Emulation is 90% of the reason retro games are still relevant. And I still own every system I've ever bought. I love the archive aspect of it. It's important. Especially as we crawl bloodily ever closer to digital and stream only, it'll be easier and easier for companies to stop you from actually owning what you buy.
@@Atamosk-bu7zt one day. Hell stream exclusive games don't seem that far fetched. Stadia tried to dedicate itself as a system to it. I could see Microsoft following that path with blind malice.
@@mjc0961 it'll be there eventually. It's only a matter of time. The question is will we achieve lag free streaming of games or faster than light travel first.
Do you not understand the sheer amount of data it takes to stream a game 24/7. There's a reason stadia failed. The fact it was older games and the fact they were stream only. It's an unrealistic concept.
I think the emuparadise takedown is genuinely one of the biggest tragedies in the gaming community, it really is scary that big companies are gonna be fighting old rom distribution sites
@@lmanman5756 that wasn't really my point, sure you can still download roms, but if big companies start actively trying to fight roms, things might not be so good in the future

@@RyuSaarva Support games that are 20+ years old that Nintendo wouldn't make any money out of it anyways because the only way to currently buy a lot of these games is from 3rd party sellers or digitally from Nintendo but then that'll turn out like the Wii with the shop getting shut down and people losing the games they bought on them forever unless they emulate or pay an absurd amount of money for physical copies and old systems on Ebay or Amazon.
after doing a google search I found out that the only thing you lose is the ability to redownload content which you have thrown in the trash so what you are saying is not true at all.
"Emulation is bad because it hurts the value of my game collection, but instead of saying that I am going to argue you are hurting devs or emulation sucks" - Elitist Retro Gamers
They'd also be the one's who would be okay with buying Super Mario World on the Wii online shop (Which is dead)... Then getting a Wii U and not being able to play Super Mario World so they buy it from the Wii U online shop (Which is also dead)... Then getting a Switch and not being able to play Super Mario World so they download it from the Switch online shop (Which will also be dead in the future). Do you see the pattern here? There needs to be an online service like Steam that can preserve these games. People who bought Half-Life 2 on Steam can still play it on any modern computer through Steam 15 years later, meanwhile console store servers shut down, discs can rot or crack, and cartridges can wear down, corrode, and the chips can just stop functioning after years of use. Super Mario Bros. cartridges are aging around 35 years now... They won't last another 35
I love the old classics..but the elitists are what outsiders think gamers are. Im not really an emulator type person..but no one should be ridiculed for doing so. It doesn't make you some kind of alpha because you don't emulate old games. Then the other problem is that they're wearing such thick nostalgia glasses that they really think there weren't as many bad/poorly made games back in the day.
I like emulation a lot. The feeling of playing pokemon emerald on my phone or playing a good mario game on the same system I can play Two Point Hospital and Cities: Skylines on is great.
Horseman Secretariat I feel like there has always been bad games but back then a lot of the bad games were not common from the best 1st and 3rd party publishers. Sometimes they released crap but it was rare and wasn’t consistent. A lot were movie based games and games that were just shovel ware. The main problem today is that a handful or more of mainstream publishers release unfinished/untested/rushed games along with micro transactions.
Man even when this guy gets "heated" he comes off as a nice dude. I dunno if it's the inflections or something but like. I feel like I just listened to a friend rant about something.
@@BitchChill Why thank you, I guess when it comes to a *face-off* against other ladies I come out on top. I just hope it's not obvious I've had some work done. :p
I also hate the mentality of "retro game good, modern game bad." I get that the modern gaming industry is pretty corrupt, but there are so many good modern games that I'd much rather play than any retro game. Don't get me wrong, I still like retro games but I don't think they're the cream of the crop that so many people make them out to be.
This feels like the drip down effect of the rich people game of collecting expensive and actually rare things for bragging rights. I have no problem with collecting anything old for archiving purposes, but value of these things is sometimes very skewed. Software, i.e. ones and zeros aren't the same as physical objects, and here seems to be the gist of the argument.
Me too I have a Nintendo 64 emulator, a NES emulator, a SNES emulator, a Nintendo GameCube emulator, a Sega Dreamcast emulator, a Nintendo DS emulator, a PSP emulator, a Ps1 emulator, a ps2, emulator and a ps3 emulator I have no games on my ps3 emulator yet though.
I love how some "elitist" collectors get upset with me as a collector as I only get games I "like" and want to play, and not "that one game that is super expensive". I collect games because I like playing them but some seem to think the only thing that matters is when ya have the most expensive games ever.. well you know what... have fun with your sealed copy of Stadium Events, I however will enjoy playing my Mega Man 2 on NES (ok snes classic these days cause well.. easier to hook up to a modern tv).
It's like having a holographic charizard but you don't like charizard. Like sure it's rare but why bother if you don't even like charizard? Just to show off?
