Increasingly common Muta L. Dude is blinded by his hatred for Microsoft and not nearly as “passionate” as he claims to be if he honestly thinks Nintendo or Sony aren’t planning the same thing.
When (and I do mean WHEN) the next consoles from Sony/Nintendo are all digital and have no disc drives, no means to play physical media, will Muta say anything? Will he be consistent and criticize them? Will he acknowledge that the average consumer choosing digital over physical media is the main driver in this?

Is your memory so bad that you can't remember the times I've called out Nintendo for allowing physical copies to rely on downloads, I've said this in a video literally 48 hours ago, I was also one of the people to criticize Sony for the whole C-Bomb issue where physical media was rejected by the PS4 OS. Sony soon updated the firmware to circumvent this issue.
If you're gonna make claims of my alleged "fanboyism" then you need to actually backup what you say with facts.

As a biologist I'm very well aware of the importance of sustainability, landfill issues, climate change and environmental destruction, and you're absolutely right when you say the issue is being used as a trojan horse. These companies DO NOT CARE about plastic packaging or blu ray discs going to landfill.... at all. What they do care about is the increased profits that comes from an all digital product. No physical product manufacturing and no physical transport. Plus, they get to enforce heavy handed DRM and can life-limit games by killing servers, forcing customers to buy newer games. It's all about profit. Its even questionable whether all digital is truly better for the environment, since servers use an enormous amount of energy and water (for cooling). Sufficed to say, don't buy into that corporate spin. The best way to help the environment is to hang onto products for as long as possible and re use.

The Xbox brand has never fully recovered from its self-inflicted gunshot wound back in 2013. Sony's 'How To Share Games on PS4' video was a terrible blow that made Xbox look like a bunch of idiots. Their own statement about "we have a product for people that don't have internet access...the XB360" was tone deaf and really made them look arrogant too. This is how I would like things to be if companies wanted to go all digital:
The console itself does not have a disc drive out of the box. If you want one, it’s a separate attachment. Then if someone wants a disc, they can go online to the publisher/developer’s website and get a disc copy of the game made to order (so no discs are sitting in a warehouse somewhere) and all the buyer would need to pay is shipping and the cost to print the disc.
I think this would be a good compromise. The people that want discs can still have a way to get it and the people who are okay with all digital can just get the consoles off the shelf and download everything.

It's not just Microsoft. It's reddit removing 3rd party APIs, Twitter trying to paywall their entire platform, the EU trying to backdoor encryption, the metaverse, Paypal censoring "misinformation", and countless other controversies that I could go on and on about.
If you're stuck in the west like I am, realize that your leaders, the government and the fortune 500 actively hate you and want to control your life by forceful measures, you're not in a free country anymore. One major problem is that Xbox caters to the loudest audience, and it's the audience that just wants new things and throws away the old one when something newer comes out, the people like me and Muta who like to constantly go back to my favourite games don't get any service that gives them a reason to be a customer for Microsoft.
Honestly DRM and refusing to archive games is a problem with many companies. Think about The Sims 4 and the DLC pitfire they have, whereas I prefer to play The Sims 2 since I still have it on Origin. The second Origin denies me the right to download and play it whenever I want, I'm pirating the game. I'm done with DRM bullshit which is why a lot of games I play at the moment are on Emulators.

As annoyingly stubborn Nintendo can be at times, this is one of those scenarios where Nintendo always being "behind" the times is something I appreciate. Nintendo never fell into the trends of the past, the First person shooter craze, the MMO phase, the Lootbox/Microtransaction phase, the "live services" phase, and now the push for digital only. If nothing else I can chill out on my Switch and avoid the bollucks of the industry for the most part.

@lalas3590 Pokémons issue can be connected completely to the necessity to have a game out by a certain date because Pokémon is a media empire and delaying the game would mean having to delay, the anime, the TCG, and the countless merchandise accompanying it. And regardless, it is GameFreak that needs to be held responsible, not Nintendo. That's like blaming Microsoft for all of StarFields issues. GameFreak makes the games, Nintendo is simply the publisher. Also it's only S/V that have had egregious bugs anyways. Legends was great, Sword/Shield were alright, and Let's Go/Gen 4 remakes issues weren't graphics or performance.
And to say Nintendo doesn't care outside Mario/Zelda is flatly wrong. Pikmin, Splatoon, Metroid, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, all fantastic, zero issues across the board.

If you are missing one disc or it’s scratched pretty badly, you can’t play the game. @@Mordecrabs Convenience isn't the only consideration to make. What about games that have a digital shelf-life of 2-3 years in the case of the Forza games because of their licensing expirations? They're not the only examples, but they're the best ones because their license does expire within that short time span. That's hardly enough time for a digital sale or two to knock down the price below $40. How convenient is it to pay $60-70 for a game that will pretty much be dead in 2-3 years? Even worse, if access to a game you buy is revoked entirely, you have no rights to a refund. Apple already proved that these businesses can take your money without any obligation to offer a service in return. They delisted several movies and songs people payed for through their storefront, and when they tried to sue for refunds or exchange of content, their EULA gave Apple legal immunity because it was an "accepted risk" of purchasing a license for digital access on their storefront. These gaming companies run on the same business model with the same legal protections written into their EULA's. You might as well just give strangers on the internet your credit card information if you don't mind giving away your money for nothing in return. How's that for convenience?

