      Exactly.
I've argued this in Nintendo forums with fans, who are understandbly upset with pirated Nintendo games.
Nintendo are notoriously anti-emulation, but if they were not so anti-consumer i.e. shutting down stores, lack luster virtual console and not giving Nintendo fans what they want, emulation may not have grown to be as popular as it is today.
Pirates are going to pirate no matter what, but corporate greed makes pirates of once legitimate consumers.
I was a huge Apple fan back in the day and purchase hundreds of movies and tv shows via iTunes amassing a 1000+ iTunes media library.
Until I began to realize the constrictive nature of Apple's proprietary format .m4V and iTunes gatekeeping i.e. had to log in and authenticate into iTunes to watch my videos, can only really use iTunes etc..
A sunken cost fallacy is a trap, however I managed to replace all my iTunes media via physical discs and ripped them to my storage devices into .MKV formats.
The process took a couple years and of course expensive to duplicate my entire library, BUT it allowed me to actually own my content that I bought as well as more freedom to play it on any device and software without being restricted to iTunes.
This is the same with games.
I was all in into Steam, then I migrated to GoG and looking for ways to duplicate my once Steam library into DRM-free alternatives.

Long-term? What long-term? Most of the companies had shifted to making as much money as possible, as quick as possible, breaking laws and disregarding everything in their way. Like parasites, sucking shares values from one company and moving to other.
And the best thing is - they get caught, then they're sorry. And yet there are still people who defend them. And the cycle continues.

No, they're taking a hit now to make it a permanent in the future. Like unity, they know they're screwing certain people but if they get the cash rolling in from the big fish then they don't care. Every publisher knows now are lean times, so now's the best time to push something like this so it becomes ubiquitous tomorrow. If they can weather the storm and not pull a unity they'll have a stronger position and then because that's the new normal, we pay or we don't play. It's not about doing what's right anymore, it's about not being the one on the bottom and then needing to pull a unity to keep being profitable.

Oh no, they will absolutely kill piracy in the future. Piracy will be dead once streaming for video games becomes good and a feasible thing. You won't be able to download any games.
You'll be forced to stream games, which will ensure no one gets access to the game files. Then they will charge hourly for games, and if they decide to stop providing service to a game, it will disappear forever. This is the wonderful future that awaits us, thanks Microsoft.

Gamepass is being offered at a loss to encourage people to get used to paying for games through subscription. As we've seen with streaming services, they don't intend to offer the same breadth of content for low prices forever. They'll gradually reduce the available games and ramp up the price, and probably introduce tiers with some content behind additional paywalls. It's actually really manipulative and sinister.

    • @elhazthorn918
      @elhazthorn918 Рік тому +29

It is. I really don't understand the folks who look at a 'small' subscription fee, and think it's a great deal, when they want you to pay that 'small' fee in perpetuity forever. It's just so myopic.
"$5 a month! Forever? And I own nothing? Wow! What a deal!"
It's no different to a friend who charges you to play on his Xbox for $5 a month.
Now, not to say people don't benefit from Gamepass, it's great if you just wanna try a bunch of stuff, and don't like replaying games you've completed. But I want to own it. I want to be in control of when I get to play it and not be pressured to use the subscription. I like watching the same shows over and over.

To constantly pay for the subscription to play a few games is insane for me, specially when the price is 15 dollars for ultimate, which some games like Skate 3, fusion frenzy etc requires.
The sad part is these same games are not possible to buy on pc and you would need to pirate, which im too lazy to do..

People will just private music before they pay $20 a month for them.
And if the offering on game pass is too limited, they just won’t buy game pass.
The only way you’d continue pay a bunch of money for services like this is if the entire market were captured. But it isn’t and never will be because it’s so profitable to just sell games. Like Activision was never gonna out call of duty on gamepass and the only reason they are now is because they were bought by Microsoft. Most other publishers will not follow this direction