Same shit exists with TTRPG. You know them by the massive bookcases jam packed with all the 2e splat books and every adventure printed since Gray and Dave were still friends.
Except Nintendo shuts down sites that used to give abandonwares and obscure games that can't be found otherwise, and they won't sell them back to us because they won't make as much money as A Link To The Past or Earthbound.
Real talk though Make the Switch backward compatible, like completely backward compatible, not just those Famicom/NES stuff Put ALLLLLLLLLLLLL of those roms that we can still find on rom sites on the eshop store, and price it accordingly, unlike those Nintendo Virtual Console prices, anywhere around 1-3 dollar would be fine And I'll be sure to delete my emulator and only buy from that store. But instead, Switch got this Famicom/NES collection only, and even in the Virtual Console days, not all games were accessible
RIP EmuParadise and CoolROM. EmuParadise doesn't provide ROMs anymore, CoolROM still does but no more Nintendo ROMs. Those two were my favorite sites to download retro ROMs.
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN We'll it does make a game easier when you have infinite saves. It's not really an issue with saves, it's a problem with a lot of these old arcade games that they were made to get as much quarters out of players as possible. It's like a difference between hardcore mode in a game and normal. I remember never finishing the original Prince of Persia as a kid, but it was easy as shit with save states. You could say I finished the game, but never actually beat it.
There’s used game store near me that has really old games for $50 dollars and up. For example I saw Pokémon Diamond for like $60 bucks. That’s ridiculous.
Thats weird example. Gen 4, and the G&S remakes are still worth a lot because the demand is really high. They are arguably the best Pokemon games. Other Pokemon games are not worth nearly as much.
That's really weird. Was it a loose copy or a complete one with box and manual included? I remember i bought a loose copy of pearl for around 16 dollars back in late 2017.
That makes sense. Diamond and Pearl sold more than Platinum, and there's not as much demand for them as there is for Platinum or HGSS, so DP are probably cheaper.

I like playing on the original hardware just cause I love physical copies in general, but emulators make playing retro games soooo much more convenient and accessible. Nobody should have to pay some eBay dude $140 for the opportunity to play Earthbound, or any game.
I love emulation, without it I probably never would have played so many fantranslated games. I just hope people buy the games from companies that deserve it.
Chrono Trigger and Persona 3 wouldn't be some of my favourite games if emulation exists, not gonna pay an arm and a leg just to play games on outdated hardware.
@@OmegaVideoGameGod yeah i agree but the reason i prefer physical is just for the sake of physical so i can keep the box nothing wrong with emulation or digital download

@@tostie3110 still got a functional gba advance sp so no probs there. Got a dreamcast as well that still works with zero issues. I mainly like to emulate games that I readily obtain like old snes games etc.
Emulation usually gets us better frame rate and a much better resolution. Retro elitists will say "that's not how it was meant to be played"... Yeah well I play a game for the sake of playing a game, not for the sake of playing a console for playing a game. Better performance is literally the way the game was originally supposed to function if the hardware of that time was as powerful as now. You can also look at source ports of old PC games and what their original developers play on. You don't see John Romero playing Doom on a floppy disk using MS-DOS and a command to boot the game up... He'll use Windows 10 or IOS and download Doom and play it with GZDoom, Boom, or any other source port engine of Doom

DOOM Boomers/Elitists. They *almost* ruin the DOOM series for me. All their goddamn nitpicks..."DOOMguy is too buff!" "Parkour...in *my* DOOM?! NO!!" "Why doesn't it look like the classic DOOM!?!" "BETHESDA'S TRYING TO KILL DOOM!!!" "ReEeEeEeEeEe!!!". Fuckers. They need to calm the fuck down, and shut the hell up. I hate to sound...controversial, for lack of a better word, but I think that they should be lucky that they're getting any new DOOM games to begin with. After DOOM 3 decisively splitting the fandom back in 2004(I personally love the game myself), there possibly could've been a future where the series just straight up ENDED with the 3rd game. Imagine there was no mention of a DOOM 4. No DOOM(2016). No DOOM Eternal. Not even a re-release of DOOM 64. Sure, we have source ports and the modding community to fall back on, but then there will be a group of fans that want a new DOOM game, from the studio that MADE the game in the first place, regardless if their owned by Bethesda or not. I don't have a nostalgic past with the DOOM series. I never actually played the 1993 classic until I was 17. Despite being dated, both graphically and in some game design aspects, Classic DOOM was such a blast to play and still holds up well to this day. It convinced me to go and play the other games in the series. Had a total *blast* with DOOM(2016) when it initially dropped around the time of my high school graduation, and I whole-heartedly anticipate eventually playing DOOM Eternal. I haven't bought the game yet. I 'd much rather wait until ALL the DLC has been released, get it as a complete package I guess.
@@SRGIProductions The Doom fandom isn't the only single-series fandom with a shit-ton of boomers in it, trust me. I'm a Halo fan AND a Paper Mario fan. Just thinking about the horrors you'll see in those circles is enough to make a grown man cower in fear.