I want to comment on the "digital prices are the same as physical". You know, sometimes like with PS4, purchasing games digitally can even be more expensive that disks. But there's a good reason for that, if digital purchases were cheaper from the very beginning, game disks would have died already in the Xbox 360 generation. That's because not everyone is so passionate about getting a physical copy (+ shelf real estate is limited), if they can get it cheaper and faster in digital form, I would say most people would jump in. If anything, that pricing strategy is what have helped discs to survive this long.

I'm in a niche case, where I wanted to try out different consoles. Been playing on PS since PS2 (before that it was like Lego Rock Raiders on the PC lol). But yea, I wanted to try out different console, but not pay full price. So I found the Series S, second hand in almost perfect condition for 180 euros (brand new 300) and later bought a Switch secondhand as well. And on both with just digital games. Game Pass on the Xbox is really convenient for me in this case.

I have bought some physical games from stores that were clearanced or on sale over the years. It isn't a huge collection but i got a good amount of them for the Xbox Series and PS5 if I get either one someday. Given what Microsoft has been pushing with these leaks, and the possibility that Sony is pushing the same thing, I don't know if I'll end up getting these consoles after all. Which means getting those physical games will be all for nothing and leaving me with more resentment to these companies. I have little faith they are wanting to keep the disc consoles in circulation for much longer if this is where they are going.
It is sad many consumers think it's ok to actually lose an option on how to buy a product. So many people saying, "Get with the times" when they don't really understand what that really means for the future. And that's what I hate: Modern Days of Gaming. Consumers are so stupid, they will accept any garbage that is thrown at them even if it's bad. Like Asmongold said, people will keep making excuses saying, "Oh it's not THAT bad. There's some good things about it." This is why AAA games are unfinished at release, riddled with microtransactions, locked down with DRM, jacked up in price, and try to be a service rather than a product because of "Getting with the times."
I'm afraid these days I've been thinking the same thing with the video game industry. I'm going to duck out of modern gaming if this doesn't get better. If there are any games I'm interested, they're going to be indie games and available on GOG or Steam just to support them. I know Steam isn't perfect either, someone will try to make my whole argument invalid because of one thing, but consumers gonna consume . Otherwise, I have a ton of untouched games I've collected over the years, bought and some found on the seven seas, that I won't care what happens to the games industry. More and more people are starting to feel that way and eventually we won't be around to put out the flames the industry keeps creating, and maybe that's for the best.

It's not exactly the same since you still need steam yo run those games, I just mean there is nothing technical stopping having a large storage medium that ypu can install your games to and then run from like you would with a disc, which could preserve ownership and make do less crap ends up in a landfill. The reason not to is probably because they want you to rely on their service, like Muta mentions in the video, rather than being not possible from a technology point of view.

Ngl these two videos on Xbox have been kinda a miss for me. I dont even play on console at all anymore. The reality is digital IS where the market is heading and that is the future. Tbh I REALLY dont care if a game "requires internet" nowadays. Sure, I think we should advocate to have legal ownership for our games. But even currently as a PC gamer: Ive bought EVERY game digitally and not ONCE had a genuine issue with me "not owning a game". In reality I can play any game I own still when I want. Not once has that been attempted to be taken away from me and even if in some extreme scenario that DID happen, the beauty of PC is you have easy access to emulators and... how should I say this: Buried Treasure.
So at the end of the day: YES, you CAN go back and play those games even if you dont own them physically, to say otherwise is just disingenuous imo. If you seriously will "quit gaming" over the loss of physical media, with all due respect that is the most boomer thing ive ever heard. These games WILL be preserved one way or another through emulation or otherwise, do you seriously care about owning the plastic box with a disc in it OVER simply playing games?
This may be a hot take as well but: Regardless of the legal technicalities of it, I pretty much consider accessibility to a game equal to ownership, (unless youre paying for a timed subscription like game pass) as yet again, ive had no reason to suggest otherwise. Its fine to prefer physical media, I respect it as the 360 is where I started in gaming. But digital for the most part is simply just superior especially in terms of convenience. Overall I get the point youre trying to make but I dont think its as big of a deal as you make it out to be right now. These videos are kinda an L overall imo and an overreaction. Pretty much the entire industry "locks you to their storefront", Xbox, Playstation, Steam, Nintendo etc. So yes: On a very technical level I dont "own" any of my games, but I can still play every single one when and where I want so therefore: Yes I am still happy.

I'd say get a disc, new if you can and that can at last up to at least 20 years, maybe even longer. But that's me just me...@@quantumforce4791

What would be insane and kinda cool to me, if they have an expansion bay to insert an aftermarket disc drive.

Sure we are sacrificing ownership in a sense, but the convenience of not having hundreds of discs and the natural wear they will get over time, is something i think a majority of players are willing to give up on. It isnt a perfect world and we have yo sacrifice things in life. Does it suck, yes. But digital is the future we are heading. Like i cant imagine owning a physical copy of all the games ive played on steam. Yes played. Over 400 out of the 1500 library i have. Its just not possible. And alot of people just dont have the space.

Which means you could sell the games you no longer wish to play and get some money back.