I like my physical collection too, but let's go over the facts. Steam was ahead of the curve. Modern PCs do not lack disk drives because of Steam, they lack disk drives because put plainly they are slower in every dimension.
You never needed disks for gaming. And they have a shorter shelf life than your Steam account. They were just the cheapest way at the time. Keep them around for your consoles, otherwise back your games up on as many drives as you can and crack them if you are really worried about your consumer rights.
Yes, it would be nice to have at least the option of a physical copy, but now you don't have to worry about that shit getting scratched up. If you were around back then, you remember the disk protector bullshit that was a huge waste of time and money. You remember the toothpaste and the coke and the praying your game would turn on and work. I would take the quality of games back then over what we have now - modern gaming is complete trash - but dicking around with all that is shit we don't need to go back to. I was ambitious in the tech industry (post service) and us "geeks" were all concerned of how they could damage gaming. Only a few were hyped about Xbox (though they skewed that with aggressive marketing). OG Xbox was relatively decent, but compared to the competition it wasnt close and still had a huge hill to climb. I appreciate physical copies, and they should always remain available, but there is always a bigger picture to look at here. Physical copies are great at preserving earlier builds of games, but with how many changes patches introduce these days, playing right off the disc with no updates is becoming less and less practical (note that I didn't say you can't do it).

This has been an eye opening experience, I honestly didn't know how badly Microsoft has treated Physical Media, let alone preservation. They really shouldn't have ended that Backwards Compatibility program they were doing before, cause now everyone else I feel is taking advantage of their back catalog and rereleasing stuff up the butt, like just the other day the OG Tomb Raider trilogy got a rerelease announcement with gameplay to boot, which is a good start as any, as long as we all can push back over this anti preservation garbage enough, then companies will follow suit, especially more recently with that sinking feeling of the cons of an all digital future started to arrive, delistings, streaming service content jumping ship to another service you name it, it's likely we might be hitting a point where they'll be some laws put in place so us users and the companies that make this content to work under certain guidelines to not be as anti preservation and most importantly anti consumer, cause things like this are becoming more and more common with companies, with pushback and criticism following it like with Microsoft here, there will be changes coming, big ones.

During the tail end of the PS3/360 life cycle I switched pretty much completely over to digital. It saved me space, and more and more often it saved me money because I could buy a lot more games on sale than would normally be seen with physical disc copies. When I have friends who asked why I switched or told me they still used discs I scoffed at them and called them dumb since you still had to install a bunch of data on it anyway. While I do still find that to be true for a lot of games that rely heavily on online modes if you are going to be playing online a majority of your time I think it's a valid criticism. When it comes to more single player focused games where a fresh install is basically all you need to enjoy the full game plus or minus a few bugs here or there that could be alleviated by a newer update I will fully stand by physical media. It's incredibly important and as the previous generations of consoles physical media is slowly being bought up more and more and the prices for those discs, cases, what have you climb year after year it has become undeniable for someone who's digital library on the PS4/5 has almost reached about 500 games that on more than a few purchases, I wish I had the physical copy.
I won't always have internet. PlayStation won't always be around, or allow us to play older games on the PS6-7-8s etc. Game Pass won't have all the same games this month as it will the next and the gaming companies know this and continue to throttle us, deceive us and try to manipulate us into thinking that physical media is a thing of the past because that means that we as consumers own what we purchased and they can't on a whim rip it away. There will be a period in all of our lives going forward when we can't play the digital games or at least purchase the ones on the stores because like the PS3/360 generations those storefronts are closing orphaning many games that those companies aren't likely to port onto newer consoles deriding emulation the whole way. We wouldn't have to emulate if they would just do a better job at game preservation. I'd happily pay over and over again for my favorite childhood games on newer hardware because I am a sucker. That may just be me but at least we would have them available.
Remember when the big studios said that digital media would likely stay about 10 dollars cheaper since they don't have to pay for discs to be printed? That didn't last very long. Why am I paying the same price and not even getting something I can proudly display on a shelf that I don't have room for? Remember when we had demo discs? We wouldn't have had to worry about Konami taking P.T. from us if we still had those around.

If you want to blame somebody, blame Valve. Steam was the platform that first popularised the idea of locking your purchased game to your account meaning you can't resell them.

But if you have a 1.0 version of a game and no internet connection, you're gonna struggle to get the game working. The 1.0 version might not even work without a patch so you have no chance.
And things have only gotten worse since as other companies took their blueprint to extreme lengths. Always on connection, microtransactions, lootboxes... the list goes on and on. Microsoft even forces you to pay a fee to play online. Unbelievable.
The massive file sizes of games is also a big problem. If you don't have fast internet it's gonna take you forever to download a game. If you don't have unlimited data then you're gonna hit your data cap...