Emulators are awesome, I can finally play GameCube games I haven't played before like Path of Radiance and Animal Crossing without wasting hundreds of dollars on them!
Eduardo Diaz I bought a GameCube because I just like the console and I think it’s cool to have it, but I would’ve used an emulator if my computer doesn’t shit itself trying to run it
I love the discussion of physical vs emulation. I am a video game enthusiast, I do own most of the older system from NES to PS4, and I have to say I see both sides of the argument. Nostalgia is definitely one the main reasons people collect the games they enjoyed when they were younger, but I have noticed in the past few years a lot of people of all ages jumping into it for monetary gain. I am a vendor at game swaps and can spot these people from a mile away....and these same people are generally the loudest objectors when it comes to emulation. Those of us who enjoy retro gaming do go out of our way to play on the original hardware, buying line doublers or modding our systems to play on modern tv's.. but I know the people within my circle of enthusiasts would never shame anyone for emulating....we just want more people to experience the classics. These "eletists" are either pissed the games they bought off ebay or trying to re sell will dip in price due to emulation....or they are losers who need to have a "one up" on the normies. It is in almost any collecting scene that involves nostalgia. Comic book eletists are the exact same, and since the Marvel movies became popular I see so many people that would have never considered buying a floppy off the shelf are now waxing intellectual on comics they had no idea existed before RDJ put on the Iron Man suit. These people will always exist, the best thing to do is ignore it. If other people's opinions effect your enjoyment of anything from games to toys..etc., you probably don't enjoy it as much as you let on. It has honestly become a fasion accesory for people that want to "fit in". I suffered years of shaming from friends and family for enjoying comics and video games before they became respected...but it didn't deter me from my passions. Who cares what someone else thinks? Play however you want to play as long as it still brings you enjoyment!
Same, I also have all the old systems. I only got the games I myself want to play. Emulators are convenient, but specifically for the nes, I have yet to find an emulator that always correctly emulates the colors. So physical systems do have their uses. Also when I have friends over, playing together on an emulator is just meh. But I have no problems with emulation, there are pros and cons for both.
Being a retro gamer myself, I completely 100% support emulation, primarily because it’s a great way to preserve videos for the future because cartridges and discs don’t have life time warranties and they can be victim to age one day when the next century is just around the corner. I collect tons of retro consoles and games, as a personal preference I like to get original hardware and software. Even I hate elitism as much as you do man, *COUGH* PAT the NES Punk *COUGH*
Imagine someone being salty that you buy an original piece of history because you love the real deal (not to mention it is nothing considering there are rare copies out there going for thousands or tenthousands)
Broke:Original Hardware is the only way to play retro games. Woke: There's nothing wrong with emulating retro games. while i prefer OG hardware personally, I see why emulation is valuable. and personally I like emulation.
It's also funny cuz I remember when Nintendo was caught using a Super Mario Bros ROM they found online for the Virtual Console port like come on, emulation is currently the most solid way to preserve video games right now even Nintendo relies on it to a degree
I've never understood this mentality. I've been using emulators since the beginning. Too many UA-camrs have too much invested in keeping the prices high since they're counting on their collections being their retirement fund.
There's a record shop in my town that has a used games section and I got like 20 games for my original Xbox for $10 because I explained to the owner that the Tony Hawk series isn't worth $20 a game
All the electronics store around my area have older(but not really retro games) like modern warfares black ops stuff left and forgotten and you can get them for really fucking cheap like 5 bucks
dude og xbox games are so cheap and I love it. I was able to pick up pro skater 2 for around 4 bucks, but the store never wants to haggle with anyone, also good score
I think physical copies are also important because the same way old hardware can get destroyed so to digital copies can for one reason or another disappear from the internet. Is good to have both and what our friendly Indian guy here seems to be ignoring is that many are making physical ways of preservation as well. Remaking cartridges of old games and using FPGA hardware that operates as a clone hardware to the original hardware while offering HDMI and HD etc. So yeah both physical and digital are progressing in ways to keep those game alive. Even if the original NES consoles started dying we have brand new NES FPGA systems that play the games from the cartridge without emulating, exactly like the original NES. So physical have ways of preserving physically the games as well, not just digitally.
@@SIPEROTH The problem with that is that hdmi to HD is not the same as actually going into the game's exe binary and change the resolution and optimize the game for an HD or 4k experience. Those fgpa nes clones are a nice gimmick, I'll give you that. But unless you're playing on an old crt, it will pretty much look cr@ppy on any modern display. Why? Because the original roms are meant to play on outdated hardware. Were talking about games that were a thing in the 1980s. Much of that magic is already gone, and no fgpa clone can bring that back. Unless you still have a good crt, of course. The only way to preserve any retro game is if the actual developer preserves the actual source code. Working from source code is only true way that you can adapt any game to modern hardware, regardless of the age of the game. You just need competent programmers and the original owner of the game's rights to actually care about releasing a good port.
@Deathtrooper40 I have. But the ones in most decent condition have unfair prices on ebay. I personally recommend that you search local thrift store. They won't charge you an arm and a leg. But it can be a hit or miss. But don't worry, replacement parts for these consoles are very cheap. The repairing for these old consoles is very easy due to their rudimentary technology. Even soldering jobs are way easier on these old consoles than it is on, let's say, a Ps1. That or you can buy the Famicom version of the Nes. It's actually cheaper on ebay than the north American Nes.
@@mitpoker7319 "the actual developers preserve the source code" There's the problem. We need to preserve it digitally and physically because, from my personal experience as a junior developer (also my friends and my professor's) , when something (source code) is unused (in my case if its more than a year. In my professor's case, 5 years), we permanently delete it and more often than not we dont backup it (unless its in public repository. But then again, if its something you sell, it won't be in public repository)
@@vstev3472 That's crazy. But very true. The problem with just preserving these games digitally and physically is that these versions are compiled versions of the game. And I ask myself, how would a dev plan to port these games into newer platforms without the actual source code? Let's take a Ps2 game, for example. Ps2 games run on Mips assembly, right? And you want to port the game to PC. But you lost the source code. Do you just go about and reverse engineer mips code? Or do you just decompile the whole game part by part with "X" decompiler?

I love how this is a 13 minute emulator rant. I was honestly expecting to hear about improper aspect ratios and stuff like that. For having been a part in the Twitch retro / speedrunning community (hereafter referenced as "the community") as a content creator for years now, most people just don't care how you play. They might have a preference for how they like to play but won't rip your asshole off for playing on an emulator. Also surprised you didn't bring up FPGA based systems and flashcarts. These are honestly how a good amount of the community play if they're on hardware (especially the speedrunning community). Higan is probably the best emulator example there is but sad you didn't touch on all the incredible work that has been put into making it what it is today. Tens of thousands of dollars have been spent on Higan. Most of this involving chemically decapping each chip on the system and then looking at it through an electron microscope. I'm a huge advocate of software preservation and have no problem saying I support piracy in this type of application. Loved the vid though! Sorry about the book of text! :D
FPGAs are a great middle ground. They can get expensive because of the nature of FPGA hardware but it's great that it is a reproduction of an older console.
FPGA is especially great if you don't have a CRT handy. I bought a Super NT a few years ago and I love not having to suffer through plugging AV cables into my flatscreen.
I'm 43 and still play my childhood Nintendo and I love emulators. For the "save states" are cheating crowd, well listen up youngins, we had those back then too. We called it pausing the game and turning the tv off. Viola! The game is right where you left it when you get back.
I started a Super Nintendo collection when I was 15, i’m 18 now, and I have a lot of Retro Gaming horror stories. (Which also serve as reasons to why I stopped) Some of which i’d like to share. •Final Fantasy VI (3) I went through the game twice, each time I got about a third of the way through before I got on to play one day, and all my save data was gone. That’s when I learned you can’t bump game cartridges, or else your save data is gone. (You also can’t leave your games stagnant for too long, especially if they’re rpgs, and they run on batteries that die super easy. I can say the same about all the other SNES rpgs i’ve owned and played. •Chrono Trigger •Secret of Mana •Illusion of Gaia •Mario Rpg •Earthbound (So far this one is okay, but I haven’t played it in a bit. Now i’m worried it’s gone. Ugh) It’s fucking aggravating to be worrying about wether your save data is going to die every time you get on to play) •Things that also can make you lose data -Bumping the console -Extreme Temperature Changes -Blowing in the cartridge (Don’t fucking do this with top loading systems, it’s a top loading system. The chips don’t get bent/get dust as easily so there’s no need to do that.) •Touching the chips •The Space/Setup Sometimes you’ll spend more on your setup than actually playing games. It’s ridiculous. Cartridges are also bulky, and take up a lot of space. •The Money you’ll spend This is the most common thing you’ll run into online when researching this. It all depends on what you’re willing to buy/how far you’re going to go. I don’t even wanna talk about how much money i’ve spent, because it’s an amount that i’m ashamed of. *However* There are a lot of joys in the gaming community, and the people you’ll meet while collecting are awesome (mostly) I’ve talked to a lot of people, and they’ve made my experience better in the community than the games. So, take everything you hear about the community with a boulder of salt. It’s not all bad.
Had my entire ps2 memory card full of rpgs just erase itself once. One thing I've been having issues with is keeping hardware working. Had to use electrical tape on my Saturn because the disc sensor broke My Sega cd model 2 is now resting itself and the TurboGrafx controller I had died. This has all been in the last few months. Retro gaming on of hardware is fun but these old consoles don't have long.