Thank you for the video, this is basically my point on digital vs physical. Digital can be convenient when the situation is perfect for it, aka i can just go to steam, type the name of the game in the search bar, install it and play it. But there are also times when my power goes out and all of a sudden i no longer have access to these games, sure the locally installed ones i can play but i don't have all 1000+ games installed on my hard drive so the fact that i can just go to my shelf and grab a physical disk off it is very much needed at times. Also fun fact, game platforms can and will permanently ban and delete your entire account if they deem is necessary to ban you, for any reason because its their platform. All those hundreds to thousands you paid on those digital games, gone. Only thing stopping you from playing a physical game is your console dying, your disk disintegrating after a few decades, or a house fire. 🙄
There are also the games that were just removed from their respective devs due to licensing issues. Mistover is a good example of this, the game is now gone everywhere, you can't buy it. But i own a copy of it so i can play it whenever i want. Not to meantion the digital only consoles becoming glorified bricks after their stores close down.
All in all and the TLDR is: Even if you don't like physical, its something that should exist, otherwise game preservation can go from scrounging a collection for a few thousand dollars, to the game never being available to play legally because nintendo, sony, or microsoft randomly decides that they don't want to pay for server space.

Fully agree with you, and the same has happened bad with movies/shows lately too. People are getting sick of having things removed and censored on shows put on streaming. People are, slowly, understanding even at my workplace why physical is needed - so companies can't edit out history they don't like.
Know whats happened with that? More people say ARRGH MATEY and drop sub services.
I've been buying a lot of shows/movies lately due to this and backing them up myself. So I KNOW I'll have it, unmolested and the best quality possible.
    Same with games.
When physical isn't an option NOR a digital copy (ala Steam or GOG) that allows you to download offline installers and pick what patch(s).. sales will tank and they will shift back. Digital, rental only won't last long at all. It only somewhat 'works' now cause people have the easy option for the most part, of getting a disc.. when that option is gone? Shit will hit the fan in some way. Whether thats people hacking/distributing or something else.

Sadly so many people are willing to just go digital based on supposed conveinence of not having to get off their ass to change discs, but suffer the inconvenience of higher prices with no resale once you've finished the game or if it's a bad game.
Now that both consoles are looking to come out without disc drives but make them an add-on is a crime, it'll mean publishers will request less discs to be printed or not do physical copies whatsoever. A lot of people will wait for sales if there is no physical copy, as handing over 60-70 pounds/dollars for a digital code for a game is not the same as having a tangible asset in your hand.

I always enjoyed the thrill of going down to my local video games store and using my hard-earned cash to buy games physically.
As time went on however, I slowly switched to digital, not that I wanted to, it was due to the fact that:
    1. My gaming laptop doesn’t have a rom drive
    2. I found it difficult to purchase DLC for games I already have because of the fact I couldn’t buy it physically, hence the switch to steam
    3. Some games I wanted, I couldn’t get physically (e.g. undertale, Trainz railroad simulator 2019, etc.) because of the lack of availability.

What's just as bad is that some games that can be played offline actually require the day 1 patch and won't launch without it.
We also have games like Halo which makes it pointless buying a physical copy such as MW2. That game had basically no data on the disc and you still needed to download around 70GB when it launched, so there were people like myself who were forced to buy it digitally instead. MW3 will likely be the same and any future games in the franchise too.
The one other thing I don't like is when we have a game that can literally be played solo the whole way through, like Outriders for example, but requires you to be connected to a server for whatever reason.

While physical movies and music, DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs and vinyl records are still around. Now, I'm not sure what percentage of movies and music albums are released physically, but I'm fairly sure it's most of them except for smaller productions. It looks like games are approaching an all-digital market much faster now that the ball is rolling compared to the other entertainment industries.

I also think you should be able to have physical copies of your installed games and be allowed to store them away on external drives. I can give you a bit more context about why some games are not fully on disks. The reason is simple the disks need to be produced months ahead of the actual release of the game so they can be printed and shiped to the stores. This is a timeframe of like 5 months where the developers can not work on the game. Now the companies could send those developers to work on the next games but if after the actual release problems arise then they need these developers back but they worked for a long time not on these project and would have a really hard time to fix stuff. So what companies nowadays do is to use these 5 months to buxfix and polish the game internaly. That is why you see these 40GB day one patches

Game preservation doesn't have to be physical discs neither. Besides emulation like you mentioned, my PCs external drive is stacked with games. Both are potential routes digital going can take if they're willing.