Because I got into emulation back in the late 90's, I was able to find out about all the Final Fantasy games I missed out on. I remember playing Final Fantasy V when it was only 80% translated and way before it was finally released on PS1, etc. The real Final Fantasy III for NES was an awesome game too I was able to play on NESticle.
@Gryffin DarkBreed I was gonna say, as long as it has a battery you won't need to worry about never saving again, you might lose the save but at least it ain't super mario 64 where once the flash memory is dead forget about it.
I am a retro game collector and player, and I fully understand where you are coming from. Don't let them shame you for using an emulator. I only collect because I like playing the game the way the devs wanted me to, but I genuinely want people to use an emulator because it will build the community around that game.
I like the experience of playing old games on old consoles (Goldeneye on 64), but I really don't care how anyone goes about playing; just have fun gaming.
I play goldeneye on my uncle's N64 still from time to time. But when I look at the rom version without the limited resolution, I realize how much I've been challenging myself and my eyes to keep playing
At first I thought you were talking about speedrunners, and was thinking "what's wrong with them?", but when I realised you ment the authenticity nazis (Also CRT snobs), I completely understood, they are so annoying lol
But then again, let's not lie here, gaming on a Crt is still pretty great. I dare you to plug something like a ps4 or an xbox one on a CRT, the games look awsome.
@@mitpoker7319 There's less input lag also, just like gaming monitors. My friend plays on a big crappy flat screen TV from 2008 and the lag is horrendous. true but it's supply meets demand. The game it's self only around 150,000-200,000 units. The same goes for panzer dragoon sagas etc. Once the DEMAND dies down, prices will drop.
i love the idea of having old consoles, because i want to have the "retro" game experience, but it's still not completly reliable, shuting down tons off consoles and turning them one from the other is not the same quickness as clicking "change game" and picking your game from a digital library, i will still have various physical consoles but for the most part, i will look to have them on an emulator for ease of use, but...to this day, the n64 emulation scene is still a nightmare, and a similar situation with the og xbox, in those cases i would completly use og hardware and a rom cart, or hacked console, but those are rare situations in between which makes me want to get back to og consoles
Those mini classic consoles are great for this, I've found. You can just download any game onto them and play it like the games that already come with them. That way, you can get pretty much the same feel as the original consoles when playing, and have a super convenient digital library to flip through when you want to switch games.
Ive looked into the retro gaming comunity, and most of them seem to incorperate emulation rather than shame it. They want modern solutions to their retro gaming needs. Also there are only a select few games that go upwards $1000 with games like “Little Samson” or “The Flinstones”. Maybe im looking into the good side and havent found any “Retro Gaming Elitists” channels, but I havent seen any of them complain so far about emulation or list duck hunt for $9000 (Dont worry I know your exageraring). I do agree however with the pricing complaints. To sell high demand, but not rare games for super high prices is ridiculous. Earthbound is super common yet its sold for a very high price because its in demand, and a “cult classic”. I do find the appeal to run stuff on original hardware but alot of the times its ridiculous for the pricing. (Also another thing with emulation, proof that retro game channels dont care about roms>> They have devices that run said roms on original hardware. Look at the SD2SNES, or EVERDRIVE cartridges.) All im saying is I see your points, agree to some degree, but 90% of it is a bit exagerated. I havent seen a channel make claims like that yet, but am interested in seeing one. If anyone can prove me wrong, please link to channels that make claims like that and ill check them out. Thanks for your time :)
I have seen a channel called "Metal Jesus Rocks" and even him, an old guy with a huge collection, built an emulation machine. Although he did that inside an arcade machine with an arcade controller, it still is powered by a PC emulating consoles.
The best argument for retrogaming without emulator currently is speedrunning. Some speedrun categories for some games ban emulators because of the inaccuracies in the game, and also because a game that runs better is much easier to play. As an example, Diddy Kong Racing bans emulators because the original consoles lag actually makes it much much slower than the emulator. But other than that, emulation is great.
That's a minority though, in large number of cases emus are fine as long as its approved ones. Not just that, but speed run timer software is built to play nice with emus like retroarch
retro elitist logic:play goldeneye in a shit resolution, with a shit control scheme and in a barely playable framerate is better than playing in 4k, 60 fps mod, widescreen support and mouse and keyboard
Good video, Muta. I enjoy the shit out of playing on the original hardware and games, but that's more for a collection standpoint. If you want to emulate? I say go for it. Enjoy the games!
I collect retro games because I like to have the physical medium. It’s like curating a library, where I can go pick up a piece of history off of my shelf and play it, and look at the artwork on the box and read the manuals. There’s a lot of nostalgia to this experience. However, I very much care about the historical archiving of video games so I am all for emulating everything possible. The physical medium will deteriorate and we can’t lose these things to time. I have an emulation arcade cab that I made just so I can relive the arcade experience without having to own huge expensive machines and boards. Emulating benefits everyone, and people shouldn’t have to pay crazy prices and have a ton of space to enjoy all the great games throughout history. We’re opening doors to online netplay through emulators on games that were never playable online. We’re able to analyze games to find new speedrunning glitches and create mods to relive them in different ways many years later. Emulation contains the spirit of gaming. The only people I can think who would be against emulating are scummy resellers and boomers.
Man, this was music to my ears. I have been preaching this for years, that you don't need the original hardware to fully experience a game. It made my day to see you're of the same opinion. Most of what I play I emulate. It's easier for me, as I don't have the money to afford a huge collection of hardware and carts/CDs. For me, it's easier and saves space just to store my favorite retro games on my computer. But hey, some elitists are always bragging about how they have all this original stuff and that they have spent thousands of dollars on their massive collections and if you emulate, you're lower than dirt. Fuck that mentality. I'm old enough to have played these games when they were new, and I see NOTHING wrong with reliving those good times through emulation. Another thing I hate? "You're not a real gamer if you emulate." Fuck that mentality, too. Is there a certificate or something that separates "real" gamers from gamers who emulate? No. It's just people wanting to feel superior by lording their original hardware and games over you. I totally agree 100% with you, Mutahar.
Yeah people who happen to spend hundreds of dollars for old ass games also happen to get pissed when you reveal to them that you can play those same games for free on PC or a retropie or a smartphone. Fuck 100% accuracy I'll keep my money.
As someone who usually preferences older games I'm extremely thankful for emulation. Maybe I'd prefer to play them in original form but I just dont have that kinda money, and I like a lot of arcade games and I dont have the money or room for that stuff.
It's the sunk cost fallacy, they have sunk so much money into buying old carts, consoles and CDs that they have to convince themselves that they haven't wasted their money when you can have just as much fun emulating. By adopting the "real retro gamers use real hardware" they justify their spending $800 on a single "rare" NES game.
There are only a few exceptions to this rule, such as Boktai for the GBA, which had a light sensor that required you to play the game in sunlight. This let you charge your in-game weapons.
As someone who managed a brick and mortar used game store for a few years, we did BASE our prices on eBay/ Amazon, but we adjusted (lowered) pricing from there, and based it on average sold listings. I think there's an important role for these types of stores in our culture. That said, emulate away! Even I do.
There was a flea market vendor near me that sold games. He too used Ebay prices but didn't lower the price. He actually didn't even have a price on any of his games at all... When I asked what the price of a game was, he just looked on his laptop and gave me an outrageous price (Probably the highest he saw as I looked up the game when I went home and it was much higher than what I saw on Ebay) so we left and never went back. His shelves were packed probably because nobody buys his games at the highest Ebay prices
I just really love old hardware. Recently fixed my old camera that still records on tapes. But I can totally understand that people would use emulators.
SNES Shin megami Tensi that was banned from USA, was the main reason why I tried SNES emulation. And I love it! It feels like I’m still playing the original
@@randomness4989 he's referring to shin megami tensei, not persona. Tbf it's easily confusable because for a while, the persona series used shin megami tensei in its name.
I've been using emulation ever since i got my first PC in 2007, with my mom buying a CD with Project64 1.4 and s bunch of ROMs. Actually, i remember my older cousin playing Pokémon Gold/Silver on his PC using an emulator on early 2000's. Thanks to emulation i discovered many games and franchises i would never be able otherwise. There are good Retro Gaming channels, like AVGN and Metal Jesus. My stand is against what i call "Shelf Collectors". You know, those youtubers with and colorful rooms full of old games to show off. One that comes to mind is Nintendrew, which might a nice person IRL, but his whole youtube persona comes of a very plastic, and that's the vibe i get from these kind of Retro Gaming enthusiasts: collecting for the sake of collecting, bumping the prices, taking care and showing off but never playing them. They say Retro Gaming is "an investment", they count on one day selling everything and getting lost of cash. Other sub set of collectors i hate are the buyers of prototype hardware/games. While some are nice enough to dump the ROMs for preservation or releasing info about the hardware, other intentionally hold a tight grip of they games and never show it. You want it? Pay thousands of dollars to get it! Some even go as far as buying all of the prototype carts/hardware available, destroying them and keeping one working copy, to artificially bump the price. Others are too dumb and unintentionally destroy what they have - i'm still salt about the loss of the Conker 64 beta. Other channel that is not againist emulation, but come as off as a bit of elitist is My Life in Gaming. But they content is very high quality and they provide many useful information, specially about cables.
not to mention that they expect you to be as smart as them in terms of coding games or emulating, I'm 14 and last year i bought a gaming console and i asked the retro gaming community about how to upgrade it, and wether i could port n64 games on it, they expected me to be a proffesional or somethin' like them, I wasn't born IN THE 90s AND I DONT KNOW HOW TO CODE OR WHATEVER SHIT!
Bruh I was born in the 90s, we didn't have to code to get stuff working either emulators just took a lot more setup haha What console do you have? If it's any of the last two xbox generations you can pay to have dev mode unlocked and that lets you download emulators, worth having a looking on youtube but you'll also find written guides online. If it's a PS3 or PS4 it's not too hard but with the PS3 you have to follow the guides to a T and read ahead so you don't brick the console. PS4 there's no danger of that happening as far as I know. PS5 doesn't have a big jailbreaking scene yet unfortunately but there's already some work being done. Nintendo Switch can also be jailbroken to run emulators but I've never looked into it just know it's possible without bricking the system. Best tip I can give is find the most up to date guide you can and just read through it and watch video guides to give you an idea of what to expect too. If you're looking for Roms reddit is your friend but you can also check out Vimm's lair for older titles.
This reminds me, I should play some PSP today. I love the PPSSPP emulator for Android. It's cool casting my games to a monitor and using my Xbox One controller to take a trip down memory lane.
You actually are tbh the smartest person I have ever seen other than like the hawking guy. And other geniuses ...your on your way buddy I appreciate your videos extremely.
"Someday, every PS3 is going to die"... yeah, but you forget that older hardware rarely ever failed even during it's life-span. Most modern electronics are built more to have a short-life span, while older hardware was built to last. For one, the designs were simpler, which makes them more bulletproof. They are also easier to work on. The most common thing to fail is capacitors and those can be fix on many old machines. But that being said, the older the machine, the better the emulation tends to be on it. I have absolutely no problem with emulation. Original hardware seems to be more of an issue with speed runners, since emulation isn't allowed with speed runners. Only original hardware and original copies of the games. Maybe the sales people might have something to do with this, but I think it's more fueled by the speed running community. I guess because original hardware is the only way to keep things fair, so, I guess that sort of makes sense. I really don't care for speed running, so, I use emulators where appropriate. I only seek original hardware when games I want to play dont run right. I mostly care about the N64 because that's a system I have a close connection with, but I'm perfectly fine emulating gamecube games on my Wii U using Nintendont (even though Nintendont is more like patching the game to run in Wii mode than actually emulating.)
I love playing my games on their original hardaware just feels right for me but god damn i hate with a passion those retro elitists,man-children telling you how to play your games
Your PS3 analogy hit me hard man. I lost a ton of save data and access to exclusives when my 2nd model PS3 phat YLODed on me. No way I'm paying over $200 for a console again, regardless of how many fantastic experiences it gives me. If I can't diagnose the problem myself and rewire or buy the mass produced parts I need to fix it individually, no way man. I totally get the whole "PC master race" thing, especially now that I have my own real gaming rig.
Great video and comments bro! As a retro gamer I have an arcade table with built in emulators for a variety of consoles. And just to be able to plug in and stream these is a blessing. Emulators mean retro will be around for as long as people are just embrace it!
I still have my old crt, nes and snes games that include just about every game worth playing on those systems, however I wish sony, Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft would hire a team of the guys responsible for these emulators to preserve their whole catalogue of games in original form. I don’t really know how to mess with emulators but would love to able to play all games on modern systems. The big three should also pay up the licensing fees necessary for the best games like simpsons, xmen and avengers, and turtles arcade. I also believe that the big 3 could easily profit from offering a mini classic modern console with an online store offering all the classics and a platform for smaller developers to make modern retro style games. The market is waiting and so far all we’ve gotten are cheap emulator consoles with a limited amount of games.
@Deon Denis I already know that and that's unfortunate. They're leaving a lot of money on the table. There's no reason for anything before Wii U to be locked to them. They could even create a community around it by supporting mods and fan games.
@Deon Denis I love Nintendo, but their corporate side is complete bullshit. As a studio, however, they're amazing, usually. The Switch is almost 3 years old and they haven't provided a PERMANENT fix to drift...
The market is smaller than people make it out to be. Maybe a few people will play those old titles, but not for long. Everyone knows the story/etc, most people played them before, the grafics are shit, the controls are not very good... There are a lot of people who watch those games for speed runs and stuff, because of the nostalgia, but the group who play those games themselves is fairly small. Just look at what Blizzard said about wow classic. You think you want it, but you don't. They gave the people wow classic and now it is already pretty much dead.
If it wasn't for Dosbox I could have never again have a nostalgia trip with Commander Keen and Blake Stone which were my childhood classics. God bless emulators.

Most of the retro games will be preserved on the internet making worthless getting the actual physical and absurdley priced game cartridge.
@@SIPEROTH
The problem with that is that hdmi to HD is not the same as actually going into the game's exe binary and change the resolution and optimize the game for an HD or 4k experience.
@Deathtrooper40
I have.
@@mitpoker7319 "the actual developers preserve the source code"
There's the problem.
@@vstev3472
That's crazy.

I started a Super Nintendo collection when I was 15, i’m 18 now, and I have a lot of Retro Gaming horror stories. (Which also serve as reasons to why I stopped) Some of which i’d like to share.
•Final Fantasy VI (3)
I went through the game twice, each time I got about a third of the way through before I got on to play one day, and all my save data was gone.
That’s when I learned you can’t bump game cartridges, or else your save data is gone.
(You also can’t leave your games stagnant for too long, especially if they’re rpgs, and they run on batteries that die super easy.
I can say the same about all the other SNES rpgs i’ve owned and played.
•Chrono Trigger
•Secret of Mana
•Illusion of Gaia
•Mario Rpg
•Earthbound (So far this one is okay, but I haven’t played it in a bit. Now i’m worried it’s gone. Ugh)
It’s fucking aggravating to be worrying about wether your save data is going to die every time you get on to play)
•Things that also can make you lose data
-Bumping the console
-Extreme Temperature Changes
-Blowing in the cartridge
(Don’t fucking do this with top loading systems, it’s a top loading system. The chips don’t get bent/get dust as easily so there’s no need to do that.)
•Touching the chips
•The Space/Setup
Sometimes you’ll spend more on your setup than actually playing games. It’s ridiculous. Cartridges are also bulky, and take up a lot of space.
•The Money you’ll spend
This is the most common thing you’ll run into online when researching this. It all depends on what you’re willing to buy/how far you’re going to go.
I don’t even wanna talk about how much money i’ve spent, because it’s an amount that i’m ashamed of.
*However*
There are a lot of joys in the gaming community, and the people you’ll meet while collecting are awesome (mostly)
I’ve talked to a lot of people, and they’ve made my experience better in the community than the games.
So, take everything you hear about the community with a boulder of salt. It’s not all bad.

i love the idea of having old consoles, because i want to have the "retro" game experience, but it's still not completly reliable, shuting down tons off consoles and turning them one from the other is not the same quickness as clicking "change game" and picking your game from a digital library, i will still have various physical consoles but for the most part, i will look to have them on an emulator for ease of use, but...to this day, the n64 emulation scene is still a nightmare, and a similar situation with the og xbox, in those cases i would completly use og hardware and a rom cart, or hacked console, but those are rare situations in between which makes me want to get back to og consoles
Those mini classic consoles are great for this, I've found. You can just download any game onto them and play it like the games that already come with them. That way, you can get pretty much the same feel as the original consoles when playing, and have a super convenient digital library to flip through when you want to switch games.
I just want to play GameCube games and not sell my soul to the devil to play them
Then, an emulator is a great solution for that.
Look at the SD2SNES, or EVERDRIVE cartridges.)
All im saying is I see your points, agree to some degree, but 90% of it is a bit exagerated. I havent seen a channel make claims like that yet, but am interested in seeing one. If anyone can prove me wrong, please link to channels that make claims like that and ill check them out.

LuTech Ive seen that channel also, and im subscribed! Hes a pretty genuine guy, and has promoted emulation a ton.
Well, I'm sure emulators like higan that aim for accuracy are speed-running legal.

Elitism is a powerful drug.
Even I do.
"I think there's an important role for these types of stores in our culture."
... Why ?
There was a flea market vendor near me that sold games. He too used Ebay prices but didn't lower the price. He actually didn't even have a price on any of his games at all... When I asked what the price of a game was, he just looked on his laptop and gave me an outrageous price (Probably the highest he saw as I looked up the game when I went home and it was much higher than what I saw on Ebay) so we left and never went back.
Bruh I was born in the 90s, we didn't have to code to get stuff working either emulators just took a lot more setup haha
What console do you have?
Damn noice!
There's a good several games... That I hold high sentimental value for. And I specifically keep them on an emulator so they will never break...
You actually are tbh the smartest person I have ever seen other than like the hawking guy. And other geniuses ...your on your way buddy I appreciate your videos extremely.
Retrohype: _I can't let go of my childhood and I want everyone to know it_
"Someday, every PS3 is going to die"... yeah, but you forget that older hardware rarely ever failed even during it's life-span.
I know this is late, but emulators are both allowed and used in speed running. There's simply separate categories for emu and console running.
I love playing my games on their original hardaware just feels right for me but god damn i hate with a passion those retro elitists,man-children telling you how to play your games
LGR is probably the most chill/non-elitist retro game channel, even though his more recent videos tend to be retro computers/hardware :)
LGR is the GOAT

Retro game collecting is turning into a shelf decoration contest.

Having the OG Console and Disc or Cartridge is nice to have for the Feeling. But Emulation or Backwards Compatible is really good thing to have
Great video and comments bro!
I wish Nintendo would bring the Virtual Console to PC and the other consoles. Nobody's buying a Switch for the stupid $20 yearly license.
@@ijustownyouall Some SNES games abed very well, and SMB3 and Kirby's Adventure on the NES are still actually fun to play for more than 10 minutes.
If it wasn't for Dosbox I could have never again have a nostalgia trip with Commander Keen and Blake Stone which were my childhood classics.
God bless emulators.
